00:30It gives you the opportunity for explosive plays, but also opens you up for holding calls, negative plays, and that's
00:36where they want to stay away from.
00:37So they transition to this more big double-team, vertical run game up front that they're running this year and
00:43last year.
00:43They've been bottled up so far after historically great numbers last year.
00:48That's going to help.
00:49It was only a matter of time before Nakua could shake himself free for his third catch of the day.
00:56And now you see this play action, you see this play action offense right here.
01:01It's just a one-on-one matchup with Puka Nakua and D'Amador Lenore.
01:05D'Amador Lenore is playing outside of Puka Nakua, so the in-cut for Puka is wide open.
01:10Good timing, good opportunity for Stafford to step up and deliver a good ball to Puka Nakua there.
01:32That's the right guard, Kevin Dotson.
01:35They just get a little bit excited right here.
01:38Hard count by Stafford.
01:39We can hear it all the way up here in the booth, and he goes just a little bit too
01:43early there.
01:44But they really trust Stafford in the red zone right here.
01:47Nobody throws it more than him.
01:48Nobody's had a better ratio.
01:5033 touchdown passes, two interceptions in the red zone last year.
01:53He's really good down here, and you see some boot plays.
01:56You see some screens, and you still see that run game.
02:00Devontae Adams still without a catch so far today.
02:05Looking forward, and it is Adams right up the middle to the 11th.
02:10Oh, you're right on the mark there.
02:11Thank you.
02:12Absolutely.
02:13And sometimes, you know, blind scroll.
02:15What's that?
02:16Blind scroll, find some nut.
02:17Every once in a while.
02:18Hey, but, you know, it's interesting now, you talk about play action now for the Rams down here in the
02:23red zone.
02:23It's not vertical as much.
02:25Now it's going to be that hard, wide zone.
02:27Get everybody moving one way.
02:29Boot Stafford out the other way, and that ball wants to end up in the flat quickly.
02:35This is their eighth play of this drive, which is the most plays they've had on any drive so far
02:40today.
02:42That's a handoff on second and two.
02:44Williams right up the middle.
02:45Looks like he's got enough for the first down to set up first and goal.
02:52Again, these running backs do such a great job of keeping their shoulders square.
02:55And this run game that they have is designed for these running backs to check every gap is available for
03:02them.
03:02They just get to pick the one that looks the best to them.
03:05And when you stay as square as Kyron Williams and Blake Quorum do, every one of those gaps is wide
03:09open, and it puts a ton of stress on this defense for San Francisco.
03:15Ferguson, Parkinson, Higby, the three tight ends.
03:19Williams in there.
03:20Nikula in there.
03:21First and goal for the Rams.
03:25Take it to Williams.
03:27Deliver.
03:28Parkinson puts the head down and gets it to the two-yard line out of bounds.
03:32Lenore was the one to stop him in his tracks.
03:36All right, Noah.
03:36Now we get in this situation right here.
03:38If you see 17 walk out on the field, that's Devontae Adams.
03:41They line up on the left side, and he lines up on the left side of the formation.
03:45Antennas got to go up big time if you're the San Francisco 49ers defensive.
03:49Antennas have fade balls, quit games, some find a way to get him open.
03:53But it looks like right now they're going to keep him on the sideline.
03:57They're going to stick with that 13 personnel.
04:00The three tight ends in there.
04:01Williams has the touchdown already for the Rams.
04:03Looking for a second.
04:04He's not going to get it.
04:05He got swarmed by Fred Warner and Jaden Duggan.
04:11I mean, this is why you play linebacker right here, Noah.
04:14Like, Fred Warner sees it.
04:16Go get it.
04:16Play physical.
04:17They always teach you to tackle high.
04:19When you're at this area in the field, you tackle low.
04:21These guys fall forward.
04:22It's a touchdown.
04:23Great job of Fred Warner staying high, being physical up top.
04:26And, Noah, Devontae Adams just trots into the huddle here.
04:2914 touchdowns last year for Devontae Adams.
04:32Led the NFL.
04:33He's got 117 for his career.
