Willard and Dibs discuss Brock Purdy's performance through three weeks and break down Kyle Shanahan's response to a certain question he was asked postgame.
Transcript
00:00And I know there are other detractors out there who don't love to think about this
00:05or acknowledge this, but the 49ers have also become a career rehab facility.
00:11Take a look at what is happening, and this is why Kyle Shanahan is so awesome.
00:17Look at what happens when you get yourself around Kyle.
00:21Robert Sala has parlayed into two head coaching jobs.
00:25Two.
00:26Okay?
00:27D'Amico Ryans was sandwiched in between them.
00:29Head coach, Houston Texans.
00:32And then go a step further.
00:34It's not just the coaches.
00:35It's also the quarterbacks.
00:37So you bring someone in.
00:39They're a backup quarterback.
00:41They may get an opportunity to play a little bit.
00:44They may not.
00:45And then suddenly, if they do, they're going to look good,
00:48and the image kind of gets rehabbed, and all of a sudden the league is interested.
00:53Sam Darnold applies, and Mac Jones is going to be next.
00:57And he was, his name did come up in this New York Giants conversation
01:02as someone that they were targeting to bring in alongside or at least behind Jameis Winston.
01:08They settle on J.J. McCarthy for a fifth-round pick.
01:11Niners are not going to give up Mac Jones for a fifth-round pick.
01:14That would be malpractice.
01:15They're going to get probably a third-rounder if he walks on his own anyway.
01:19But that's what the 49ers have become.
01:22This is an opportunity for people who are looking for a gig to come in, work,
01:29and then get an even better gig.
01:31Or stay and be a part of a pretty positive situation as it currently stands.
01:37And you could even throw in such people as Mike LaFleur, who we saw yesterday,
01:42former Niner coach, Clint Kubiak, undefeated in Vegas, former 49er coach.
01:48And so even further down the Shanahan coaching tree, so to speak,
01:52you find guys who have gone out and gotten jobs and then head coaching jobs.
01:56And so, yeah, if you're Raheem Morris, not that you need to rehab your career,
02:00you did just get fired as a head coach.
02:03And you probably have one more head coaching shot left to take.
02:07Maybe it'll be this upcoming year.
02:09Maybe you have to be here for a few.
02:10But no better place to go than with a guy who you know well
02:14and a team that is pretty talented.
02:16No doubt. No doubt.
02:17Dave in Fresno is next.
02:18Hi, Dave. We appreciate your call.
02:22Can't you get me in here.
02:24I'm a student of 95.7.
02:26I listen morning, noon, and night.
02:28Good for you, man.
02:29And I love the sports talk.
02:32And I love the sports talk.
02:33And I remember around preseason time, the talk was about injury
02:37and the Niners being this hurt team.
02:40And I remember Willis saying, you know,
02:42I don't understand where this is coming from.
02:44But I think you're starting to see now the worry was not that people were injured,
02:49that people have the potential to get injured.
02:52And I know right now, you're looking at the Niners,
02:54despite winning all these games and looking amazing,
02:58the drawback is obviously the people going down.
03:01And right now, I guess the glass half full news is that nobody's out for an extended period of time,
03:09which is good news.
03:11So we have that.
03:12I also want to give you credit, too, Mr. Willis.
03:14And you're not the only one, but I've been pretty skeptical on Brock,
03:19and you've been there every step of the way, man.
03:21This is why we love sports.
03:22This is why we love discussion.
03:24You know, you're able to change opinions.
03:26And what he's doing this year is amazing.
03:28It's three games.
03:29I know he's shown flashes in the past.
03:32So that's what people, if you were a fan of his before, you saw it.
03:35I just need to see more.
03:37And what he's doing and what Kyle's doing, it's just, it's changing my mind.
03:42It's changing my opinion.
03:44I hope they can keep it up.
03:45Because, man, this time last year, I would not say Brock was the one person we can't lose.
03:50Right now, I'm going to say he's the one person on this team we can't lose.
03:53You know, so what a difference a year makes.
03:57And I'm happy to see him doing well.
03:59He's always been a great guy.
04:01I don't know how you can't root for him.
04:02But you just want to say, at least I wanted to see more.
04:05But, again, you was there the whole step of the way.
04:08And that's why we love sports, man.
04:10That's why we love the discussion.
04:12Because we can revisit things.
04:14And who knows, maybe next week it might change other people's opinions.
04:19But I like what I'm seeing.
