01:13Fastest in a reduced practice session was Nikola Sollov,
01:18overall the championship leader at the top of the time.
01:22Well, that was practice, and now it's a case of who can continue
01:26to learn the circuit the fastest in this 30-minute qualifying session,
01:32which will set the grid for both the sprint race and the feature weight.
01:36We will reverse the top 10 on the grid for the sprint race tomorrow.
01:4023 laps it will be tomorrow, and 32 laps on Grand Prix Sunday.
01:45Two DRS zones which fall consecutively down the start-finish straight
01:49and on the run between turn 3 and 4.
01:5322 corners to navigate in total.
01:56La Monumental halfway through the lap,
01:59proving to be one of the biggest sighting points here this weekend,
02:04which will be lined with 45,000 spectators.
02:08The start of qualifying, as you can see, will be delayed
02:11as the car's just making their way around to the pit lane now.
02:14So more time for us to preview this session.
02:17Myself, Chris McCarthy, Alex Brundle alongside me.
02:20Alex, they did not get a huge amount of time in that practice session,
02:23so that's going to make this qualifying even more tricky if it wasn't already.
02:28Starting qualifying with an understatement, are we?
02:30There was a very, very short amount of running, really, wasn't there?
02:35Throughout free practice, charitably extended, however,
02:39the free practice session to give the drivers an extra few minutes
02:43and precious laps around the circuit.
02:47And they'll be desperately trying to understand these cars within that time frame,
02:53but it's going to be a question of still getting up to speed
02:56when they move to the soft tyre.
02:58Two sets of those available throughout qualifying.
03:01Track temperature, 52 degrees,
03:04so incredibly hot underneath the driver's air temp.
03:07Up at 28.
03:09What you can see is not part of the session.
03:11That's the Formula 2 drivers arriving
03:13from the feeder series paddock
03:16to the pit lane where they operate from
03:19for this qualifying session.
03:21And once they've done so and they are settled,
03:23we'll get qualifying underway.
03:25Absolutely. So in terms of the compound of tyre,
03:28we will see you can have the soft tyre and the hard tyre.
03:33So a compound jump in terms of what we have out there,
03:37which we talked about this a little before we came on air.
03:40This is going to make the feature race where there is a compulsory pit stop
03:44very entertaining and very challenging for the teams.
03:47Well, challenging because they don't really know
03:49what the performance is going to be over a race run.
03:52They only get a feel for the hard tyre, really,
03:55throughout free practice.
03:56That's the tyre everybody ran on.
03:58They get a qualifying lap on the soft,
04:00but then have to sort of estimate the performance
04:03of the soft tyre for the feature race,
04:05which is a relatively long one here in terms of lap count.
04:0932 laps will feel, I think, for a Formula 2 driver,
04:13like a bit of a marathon on Sunday.
04:16I can imagine this is going to be a physical race for them.
04:20Turn 12 with the heavy banking.
04:22It's going to be heavy in turn through the steering wheel
04:25and you never really stop turning around the 22 turns
04:28of the Mad Ring layout.
04:32And in terms of this qualifying session as well,
04:36it's a very long lap, isn't it?
04:38So you are almost managing tyres over the course
04:41of a qualifying lap and tyre preparation.
04:43We saw the hint of that in some of the practice sessions
04:46is also key as well.
04:48Well, it's warmer now than it was in practice.
04:50They're also on a softer compound a tyre
04:52and even in practice towards the end of a push lap,
04:57they were suffering with the overheating of the surface of the tyre.
05:01That's something to manage for the teams and the drivers.
05:05Circuits, as they all are, cut into three sectors.
05:08The first of those sectors here at this new circuit
05:11for Formula 1 and 2 ends basically after the first chicane.
05:17That's what's involved in the first one.
05:20And then as you make your way through,
05:22there's a sequence of slower speed corners,
05:25then the monumental right-hander,
05:28the very long, very banked area of the circuit.
05:33And then the second sector ends
05:36just before you make your way into turn 16.
05:39So first sector ends after turn 6,
05:42second sector ends on the way down to turn 16,
05:44then you've got the final sector,
05:45which is slower and more mechanical grip-focused.
05:49So that should give you a feel for what you're about to watch
05:51if you are not up-to-date and au fait
05:55with the nature of sectors in single-seater competition.
06:00A green one means that's the best sector
06:02the driver has done, their personal best.
06:05And if it's purple, that's the best of the session.
06:08Absolutely.
06:08So we've got a lot of curved approaches
06:10in braking zones around here as well.
06:13That's also a bit of a theme to this circuit,
06:16coming round turn 15 into turn 16, 17,
06:19then round turn 4 into 5 as well.
06:21Bit of a challenge for that one for the drivers as well.
06:24And manually, they're going to have to come with the DRS
06:26coming up towards turn 4 there as well.
06:28Yeah, DRS zone 2 will close
06:32before the sweep through turn 4,
06:34which sort of becomes the braking zone, really,
06:37for turn 5.
06:38So that's a manual closure,
06:41something the drivers have ever remembered to do
06:45or indeed not closed by a braking zone.
06:49And then the other DRS zone is down the front straight.
06:51Those are really, of course,
06:53more something for the drivers to remember
06:56in racing conditions
06:57when they're within a second of the driver ahead,
07:00but also, of course, available throughout qualifying
07:03to maximise their qualifying time.
07:05The focus will be here on understanding
07:09how this soft tyre works over a whole lap.
07:12And drivers will be trying to estimate
07:14how quickly they can go,
07:15how much throttle they can carry
07:17through the high-speed corners,
07:19turn 12, turn 19, and indeed turn 18.
07:23You know, where they're blending in and out of the throttle,
07:28they'll try and get a sense
07:29for how much more throttle they can take.
07:31Track limits was also a factor as well.
07:34It's actually what saw Cushmine's time deleted
07:37in that session, having gone quickest overall.