04:41Number seven all-time in receiving touchdowns.
04:44And they have another one here.
04:45Instead, it's Nakura going down low.
04:48And he made the catch, but they're saying he's just short of the goal line.
04:53Fourth down.
04:57And this is go.
04:58This is go territory all day.
05:03Stafford throws this ball.
05:04He catches it.
05:05His knees down.
05:06The ball is short.
05:07Yes.
05:08Fourth down right here.
05:09The trot Higby.
05:10The trot Ferguson on the field.
05:12This is big physical football right here.
05:15Adams coming off the field.
05:17So, Parkinson, Ferguson, and Higby are the three tight ends.
05:23And Williams is the back.
05:27Stafford's a ten of the set.
05:29Squeezing through.
05:30Matthew Stafford.
05:34No signal yet.
05:39Niners are trying to say that they got the stop.
05:42And they did.
05:43What a stand from San Francisco.
05:52Fred Warner once again leading the way.
05:54And the Niners plug up the hole in time.
05:58Keion White dragging him back.
06:01Drake Greenlaw in the middle of humanity.
06:03And San Fran denies him.
06:07They reviewed it on the field.
06:08Call stands.
06:09A stop for the Niners.
06:11Yeah, and it was ruled a stop on the field.
06:13So, when they go to review it, you've got to figure out where Stafford is.
06:15And there's just, there's no way to see where he is in there.
06:18It's just people crammed in there.
06:20You can see his, you can see his helmet right there.
06:22That's Stafford.
06:23But you can't see where the ball is.
06:24And it doesn't look like he ever gets crossed, crossed, crossed the goal line there.
06:28And great job.
06:29Grayson Holt and Osa Adigizua.
06:31And Fred Warner there at the point of attack.
06:33And that's a rookie.
06:34That's all the way down here in Australia for his first game.
06:36Makes a big play for this team near the goal line.
06:39You know, you said it, that guys like Grayson Holt and James Thompson Jr., they make this
06:43long trip.
06:44There's not a huge expectation that they're going to serve a massive role in this week one
06:48NFC West showdown.
06:49But Alfred Collins goes down in practice earlier in the week.
06:52They get thrust into this role.
06:54And now Stafford was 0 for 2 on QB sneaks last season.
06:570 for 1 on the fourth and goal from inside the one yard line.
07:02Now let's see what this Rams defensive front can do with the Niners back all the way up.
07:06All right.
07:07Something to think about right here.
07:08If you're Nate Landman in this defense, hard counts are going to show up big right here.
07:12This is a cheap, easy way to get five yards coming out of your goal line.
07:15So in that huddle right there, you're Nate Landman.
07:18You're saying, hey, watch the hard count.
07:19See the ball.
07:20Then we can go.
07:22McCaffrey is the back.
07:23First down from inside the one.
07:25He's going to try to push the pile.
07:27And the flag is down.
07:29He didn't get very far.
07:31If at all.
07:38Offense.
07:40That penalty's declined.
07:42Second down.
07:43And probably the smart move from Sean McVada to decline the penalty.
07:46It's going to be second and ten from that same spot as opposed to first and ten all over again.
07:51You accept that penalty.
07:52It's like a six-inch penalty.
07:54It doesn't help you a whole lot.
07:55So obviously, 100% right now, you want to decline that again.
07:57This, the hard counts, hard counts sure back up again here.
08:01So just be very conscious of that if you're the Rams.
08:03And the Niners will be conscious of that man, Miles Garrett.
08:07Purdy's going to look to throw it.
08:09Good protection.
08:10And it's wide open for Ferrell.
08:12His second catch is a first down.
08:1914 yards on that catch and run and provides all the breathing room necessary.
08:23Purdy's up to 170 with the two touchdowns.
08:25And absolutely.
08:26Yeah, you always try to talk about it.
08:28That situation on the field, that first first down is huge, right?
08:31You get stuck.
08:32You get to kick the ball from the shadow of your end zone.
08:33You don't get full depth from the punter, but a good job spitting that ball out in the flat
08:37and giving themselves a little bit of breathing room.
