00:01The family of 30-year-old Melbourne man, Jordan Nyab, have flown out of Melbourne Airport where I am now
00:08and will be landing in Peru today to join search efforts for their missing son.
00:13Jordan is believed to be missing in the remote Waiwash region in the Andes Mountains in central Peru.
00:20His father, Vin Dao, said he contacted Jordan two weeks ago before he undertook a 10-day solo hike.
00:28Jordan was scheduled to finish his trek last Wednesday and board a flight on Thursday.
00:33Jordan did not check into his hotel and he did not board that flight.
00:37His family raised the alarm with local authorities in Peru as well as the Department of Foreign Affairs here in
00:43Australia.
00:44DFAT says they're providing consular assistance to the family.
00:48Meanwhile, the family have engaged a private high-altitude mountain rescue team over in Peru
00:55and they've been searching the mountainous region for Jordan since the early hours of Saturday morning Australian time.
01:01Now, his family are set to land in Peru today.
01:04His family believe Jordan is stranded, unable to contact authorities for assistance.
01:09His family have set up a fundraiser which has raised about $45,000,
01:14which his family says will cover the cost of the high-altitude rescue workers,
01:18along with drone pilots and medical fees for when they find Jordan.
01:24Now, this region is quite popular with extreme hikers,
01:28but it has had a number of accidents over the past few years.
01:31In 2024, a 26-year-old Israeli backpacker went missing in the region
01:36and several weeks later her body was found at the bottom of a cliff.
01:40There have also been a number of reports over the past few years of altitude sickness by hikers,
01:46but friends and family of Jordan Yap say he is an experienced solo hiker
01:51and they're hoping with this ramped-up rescue effort that Jordan will be found alive and well.
