00:25and not go too crazy on the show bags.
00:29But I think there's definitely lots that you can do for free.
00:31Show bags got their start in the 1920s
00:34when samples were put together
00:36and vendors started charging between three and sixpence.
00:39In 1969, they were 30 cents, about $4.50 today.
00:45A lot of it was for medication or hair products, perfume,
00:50things like cornstarch, baby powder.
00:54In the 70s and 80s, show bags evolved,
00:57themed by popular movies and TV shows.

01:02The Bertie Beetle show bag is commonly used to measure inflation.
01:06From 1972 to 1988, it was 50 cents.
01:11From 89 to 2021, it set you back $2.
01:15In 2022, it jumped to $3.
01:17And this year, it costs $5.
01:20As for rides and sideshows...
01:22We've got an old sign that goes with one of our Dodgem cars,
01:24which is from sort of the 80s,
01:26and that puts all the rides at around $2 to $3.
01:29That's about $7 to $10 in today's money.
01:33This year's rides cost between $8 and $30.
01:37It's also the cost of them transporting that around the country,
01:40you know, obviously paying staff and things like that,
01:42and maintaining the ride and making sure that they stay up to safety standards.
01:45While prices are likely to keep rising,
01:48for many, the best things at the show are free.