08:42After that early interception in the first half, Purdy has been nearly perfect.
08:47Stafford only 121.
08:49No touchdowns and the pick.
08:5114, watch out!
08:53Tough.
08:54McAfford.
08:56Pushing McAfford, sticking on his feet.
08:58And taking it to the 24.
09:02Yeah, just some tough, gritty yards from Christian right here.
09:06You get him going on the perimeter.
09:07You get his good buddy, Kyle Huszczyk, in front of him.
09:10Watch Huszczyk get out in front, pick up support.
09:12Christian pumps it inside, breaks a tackle, spins, falls forward for a first down.
09:17And this is the Christian that we're used to seeing.
09:20Healthy, great offseason, explosive.
09:22But the one thing that he has, he's always been explosive with the power that he's generated
09:26as his career has gone on, but it's what's separated him.
09:30He's got 40 of his 57 yards so far in this third quarter.
09:33With two minutes to play.
09:35Black back on the field for this second and short.
09:38Split him out.
09:41Curley steps up, delivers.
09:43Samuel.
09:44Terry outside and across the 35.
09:47He beat Lake towards that sideline.
09:50And another first down catch of 13 yards.
09:53You think Kyle Shanahan's happy to have Debo Samuel back?
09:55All they've got to do is they put him in the slot.
09:57They get a matchup on Quentin Lake.
09:59And it's, again, it's just an option route.
10:01Brock Purdy sees space to the flat.
10:04Debo comes up, runs a great route.
10:06Puts his foot in the ground, breaks out.
10:07And Brock Purdy puts it right on him there for a first down.
10:10And Purdy showing exactly why he makes so much sense.
10:13He fits with a Kyle Shanahan offense.
10:16He has distributed the football.
10:18Eight different receivers, 22 of 31, 84.
10:22Now they'll pitch it back on the ground with Black.
10:24First throw.
10:25Kalon Black just across midfield and out of bounds.
10:30Purdy in complete control.
10:32And the running game now starting to become effective for Kyle Shanahan.
10:35Absolutely.
10:36And this quick passing game is what sets it all up.
10:38And you look at these two guys.
10:39They got the lead blocker and Kittle off to our right.
10:42Debo Samuel cracks.
10:44Miles Garrett right there.
10:45And then a big running lane right there for Kalon Black.
10:48And another way to slow down pass rushers.
10:51Crack them on the edge.
10:52And to do that with Debo Samuel.
10:55Already four different players going to touch on this drive.
10:57Black, McCaffrey, along with Farrell and Samuel.
11:01This time Black gets stopped right at the line of scrimmage.
11:06And you talk a lot about, you know,
11:08ball handling from the quarterback to the running back.
11:10No, and there's a lot of ways to think about it.
11:12That was essentially a stretch play.
11:14So either Brock can run all the way out there and stretch that ball
11:16and hand it off to him.
11:18Or he can toss that ball to Kalon Black.
11:20The ball gets in his hands faster.
11:22And he can get to where he wants to faster.
11:24He doesn't have to wait on Brock Purdy to get all the way out there.
11:26Obviously, not a huge gain there on first down.
11:28But that's the idea behind the ball handling.
11:30And Kyle Shanahan get in their hands fast and let him go play.
11:33Maybe the final play of this third quarter.
11:40Party team, watch out!
11:43Purdy on second and ten.
11:44Feeling the rush.
11:45Stepping up.
11:46And Purdy's going to tuck and run.
11:48Major first down yardage all the way to a 30.
11:52He's already dancing down under.
11:54Purdy ends the third with a little swag.
11:57And the Niners feeling in complete control after three.
12:01The third quarter belongs to San Francisco.
12:04Extending the lead 17-7.
12:07As you're watching NFL Kickoff.
12:09Presented by NFL Sunday Ticket.
12:15Today here in Australia marks 25 years since the September 11th terrorist attacks.
12:20In remembrance of the lives lost and all who helped in the healing and recovery of our nation,
12:25we honor the United States and Australia military families from the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors
12:31who are here to honor their fallen heroes.