07:40Not just drivers running wide
07:42on the exit of the corner,
07:43but also on the inside of the corner as well.
07:44A lot of frustrating errors, it must be said,
07:47in the circuit layout.
07:50You can cut the apex of turn 18, turn 19,
07:54and find yourself actually losing your lap time
07:58because you've been all four wheels off the road.
08:00We've seen laps also lost on the exit of turn 17.
08:04That's more of an error from the drivers, it must be said,
08:06getting too deep and running out of road on the exit.
08:10A bit of a delay to the start,
08:11but we are now green for 30 minutes
08:14of qualifying in Formula 2.
08:16This to set the grid for the races this weekend.
08:19We've reversed the top 10 at the end of qualifying
08:23for the sprint race tomorrow,
08:26and then full points are available on Grand Prix Sunday
08:28in the 32-lap feature race.
08:32And everyone aligning the circuit
08:34and taking their seats,
08:35getting ready to watch the Formula 2 drivers go head-to-head.
08:39And what a prospect this is.
08:40They've only had a limited number of laps
08:43to learn this circuit,
08:45and now they're all going out on this soft tyre
08:47for the first time.
08:49So a big accident dominated free practice.
08:52Zinnavold in Tripuvizak will not take part in qualifying,
08:55found himself in the wall on the outside of turn 19.
08:57I would expect to see the full field
09:00go out as quickly as possible here
09:02and get a banker lap in
09:04to defend against this session being stopped.
09:07Absolutely so.
09:08We can see on board with Nikola Solov.
09:11In terms of the championship,
09:13he is leading by 11 points ahead of rapper Kamara.
09:17Joshua Dirksen will be looking to make it
09:19three wins in a row coming into this weekend.
09:22Gabriele Mini, 30 points back from Solov in the title fight.
09:27That's something that could very easily change this weekend.
09:31So those top three still very close together,
09:33but in particular the top two.
09:35Kamara has been taking points out of Nikola Solov
09:38over the course of the last two race weekends
09:41and now that championship lead could change this weekend.
09:45Yeah, only 11 points in him out front.
09:48Gabriele Mini still very much in the hunt as well
09:52in his Alpine junior livery.
09:54Kushmine looked strong earlier on,
09:56lost a lap to one of those track limits issues
10:00that we were describing,
10:01but looked fast around the layout here in Madrim.
10:04We'll be looking to try and gain a good grid position.
10:08The keys to be inside the top 10 here.
10:10Anything can happen throughout the feature race.
10:12It's an incredibly long pit lane here
10:15and therefore long pit stop loss.
10:18So a lot to play for,
10:19a lot of strategic intrigue as well.
10:22But picking up the points in the sprint race
10:25will involve, I think,
10:27being towards the front of the field.
10:28Even though it's wide in areas,
10:29it's going to be tricky to overtake once they get going.
10:33Kushmine used his experience well earlier
10:36and has done so throughout the season at times as well.
10:39Miami in particular,
10:41he was the one who went quickest in qualifying there.
10:44So experience can go a long way here.
10:46And we saw good performances
10:47from Van Amerswalt racing as well.
10:49Nico Verone, a very experienced driver
10:51across all manner of categories.
10:53He and Rafael Villegomez going quick
10:55in that practice session earlier.
10:57Building up to what is approaching racing speed,
11:00we see a lot of this kind of technique now
11:03in Formula 2
11:04with a sort of 80% racing speed lap
11:08to try to build in that temperature to the front tyre.
11:12On screen, you can see second in the championship.
11:15Rafa Canberra has qualified in the top two
11:17eight times this season.
11:18Let's hear what he had to say about qualifying
11:20coming into the weekend.
11:23Yeah, it looks very nice.
11:25Also on the same.
11:25I think the perspective of driving view
11:28is really that track said
11:31you need to be very brave in a way.
11:33So I think that is very nice.
11:35It gives you some good adrenaline as well
11:37during the lap.
11:37And I think that is something
11:39that the driver always likes in a way.
11:42So let's see how it will be tomorrow.
11:44We don't have a lot of laps to get used to the track.
11:46So we need to make sure
11:48that we know already what to do
11:50and put some good laps straight away,
11:54have a good read of the track
11:55and be ready for qualifying.
11:58Four front row starts in a row
12:00in the last four feature races
12:03for Rafa Canberra.
12:04His strongest part of this season
12:07has been those performances.
12:09He and the Invicta team
12:11going very well,
12:12locked out the front row last time out
12:14at Monza.
12:15But this, a very different challenge
12:17this weekend.
12:18Two tremendous performances
12:19last weekend.
12:20Invicta put in the car
12:21underneath Joshua Dirksen
12:23who took back-to-back race wins.
12:25Camera, though,
12:26once more found himself on pole position.
12:29Finished up in the feature race
12:30in second place.
12:31And clear Nikola Solov in that
12:34to bring himself closer
12:36towards the championship lead.
12:38As you mentioned, Chris,
12:39he's had an incredible sequence
12:42of qualifying sessions
12:44throughout this year.
12:45Let's go down towards turn one then.
12:47Here at the Maddering
12:47with Kushmaini
12:49who's going to jump
12:50all over that first curve
12:52at the lowest section
12:53of the racetrack.
12:55DRS will be open then
12:56as he arcs through turn four
12:59and towards what is
13:00a curved braking zone
13:02down towards turn five and six.
13:05He's going to clatter
13:06all over the curbs once more
13:08and miss the wall
13:08on the outsider six
13:09before moving through
13:11to the bunker section.
13:13Blind and over the hill
13:14to the right.
13:15He's got to miss that wall
13:16on the exit
13:17and roll through the middle
13:18of turn nine.
13:20The chicane is up next
13:21reducing their speed
13:22before they make their way
13:23into the long
13:24banked right-hander
13:26at 24%.
13:28Over 500 metres
13:29that is the Monumental.
13:32Not flat, I don't think,
13:33in a Formula 2 car
13:34but bumpy
13:35down near the apex
13:36of the Monumental.
13:37It's a braking zone
13:38for turn 13
13:39with a wide section
13:41of racetrack up next.

