01:46On Tuesday, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said this when asked if Aaron Judge would be available for the wild card.
01:53Quotes, I'm not expecting it, but I'm not ruling it out either.
01:58With or without him, we're expected to go into the series and we know we can beat anyone when we
02:02play our game.
02:04And again, we made a big deal about it in terms of Boone saying not expecting Judge back.
02:08Everybody did. And apparently, Judge was watching our show on YouTube at Shine Time, saw the show, saw the clip,
02:18saw everybody talking about it.
02:20And Judge was not happy. And we now have a developing situation with Aaron Judge and Aaron Boone not on
02:28the same page.
02:29And this is a problem heading into the playoffs.
02:31And for Judge, who's very media savvy and very reserved and very Jeter-esque as a player in terms of
02:39being calculated with the news media,
02:42for Judge to say what he said, that tells me he's pissed.
02:47That tells me Aaron Judge is going to tell Aaron Boone, Brian Cashman, the medical staff,
02:55that he will be in the lineup for the New York Yankees next week in the wild card round against
03:00the Boston Red Sox.
03:01And by the way, we talked about this throughout the month of September and then when the news hit that
03:06he got hurt again.
03:07If he's back, he can't play the field? Can he? How is he going to run?
03:11Here's the other problem when it comes to Aaron Judge.
03:14As of now, he can't hit. Aaron Judge arguably is the most decorated right-handed hitter in the history of
03:23the American League.
03:24You look at Aaron Judge's resume and his career stats and what he's accomplished, obviously it's phenomenal.
03:30But this, this is damning. This is telling.
03:33Also, as expected, when you miss 100 games, you have a major injury.
03:40We talked about this on Shine Time.
03:43There was no way to expect that Aaron Judge was going to come back
03:48and he was going to be the greatest hitter in American League history
03:53from the right-handed side of the dish instantly.
03:56Nobody thought that was going to be the case.
03:58Now, he said he was now going to the minors for rehab assignment
04:01because he was going to play not only in those seven games,
04:04he was going to play last week and into this week and get ready for the postseason
04:07and the injury set it back.
04:10So, buckle up, Buttercup.
04:12Any way you want to phrase it, you have a salty judge.
04:15You have a Yankee team that has no punch and no juice on offense.
04:20Pitching is immaculate.
04:21No matter what, there's no excuse.
04:23You've got to be able to beat the Boston Red Sox.
04:25Yankees will play at home.
04:27Yankees will have Cam Schlittler on the bump.
04:28They better.
04:29I mean, for me, it's got to be Schlittler and Cole and Freed,
04:33one, two, three, in the wild card round.
04:35There's no question about it.
04:36You've got to win the series on pitching.
04:38You're not going to win it on offense because, obviously, if you have Judge,
04:43he's not going to be able to hit.
04:44And if you don't have Judge, I mean, the Yankees are not going to be able to hit.
04:47So, it's got to be Freed and it's got to be Schlittler
04:49and it's got to be Cole and those got to be the guys who are going to carry you
04:53to ultimately beating the Boston Red Sox and moving on and facing Tampa
04:57in the divisional round.
04:59So, this is a mess, a complete and utter mess.
05:03And, listen, you can include me on Team Judge here,
05:07not just because I think that Aaron Boone should have been fired a long time ago,
05:10but Judge was not happy that Boone talked very freely
05:15about the detail and the severity of his injury.
05:20I am going to be fascinated to see what's going to transpire
05:23between now and ultimately the starts of the postseason.
05:27Shohei Antony returned to the Dodgers lineup last night.
05:30It's one for four with a single, a walk, a couple strikeouts.
05:32Dodgers did lose to the Padres, five to one.
05:35Here's Dodgers manager Dave Roberts on what he saw.
05:39He looked good. He looked good, I thought.
05:41At-bat quality, good. There wasn't any chase.
05:46I thought he hit the ball hardest first at bat.
05:49You know, just missed a homer in that other bat.
05:51Took a walk, and so it was good.
05:54You know, it's been a while since he's played in a game,
05:56but it just felt like, you know, he wasn't sped up at all,
06:00and I think he came out of it pretty well.

07:39and now with Ohtani back, that's all I need to call it.
07:43This was the preseason take, the midseason take, and the National League is tough.
07:47Let's be crystal clear about that.
07:49I mean, they've got five, six teams that can take care of business
07:52when it's all said and done.
