Disability nightclub opens as part of Adelaide Fringe Festival

The Adelaide Fringe is just days from closing after a marathon month long extravaganza, with more than a million tickets sold. But for one group of South Australians, the curtain goes up tonight and it’s their chance to take centre stage.

00:00DJs rock the house. A group of DJs is ready to present the Heartbeat Club, a nightclub

00:12set up for adults with a learning disability who say they sometimes feel unwelcome in nightclubs,

00:18but love the inclusive environment the dedicated space offers them.

00:23The feeling when you're up there, it's like, it's surreal, like you get in the vibe of your audience.

00:31We're playing our favourite song.

00:32A group within Adelaide's disabled community has successfully run its nightclub, the Heartbeat

00:37Club, on a smaller scale. Now it's ready for the big stage, that is The Finge.

00:45Every time when it comes to music it comes from the heart, it comes from the love of music

00:52and making new friends. It's just fun and it puts a smile on your face

00:57and I think everyone feels good. Even if the spotlight is a little daunting for some.

01:02When I'm up there I get a bit of stage fright, so what I do, I look over the tops of their heads

01:10and when they're dancing and having a ball I look straight in their faces and I enjoy it.