04:21And Shanahan and Brock are two individuals I've kind of been critical of in the past.
04:27But I like to see if this is a great feeling.
04:30Because we haven't really had a franchise quarterback, you know, since Steve Young.
04:34So, Brock, if he can keep this going and be there, it's been 30 years.
04:39You know?
04:40So, he loves to see him, man.
04:41And I appreciate you guys letting me, you know, talk for a little bit.
04:45And I'm curious to see what y'all have to say.
04:48But, yeah, thanks for having me on.
04:49Yeah, Dave, thanks.
04:50I think, you know, there have been guys who deserve the label of franchise QB since Steve Young.
04:56Alex Smith would be one.
04:57Alex Smith, Jeff Garcia, Colin Kaepernick for a period of time as well.
05:01They all deserve a mention in there.
05:02But I also understand to a degree kind of what Dave is getting at with regard to it feeling like
05:07you've got, like,
05:08a true long-term 26-year-old stud at the position and whatnot.
05:14But, look, you know, I don't really mind.
05:18He's right.
05:19Like, the discussion evolves.
05:20And everybody's opinions get to be what the opinions are.
05:23If you were early to the Brock party, if you were on time, if you were late, whatever.
05:29Whatever.
05:29That's all good.
05:30And even, you know, he brings up the injury issue at the beginning and says, like, you know,
05:35this is why people were concerned about injuries.
05:38Not because they were hurt at the time, but they had the potential to get injured.
05:42And I'm thinking, well, everybody has the potential to get injured.
05:46And only if it were all of the old dudes who were getting hurt would I then say, oh, you
05:53guys were right.
05:54There was no reason to think that they would stay healthy.
05:56But that's not who's gotten hurt.
05:58And especially with today's news that Mike Evans and Trent Williams are basically about to be back
06:04and not miss any time at all.
06:06Mike, maybe one game, it sounds like.
06:08Trent, none.
06:09Again, look at the walking wounded for the Niners.
06:13There's Bosa's 28 if you want.
06:16I don't call him an old guy, but he's a middle guy.
06:19But, look, Alfred Collins, C.J. West, Ricky Pearsall, Stribling, Tonjes, Romello Height, Michael Williams.
06:27These are babies.
06:29These are guys who haven't even had their 25th birthday yet who are getting hurt.
06:34So that has to be entered into the conversation.
06:38Those who are like the Niners are definitely going to get hurt because they're so old.
06:41It's not those guys who so far have filled up IR.
06:46Demarcus Robinson, 32.
06:48He's hurt.
06:49And, you know, you look at Nick Bosa.
06:51I do think that he's more on the older side.
06:53But, what, 28?
06:54He's going to be 29.
06:55He's been in the league a long time.
06:58But Trent Williams, Stinger, should be good to go on Sunday.
07:01Mike Evans, we don't quite know yet.
07:03But the other ones that you really have to, you know, kind of hold your breath on,
07:06Christian McCaffrey, who is 29, right?
07:10Not quite yet 30.
07:11Oh, I think he had the 30.
07:13Did he either have the 30 or he's about to have the 30?
07:15Let me look it up.
07:16And his check is another one.
07:17He's in his 14th year.
07:18Yeah, he's old.
07:19He's not super critical, but he's very important.
07:21Christian, 30 in June.
07:23Okay.
07:23He just turned 30.
07:24Okay.
07:24So, I mean, Kittle and Fred Warner, these are guys who are not necessarily, quote, old,
07:29but guys that you definitely want to keep your eye on.
07:32Yeah, I just, again, to me, if I look at that IR designated to return thing,
07:37if you really dive into it, you're largely looking, there might be an exception here or there,
07:43but you're actually largely looking at young guys who have gotten hurt,
07:46more so than the Trents and the Christians and the Kyles and the Georges,
07:50who were the ones that we were really worried about.
07:52Mike Evans, too.
07:53And I know he got dinged a little yesterday,
07:55but those are the guys we were really worried about coming into the year.
07:58Let's go to Mike in Oakland, who's next.
08:00Hi, Mike.
08:00Thanks for calling.
08:03Hey, good.
08:04How are you guys doing today?
08:05Awesome.
08:07Yeah, I just drove by the Coliseum.
08:09I had to remember driving by there.
08:10But, yeah, I wanted to recap the day.
08:13The previous caller mentioned also that not anybody was out for long term,
08:18but it's kind of funny because I know that Ricky Pearsall is out for long term,
08:21but it's funny how much he didn't impact the team if that caller Kenny would actually remember.