07:54And honestly, I think the Dodgers, once again, clearly the team to beat
07:58now that Ohtani's back in the lineup, had it played since early September.
08:01They had the shoulder, had the knee.
08:03That's all I need to see for the L.A. Dodgers.

08:08snapping the 11-game home winning streak for L.A.

08:12They now need just one win or a Diamondbacks loss

09:22I firmly believe the Padres are an absolute threat
09:28when it comes to winning in the National League.
09:40Welcome back to Thirsty Thursday on Shine Time.
09:43Joining us right now, one of the most respected voices in the baseball industry,
09:48my guy, the great John Heyman, New York Post baseball columnist,
09:51to break down the latest surrounding Aaron Judge, the Yankees,
09:55and everything going on in the world of baseball.
09:57John, let's get right into it, my friend.
09:59And what's the latest, what are you hearing,
10:02on Aaron Judge's status for the Wild Card Series next week?
10:06Well, right now it's kind of conflicting messages that we're getting, right?
10:10Aaron Judge clearly wants to play.
10:12He's trying his hardest to get out there,
10:14and he's suggesting that he's got a shot.
10:16Aaron Boone said it seems unlikely he'll be ready for the Wild Card Series,
10:21which normally you wouldn't say unless you're pretty sure that he's not going to make it.
10:25So right now we have a debate going on between the two Aarons.
10:29So we're just guessing to some degree.
10:32But there is some hope now, as when there was no hope a couple days ago.
10:37Yeah, you summed it up perfectly from a Yankee fan perspective.
10:40It goes from no hope to some hope.
10:42And Judge seemed pretty adamant here.
10:45Aaron Boone also did the opposite way.
10:47So I'm curious, because they're not on the same page.
10:52And the Judge commentary, the word choice he used,
10:56man, that went noted to me, John.
10:59In terms of Judge and Boone, where do things stand right now?
11:05Well, I've assumed the two guys love each other forever.
11:09You know, last year there was a disagreement over the arm situation,
11:14and as it turned out, Judge was okay with the arm, it seemed like, pretty much.
11:20I think he turned out to be optimistic, and I would lean toward that he was probably more right on
11:27that one.
11:28We will see on this one.
11:29Look, you know, these two guys are obviously very close.
11:32They have a very good relationship.
11:34And there are going to be bumps in the road, and if you read it correctly, I do think this
11:39is a little bit of a bump,
11:40because Judge suggested he kind of wished Boone hadn't said, revealed, that it was a moderate strain.
11:48You know, from our perspective, that isn't much.
11:51We waited four days for them to tell us whether it was a one, two, or three grade strain,
11:56and they really still haven't even said that.
11:58They just said moderate, which, you know, I guess it's probably not a one,
12:02which we probably would have guessed from the beginning, because if it's a one,
12:04if it's a low grade, they would have said it right away.
12:07So I don't think he revealed much by saying moderate,
12:10but Aaron Judge is of a mind that anything related to his health should be completely private.
12:17I think we understand that.
12:19The Yankees understand that.
12:20But, you know, after several days of kind of browbeating Boone and saying to him,
12:25well, I mean, you got to know, you can't keep saying, you know, I don't know,
12:28or it doesn't matter, because we do know that you know, and it does matter.
12:33He finally said moderate, which really isn't really telling us whether it's a one, two, or three.
12:37So I, you know, they may be at odds there,
12:40but I don't think this is a long-term situation between the two errants.
12:44John, it looks overwhelmingly likely that the Yankees are facing the Red Sox in the wild card series.
12:49If and when that is the matchup, how do you see it playing out?
12:54Well, I think the Yankees will be favored.
12:56Home field, they did beat them last year, certainly a three-game series.
12:59You got Schlittler going one of the games, certainly one or two.
13:03They haven't said yet.
13:04I would start them in one.
13:05I don't know.
13:06They seem to often like to pitch their best pitcher in game two.
13:09That goes back to Joe Torre, maybe.
13:11I'm not sure.
13:12I personally don't get that.
13:14But as long as in one or two, it's not that big a difference.
13:18You know, I personally would go with the hot hand and go with Rodon with the other game,
13:23either one or two.
13:24It doesn't feel that they're going that way.
13:26It could be Freed.
13:28Maybe Cole.
13:29We'll see.
13:30But to me, Rodon's been not as great, quite as great as Schlittler,
13:36but he's been pretty darn close.
13:38He's certainly been one of the best two or three pitchers in the league
13:41over the last seven starts since he has returned.
