Willard and Dibs react to the 49ers injuries from yesterday's win over the Cardinals. The injuries are finally hitting the veterans, though...
Transcript
00:00Kyle Shanahan today on the Mike Evans injury, and this is on the conference call with Assembled Media, and this
00:07one went a little sideways. Take a listen.
00:09Shouldn't it be long-term? We've got to see how it goes throughout the week. Guys have been in this
00:13position before, so we'll see how it goes.
00:16Yesterday there was a question about whether it was a rib or an oblique for Evans. Any clarity on that?
00:23Yeah, rib.
00:24Is it broken?
00:25It's about as much as I know. Just rib.
00:28He has a rib.
00:30It's a rib issue.
00:31Okay.
00:32We all have ribs.
00:35I hear what you're saying, but I'm just going to keep it with just ribs.
00:39Okay, that's Matt Barrows and Kyle Shanahan doing their new shtick, which is gaining popularity quickly.
00:48Possibly.
00:48Yeah, a little version of who's on first, what's on second.
00:51We all have a rib. We actually all have multiple ribs.
00:55Right. I'm just going to leave it at that. It's a rib.
00:59He has a rib. He has a rib. We all have ribs and stuff. Okay. I get it. And the
01:04other one was, and I don't even know if we've gotten the actual answer to Nick Bosa's calf.
01:10Was it on the twice surgically repaired leg or the once repaired leg?
01:15I was asked, and Kyle said he didn't know.
01:17Right. He didn't know.
01:18That's the question.
01:18And I know that sounds really evasive and stupid, but, and I'm not saying he doesn't know.
01:25I don't know if he knows, or at least at that time.
01:28I'm sure he probably knows a thing or two that he doesn't share.
01:33At the same time, like, the pecking order and the way that all works, Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch and
01:41whoever else out there, they're not the doctors.
01:45And they're not the ones examining Nick.
01:47And they do just kind of get the update.
01:49Like, they're out there doing their thing.
01:51They're out there practice.
01:52They're building a game plan.
01:53They're getting ready for the next week's team.
01:56They're not running down the hall to be like, I got to go be there at Nick's MRI so we
02:00can see what the hell is going on.
02:03So, they're receiving information.
02:05It's kind of like playing that telephone game when you're in kindergarten, when you go around the room, and the
02:10whole thing's different by the time you get to the end of the circle.
02:12So, I think it's that.
02:14He may kind of know, but he probably, A, doesn't want to be expansive, and, B, does not want to
02:20make a mistake.
02:21You don't want to say the wrong thing publicly about a player's health.
02:26You definitely don't want to do that.
02:27And it's not that he doesn't care like he's heartless, but he doesn't really care.
02:32Like, in the moment in the game, and he actually spoke to this yesterday in the postgame, he talked about
02:37how, well, you know, when you realize Mike Evans is out and stuff, well, it just changes certain plays that
02:42you're not going to call because they're Mike Evans plays, and they're, you know, it just kind of changes the
02:47way you go about it.
02:47And so, for Kyle, in the moment, he's thinking about the play calls, the laminated play sheet.
02:53He's not thinking about, is it a rib?
02:55Is it an oblique?
02:56Can Mike play football today or not?
02:58If it's no, all right, then we'll deal with it from there.
03:00And I'm sure by the time we get to tomorrow, and tomorrow's the off day, and then we get to
03:05Wednesday, it'll be, all right, Mike's going to be limited, or Mike's, you know, we're going to give Mike a
03:08week, whatever it is.
03:10He'll get more information as time goes on.
03:12We'll get to Brock in a little bit, and it is one of those days I want to just put
03:15out a disclaimer really quick to everybody listening.
03:18It is one of those days in the Bay, and we knew that it would be.
03:21We've known that it would be for a week.
03:22It is one of those days in the Bay where we could do a four-hour show on about six
03:27different things.
03:28But we can't do that.
03:29We've only got one show.
