Mike Macdonald apologizes to Sean Payton

Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald has apologized to Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton after a private story about a 2024 dispute between the teams unexpectedly became public.  Macdonald discussed the incident on a podcast, explaining how the Seahawks had used roughly 100 plays from Broncos training-camp practices while preparing to face Denver. According to Macdonald, Payton became upset after learning the footage had been obtained from fans and threatened to make the matter public as a potential NFL filming-rules violation.  Macdonald recalled thinking, “Oh my God. We didn’t cheat,” while describing the disagreement. He said the Seahawks warned that they would pursue legal action if Payton publicly accused them of wrongdoing.  After the podcast discussion spread online, Macdonald contacted Payton to apologize for making the private exchange public. “It’s something that I didn’t intend for public use,” he explained, adding that he felt it was appropriate to apologize because the situation affected Payton and the Broncos in real time.  Macdonald acknowledged, “I’ve got to be better,” and called it “a lesson learned.” He also said, “I’m responsible for what I say,” and admitted, “So I fell short in that moment.”  Macdonald said Payton handled the situation well and expressed respect for him and his coaching program. 00:11But, you know, it just felt like it was the most appropriate thing to reach out to Sean

00:16and really just apologize to him for having that end up be public where it wasn't meant to.

00:24So I just, and, you know, you're kind of something that they have to deal with in real time

00:28that wasn't really, you know, on their end.

00:30So that's really where you're like, crap.

00:34But it's a lesson learned.

00:35You know, honestly, it's, I got to be better in that moment for understanding, like, look,

00:41I'm responsible for what I say really no matter the circumstance, whether you're mic'd up,

00:46whether you're not, whether you have a certain type of understanding.

00:51So, you know, I fell short in that moment.

00:52So it stings for me, frankly, but it's something that I'm definitely going to learn from.

00:59And just a good example.

01:01We just, you know, we've got to take responsibility for the things that we say.

01:25but I really appreciate how he handled it.