13:43But they have very good choices in terms of starting pitching.
13:47They have the best ERA in baseball, and they are the clear favorite.
13:52They've got choices, though, to make, particularly at third base as well.
13:55McMahon hit the grand slam.
13:57Maybe that helps him keep some of his job or all of his job.
14:02Volpe's going to get some action there, I think.
14:04We're going to see about him.
14:06Caballero's been pretty good at third.
14:07I mean, he may not be as great defensively as McMahon is,
14:10but he is pretty darn good as well.
14:12So they have options at third.
14:13They're not bad options.
14:14And they certainly have great options in the rotation.
14:18I'm going to say I don't think you can go wrong.
14:20But personally, I think Rodon has kind of earned it based on the hot hand,
14:25and I do believe in hot hands.
14:27So let me piggyback off that because, you know,
14:30obviously you are a must-follow on Twitter and a must-read, of course,
14:34in the New York Post.
14:35And you tweeted what you just described to us,
14:38that Schlittler and Rodon would be your choices, game one, game two.
14:41Now, by the way, I'm with you completely on Schlittler.
14:46Schlittler has to start game one, okay?
14:48I'm not waiting for game two.
14:49He starts to me game one.
14:51I don't even think it's a multiple-choice question.
14:54Game two, I don't agree with you.
14:57I would start Cole.
14:58That's me.
14:59I would also consider Freed before I would opt to go to Rodon.
15:03You're spitting facts, though, on Rodon and what he's done recently.
15:08So take us through your case for Rodon.
15:12And also, when you talk to the people in the Yankees organization,
15:17what's their lean right now?
15:19Because it is an embarrassment of riches in a wonderful way
15:22when it comes to the rotation.
15:23But this could obviously go wrong for the Yankees.
15:27Right.
15:28I think they have only right choices, but certainly it could go wrong.
15:31I think they're with you.
15:32You know, I don't know if you're part of their decision-making process,
15:36but I think they kind of defer to the career of the guys
15:41in the back of the baseball card
15:43and the fact that Cole is a potential and probable Hall of Famer, Freed,
15:49maybe as well.
15:51Obviously, they were signed for even more money than Rodon,
15:54and Rodon has been kind of up and down, even with the Yankees.
15:58To some degree, all extremely talented guys.
16:02But to me, right now, he's got his slider back.
16:06He's rediscovered it.
16:07He has been absolutely dominant.
16:09Hitters are hitting about 140 off of him over the last seven starts.
16:16So I'm going to go with a guy who is dominating lately.
16:19I also a little bit prefer a lefty against Boston,
16:22although they actually have a better record against left,
16:26slightly better record against lefties this year.
16:28So that's the way I would go.
16:30I do think that Freed is the definite possibility.
16:33I don't think it's guaranteed to be Cole,
16:35but, you know, the Yankees do have a hierarchy,
16:39and certainly they often seem to, and I don't blame them, really.
16:43Their Hall of Famers defer to Judge and Cole.
16:47So I'm not going to be shocked if it's Cole.
16:50I'm certainly not going to be shocked if it's Freed.
16:51I will be shocked if they take me up on my suggestion
16:55and go with Rodon in Game 2.
16:58By the way, if Judge does play,
17:01John, can he play the outfield?
17:03I'm fascinated to see how this is going to play out here
17:06because you referenced lineup decisions.
17:09That's one that I'm trying to wrap my brain around.
17:12What if Judge is able to play,
17:14talks his way into the lineup,
17:15it's Aaron Judge, okay, I get it.
17:17Is he going to be healthy enough to play in the outfield?
17:21Well, I'm glad you asked that,
17:22and I'm going to give you my opinion,
17:24and this is not a medical opinion
17:25because I did not go to medical school.
17:27I'm not a doctor,
17:28but everything you hear about the soleus muscle
17:31being close to the Achilles
17:32and the fact that it is not the lowest grade strength.
17:36We don't know exactly what grade it is,
17:37but we heard it was moderate,
17:39and I take Aaron Boone at his word on that.
17:43So I think it's too risky.
17:46My own opinion to go out there within two weeks
17:48and play the outfield,
17:51I just don't see it.
17:53We saw that Soto had a low grade strain,
17:57and a very quick healer,
17:59was out two and a half weeks early in the year.
18:01Now we've seen other calf injuries
18:03take much, much, much longer than that.
18:05Lindor, who's a very fast healer, three months.
