00:00Bills win, hold off the Chargers despite five turnovers.
00:04They move to 3-0.
00:05We're talking about it with you here on a Buffalo Football Monday.
00:08Buffalo Football Monday brought to you by Tim Hortons,
00:10the official coffee of the Jeremy and Joe Morning Show on WGR.
00:13Start your day strong with Tim Hortons and the Bills.
00:16And on Mondays at 7 o'clock, we alternate back and forth
00:18between D.J. Moore and Conor McGovern.
00:20And this week it is Bills wide receiver D.J. Moore
00:22who joins us on the Western Hotline.
00:24D.J., good morning and congratulations on the win.
00:27Good morning. Thank you very much.
00:29How are you feeling?
00:33I feel good, but sore and good at the same time, should I say.
00:37All right.
00:37But you're able to play through something.
00:39And I wonder, like, in your career, you know,
00:41if you go look at how many games you've missed over the course of your career,
00:44it's a very low number.
00:45So is that something you pride yourself on, availability and ability to kind of go
00:50no matter what to the best of your ability?
00:54Yeah.
00:56Never want to not be out there with the guys.
00:59We're putting our best foot forward.
01:00So I take pride in doing treatments right and doing everything on my end
01:06to have me out there on Sunday.
01:10Yeah.
01:10I feel like it looked that way.
01:11Like, we were wondering, like, okay, how much will he play?
01:14You know, how – what state will he be in?
01:16And there were a couple plays DJ looked like early on where, like, oh,
01:19he's trying to break tackles and creating more yards.
01:21So, you know, it must be going okay at least.
01:24Yeah, it was going good.
01:27Some of the neck tackles was a little crazy, but we good.
01:30Did you feel like – you say neck tackles.
01:32Like, were they targeting that or anything like that?
01:35Just, you know, just the way that it goes sometimes?
01:38No, just the way that it goes sometimes.
01:41Just the way that I move and control my body is I put people in them type of situations.
01:48Fair enough.
01:48So a game where you get the ball thrown to you a bunch, you know,
01:52anyone wondering if you were going to be at 100% or able to contribute on some level,
01:56it seems that as the offense went and continued to move,
02:00that Josh was still looking for you quite a bit.
02:02But, yeah, I mean, the connection is there with everybody else as well.
02:10We just got to make the plays when they're going to us.
02:13Some of those routes, DJ, especially I was noticing these late in the game
02:17where you're kind of working back to the football
02:19or Josh has the ball out before you've even turned.
02:23How long would you say you've kind of been on the same page with Josh
02:27on some of those timing routes or just there's got to be a confidence there in you
02:31that I'm throwing this ball because I know where he's going to be
02:34and I know when he's going to turn?
02:36Yeah, it's more of the confidence level of the repetitions that we have.
02:41So a few instances where that happened, yes, he has great confidence in all of us,
02:50not just me, to know where the ball is going to be and where we're going to be,
02:54well, where he's placing the ball, and we have to be in a certain spot.
02:58So that's a lot of confidence in us.
02:59What's your guys' attitude as an offense as that game is unfolding
03:03and it's three turnovers on the first four drives of the game?
03:07Is it avoiding just being frustrated that it's happening?
03:12I don't know.
03:12What's your attitude generally when you have a game like that
03:15going the way it's going early on?
03:18I try to be unfazed by it because it's a long game.
03:23So we just knew that we just had to keep chipping away
03:26and taking it one play at a time to get where we wanted to be
03:30and that's a win at the end.
03:32Joe Brady said that he thought it was perfect,
03:35that one of the things he said at halftime was this is perfect,
03:37maybe some adversity and responding in the right way.
03:40He thought it was a good thing for the team.
03:43As that game's going, as Joe just said,
03:45it probably doesn't feel like a good thing in the first half,
03:47but is there a mental reset at halftime?
03:50I mean, people talk about halftime adjustments,
03:51but maybe more than anything it kind of feels like a new game at 10-10.
