Kenya’s quest to host an Africa Recording Academy headquarters received a boost Friday when the Recording Academy officials said plans to set the ball rolling on key milestones were underway and that Kenyan mentee artists would travel to the United States next month.

00:00Kenya is a step closer towards hosting the African Recording Academy headquarters.
00:07Officials from the Grammy organizing body on Friday said plans are underway to get the ball rolling.
00:14The Academy's president told a meeting in Nairobi that the project could kick off in June,
00:20when Kenya hosts the Africa Cup of Nations.
00:24We are looking at the period when AFCON is happening to do the first broader Grammy-branded activations in Kenya.
00:36That's important because it is a time when most of the world's attention will be looking at Kenya
00:43as a place that's hosting one of the biggest sporting tournaments on the planet.
00:48Well, it should look at Kenya as also welcoming the most important brand in music.
00:56Panay and other executives are in Nairobi as part of a creative economy collaboration between Kenya and the U.S.

01:05The Academy's Kenyan mentees are scheduled to travel to the U.S. next month.
01:10So the enrollment of members from Kenya, from the African continent into the Academy
01:19is a critical step to getting more and more Grammys to music made out of Africa.
01:26Not just in the African category, but in every category.
01:29That is critical.
01:30It's eventually what led to the creation of the Latin Academy.
01:35Since winning the bid to host the headquarters, Kenya has invested close to $4 million in the project.
