00:22Let us pray, praise honour and glory be to you O Christ who your
00:29faithless disciple Judas sold for a vile sum of money to the Jews who were persecuting
00:35you and conspiring against your life. Root out, I beg you, from my heart, all evil love
00:42of any creature. Grant that I may never prefer anything to you. May I always show the most
00:51perfect charity towards all men, especially those who trouble me. Pardon me, my Holy Redeemer,
00:59for having so often prepared vain and perishable things to you and for having, for the sake
01:05of vile pleasures, turned myself from you. Praise, honour and glory be to you O Christ
01:12who ate the Passover with your disciples at Jerusalem according to the commandments of
01:18the law, giving them an example of humility and holy love by kneeling down on the ground
01:24and washing their feet, wiping them with a linen cloth. I pray that this your example
01:31may penetrate my soul, destroying thoroughly any haughtiness and pride within me. Give me,
01:39O Lord, the deepest humility that I may without delay perform the lowest ministry to all men.
01:46Give me perfect obedience that I may with complete diligence observe as your commandments whatever
01:52your appointed representatives may decide. Give me the most fervent charity that I may sincerely love
02:02all mankind. Praise, honour and glory be to you O Christ who out of your unspeakable love gave us the
02:11sacrament of the Eucharist and in it given yourself to us with wondrous liberality so that you might remain
02:20with us even bodily unto the end of the world. Grant me, I beg you O Lord, an earnest longing
02:28and
02:29in kindle in my innermost soul an intense hunger for this adorable sacrament. Grant that when I go to
02:37the table of life I may receive you with chaste affection, complete humility and perfect purity of
02:44heart. May my soul so thirst for you now and so languish in your love that I may one day
02:52be found
02:52suitable to enjoy the delights of your eternal kingdom to the glory everlasting of your name.
03:00Praise, honour and glory be to you O Christ who when you were about to leave the world,
03:06commanded and comforted with words of unspeakable sweetness your disciples and most earnestly
03:14commended them in prayer to your Father, most plainly showing how tenderly you loved them and us who were
03:22to believe through their word. Grant that my heart may ever more relish your word and that I may find
03:31your words sweeter than honey to my taste. O that the spirit of that burning exhortation may so glide
03:39into my heart that I may be wholly transformed into your love. So direct all my ways O Lord my
03:47God
03:48that your holy will may be done in and by me for ever and ever.
03:54Praise and honour and glory be to you O Christ who went out with your disciples across the Kedron Brook
04:01and came into the garden which you knew would be where you would be taken. May I entirely give up
04:10my
04:10will and always follow and love yours. May I for your honour and for the salvation of my brothers and
04:17sisters boldly endure any adversity and be willing even to lay down my life if your divine providence
04:25should so ordain it. Praise honour and glory be to you O Christ who as your passion drew nigh began
04:34to
04:34be fought sorrowful and sad with a heavy heart and so that by transferring the weakness of all your members
04:41to yourself you might be able to console and strengthen them when they were in their time of fear at
04:48the
04:48approach of death by this your own weakness which you have willingly taken upon you. Preserve me I beg you
04:58both from the immoderate sorrow and from foolish gladness. Grant that the grief which I have thus far
05:06endured may be for your glory and for the remission of my sins. Remove mercifully from me all distrust
05:14and unnecessary weakness and confirm and establish my soul whole in you. Praise and honour and glory be to
05:24you O Christ who fell prostrate on the ground and prayed to your Holy Father humbly offering your whole
05:30self to him saying your will be done give me grace in every necessity and trouble to fly to you
05:40in prayer
05:41and freely to resign and myself give myself up to your will. May I never unduly endeavour to escape from
05:51trouble but receive all things from your hand with a quiet mind and may I endure everything in meekness of
05:59spirit for your love. Amen. O Lord open our lips and our mouths shall sing your praise
06:17of spirit for your love. Amen. O Be joyful in the Lord, glory in the Lord, glory in the Lord.
06:24And come in all these prayers and triggers on. He is sure that the Lord, He is God.
06:40It is he that has made us and lost me ourselves.
06:46We are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
06:53Who put your way into his case with taxing,
06:59and into his cross with grace,
07:04be thankful unto him, and speak to the Lord of his name.