08:29Yeah, long story short, I want to give you guys some props for talking about some good stuff
08:34and taking all the way home here on 95.7 The Game, the sports leader beater.
08:38Thank you very much.
08:39Have a good one.
08:40I like that.
08:41Mike, thank you.
08:42Yeah, no, actually, it's not to dismiss Ricky Pearsall.
08:47It's that we knew about that a month before the season even started.
08:52And you mentioned, Tonjus.
08:54It's not that there are no season enders, but very few.
08:58The issue last year with all the injuries is that they kept coming fast and furious,
09:03and they were night nights.
09:05It was Bosa and then Mikel Williams and Fred and obviously Fred Warner.
09:11And then the second time that George got hurt, that obviously was a season ender.
09:15I know that was already in the playoffs, but he had a significant one early.
09:19Brock had one that was annoying because it was significant,
09:22but we didn't know week to week that it was significant.
09:25So these were all either 8, 9, 10, 11, or forever type injuries
09:32that you also knew in that moment that they were going to bleed into next year.
09:36You knew that the Bosa one was going to be tight
09:38and that the Mikel Williams one was probably going to bleed into the year.
09:41And we thought Kittles would too.
09:43Turns out it didn't, which is awesome.
09:45But that is one difference with this right now is that, you know,
09:52they might be back.
09:53They might be back.
09:54They're supposed to be back.
09:56Right.
09:56Some guys won't, like Tonjes, we'll be seeing next year.
09:59And, you know, there's a few of them that won't be back.
10:01But even Dijon Stribling, where he played, what, not even a full quarter?
10:06Was it a couple series, a couple drives?
10:08And that was it.
10:09And you hope that he's able to come back after 8 to 10 weeks.
10:12And it seems like that will be something that happens in November.
10:16But to your point, like, that's not an automatic season ender for Stribling.
10:21And he looked so good in camp that everyone's hopes were so high.
10:25I mean, Willard and Stribbs is your team name because he was so pumped.
10:28And it remains.
10:29It remains Willard and Stribbs.
10:31Nice.
10:31We are not changing that name.
10:34By the way, a lot of Brock talk today.
10:37I'm comfortable, fully comfortable with the word superstar.
10:40If you're not, that's fine.
10:42Call him a star.
10:43Call him a whatever.
10:45He's a system guy.
10:46He's a good player.
10:47He's a great player.
10:47Whatever.
10:48But I think right now, through three games, this guy has been probably more discussed
10:54by former quarterbacks around the league and former players and media analysts
10:59than any other player in the league.
11:00His stats are blowing everybody out.
11:02The Niners are 3-0.
11:04They're averaging 33 points a game.
11:05I don't know what's left to say.
11:07This guy, through three weeks, has been, at minimum, one of the faces of the league.
11:13And that certainly came to the Niner discussion today.
11:16Take a listen to Kyle Shanahan.
11:19It feels like that trust level is so high between the two.
11:23Kyle was asked about that, and here's what he said.
11:26Yeah, I'm very comfortable with Brock throwing the ball,
11:29and I feel like I've always been with him in that situation,
11:32just with the timeouts they had.
11:33And after us missing those extra points, I didn't look at it as they only needed two there
11:39on the last one.
11:40So I didn't really look at it as just run the clock out.
11:43You know, if we go three and out, whether we're running the clock or not,
11:46I feel like they're in a really good situation to go kick a field goal for the win.
11:49It might have been different if they needed more than that,
11:51but I almost looked at it as normal football.
11:53It was good to soften them up with a couple passes.
11:55Then we got our runs going.
11:57I thought it was such a huge run on second and 10.
11:59We ran an inside zone to Christian.
12:02I couldn't see exactly what happened, but I thought it got stuffed for like four yards.
12:05So it's a huge third and six, I'm thinking.
12:07But he kept his feet, and we kept pushing the pile,
12:10and I think he ended up getting like a 12-yard run on it,
12:12which felt like almost the biggest play of the day.
12:14Yeah, that one kind of really put the Niners in position to win the game a few different ways.
12:20But more from Shanahan yesterday with regard to how he views Brock and the job that he's doing.
12:26I mean, he just runs every play.
12:28We had a high-low on his long scramble, and he got flush from the pocket.
12:32I'm not sure exactly why.
12:33And then he just made a play, scrambling, which I was looking at the passes.
12:37So I was wondering why the ball wasn't in the air.