12:3917-7.
12:41We see the unity back at the G in Australia.
12:4649ers with a highly productive third quarter.
12:49After 67 rushing yards in the first half, they had 76 in the third quarter alone.
12:54Plus the touchdown from Purdy to Mike Evans.
12:57And now they're trying to cap off a drive that started inside their own one-yard line.
13:01To Debo Samuel.
13:03And he ran right into Josiah Stewart.
13:05Ricocheted backwards at the 25-yard line.
13:08And here's something to think about if you're Kyle Shanahan, right?
13:10A field goal makes it a 13-point game, right?
13:14So could this be four-down territory for them?
13:17They could go field goal.
13:18It's a two-score game still.
13:20If they go score a touchdown, it helps them out drastically.
13:23So if you're Kyle Shanahan right here, you're starting to think about,
13:26hey, do I get a couple more downs here?
13:28Do I go four-down territory?
13:30And I think that's got to be where his mind's at at this point.
13:34San Francisco.
13:37Feeling rhythmic.
13:39They've been here for over a week.
13:42In Australia, as Purdy pumps.
13:44They run again.
13:46As he directs traffic, another first-down carry for Purdy.
13:51There's nothing more frustrating, Noah, than quarterbacks that scramble.
13:55So you look how this game's gone and the protection plan that they've had
13:58from the Niners on this L.A. Rams team.
14:00Quick game.
14:01Screens.
14:01Get the ball out.
14:02Second half.
14:03They just throw a screen to Debo right there.
14:05And then Brock Purdy's legs are starting to show up
14:07as Miles Garrett trots off the field right here.
14:09But the legs of Purdy, the screen game, the job this front,
14:13this offensive line is done for this Niners team
14:16has been really good so far.
14:18Remember, they're playing without Dajon Stribling
14:21and Jake Tom just both went out with injury in the first half.
14:24On the toss, McCaffrey will get it to the 15-yard line
14:29on a short game for Josiah Stewart.
14:32Adds another tackle.
14:33Again, there was such a storyline this week.
14:3649ers coming in early, spending the time,
14:38finishing up their preparation here in Australia
14:40versus the Rams, who came in essentially
14:42as if it was a normal road trip.
14:44Landed yesterday morning, went through their normal routine,
14:47woke up early this morning, and prepared this game
14:50as if it was on Pacific time.
14:51And absolutely, they did it.
14:52They did it last year.
14:53They went to London and played Jacksonville
14:55and had a ton of success.
14:56But we went to practice the other day
14:58and watching these Niners after they were acclimated,
15:00they looked fresh, they looked energized,
15:02and it's shown today.
15:05Second and eight.
15:06Cody.
15:31And you talk about the ability to extend plays
15:34in Brock Purdy.
15:35You can watch Colton McKivitts, the right tackle,
15:37get everything funneled back inside.
15:38Purdy doesn't like what he has.
15:40Scrambles to his right, and this is something
15:42that him and Debo Samuel did a long time
15:44in his first stint here in San Francisco.
15:47His scramble find open space,
15:49and Brock puts it right on for a touchdown.
15:5324-7.
15:55It's the first 99-yard drive
15:58for the San Francisco 49ers
15:59since week two of the 2024 season in Minneapolis.
16:04Purdy with his third touchdown of the day,
16:08and Debo is officially back as a Niner.
16:11McVay searching for answers down under.
16:17Welcome back to NFL Kickoff, presented by NFL Sunday Ticket.
16:22Good to know, Neil Diamond transcends continents.
16:25Over 100,000 jamming out to Sweet Caroline.
16:39I also did get a little concerned
16:41because I saw Keefley's eyes get wide
16:43when he saw those two dudes take their shirts off.
16:46You've got to keep the jacket on in the booth.
16:50Whittington just took another shot.
16:51The Rams just trying to find a way
16:55to sidestep all this energy the Niners have right now
16:57in all three phases of the game.
16:59The energy certainly is there for the Niners.
17:01That's Garrett Wallow coming down there.