07:13For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting,
07:22and his truth and joy from generation to generation.
07:35Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
07:43and to the Holy Ghost,
07:47as it was in the beginning,
07:51his love and ever shall be,
07:56world without end,
08:03Amen.
08:16Bless this people's honour,
08:19The lightest message for him, and who see him in his love.
08:32Blessed is the man to whom the Lord in beautiful spirit,
08:41and in whose spirit there is no God.
08:49O my, I held my tongue, my words consumed away through my daily complaining.
09:04For thy hand is heavy upon me day and night,
09:12and thy voice carries like a draught in summer.
09:22I will acknowledge my sin unto thee,
09:28and my unrighteousness have I not been.
09:37I say I will confess my sin drawn to the Lord,
09:45and so thou forgavest the wickedness of my sin.
09:56For which shall every one that is God make his prayer unto thee,
10:02in a time when thou mayest be found.
10:10But in the great water floods they shall not come like me.
10:18For what a place to hide me!
10:24Thou shalt preserve me from trouble.
10:31Thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance.
10:39I will inform thee and teach thee in the way where thy love shall come,
10:50and I will guide thee in thy night.
10:55He will attract your horse and you,
11:01He will attract your horse and you,
11:02We shall no understanding.
11:06Whose clouds dost be held with bitter pride,
11:12Lest they fall upon thee.
11:16Great flames be made for the ungodly,
11:23But who so puteth his trust in the Lord,
11:28Mercy and praiseth him on every side.
11:33Be glad, he rise us, and rejoice in the Lord,
11:39And be joyful for ye as our true Lord.
11:54Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
12:02And to the Holy Moons,
12:06As it was in the beginning,
12:10Tis now and ever shall we,
12:17While we must live.
12:22Amen.
12:40A reading from the Gospel according to St. Luke, Chapter 4.
12:48Moved by the power of the Spirit,
12:50Jesus returned to Galilee.
12:52Reports about him spread through all that neighbourhood,
12:56And he began to teach in the synagogues,
12:58And was honoured by everyone.
13:01Coming to Nazareth, where he had been brought up,
13:04But Jesus, as was his custom,
13:06Went on to the Sabbath into the synagogue,
13:09And stood up to read the scriptures.
13:12He was given the book of the prophet Isaiah.
13:15Jesus opened the book and found the place where it says,
13:18The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
13:21The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
13:22For he has consecrated me,
13:23To bring good news to the poor.
13:25He has sent me to proclaim release to captives,
13:28And restoration of sight to the blind,
13:32To set the oppressed at liberty,
13:34To proclaim the accepted year of the Lord.
13:39Then, closing the book and returning it to the attendants,
13:43He sat down.
13:45The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed upon him.
13:48And Jesus began,
13:51This very day, this passage has been fulfilled in your hearing.
13:58Then he began to tell them,
14:00Today this scripture has been fulfilled,
14:02Even as you heard it being read.
14:07All were speaking well of him,
14:09And were amazed at the gracious words coming from his men.
14:14They said,
14:15Isn't this Joseph's son?
14:18Jesus said to them,
14:21No doubt you will quote to me the proverb,
14:23Physician, heal yourself,
14:24And say,
14:26What we have heard that you did in Capernaum,
14:29Do here in your hometown too.
14:32I tell you the truth,
14:34No prophet is acceptable in his own town.
14:37But in truth I tell you,
14:39There were many widows in Israel in Elijah's days,
14:43When the sky was shut up for three and a half years,
14:46And there was a great famine all over the land.
14:49Yet Elijah was sent away to none of them,
14:52But only to a woman who was a widow,
14:55At Zarephath in silence.
14:59There were many lepers in Israel at the time of the prophet Elijah,
15:04Yet none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.
15:10When they heard this,
15:11The people in the synagogue were filled with rage.
15:13They got up,
15:14And forced him out of the town,
15:16And brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built,
15:19That they might throw him down the cliff.
15:23But he passed through the crowd,
15:25And went on his way.
15:29And so he went down to Capernaum,
15:31A town in Galilee,
15:32And on the Sabbath he began to teach the people.