12:39Then he was running, and the fact that he scored on that was just an unbelievable play.
12:43I joked with Kittle, ruin that moment for him.
12:46And then it was an awesome job on the keeper.
12:47We ran that versus Miami in his first game, I remember, on the third and one.
12:50And he threw it to the low guy and missed a big touchdown over the top.
12:55And that could be experience right there because they had the low guy.
12:58Might have been able to force it to him to get a couple yards.
13:01But he ended up looking over him and saw Kittle uncovered and got a big touchdown.
13:05Has he ever trusted a QB this much?
13:09Have you ever had this level of, I guess, confidence, comfort as a play caller?
13:13And a quarterback is right now you do with Brock.
13:16Ah, yes.
13:17I had that with Matt in 16.
13:19Had it in Shaab way back in the day.
13:22And I've had it with Brock, I think, four years in a row now.
13:26So to me, the important part of that quote is not just that he's putting him alongside a then-MVP
13:33in Matt Ryan.
13:35I think Kyle was very sort of careful to point out, yes, not only do I have that trust in
13:40Brock, this ain't new.
13:42Right, four years, he said.
13:43Four years.
13:43I've had that trust in him for four years.
13:45And so when you look at the sequence of plays that he was describing there where you get the ball
13:50back, you're up two.
13:52And Arizona had, I believe, all three of their timeouts still.
13:56And you come out throwing.
13:58You and I both in separate counties, separate domiciles, I think, and the same thing, which is run the ball.
14:04You know, go ahead and run it.
14:06Actually, they had two timeouts left as I'm looking at the play-by-play.
14:09Yeah, it started with two.
14:10But still, you come out and you throw it for 11, the great one-handed grab from McCaffrey.
14:15And it's like, okay, you proved your point.
14:17Now run it.
14:18And then they throw it to juice incomplete.
14:20Clock stops with 2.03.
14:22And I was thinking, Shanahan, I mean, you're getting a little bit crazy here.
14:26And then CMC got the 12-yard run that he was describing where the entire team just kept pushing him
14:32and first down.
14:33And that basically was the game, but, you know, they had other things in mind.
14:37Yeah, that was the game-ender.
14:40I thought, like the Cardinals, there's about three or four different ways that this could go at that point.
14:45The Niners stayed aggressive in pushing the ball down the field.
14:49I think that's notable, seeing especially in moments like that,
14:54Kaz Shanahan has been accused in the past of being too conservative and not trusting his quarterback.
14:59Go back to think about Jimmy Garoppolo right before halftime of the Super Bowl against the Chiefs
15:05and then look at what he does right before halftime in a game like yesterday.
15:09You can say these are very different scenarios, and they are,
15:12because one is against a Super Bowl team in the Chiefs
15:15and the other one is against the Arizona Cardinals at Levi's Week 3.
15:18But I think the point remains.
15:20A lot of what at one time frustrated us about Kyle Shanahan has gone away
15:27because he now, he likes his quarterback a lot more.
15:31And I'm not saying he didn't like Jimmy.
15:32He did like Jimmy.
15:34He likes Brock more.
15:35He did not bring Jimmy's name up when asked if he's ever trusted his quarterback this much before.
15:41And I think if you just look at what he does from a play-calling standpoint,
15:45not only on that last drive, but throughout the course of games,
15:48he is drawing up plays that Brock Purdy has to make big throws on,
15:53and he has to execute, and he has that faith in him.
15:55So the entire playbook is open when it comes to Brock and Kyle Shanahan.
15:59Yeah.
16:00888-957-9570.
16:02Victory Monday.
16:03Taking your calls all day on just the vibe and the feel of winning these football games
16:09but constantly being stressed by injury.
16:11And then also Brock Purdy, who is experiencing just an epic run.
16:17He is leading the NFL in every category.
16:20He is three games away from becoming the highest-rated quarterback of all time.
16:25And I don't know that he quote-unquote looks different in terms of the way he executes an offense,
16:33but I do think he looks different in terms of sort of what I would call the swagger category.
16:39You know what I mean?
16:40I just think, and maybe that's because even when we saw him last year for a healthy portion of the
16:46year,
16:47even when he was playing, he admitted this, not 100%.
16:50The turf tour thing can really mess you up for a long time.
16:54It messed Burrow up last year as well.
16:56He's clearly healthy right now.
16:58And for me, I think the logo of his season is actually one of his very rare incompletions.
17:08And it was the jump pass yesterday.
17:10You don't even try something like that unless you are feeling it.
