00:01Those heavy rains have appeared to largely ease over most of the city, but there's still
00:07many neighbourhoods and suburbs that are really experiencing still in the grips of this flooding
00:12emergency.
00:14Bangkok received about 300 millimetres of rain just over a 48 hour period.
00:19There's just an enormous volume of water that's wound its way into Bangkok.
00:24Now authorities are desperately trying to pump that flood water out, but there's really
00:28nowhere for it to go.
00:30The canals are at critical levels, drains as well too are really unable to deal with the
00:37volume of water that's there.
00:39We've seen vision of course of many neighbourhoods of Bangkok that are inundated, there's cars
00:45that are completely submerged, roads and major roads as well that are completely submerged
00:50too.
00:50We did see a break in the rain on Sunday where residents were sort of braving that flood water
00:56that they were wading through waste or even chest high water to try and stock up on supplies
01:01because many of them had been unable to leave their homes really for days with this significant
01:06rainfall and flooding.
01:08There are reports that some of the shops that they're going to are starting to run dry as
01:12well.
01:13So there's really prompted calls that people have been requesting assistance.
01:17There have been hundreds of shelters that were set up over the weekend which were housing
01:21about thousands of people or so.
01:23So while it does appear that that rain has eased, there's just still a significant amount
01:27of flood water that really has nowhere to go at this stage, Roz.
01:30So how long could this emergency last, Tim?
01:35Yeah, it could take days realistically and that's assuming that that rainfall does ease.
01:40The low pressure system has moved on largely west but officials have said that even if that
01:46maintains the case, that the rain is gone, that it could take days for them to try and deal
01:50with the flood waters again while those canals and drainage systems are still full.
01:54A public holiday has been declared for today and tomorrow.
01:57Schools are also closed so that people who can stay home are of course being encouraged
02:02to do so.
02:03The government said that that measure aims to ensure that travel and traffic disruptions
02:08for the public are minimised.
02:10But like I mentioned, you know, people have been unable to go to grocery stores and so on
02:15or those that they have been able to go to have been largely sort of, you know, out
02:19of stock.
02:20So people are really calling on and increasing their calls to try and get support and food
02:25delivered to these neighbourhoods where they're really experiencing the worst of the floodwaters.
