Jeremy White spends some time discussing the idea of a trade for the Buffalo Bills as they look to improve their defenses, and he brings up a few ideas. He starts by analyzing the possibility of the Bills moving on from WR Joshua Palmer to make more room in their cap. Then he analyzes the possible targets the Bills may look at, position and team wise. Jeremy mentions names like Derwin James, Zach Baun, and more!

00:00It's a football Friday with a bye week. What will you do with all your free time?
00:05The games to watch. Last night's game was a good one. Maybe the best one of the weekend in terms
00:09of
00:12outcomes for the Bills and what you'd want because the Patriots lost and the Bills will play the
00:17Bears if they beat the Bears. That's a chance to gain a game on them. There's a lot made about,
00:21of course, the division and your head-to-heads, which makes sense, but it's quite regular or normal
00:30that two teams in the same division, you could lose to a team twice and you just beat other teams
00:35and
00:36you don't even go to a tiebreaker. You're going to beat them. It's one of the strange things about
00:39the NFL where the number one spot for winning the division is not division record. It's just record.
00:47Patriots lost to the Bears. If the Bills beat the Bears, that's a win for the Bills.
00:518-0-3-0-5-50, the phone number. Anyway, we had some Sabre stuff early, some Bills stuff here
00:57as well.
00:58At the bye week for the Bills, Joe off today, Jeremy White, Joe Kelly, Owen Parker. I almost made
01:04Joe Parker here. But anyway, these guys are here. On the Bills in the bye week, how much should we
01:13be
01:14thinking about a trade? The Josh Palmer trade idea, maybe this was created by Chris Trapasso,
01:18Buddy Chris Trapasso, who obviously would make a good point to bring this up, that you could trade
01:23him out. And if you do that, you're doing it to save cap space. If the Bills were to trade
01:27Josh Palmer,
01:28they could save $6 million in cap space for a guy that has a couple touchdowns, has had a couple
01:35opportunities, but not a lot. We know the Josh Palmer story here. And if they were to lose him to
01:41a
01:41trade to create space, it would only make sense if they were going to do it in the interest of
01:48getting
01:48someone else. I would think yes at receiver or linebacker, safety, whatever. I think that by the
01:57time we get to the trade deadline, which is in a couple of weeks, the Bills will make some sort
02:02of move
02:03for a starting caliber player. What teams are selling off that maybe it's a surprise to see
02:10them selling? The Eagles are one, right? Linebacker Zach Bond could be a name for this.
02:15The safeties, we've run through them before. Buda Baker in Arizona, we talked about him last year.
02:20Derwin James in LA. There are other linebacker ideas. Jesse Bates, another safety out of Atlanta.
02:27And maybe the next two to three weeks, you got games this week. You got the Baltimore week when the
02:31Bills play the Ravens and then Monday Night Football, Bills Vikings. So three weeks still
02:36for teams to find out if they're in it or not, right? Are they, are you in the race for
02:41the
02:41playoffs? Are you going to probably miss? You can identify you're probably going to miss
02:44and make some changes. And it's worth pointing out that right now in the AFC, a four and two team
02:53would miss the playoffs. So if you're a team that's just hanging around in the AFC, it's maybe
03:00harder than ever to get back into it. So teams that could sell, here's Houston at two and four,
03:05a four and two team would miss the playoffs right now in the, or before New England lost last night.
03:10So there's, um, there's a lot of competition for those top spots. And there, there are,
03:15if there are 14 playoff spots, there really might be 13 good teams sneaking in and getting in.
03:22Maybe the divisions get that. Maybe the NFC East gets that. You want to toss the NFC South in there
03:28too. I guess you could, the Browns being foreign to is a surprising. Are they going to make it?