15:36And they were amazed at his teaching,
15:38Because he spoke with such authority.
15:43In the synagogue there was a man,
15:44Who heard the spirit of an unclean demon,
15:47And he cried out with a loud voice,
15:49And he said,
15:50Lick this alone,
15:52Jesus of Nazareth!
15:53Have you come to destroy us?
15:55I know who you are,
15:57The Holy One of God!
16:00But Jesus rebuked him,
16:03Silence!
16:04Come out of him!
16:07Then after the demon threw the man down in their midst,
16:10He came out of him without hurting him.
16:13And they were amazed,
16:14And began to say to one another,
16:16What is happening here?
16:18For with authority and power,
16:20He commands the unclean spirits,
16:22And they obey him.
16:26After Jesus left the synagogue,
16:27He entered Simon's house.
16:30Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever,
16:33And they asked Jesus to help them.
16:36So he stood over her,
16:37And commanded the fever,
16:38And it left.
16:40Immediately,
16:41She got up,
16:42And began to circle.
16:45As the sun was setting,
16:47All those who had relatives sick with various diseases,
16:50Brought them to Jesus.
16:51He placed his hands on every one of them,
16:54And healed them.
16:55Demons also came out of many,
16:57Crying out,
16:58You are the Son of God!
17:00But he rebuked them,
17:02And would not allow them to speak,
17:03Because they knew that he was the Christ.
17:08The next morning,
17:09Jesus left,
17:10And went into a deserted place,
17:13And near the crowd was seeking him,
17:15And they came to him,
17:17And tried to keep him from leaving them.
17:20Jesus said to them,
17:21I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God,
17:24To the other towns too,
17:26For that is what I was sent to do.
17:30So he continued to preach,
17:32In the synagogues of Judea.
17:35This is the word of the Lord.
17:38Thanks be to God.
17:49Jesus had just triumphed over an evil spirit in Capernaum,
17:52And now he was moved by the Holy Spirit,
17:55To return to Nazareth,
17:58Effectively to go on to the offensive,
18:00Against the vested interests of the Jewish establishment,
18:04Who would come to despise him so vehemently.
18:08We read that it was the custom of Jesus,
18:11As a young man,
18:12To attend the synagogue,
18:14And it can safely be assumed,
18:16That he was one of a select number of people,
18:19Who were invited regularly,
18:21To read from the scriptures,
18:24And then to preach upon them.
18:27Indeed,
18:28Word had spread as to what he had been doing,
18:31So no doubt there was an atmosphere of anticipation,
18:34That this great teacher was intoned to preach in the synagogue.
18:39For a moment,
18:41We can compare the actions of Jesus with those of Paul,
18:44Who on his missionary journeys,
18:46Always started his ministry in the synagogue,
18:48As was fit and proper for someone of his status,
18:51In Jewish society.
18:56There is here also an endorsement,
18:59Of the habit of reading from the scriptures.
19:02For Jesus,
19:03To read from the prophets was automatic,
19:05It was something he had done,
19:07Since he had been a young man.
19:10The sense of verse 16,
19:12Is not only that it was his custom to go to the synagogue on the Sabbath,
19:16But that it was also his custom to read the scriptures.
19:22The reading from the day was from Isaiah 61,
19:25And having read,
19:26And handed the scroll back to the attendant,
19:29He sat down.
19:32There was a pregnant pause,
19:34An anticipation.
19:36What would he have to say about this?
19:40They did not have to wait long,
19:42And the first sentence was stunning in its directness,
19:45And the effect instant.
19:48He did not waste time,
19:50By going around the subject.
19:52He knew what the effect was going to be,
19:55And he was not going to be diverted.
19:57It was time,
19:58For him to start the serious part of his ministry.
20:02To claim his authority,
20:04And to begin preaching the gospel.
20:09When we have something to say,
20:11That we know will not go down very well in the ears of our listener.
20:15How often do we get on and say what we have to say?
20:19And how often do we try and avoid the issue for as long as possible?
20:24Before coating it with such a thick layer of sugar,
20:27That the listener cannot determine what it is that we actually read.
20:34But see how quickly people's opinions of Jesus could change.