03:55Yeah, it felt like a new game going into halftime
03:58because we knew if we just stopped having the turnovers
04:02and just stayed together, we would be good.
04:05I wonder too, just that last drive of the first half,
04:09how important that would have been for you guys to go into the half at all,
04:12the couple of turnovers that there were,
04:14to be tied going into halftime like that.
04:17And you guys moved down the field, like two-minute drill.
04:21How big that drive would have been for you guys going into half number two?
04:25It would have been big because it just put us up even more going into half.
04:29And, I mean, at the end of the day,
04:33we got to score more points than they did, and we did that.
04:38DJ Moore joining us in the Western Hotline.
04:40DJ, there's a big play on third and 10.
04:42As you guys are, you're already in the lead,
04:43but looking to kind of extend the lead and put the game away.
04:45And the throw goes to you on a third and 10, big conversion there.
04:49Is that, as that play unfolds, something that develops,
04:52or are you looking for the ball on that play?
04:54Because I feel like one of the reasons you probably were brought here
04:57was there's a big high-leverage moment,
05:00and Josh is going to look to someone for that moment.
05:02And on that play, they look to you.
05:04Was that a call for you right away?
05:08Which one?
05:09The third and 10.
05:10Third and 10, fourth quarter.
05:11You guys are up three.
05:12You make one coming across the formation to keep things moving.
05:17Yeah.
05:18I mean, yeah.
05:19I just got to run across the field as fast as I can
05:22and get open and be smart about getting open
05:26and going through all that traffic.
05:27So, yeah.
05:28How about, again, there's another play in this game that's a big one.
05:31I'll talk to you about Keon Coleman, which you've seen from him,
05:33whether it's development or maturity.
05:35He makes a big play to get the team down to the one-yard line.
05:37I mean, he's been someone, of course, in his career has shown some good things on tape
05:43and shown some good things to fans here.
05:44What have you seen from Coleman here in his third year?
05:48I'm just being consistent throughout the week.
05:51His game plan has been good, and the questions that he asks are perfect.
05:56And then he goes out there and makes plays when his number gets called.
05:59So, I'm impressed with Keon, and I hope he's on the ups.
06:03How much confidence was the defense giving you guys yesterday?
06:06As all that's going, you know, even when the turnovers were happening,
06:10them being able to limit the Chargers to mostly field goals,
06:13if not even sometimes it was punts.
06:16Yeah, they was playing lights out.
06:17We had them in some crazy situations, but they bounced out
06:22and just only gave up 10 points.
06:24And, I mean, you can't ask them to do nothing better than that.
06:29DJ Moore with us on the Western Hotline.
06:31And looking ahead to next week a little bit, DJ,
06:34I wonder what the messaging will be like from you guys.
06:37Because for us, I know what it's going to feel like,
06:39New England being what they are record-wise,
06:41that it's so early in the season,
06:43but the division looks like it's already going really, really well for you guys.
06:49So, I know we're still within the 24 hours, right,
06:52Victory Monday phase here.
06:54But your thoughts on, like, a first big divisional matchup at the new stadium?
07:01Yeah, we're looking forward to it.
07:02Like always, it's the next game on the schedule,
07:05so we've got to be locked in.
07:06And we can't play how we played starting this first game.
07:10Well, not the first game, just last game.
07:12Yeah, yeah.
07:14Yeah, Joe Brady talked about smoke alarms going off
07:16and maybe some signs that things were, I don't know, about to go off.
07:21And this game certainly won with mistakes along the way,
07:24but you guys survived.
07:25Have you ever been a part of a game with five turnovers
07:26where the team had won the game?
07:29I don't believe so.
07:30That was crazy.
07:32I don't think we need to do that again.
07:35Yeah, doesn't happen much.
07:36DJ Moore on the Western Hotline.
07:38We talk to him on Mondays here on Buffalo Football Mondays
07:41and a Victory Monday.
07:41DJ, heal up as best you can.
07:44Hopefully, you know, what you're dealing with gets better and better each week.
