00:05best to protect the beaches, but you can't fool Mother Nature. She's in charge. She always has the last word.
00:13Big waves there. Residents along the Jersey Shore are getting ready for a powerful nor'easter moving up the coast.
00:20We're going to continue to track this already seeing impacts in places like Virginia Beach, though it's still a developing
00:26nor'easter and we're going to continue to track the impacts through the weekend.
00:30Yeah, a lot of impacts. Rain, wind, storm surge. Here you are with the coastal impacts, at least for kind
00:37of the next half of the storm's life cycle before we transition more to New England.
00:42Yes. So I mentioned Virginia Beach. That's one of the areas that we've been tracking very closely here because we
00:46were forecasting major coastal flooding.
00:49And we have really seen that so far, but we'll continue to watch as this tracks further to the north
00:55and we start to see impacts throughout the day tomorrow.
00:58Here's the timeline. Let's take it piece by piece. So our storm really organizes and strengthens tomorrow.
01:04That's when it becomes technically a nor'easter. Not really going to get into the semantics of the name, but
01:10just a little tidbit for you.
01:12Let's talk impacts. So Friday, here's where we see the rain.
01:15The wind is really the bigger concern and the bigger deal with this storm.
01:19By Saturday, this is when we're talking about the worst of the impacts.
01:23Really, Friday night to Saturday night, that 24-hour period, is where things are going to be the worst along
01:29the coast here.
01:30Now, places like New York City, you'll get a couple inches of rain.
01:33You'll be spared from the worst of the impacts, where we'll see those in places like Massachusetts Coast,
01:38into Rhode Island and other nearby spots with the heaviest rain as well, but the rain does go quite a
01:44bit inland.
01:45It's just not the heaviest rainfall that we're seeing along the coast.
01:49So Friday night to Sunday, during that peak period, here's the areas we're most concerned about for,
01:55especially that coastal flooding, beach erosion, coastal property damage, everything like that.
02:00Especially pay attention to these areas in red, where we're expecting major coastal flooding.
02:04Long Island and the Massachusetts Coast here are the two areas that we're watching most closely.
02:11Let's break down each hazard and each impact that we expect piece by piece.
02:16We talked about the coastal inundation, the coastal flooding.
02:19Now, here's the rain.
02:20We are expecting some heavy rain with this system, because what's happening is, yeah,
02:24it's offshore for somewhere like Virginia Beach now, so you're not really getting a lot of the rain,
02:28but it's going to move north and right into the coast, and that's where we're going to see problems.
02:32So look at the four to eight inch area here in the darkest green, so portions of Massachusetts here,
02:38and then off the coast, that's where we could see up to your AccuWeather local storm acts of 13 inches
02:43of rain.
02:44That on its own, that'll cause flash flooding, but then you combine that with the coastal inundation,
02:50the coastal flooding that we're expecting, a lot of problems.
02:53And all of this driven by the wind, we have added on the 60 to 80 mile per hour wind
02:58gusts area,
02:59and that's where we could see some of those 80 mile per hour gusts.
03:02Now, we're already regularly seeing the 30, 40 plus gusts at this point, but it's just going to get worse
03:09from here.
03:10And of course, that's going to lead to power outages.
03:12But one of the problems here is that the ground is going to be so, so saturated.
03:16And the trees, we haven't seen the leaves falling just yet.
03:19So that is going to give more fuel for trees, I mean, whole trees to fall, let alone the tree
03:25branches going flying and things like that.
03:27And that just ups our power outage risk.
03:29Now, we do think it stays regional.
03:30We're not talking about a widespread power disruption, but I mean, tens of thousands of addresses are going to be
03:36without power.
03:37So if you're in these areas highlighted on this map, make sure that you are preparing, you are ready, you
03:43know what to expect, and are ready for the power to go out.
03:47Now, things linger Sunday.
03:49We don't just flip a switch and all is well and good, the storm's gone.
03:53Especially the rain is really going to linger Sunday.
03:55But the stronger wind gusts and some of that coastal flooding, that's going to be a problem too.