03:31So there will be pieces of this, but Steph Curry has been extended.
03:36He gave a little bit of money back.
03:38He didn't give a lot, a lot of money back.
03:41We can talk about that.
03:42Chris Dapps Porzingis is out indefinitely with a, quotes, health issue.
03:47We can talk about that.
03:49The Valkyries are awesome.
03:50That was tremendous yesterday.
03:53That was a total domination of Dallas in game one of their playoff series.
03:59Valhalla was out of control.
04:01Willie Adamas was there, and Gabby Williams listens to Too Short, which is, like, all of it is fantastic.
04:07And Mike Kruko retired, and I don't even know, like, we've said so much about this over the last couple
04:14of months.
04:15There's no way to put those emotions into words, and what was said down on the field,
04:20and the whole way that the Giants produced this, I thought, was very, very well done.
04:24And so, just cheers to Mike Kruko, and the tears flow, and then also the Giants brought to a close
04:33what I thought was the worst baseball season that I can remember of my adult life.
04:39And so, there's all of that, and then also, the Niners are 3-0, the injury bug still sort of
04:45hits,
04:45and Brock Purdy appears to be, so far, the best player in football.
04:50So, that's a lot.
04:51That's a lot. A lot going on.
04:53There's a lot going on.
04:54And the Niners are one of six unbeatens.
04:56Philadelphia tries to join the group of 3-0s tonight, but beyond that, you look at the Rams lose again.
05:02They're 1-2.
05:03Oh, it's so good. It's tough.
05:06Arizona obviously lost because you beat them, and then Seattle just didn't quite have enough
05:11to get it done against a backup quarterback on the East Coast.
05:15And so, yeah, for the Victory Monday, it's a victory, victory, victory Monday.
05:19It's a brilliant Monday.
05:21And then, add in the injury report we all just got, which is Mike Evans' day-to-day and may
05:26be ready as soon as this weekend.
05:28Trent Williams and Dre Greenlaw will be monitored but are considered good to go.
05:32And Mike L. Williams will have his practice window open, which means he has to play within three weeks.
05:39And so, put it this way, yesterday just got better.
05:44That's the way I look at it.
05:46Yesterday's win was already great, but it got better.
05:48It got better with this injury, I think.
05:50It got better because of what you're talking about, especially the Mike Evans piece,
05:53where in the moment I thought that it was going to be a lot worse than it is.
05:57And we don't know how bad it is, but the fact that he couldn't even get off the field.
06:02Right.
06:02Like, he couldn't breathe.
06:03I was thinking, like, maybe punctured lung or, like, you start to really, you know, let your mind wander.
06:09Because, yeah, he took a shot and, ow, it hurts, broken rib, whatever.
06:12But he couldn't even, like, get a breath.
06:15No, it looked awful.
06:16Yeah.
06:16It looked so painful.
06:17And so, here we are talking about, even though the news is good today, what does this feel like for
06:22all of you to watch 49er games?
06:25Because they're awesome, and they're 3-0, and their offense looks unstoppable right now.
06:30At the same time, there is just this exhausting, unending flow of the injury issue.
06:40You're at least being confronted with it seemingly constantly.
06:44So, that's what we're kind of talking about and what that's like for you when you're watching the game.
06:49Let's go to Austin in San Mateo.
06:51Hi, Austin.
06:51Thank you for calling in.
06:54Yo, man.
06:55Hey, you're welcome.
06:56Hey, I just feel like I'm overwhelmed by these injuries, but how long can it last?
07:02And also, I feel like these veterans, these OGs, I think they need two bye weeks.
07:07Two bye weeks, because the older you get, the more fragile you get, and they drop in, like, bowling pins.
07:13So, what do you guys think about that?
07:15An extra bye week for the veterans?
07:17So, Austin, basically, what you're proposing is that the 49ers, because obviously the league's not going to give them that,
07:23you're proposing a little load management for the 49ers.
