00:14Bersatu Secretary-General Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said this should include whether
00:20the same consideration could be extended to other prisoners who meet the stipulated criteria.
00:26In a statement on Saturday, he said such an explanation was important to prevent perceptions
00:33of different treatment for the elite and influential compared with ordinary citizens.
00:38Azmin also called for all conditions imposed on Najib, including those relating to his house arrest,
00:43to be disclosed in detail to the public. He said greater transparency was needed to prevent public
00:50unease and anger that could undermine the integrity of the judiciary and public confidence in the
00:56country's legal system. Azmin said Bersatu respected Article 42 of the federal constitution which gives
01:03the young Di Pertuan Agong the power to grant pardons, reprieves and respites. He said the power
01:10of pardon under Article 42 applies to prisoners who are entitled to seek a pardon through the legal
01:17process. On Friday, Najib was granted a conditional pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his
01:24prison sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, subject to payment of a 50 million ringgit fine.
01:33The decision was made during the 64th meeting of the Federal Territories Pardons Board,
01:38chaired by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.
