Drake Maye: Fall From Grace? Expectations were sky-high for Year 3 QBs Drake Maye and Caleb Williams... Different directions?
Where are you on Drake Maye? Greg: Last season, he was the next Josh Allen. Now suddenly, he's Danny Dimes
Transcript
00:00Last season, he was the next Josh Allen.
00:03Now suddenly, Drake May is Danny Dimes.
00:06Like, I don't know.
00:08I don't think Danny Dimes makes that pass.
00:09He'll lose the game.
00:10You and Curtis, you turned on him.
00:13And Courtney's almost there as well.
00:15I'm not there yet.
00:16It's just in my mind, there has just been so many things.
00:19The more that I go back and think about last Wednesday,
00:24that it is a fall from grace.
00:25I just expected so much more from Drake to have a healthy offseason
00:30and come in with all of the hope in the world that we were going to see
00:33a build upon what we saw last season, and we didn't.
00:37Yeah, that's where I am, is the expectation for me for Drake May was
00:42he was going to come out there slinging it, looking amazing.
00:46Gunslinger.
00:47And not to be like...
00:50It's one game!
00:52I know, but great.
00:53It's one freaking game.
00:54It's really hard to be slinging it when you have two receivers running
00:57routes and nobody else.
00:58Max, protect on 75% of the plays.
01:01Let's get into Peyton Tully's immaculate inning again, okay?
01:04If you don't want to talk about one game, what else should we talk about?
01:06I mean, the guy who used to run the show over here said the season didn't
01:11start until after Thanksgiving for crying out loud.
01:13Yeah.
01:14Now...
01:14I didn't watch the game.
01:16I didn't watch the Cowboys game and Giants game, right?
01:20But based on what I heard is Jackson Dot had an unbelievable game, right?
01:26Mm-hmm.
01:26Yeah.
01:26And so when I look...
01:29Like, the two guys that I was watching this year, week one, there were two guys I
01:34had my eyes on.
01:35And that was Drake May and Caleb Williams.
01:38Yeah.
01:38Like, those were the two guys everybody was talking about.
01:41You know, we've been talking about it all offseason, how Drake May is now going to
01:45take that next step.
01:46One guy looked like he took that next step, and the other guy looked like he went in
01:53the other direction.
01:54And yes, I understand that it's one game, but my expectation for that one guy was not
02:00taking one or two steps back.
02:03Yeah.
02:03Can we just do a...
02:04For the Drake May pom-poms?
02:06Yeah.
02:07That's big.
02:07Did you expect more from Drake May in the season opener?
02:11Yeah.
02:12Obviously.
02:12Hell yeah.
02:13Everybody did.
02:13A lot more.
02:14So that's all we're saying.
02:15Right.
02:15So we all agree.
02:16That's not a fall from grace.
02:17Just because you didn't live up to expectation in one game is not a fall from grace.
02:21You don't think three interceptions is a fall from grace?
02:23No, it's a bad game.
02:25Quarterbacks across the NFL have bad games all the time.
02:27Great quarterbacks.
02:28Sean, would you say...
02:29Have awful games.
02:29Would you say he had a bad game or he had a bad quarter?
02:32I mean, you're on the road against the defending Super Bowl champions week one, and you got
02:38a lead in the football game.
02:39I mean, I don't know.
02:41I said he had a bad game.
02:42Right.
02:42So Matt Ryan had a good Super Bowl?
02:44Well, because...
02:45What are we doing, Greg?
02:47And this is the way I...
02:48And this is the way I...
02:49You're going to lead the game 28 to 3.
02:50It was only one quarter.
02:51This is the way I look at it.
02:53If he went out there and threw four touchdowns with 250 odds and was like, you know, 27 to
02:5735, we would be saying, wow, Drake May is the guy.
03:02What a game.
03:03He's headed like, you know, he's silenced any critics.
03:07But when you go the other way, so extreme in the sense of like, he had like a couple decent
03:16plays.
03:17But overall, he had a horrendous game.
03:20And I did not see that coming 1,000 miles away.
03:25And the other thing is that final drive, right?
03:27So I thought he played poorly in the fourth quarter leading up to that.
03:30But they had the fourth, third and 20, whatever it was.
03:34He got the first down.
03:35He scrambled for the fourth down.
03:37He played really well.
03:38He was hitting guys.
03:39He was hitting Matt Collins.
03:40He got them into that position.
03:41And I said, okay, wow.
03:43A touchdown pass here.
03:44And we forget everything.
03:45This is a great win.
03:46What a staple.
03:47What a statement victory to start the year, even after losing A.J. Brown.
03:50That's what I was saying, even after the two interceptions.
03:53And then when he threw that pick to lose the game, you heard Zoe.
03:58We all were disgusted.
04:00That was an inexcusable play, a decision that was even worse than the pass.
04:05But all three were inexcusable.
04:07But I'm saying that I would have forgiven the other two if you score a touchdown there.
04:10And so that interception was so backbreaking.
04:13No, no.
04:13And I get that.
04:14But I would have been like, even though there's nothing, there's no excuses to be made on any
04:20of those three touchdowns.
04:21The first one, excuse me, interceptions.
04:23The first one he threw into double coverage, like double coverage.
04:28I will say that again.
04:29So the reason he threw that, though, Wiggy, is because they ran the exact same play earlier.
04:33They had the shot.
04:35He checked down.
04:36He's colorblind.
04:37They clearly looked at it at halftime.
04:40And he blindly decided when they called that play, I'm going to make this throw.
04:43So that's the issue.
04:44But you're too good of a player to blindly make a decision out there.
04:48And that's what I'm going at.
04:49The second one, he threw the ball into the middle of the field with three guys around
04:53Pop Douglas.
04:54The second one, you might as well just hand it up to the guy.
04:57And Mago also said they've thrown an interception of that play like three times in the training
05:01camp.
05:01And you should learn.
05:03I can't believe that you're using the phrase fall from grace.
05:07I is not.
05:08She is not.
05:09Oh, my Lord.
05:09All right.
05:09Anyway, I'm on the edge.
05:11We have.