07:28Yeah, yeah, yes, sir, yes, sir.
07:30Kyle Shanahan, man.
07:31Hey, man, get these veterans some rest.
07:34You know, we got some of the best veterans in the league,
07:36and, you know, they're getting, oh, we need them to last.
07:40You know, what you think about that?
07:42And Brock Purdy, you know, so far MVP in my books.
07:46Austin, yeah, and we'll get to that, too.
07:48Austin, appreciate it.
07:49I mean, here's what I'd say about that.
07:50The football culture won't allow it to sit healthy people.
07:55It's just not the way they do it.
07:56There's too much that goes into every game.
07:58However, I'll split the difference with you.
08:00I do think if there are nagging injuries, for example, let's take Mike Evans.
08:04Mike Evans may get to this weekend, and they're like, he could play,
08:10but why don't we buy a week?
08:11Why don't we buy a week, and we got Seattle the next week,
08:16and let's hold him for a week.
08:18I'm not saying that'll happen here,
08:19but I think there are moments where that is how they handled training camp,
08:23and that might be like when Nick Bosa's ready to come back.
08:26They may go, you know what, let's, he might be ready by week seven,
08:29and they'll go, you know what, let's hold him after the bye to week nine.
08:32So that's kind of load management-ish.
08:36Just be maybe a little conservative with those guys.
08:41I could see that being something that they kind of adopt.
08:45Well, with a 17-game schedule in over 18 weeks,
08:49and as far as a second bye, when they go to 18 games,
08:52eventually you will get two byes, I all but guarantee it.
08:55They did that in the Arena League, Arena Football, San Jose Sabercats.
08:59You would have an 18-game schedule, and you'd have two byes,
09:01and that makes the most sense in terms of expanding the schedule,
09:05and right now you're 3-0.
09:06So the Niners don't want to put it into cruise control, obviously,
09:10because you only have a one-game lead on Seattle,
09:13but you look at the next two, as you said, you've got Denver,
09:16then you go to Seattle.
09:18So do you want Evans to be able to play in both?
09:20Of course, but if it's iffy for Denver,
09:23you'd rather have him against Seattle.
09:25No doubt.
09:25And I'll also add in the Niners have two Thursday games this year,
09:28which do create mini-byes afterward.
09:31I know their first one was the first game and was overseas,
09:35so maybe it wouldn't have felt like that.
09:37But they do have another Thursday game, week 14,
09:41right before Christmas, against the Chargers,
09:43and they get a full 10 days off before they visit Arrowhead
09:46and the Kansas City Chiefs.
09:48And then the other thing I'll add to that conversation is,
09:51because I thought yesterday was the first day that it felt like it was
09:56kind of the old guy thing, with Trent Williams and Mike Evans
09:59both being the two that went out.
10:01These Niner injuries that we've been seeing so far are not the old guys.
10:05It's not.
10:06It's not.
10:07Like, I don't consider Nick Bosa an old guy, because he's not.
10:11George Kittle is older and has, I mean, the Kittle thing is unbelievable.
10:16It tore his Achilles in January.
10:19He looks like the best tight end in football.
10:21He looks great, yeah.
10:22He looks phenomenal.
10:23So that's crazy.
10:26And then outside of that, I'm looking at the list of injuries,
10:28and it is a lot of very young guys.
10:32It's a lot of rookies.
10:34Strebling is hurt.
10:35James Thompson Jr., Romello Height.
10:38So I don't know yet that the whole old guy thing is actually coming into play,
10:43especially since it sounds like Trent and Mike are relatively okay.
10:46I would put Nick among the, quote, old guys,
10:49because he's been in football now for, what, seven or eight seasons.
10:53So he's closer to the end than he is to the beginning,
10:56but it's not to discredit your point, because, yeah,
11:00Trent Williams is truly an old guy,
11:03and George Kittle is older coming off of his injury.
