00:01When Tasmanians are injured or ill, care from the state's ambulance service can be the difference between life or death.
00:09But Ambulance Tasmania is struggling to meet national benchmarks.
00:13The National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards are designed to ensure health services provide high-quality care.
00:20Ambulance services don't have to show they meet these standards, but they might in the future.
00:25Last year, Ambulance Tasmania paid an accreditor to carry out a mock assessment.
00:30They found of the 138 relevant actions that make up the standards, Ambulance Tasmania fully met only 23, or 17%.
00:40It met 66 with recommendations and did not meet 49.
00:45The Ambulance Service isn't meeting clear standards that are national benchmarks, and they're not only just missing, they're missing by
00:53a mile.
00:53And that's what's really alarming.
00:56This report makes it clear that Ambulance Tasmania could not be accredited.
00:59Some of the report's findings were that incidents were going unreported, most policies and procedures were out of date, and
01:07risks were not being effectively or transparently managed.
01:11The ABC had to use right-to-information laws to get the accreditor's report.
01:16It was finished last June, but the Health Department refused to make it public.
01:20The Department says Ambulance Tasmania is making improvements to address the issues outlined in the report.