03:33They think they can, they can get in Pittsburgh's foreign to think they can get in in the next two
03:38to three weeks. We might see some teams have a better idea of who they are and who's selling,
03:43but for trade candidates for the bills, back to the Palmer idea. I, I just have so much trouble
03:49thinking about them changing their receiver room in a substantive way because the offense is good
03:57and Allen is doing well. The line is good to great. The run game is good. They have DJ Moore
04:03as the top dog. They were able to get through two weeks of sitting him out as much as he
04:09might not
04:09have liked that. He sat for two weeks and they won two games and now he can come back against
04:14Baltimore
04:14and go for the stretch run. If however, he were to re-aggravate or get injured before the deadline,
04:21I think you'd have to have to dip into that market, but to seek it out otherwise, where you
04:26would move a Palmer, you'd be paying someone to take him paying a team. Here's a fourth round pick
04:34for Palmer and a seventh round pick or something like that. You would move up. You're basically spending
04:40money to, to buy a draft pick if you're that team and you're taking Josh Palmer as part of the
04:45deal.
04:45But for Palmer, I kind of feel the same way that I did about Keon Coleman last year, which is
04:52unless you actually have a different idea, just a dump for the sake of a dump, because you haven't
04:58been happy with the production, it doesn't make a lot of sense. It's a super expensive position.
05:03If you want to upgrade from him, it's doable. It just seems like a lot of, a lot of work
05:09that I
05:09just, I don't think the bills would do. So could they save 6 million? Yeah, right. It could, but
05:15you're paying a team to do it. And then on top of that, paying more. So hypothetically, you've
05:21identified this receiver, unless it's a guy off the street or if it's Tyrell Shavers, or if it's,
05:27you know, somebody else like that, and you're using that six on a linebacker or a safety,
05:31you are, you're probably weakening your group, even though Palmer has, you know, been disappointing
05:37for the most part. But I, I, I see that, that suggestion. I don't know that it's a full
05:43on trade rumor. I haven't seen an insider connect a team to having interest. And I, again, if
05:48you're a team that has interest, you're probably a bad team that is short on draft capital trying
05:53to move up. So anyway, 803-0550 to join us here on WGR on the bills.
06:01on the bye week, they go to the bye week, looking for answers defensively to see if
06:06they can find their way to, I guess, something more sustainable. They stopped the run. They
06:15don't stop the pass, but everybody we talked to, we talked to Carl Jones yesterday, our weekly
06:20visits with Joe Marino, everybody we talked to is just on the idea that it doesn't have
06:27to be this bad. They've got communication issues. And when they're rolling back in
06:32their zones, they are just missing things. So an extended week here where you have a bye
06:38week, time on task, all that. To me, it seems entirely reasonable that they could get back
06:46to like a baseline of slightly below average. And if you have a defense that just has a little
06:53bit of a nasty edge to it from a havoc standpoint, where they can get the quarterback occasionally,
06:58they can force bad throws occasionally, but are by yards and EPA, just a middle of the
07:05road defense. Like that'll work. That'll often work. And I think the bills can get there.
07:10I think they can maybe one player added to the defense, maybe a linebacker added to the defense,
07:15maybe a safety in place of CJ Gardner Johnson and time on task. Those two things get you to average
07:22and try to win the Superbowl at the bye week. How different do you feel about them? I am about
07:31the
07:31same. And it's in large part because the defense, I mean, it really would have had a difficult time
07:39convincing me of anything concrete anytime before Thanksgiving. Five, six games here or there.
07:47They've played a tough slate of offenses. No doubt about that. Really good offenses for the most part.
07:53So, you know, if they beat up on the jets and they beat up on the dolphins and it starts
07:56to look
07:57better, that'll, that'll sound right to me. But right now the team is about what I thought it would be.
08:04Not exactly how I thought it would be. The offense is probably a little better than I thought it
08:08would be. And the defense is probably a lot worse than I thought it would be, but you know, five
08:13and one doing the job and room for improvement. But Joe Brady and Jim Leonard sorting this out and
08:20figuring out what to do on that side of the ball. It's a, it's going to take time and it
08:25might take
08:26a little more help from the roster. 803-0550 is just the way to get in touch with us. We'll
08:34talk
08:34with Sal Capaccio at 730. I've got bi-week awards to get to. We've also got to talk about what
08:39the
08:39Knicks did because their owner is notorious for being different, odd, difficult, out of touch. And
08:48what he did with his organization in the last couple of days is pretty wild. A wild story to tell
08:53you
08:53about a spam phishing email and championship rings. So we'll get to that. 803-0550 on WGR.