11:05If you look at just snap counts on offense right now,
11:09McCaffrey has played 108 snaps the entire year.
11:13That's normally like a game and a half for him.
11:15And Kittle is playing less, and Deebo's not playing that much.
11:18I think that to the load management point of the caller,
11:21I think that they are actually kind of load managing in games.
11:24This is a great point,
11:25and you could probably find a stretch of games last year
11:29where Christian came close to 108 touches in three games.
11:34This year he only has 108 snaps.
11:38So it's a very fair point.
11:40They are load managing within the game.
11:43They've done it with Kittle as well so far.
11:44Yeah, and I think that when you get to a spot where you need yardage,
11:49you bring in McCaffrey, and you need a pass play,
11:51and you go to George Kittle.
11:52And beyond that, I think they've done a good job of using Farrell in there
11:56at the tight end, and Juszczyk, of course, is playing a ton.
11:58And McCaffrey, yesterday was an example.
12:01You pointed out in the crossover, eight snaps for Kalon Black.
12:04It's not that Kalon is in the doghouse,
12:07but the Niners just didn't have the ball that much.
12:09They didn't have the ball very much.
12:11It was a close game.
12:12Christian obviously was feeling good, and Christian looked great.
12:16He was running the ball well.
12:18Jonathan in the city is next.
12:19Hi, Jonathan.
12:20Thanks for calling.
12:22Hey, good afternoon.
12:23Thanks for taking my phone call.
12:25Happy Victory Monday.
12:27Yes, sir.
12:27I just want to say, great game, especially the offense.
12:31Other than Purdy trying to force the ball to Mike Evans,
12:35when he was black and covered by like four or five guys,
12:39the better read was to go to McCaffrey on a check down wide open.
12:44Nothing but green grass in front of McCaffrey.
12:46So great, great game again for Purdy in the offense and the O-line.
12:51Also a great day, play calling.
12:53Shannon, especially the boom play.
12:55The pass back to Debo, a great block by Farrell.
13:02So Shanahan had a great day, play calling.
13:07Almost perfect, but I didn't like how he's sending Mike Evans over the middle too much.
13:12So Kyle Shanahan, can you possibly and stuff not send Mike Evans over the middle too much?
13:19I'm just enjoying every win.
13:22Keep stacking it up.
13:23Hopefully this year, it doesn't over-promise, under-deliver.
13:28Go Niners.
13:29Go Niners.
13:29Jonathan, thank you.
13:31I respect Jonathan's opinion and understand where he's coming from.
13:35I don't think you can play football that way.
13:37You can't limit your route tree and be like, Mike, you're 32 or 33,
13:42so you don't go into the middle of the field.
13:44My God, this is the NFL,
13:45and if the defense gets the idea that you're only staying on the outside, you're dead.
13:49You will not be effective in this league.
13:52Mike got hit.
13:53He took a bad one.
13:54It actually, it sounds like he took it and he's going to brush it off,
13:58like he's done his entire career except for last year.
14:01So, look, he's a phenomenal receiver, and you can only protect these guys so much.
14:07Yeah, and he actually, when he got hit, it was not the over-the-middle.
14:12The one that Jonathan was talking about was the incomplete pass where Evans couldn't even really go up
14:16and try to challenge it because he was already hurt his oblique or his rib,
14:20but he got hit on a shorter throw, and, you know, the hook and lateral was unbelievable,
14:26and I'm glad that Jonathan pointed it out because I've watched it now like four or five times,
14:30and you see Farrell just, he gets out there, and he wants to block,
14:34but he knows he can't block until the pass has been completed, and so he's just kind of out there,
14:38and then pow, now I'm blocking, and here comes Debo.
14:41The execution was just perfect.
14:43It was absolutely perfect, and real quick, hey, just shout out to anyone who said two and a half years
14:51ago
14:52that Debo lost a step.
14:54That was one of the top five speeds that any NFL player has hit so far this year.
15:01Wow.