17:15Totally.
17:15In the zone.
17:16And we talked about this last week about, you know, the flow state and being in the zone.
17:20And even yesterday, 12 incomplete passes.
17:23But a lot of that was, I think, smart throws and predicated by Arizona,
17:27who did a good job of pressuring him in spots.
17:30And the other piece of it, Mark, that I'm seeing from Purdy is, it's just the calmness.
17:35And the game, it seems like the game has really slowed down.
17:38And he knows when to run.
17:40He knows what his skills are in terms of the speed and what he needs to do.
17:45And early in the game yesterday, he had a scramble, broken pocket.
17:48And he just got the 10.
17:49He dives forward, gets the first down.
17:51And that last run that he got, 40 yards, which got called back partly because of the Kittle hold,
17:57that was another example.
17:58And Shanahan was just saying that, like, he's looking for the ball to be in the air.
18:01But Purdy didn't like what he saw.
18:03And he saw a bunch of daylight in front of him.
18:05So you pull it down, you run it, and you make the play.
18:08Brock gets a lot of credit, not all the credit for this point that I'm about to make.
18:11Y'all watching all the games on Sunday or a lot of the games?
18:14Yep.
18:15Does anybody look more buttoned up than the Niners?
18:17They look pretty buttoned up.
18:19Buttoned up.
18:19Like, that's what I'm so excited about.
18:22The penalties are low.
18:24The turnovers are almost nonexistent.
18:26The assignments are handled.
18:30It is very much almost a Belichickian look right now.
18:34Do your job.
18:36And they are largely doing it.
18:38And some of them are doing it when they're just getting thrown in their next man up sort of situation.
18:45And that's good coaching.
18:47And that's why a team can continue to operate even with major injury.
18:52Watch some of the other games.
18:54And watch some of the crap that you see teams do.
18:58The Niners would not have done what Dallas did yesterday.
19:01Not right now.
19:02They would not have done that.
19:05Like, I mean, the Niners, Brock Purdy would not make the throws in the end zone that Drake May has
19:11made.
19:11They wouldn't do that.
19:14And quite frankly, you want to really come for someone you want to know who had the game by the
19:20you-know-what's yesterday?
19:22For every Ram fan out there who wants to complain about officiating, you had the lead and the ball, and
19:31you were about to end Denver.
19:34And Matt Stafford, through his career-leading pick six to an always-forever Niner,
19:41Hufunga!
19:43Hufunga!
19:44Takes off for a pick six the other way and flips the game.
19:48Like, that's on Stafford.
19:50Yeah.
19:50It's a bad read and a bad throw from the MVP.
19:53And these are the things I'm seeing around the league right now that a few teams, Niners, Chiefs, to a
20:00degree, Bills,
20:01they always feel a little loose because they're wacky and crazy.
20:04But those teams are not making those kinds of mistakes and decisions.
20:08They are very, very formulaic and buttoned up right now.
20:11And even yesterday, when you did have the only turnover of the game, which goes down as a turnover
20:17because you're about to receive the punt and it just happened to hit your guy.
20:21Because I was looking at how many giveaways they have this year, and they've given it away twice.
20:25The Brock pick and then the touched punt yesterday.
20:29Not quite a muff, but embarrassing and still a turnover.
20:32And you give up that, and Arizona scores from the 28-yard line to cut it to three.
20:38But even at that, it didn't snowball into, like you were talking about, the Stafford pick six,
20:43where that flips the game, and that basically is the reason why you lost.
20:47Niners give this one up.
20:48It gets cut to three.
20:50Unfortunate.
20:51A lot of football left.
20:52You get the ball back.
20:53You go down and you score a touchdown.
20:55Yeah, that's a pressurized drive.
20:56Like, the offense had to come back out on the field.
20:58You were up, whatever it was, 23-6?
21:0123-20.
21:01And then it's 23-20.
21:03And the offense, you're looking at them like, hey, you guys, you've got to go score.
21:07Or not even just a field goal.
21:08You've got to go score a touchdown right now.
21:10You cannot give the Cardinals the ball with an opportunity to take the lead.
21:15That was the way I was thinking as a fan.
21:18Offense, your job right now is just to keep playing keep away.
21:20You cannot let the Cardinals have a ball with a chance to take the lead.
21:24The defense is gassed and injured, and the offense did it.
21:27They never let the Cardinals have the ball when they had a chance to take the lead.
21:31Yeah.
21:31And I thought that was impressive and huge.
