Butker’s 69-Yard Kick Sparks NFL Scoring Controversy

Harrison Butker stunned NFL fans during the Chiefs’ preseason matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by drilling a remarkable 69-yard field goal.

The kick came just before halftime and showed how dramatically long-range kicking has evolved in the NFL. Butker later played down the historic distance, saying, “You’ve got to make your kicks,” and explained that his focus was more on making important kicks consistently than celebrating a huge preseason kick.

He also admitted that the 43-yard attempt he missed later in the game bothered him more than the 69-yarder, saying, “It felt good off my foot,” while joking that he might have needed “some more caffeine.”

The bigger debate involves changes to NFL kicking balls introduced in recent seasons. Critics argue the modified footballs have contributed to increased success from extreme distances.

Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio previously compared the changing kicking environment to baseball’s steroid era, suggesting modern field-goal records may eventually need an “asterisk era.”

With kickers increasingly attempting 60-plus-yard field goals, the NFL could be entering a new era of scoring.