15:02He went up over 20 miles an hour down the left sideline, so, and maybe he gained a step back.
15:08I know he lost some weight.
15:10You know what I mean?
15:10He got motivated.
15:12He looks great.
15:12He looked, I mean, look, he's still an unorthodox player out there, but.
15:17It's the way he runs that makes me think that he's, you know what I mean?
15:20Like, it's not that he's not fast.
15:23He's incredibly fast, but something about the way he runs, I don't know if it's, like, short steps
15:28or if there's, like, a little bit of a wiggle.
15:30He's got three trunks on his legs.
15:31Right, but.
15:32Or four legs.
15:33He's got three trunks.
15:33When you watch him, he doesn't look like, oh, my God, like, cowing.
15:37When he gets full speed, it's like, that guy's explosive.
15:39That guy is fast.
15:41Debo, it's like, you're not that fast, but no one can catch you somehow.
15:45Yeah, Grandy, what's up?
15:46Well, we got a super chat on the YouTube chat.
15:48Let's go.
15:48D Adams, 44.
15:51I think it's proximity bias.
15:53The Giants lost Dart and Burns for the season, and we'll be fine as long as no one rolls over
15:57Warner's ankle again.
15:59I mean, first of all, I don't even like bringing that stuff up, because when I did that last
16:02year, three plays later, he got hurt.
16:06But I think that this is a significant thing for us to keep in mind.
16:11I know it's hard to stay optimistic about injuries when you're a Niner fan, but the injuries that
16:19they have suffered so far this year are largely, not across the board, largely they are not
16:26season enders.
16:26And there are a lot of teams out there who cannot say that.
16:30They cannot say that.
16:31And then we talked about this Friday, and we got to add it in with Justin Jefferson and
16:35so many others, Jalen Coker.
16:39Go look at your receiver position in your fantasy league.
16:45Out of control.
16:47It's not Demarcus, Stribling, and Mike Evans.
16:51It's everybody.
16:53The whole league is struggling to keep wide receivers on the field.
16:58I don't know what it is.
16:59I don't know what's going on so far.
17:00But it's wild.
17:02It is unbelievable what that position has been ravaged already through these first three weeks.
17:09No doubt.
17:09And even Justin Jefferson, who went out yesterday for a time, I think he's going to be okay
17:14going forward.
17:15Okay, but he's going to be a maybe for this week.
17:18But yes, he avoided the high ankle.
17:20Yes.
17:20And I mean, I've got Nico Collins, and who knows when he's going to play again.
17:23And on and on, you go all the way down the list.
17:26Puka Nakua hasn't played since Australia.
17:29Oh, did you see the Adam Schefter Puka Nakua tweet?
17:32No, I missed it.
17:334.30 in the morning.
17:35We'll do it in a minute.
17:36Okay.
17:36We'll do that at three.
17:37I just want to read it and get your, especially since you haven't seen it, the oddest injury
17:44update tweet I've ever seen in my entire life.
17:47Okay.
17:50Grandy gave me a look when I just brought it up.
17:53Wasn't that the weirdest thing you've ever seen?
17:55And he's upset because Puka's on his team.
17:57Yeah, man.
17:58It's the weirdest tweet.
18:01Yeah, and he's mad because Stiney took him behind the woodshed this week.
18:05Well, that was already over.
18:06Yeah.
18:06He had Drake, London, and Bichon.
18:08He knew that.
18:08I ended up having a pretty good week.
18:09I'm so good.
18:10I'm confident.
18:11Okay.
18:12Confident in what?
18:12My team.
18:13Oh, that's fine.
18:14Be confident in the team.
18:15He needs 41 and change from whomever he has tonight.
18:18Oh, you're not getting mad.
18:19Oh, no.
18:19I just mean in general.
18:20Just mean in general.
18:21Yeah.
18:21Yeah.
18:21Yeah.
18:22I got a one and two team that I like.
18:23It's fine.
18:24Okay.