13:45out of the throttle
13:46through 14 and 15.

13:54as he makes his way

14:24he could be over.
14:24So he's hit the wall
14:25with the rear
14:26of the car.
14:27Look, you can see it
14:28grabbing and moving
14:29around nastily
14:30also damaged
14:31towards the front end.
14:32He'll be trying
14:32to get that back
14:33to the pit lane.
14:34The yellow flag
14:34was out
14:35while Maini
14:36was running
14:37so Montoya
14:38had already
14:39had that contact.
14:40Whether Maini
14:41was ahead of it

14:42is yet to be seen

15:34one of the F3
15:35drivers go off

15:44at the same time
15:45just being
15:45in different parts
15:46of the lap.
15:47So I think
15:47given the angulation
15:49of the front left
15:49tyre there
15:50Maini will take
15:50no further apart
15:51in the session
15:52he's lost the engine
15:53anyway but he's
15:53being noted
15:54as the sole cause
15:55of that red flag.
15:57Why is that important?
15:58Because it absolves
15:59Sebastian Montoya
16:01as being the cause
16:02of the red flag.
16:03Of course in Formula 2
16:04drivers can lose
16:06their lap time
16:07for being the sole cause
16:08of the red flag.
16:09That being said
16:09I'm not sure
16:10they're going to be able
16:11to fix that
16:11for Montoya
16:13that looks relatively
16:14terminal and to be honest
16:15I'd be on the phone
16:16to him saying
16:17park that up
16:18because you never know
16:19what damage you can do
16:20with the car slewing
16:21sideways down the
16:22racetrack like that.
16:23Yeah indeed
16:24so we didn't really
16:27get any competitive
16:29lap times on the board
16:30drivers were just
16:31getting themselves
16:32prepared for the first
16:33real flying laps
16:34and that is what
16:35we were on board
16:36with with Cushmine
16:37at the time
16:38so you can see
16:40the clock is stopped
16:42at just under 24 minutes
16:45Cushmine climbs out
16:46of the car
16:46he's all okay
16:47but particularly
16:49after the pace
16:49he displayed

16:51in that practice

16:53he'll feel
16:53very disappointed

16:55we've said it