07:46And we'll see you out there against the Patriots on Sunday.
07:50DJ Moore, Bill's wide receiver.
07:52That 3rd and 10 play I mentioned to him, to me, that's the play they need in the playoffs.
07:58That's the play they need when it's, instead of up by three with the ball,
08:01it's 3rd and 10, you're down by four with four minutes left,
08:05and who's Josh going to go to?
08:06It's that play.
08:08Yeah.
08:08He targeted him 10 times in this game.
08:11This is, is this the play where he comes in motion across the formation?
08:16Or is this when the one he's working?
08:18There were a couple of big ones.
08:19He's working right to left.
08:20Right to left.
08:20There's a couple of big ones.
08:21Yeah, okay.
08:21This is the one I thought it was, too.
08:23Right to left on the screen.
08:24Yeah, he comes in motion in the play.
08:26Like, you could tell, I think, immediately, like, that play was designed to, like,
08:29we were going to get him freed up a little bit.
08:31This ball is going to him.
08:32Yeah.
08:33And they convert it.
08:33And then they score, what, it was on the next play?
08:37I can check.
08:37I think the next one is the Cook play.
08:40Yes, James Cook up the middle for three yards.
08:42Where the linebacker was untouched coming through,
08:45and I thought he was going to hit Josh before he handed the ball off.
08:49And he didn't.
08:50He, like, hesitated.
08:52Cook gets the ball, sidestepped him, and went into the end zone.
08:55How that linebacker does not stop that play.
08:57I mean, it's more impressive by Cook.
08:59Because he's got a free linebacker right there in the backfield
09:02the second he touches the football and he's able to get around him.
09:068-0-3-0-5-50.
09:08Big play from Coleman.
09:10Big play from Moore.
09:11You know, is this offense...
09:12No, there was nothing else receiver-wise.
09:15Not really.
09:16It was one...
09:16In fact, was it Moore's six catches,
09:19and then the rest of the wide receiver group had two.
09:23Coleman and Shakir had one each.
09:25And that was it.
09:27Nothing for Palmer in this game.
09:29Not even a target.
09:31Ty Johnson, right?
09:32It was Ty Johnson.
09:33He was the second guy.
09:36Including the one where Allen is on fourth down
09:38and he's about to get sacked
09:39and he just kind of throws the ball over towards where Johnson is.
09:42Yeah.
09:43Yeah.
09:43That's going to happen, though, in this offense.
09:45Like, Shakir, so far through three games,
09:48has really not been a part of this offense in a very big way.
09:51He's a secondary...
09:53He's a secondary receiver in the offense.
09:56Yeah.
09:56Which is maybe the right role for him, right?
09:59Like, through three games, you know, he's averaging, like, 30 yards a game.
10:04That's about, I think...
10:06Given what he's paid, that's kind of right for what he is.
10:11I mean, maybe you would have hoped him to get to 100 yards total.
10:15But, yeah, like, he's just, to me, like...
10:19He is the yak guy and he's the guy you throw the ball to at the line of scrimmage
10:24and I'm kind of happy the Bills aren't really running those plays a lot anymore.
10:27So, one consequence of that is that Shakir is going to get the ball less.
10:32Because a lot of times when he got the ball,
10:35I'm designing a play to get him the ball.
10:37I'm designing a screen, a tunnel screen, an end around.
10:42I'm manufacturing a touch for him.
10:44And this offense no longer needs to manufacture touches to their yak guys.
10:48They can just run the offense and have guys go run routes.
10:50And when you're doing that, you're going to throw the ball to Kincaid and Moore
10:53a lot more often than you're going to throw the ball to him.
10:56803-0550.
10:57Get some calls in here.
10:58One other note.
10:59We kind of got to this on pregame.
11:01Again, we've kind of gone from the everybody eats mindset to sometimes it's spread around,
11:07but mostly it's going to be Moore, Kincaid, and Coleman, really.
11:12Palmer was not a factor in this game.
11:13No.