18:08Now that was a high grade strain, obviously.
18:10We can see that now.
18:11And certainly we've seen Stanton
18:14miss the bulk of the season
18:15with a variety of calf strains.
18:18And, you know, I just don't want to risk anything next year.
18:22Next year may be delayed.
18:23People are going to say anyway,
18:24but I don't want to risk next year for,
18:27and I get the judge is the best player in the league
18:30when healthy, but he is not healthy.
18:33And he only had 23 at bats.
18:35He had four singles.
18:36I'm sorry, four hits, three singles,
18:38one home run,
18:39and a five-something OPS
18:41in the time that he was batting.
18:43And now he's not even taking live batting practice.
18:46So I'm not even sure at this point
18:48how much of it,
18:49and now he's an upgrade over anybody, I'm sure,
18:52but how much of an upgrade is he over
18:53a DH situation,
18:55which is already extremely talented
18:57and really a logjam.
18:59When you've got Goldschmidt,
19:00you've got Garcia,
19:01you've got Rice,
19:02you've got a lot of great DH options at this point.
19:06I'm envisioning,
19:07you know,
19:08you've got a little extra room for the roster
19:10because you only need three starters,
19:12so you don't need 14 pitchers.
19:14You've got a little extra room.
19:15I'm envisioning one of them
19:17between Stanton and Judge,
19:19potentially, maybe,
19:21this is a maybe,
19:22being on as a potential pinch hitter
19:24and pulling the Kirk Gibson moment for the Yankees.
19:28That's all that I think
19:30that they should be hoping for at this moment.
19:32Now, Stanton is seeing live batting practice
19:36and running,
19:38so to me,
19:39even though he hasn't hit
19:40in a major league game for months,
19:42to me,
19:43he's more possible than Judge at this moment.
19:46But maybe they can find room for two pinch hitters
19:49since you don't need a fourth starter
19:50or a fifth starter.
19:52I don't know,
19:53but I mean,
19:53for the outfield,
19:54again,
19:55I'm not a doctor,
19:56but we're,
19:57you know,
19:57he's not even going to be two weeks
19:59after suffering this
20:01moderate strain
20:02of the solium muscle.
20:04It would be kind of surprising
20:07if he's able to play the outfield
20:08without incident.
20:09That's why I asked the question,
20:10and that's why I went nuts
20:11on this topic earlier this week
20:13here on Shine Time,
20:13because I'm,
20:15I don't have a medical degree either,
20:16but I'm struggling to find a way
20:18that he could play in the outfield.
20:19So,
20:20you already have that logjam,
20:21and you have Goldschmidt,
20:22and you have Rice,
20:23and you have Garcia.
20:24So,
20:24I mean,
20:25these are issues here
20:26in terms of the Yankees,
20:27and we just showed that video
20:29of John Carlos Stanton running,
20:31and you reference it,
20:31you know,
20:32he's taking live batting practice,
20:33and in a related story,
20:35walking into the New York Post today,
20:36I saw Bigfoot standing on the corner,
20:38so anything's possible.
20:39Pigs might fly,
20:40and look,
20:41Stanton is a prolific
20:43postseason performer.
20:44He's also barely played this year.
20:47Do you think there's a shot
20:49he could be
20:50on the Yankees' roster
20:52for the wild card round?
20:54I do.
20:55I mean,
20:56he's now seeing live pitching,
20:58and he's running,
20:59so I think he could be
21:00on the roster.
21:01There is extra room
21:02to take that shot
21:04with Stanton,
21:05and,
21:06you know,
21:07it's not as much
21:08of a gamble.
21:09We know he's been out
21:10a long time
21:11with a multitude
21:12of calf injuries,
21:14but we have not heard
21:15it's the soleus muscle,
21:16which is down by the Achilles,
21:18which is what Judge has got,
21:19and frankly,
21:21I mean,
21:21it's less of a risk
21:22you don't want to risk
21:23judges next year
21:24when he's the best player
21:25in the league.
21:26I don't want to risk
21:26anyone's next year,
21:27but certainly the postseason
21:29is important,
21:30and we don't have
21:31all the information
21:32on what exactly
21:33what muscle it was
21:34with Stanton
21:35or what grade it was,
21:36but he's had a lot
21:38of time,
21:39obviously,
21:39and he is now
21:40ahead of Judge
21:41and more ready
21:43to perform
21:44at this moment,
21:45so I could see him

22:58can't make it