20:38When Jesus finished the reading in the synagogue and started speaking,
20:42The congregation was in awe of him,
20:44And how he spoke.
20:46And yet by the time he finished speaking,
20:49They wanted simply to throw him over the edge of the cliff.
20:55By speaking the plain and simple truth,
20:59Jesus managed to totally enrage his listeners.
21:03Because this was not something they wanted to fear.
21:08So what was it that the people of Nazareth wanted from Jesus?
21:13We are told that they had heard what had happened in Capernaum,
21:16Which is not altogether surprising,
21:19And they wanted miracles performed in their own town too.
21:24However, as is often the case with people,
21:26Their priorities were completely wrong.
21:30To start, there was an element of scepticism.
21:34For this was not, surely, the son of the carpenter.
21:39Secondly, I suspect there was an element of jealousy,
21:42In that he had performed miracles in Capernaum,
21:45But not here in his own hometown.
21:50Furthermore, they were looking for a miracle,
21:53For the sake of seeing a miracle.
21:54Not because they believed,
21:56And had the need for one.
21:58They were hoping,
21:59That this carpenter's son from their own hometown,
22:02Would perform some sort of conjurist trick,
22:05For their entertainment.
22:09Jesus knew exactly what it was they wanted,
22:12And this is why he gave them such little regard.
22:15Scathing them with examples from the scriptures that they knew,
22:19Showing that in the past Elijah and Elisha,
22:22Had done their great works amongst foreigners and strangers,
22:25As opposed to amongst their own people.
22:29The truth can be painful for us to hear,
22:31And sometimes it can make us angry and resentful.
22:34Certainly so in this instance.
22:36For we hear that the congregation was so enraged,
22:40They had nothing but murder on their mind.
22:46So why is it that the prophet is never welcome,
22:48In his own hometown?
22:51What was it that stopped Jesus from performing miracles in Nazareth?
22:57The key perhaps,
22:58The key perhaps,
22:58Was the pre-judgment of the people,
23:00For they did not see beyond the man they thought was the son of the carpenter,
23:04And this was a fundamental block to their faith.
23:08In a way it is similar for us,
23:11For in our own towns we are well known from childhood,
23:14And our neighbours will remember all the misdemeanours of our youth,
23:18And we will be the subject of much gossip.
23:21If we are to return to our own towns and villages,
23:24Of our Christ-less years,
23:27These people will not see us as we are known,
23:30But think of how we were then,
23:31And looked down upon us with scorn.
23:34How could this person tell us what is right and wrong?
23:38For he is just as bad as one of us.
23:41Don't you remember when,
23:45Simply put,
23:47That is why it is necessary for us,
23:50To settle in a new place when we become Christians,
23:54To live in a place where our past is unknown,
23:57And cannot be gossiped over,
23:59Which does not undermine the work we do as Christians,
24:02In goodness and truth,
24:04Of the love of our Lord.
24:09We read of Jesus teaching in the synagogue,
24:12Not as one who has spent many years studying theology,
24:15And as one who thinks,
24:17But as one who knows.
24:20And this is the essential difference,
24:22For we read that he spoke with authority.
24:26This was someone who was not teaching,
24:28Because it was his way of making a living,
24:31But as one who was filled with the Spirit of God,
24:34And what a difference it makes.
24:38How refreshing it is,
24:39For us to be in church on a Sunday morning,
24:42And to hear someone preach with passion,
24:44With life,
24:45And a certain knowledge,
24:46That what he is saying is the truth.
24:51Most surely,
24:52We cannot wait to hear the words he is going to say,
24:56Next time.
25:01Then we can read of the confirmation of the domination,
25:05Of Jesus over Satan,
25:07Of the ultimate good over the ultimate evil,
25:10But not from the lips of Jesus himself,
25:14But more significantly,
25:16From Satan himself,
25:18No less.
25:19Have you come to destroy us?
25:24Surely this must be,
25:25An acknowledgement of the authority of Jesus,
25:28Over everything.
25:29Not only,
25:30But the demon knew instantly,
25:31Who it was in front of him,
25:33And the danger that posed to him.
25:37Note also the power of both the demon,
25:39And of Jesus.
25:41When he was commanded to leave,
25:43The demon threw the man on the ground,
25:45But he could not hurt him.
