00:01Just to remind everybody, you went from a 6% primary vote for One Nation at the last
00:06federal election, 12 months later in that by-election, 40% primary vote.
00:10So it was an extraordinary turnaround and you're seeing people change political habits
00:14of a lifetime.
00:15We spoke to people on the ground there who voted for One Nation for a number of reasons.
00:19They were disillusioned with the main parties, they felt like people had been forgotten in
00:24the bush.
00:25A lot of them pointed out to the credibility of David Farley as a candidate.
00:28He was somebody who understood water policy deeply.
00:31He'd been the CEO of an agriculture company.
00:33And they were saying very much that they didn't have an alternative before, that then they
00:37had an alternative.
00:38So we're going to hear from a couple of Farrah voters here starting with David Nichols who's
00:42run a container business in Albury for over two decades.
00:45What is it about Pauline Hanson you like?
00:48She's a fighter.
00:50She's stuck to her guns for all those years.
00:53They've done everything.
00:54They've jailed her.
00:55They've tried everything.
00:57She's still there and fighting.
00:59The people in Hay have just had a gutful of the way the country's been running at the
01:02moment.
01:02And so they saw One Nation as the solution?
01:05Just a change.
01:06Anything.
01:06No matter what it is, it's just a change.
01:08And One Nation's there and they're saying what the average person is thinking all the
01:13time.
01:13That is Lionel Garner.
01:15He's a shearing contractor in Hay, and he actually handed out how to vote cards for the
01:19Liberals at the last election and is then voting One Nation this time round.
01:23And it was something that we kept hearing that people had been lifelong Liberal or national
01:26voters.
01:27This is a seat where we had Tim Fisher, the former Nationals leader in for a long time, Susan
01:32Lee, the former Liberals leader in as well for a very long time.
01:35And then suddenly it's swung and it's One Nation territory now.
01:37You've also uncovered allegations, Steve, that Australia's richest person tried to help
01:42a Liberal MP to One Nation.
01:44What can you tell us about that?
01:45Yeah, we know that Gina Reinhart has been helping and backing the party in many ways.
01:49She's been praising Pauline Hanson publicly, providing advice to Pauline Hanson, helping
01:55with fundraisers and also donating that plane that was worth one and a half million dollars.
02:00We've been told that she helped try and recruit Henry Pike, the Liberal member for
02:05Bowman to One Nation.
02:07He had lunch at her holiday house on the Sunshine Coast.
02:12Apparently he was asked whether he was thinking of joining One Nation and whether he would consider
02:16it.
02:17And Henry Pike saw that as Gina Reinhart actively trying to recruit him to One Nation.
02:24We put questions to Gina Reinhart's media spokesperson about that.
02:28They did not respond to that.
02:29Henry Pike did not appear on camera, but released a statement to us and said, I have enormous respect
02:34for Mrs Reinhart and all she has achieved.
02:37He said, but I am and always will be a Liberal.
02:40And he went on to say Australia's future is too important for political opportunism.
02:45Your story also looks at how the party is run.
02:48What did you find out about that?
02:49Yeah, it's very centrally controlled.
02:51And we spoke to people who were inside the party, including Jennifer Game, who was a policy
02:56adviser for eight years for Pauline Hanson.
02:58She was the Senate candidate for South Australia at the last election and led the party in South
03:03Australia for a number of years.
03:04She said it's not really run like a traditional political party.
03:08She described it as being more like a small business.
03:11She said the party lacks democracy and that members don't have much input as far as candidates
03:17and also policy goes.
03:18I should point out though that David Farley was preselected by members of the party.
03:23And also something that was criticised by former members of the party was the lack of democracy
03:31in the set-up, that Pauline Hanson in the Constitution is effectively the president for life and
03:36she gets to choose her successor.
03:38So that was something that was criticised by the former Queensland President Jim Savage,
03:43who even though he will vote for Pauline Hanson at the next election, was highly critical of
03:47that particular set-up.
03:48He said you shouldn't be president for life of a political party or the Boy Scouts in Australia.
03:53He said this is a democracy.
03:54He said this is a democracy.