25:48Jesus had bound the demon,
25:49And although the poor man was thrown to the ground,
25:52The protection of Jesus was absolute.
25:58The passage suggests to us,
26:00That although we also,
26:02May be thrown to the ground from time to time,
26:06Jesus will certainly spare us from real injury,
26:09At the hand of Satan.
26:11For we are under his protection,
26:13Even if the enemy has dominion,
26:16Over the things of this world.
26:21To conclude,
26:22Notice the impact of this exorcism,
26:24On the congregation in the synagogue.
26:27To a man they are amazed and wonder,
26:28At the power and authority of Jesus.
26:32It was not enough,
26:34That they were impressed by his teaching.
26:36They were also to be treated,
26:37By a demonstration of this authority,
26:40In practice.
26:43Even in a household of believers,
26:46Even in a household of believers,
26:46And we must assume that those in Peter's household,
26:49Were believers.
26:50There can be found sickness.
26:54Being a Christian does not give us,
26:56A state of permanent physical health.
27:00Indeed in John 11.3 we read,
27:02Lord,
27:04The one you love is sick.
27:07What we should note however,
27:09Is the reaction of the family,
27:10For they asked Jesus to help.
27:13Immediately,
27:14Jesus commanded the fever to be gone,
27:17And Peter's mother-in-law was healed.
27:20And we should note that,
27:21If she did not merely get better,
27:23She was totally healed.
27:24For she got up from her sick bed,
27:27And prepared a meal for them all.
27:31There is a promise here,
27:33For Jesus always repays in full,
27:36The hospitality we show to him.
27:40Invited to Peter's house,
27:41Jesus immediately took care of their needs.
27:45If we invite Jesus into our lives,
27:48We too can expect our needs to be taken care of.
27:51All we have to do,
27:52Is ask.
27:56It had been,
27:57A truly busy day for our Lord.
28:00For most of us,
28:01Preaching in the synagogue would have been enough.
28:03But no,
28:04We have the healing of Peter's mother-in-law,
28:06And then in the evening,
28:08A long stream of the sick,
28:10Formed at the door to the house.
28:12People suffering from all kinds of problems,
28:15Looking for healing.
28:17So popular did Jesus prove to be,
28:21That the next morning,
28:22As he went out to leave the town,
28:24They tried to stop him.
28:27And again,
28:27Two thoughts occurred.
28:28The first being that Jesus had been given a mission.
28:31He was here on earth,
28:33To proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God,
28:35Far and wide,
28:36To as many as possible.
28:38And he had only a relatively short time,
28:40In which to do this.
28:45If God commissions us,
28:46To do a job of work in his name,
28:49Then we are duty bound to apply ourselves to this,
28:52Tirelessly.
28:54Yes,
28:55It is true that Jesus could have stayed,
28:56Throughout his entire ministry in Capernaum,
28:59And no doubt,
29:00Secured the faith of many.
29:02But like the farmer,
29:03He had to scatter the seed over as wide an area as possible,
29:07And in the process,
29:09Secure the faith of infinitely more.
29:14We read that Jesus was initially making for a deserted place,
29:19Before going on to the next town,
29:21He wanted time to rest and pray,
29:23To spend time teaching his disciples,
29:25In the quiet of the open countryside.
29:29This is important for all of us,
29:31For it is dangerous to think that we can work and work,
29:34Without ever taking a rest.
29:37We should remember the commandment to keep the Sabbath.
29:42It is important,
29:43To set aside time every week,
29:45Just for prayer and rest.
29:47And then we become fortified against temptation,
29:50For the week ahead.
29:52The more weary we become,
29:54The more open we become,
29:55To the lures of the deceiver.
29:57As we find it increasingly difficult,
30:00To distinguish the path ahead.
30:07Let us pray.
30:09O Lord we beseech you,
30:11Grant your people grace,
30:13To withstand the temptations of the world,
30:16The flesh and the devil,
30:18And with pure hearts and minds,
30:21Follow you the only God,
30:23Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
30:26Amen.
30:32May the Lord bless us,
30:33And keep us from all evil,
30:36Bringing us to everlasting life.
30:39Amen.