17:03Big physical tackle on the special team side,
17:06and, you know, this is going to be interesting.
17:08This is why Matthew Stafford was brought over to the Rams
17:13in 2021 is they need a guy that can play from the gun,
17:16and in the event that they get behind,
17:17can we feel more comfortable with a guy playing from the gun?
17:20And that's exactly what you're going to get right here.
17:22Somebody who has led countless iconic game-winning drives,
17:27countless iconic comeback moments
17:28as Devontae Adams has the catch, but not for much.
17:31Maybe a gain of two on first down.
17:34And this is where Matthew Stafford was excellent last year.
17:37His fourth-quarter passer rating was best in the NFL,
17:39and they're going to go a little hurry-up right here,
17:41but at this point in the game,
17:43he knows what he's getting on defense,
17:44and now he's got to go execute.
17:47Second down.
17:48Stafford out of the pocket.
17:50On the run to Parkinson.
17:51And he will serve forward with a five-down back in the backfield.
17:55Greenlaw and Warner sandwiched there,
17:57and we'll wait to see what the penalty is.
18:00Looks like a chop block on the offense.
18:03Sean McVay looks a little frustrated here.
18:06First of all, chop block.
18:09Offense number 77.
18:10Half the distance of the goal.
18:12Second down.
18:13Alaric Jackson.
18:14Yeah, on Alaric Jackson.
18:15So, can't be engaged and go block somebody high and low.
18:22So, sometimes that happens when you're getting running backs that want to go chip.
18:26So, right here, he's engaged.
18:28He's engaged with Alaric Jackson.
18:31And then Kyron Williams comes and hits him a little bit low.
18:34I'm not quite sure if I agree with that call right here.
18:36He didn't go low on him.
18:37He was engaged.
18:39And I think they might have missed one right there.
18:42Yeah, so, Terry McCauley, it seems, agrees with us.
18:45Terry, I want to hear your voice.
18:48Yeah, it looks exactly right.
18:50It's not a chop block.
18:51The low block was actually above the waist.
18:54So, at the waist.
18:56It shouldn't have been a foul.
18:57And so, the Rams now playing from behind in several ways.
19:01Second down and 20 is not going to go very far.
19:04As Kyron Williams will just get it to the 15-yard line.
19:08It's third and long.
19:09Fred Warner making his presence felt in his return.
19:11He did say that he was physically capable of returning at the end of the year.
19:15Had his practice window open for the playoff last season.
19:18But just didn't feel comfortable enough to play through it and feel good about his future.
19:23Stafford, third and long.
19:25And it's knocked away.
19:26When a flag comes in, Renardo Green had the coverage on Nakua.
19:32Man, this is going against San Francisco.
19:36Passers, defense through with zero.
19:38Ball's placed in the spot with all automatic first down.
19:43See the top end of this route.
19:44Watch Renardo Green's right hand right there.
19:47That's where, in my opinion, that penalty comes.
19:49Because at the point of catch, he's okay.
19:51But what that referee sees is that right hand on Pupa's hip.
19:56And when he impedes progress a little bit, that's when that flag comes in.
20:01So Nakua gets the benefit of the doubt.
20:03And it does keep this drive moving after what looked like a third and long incompletion.
20:09So now Stafford looking to deal again.
20:11And this time he does find an open man.
20:13And it is Tyler Higbee to the 39-yard line with a gain of eight.
20:19Okay, so now we're seeing Fred Warner up at the line of scrimmage a lot.
20:22What that's doing is influencing protection.
20:25So he's off right now.
20:27But when he's on the line of scrimmage, they have to account for him.
20:31Stafford, Diaz, Higbee, back-to-back catches to move the sticks.
20:36And that effect for the football in the end.
20:39Higbee thought it was down.
20:41And it's turning on his ball.
20:44The immediate shift of momentum back to San Francisco.
20:48And it's Dre Greenlaw right here and Fred Warner.
20:51Both those guys are attacking that football, punching at it.
20:54We'll see who ends up with it.
20:55Keon White ends up with that football.
20:58But these two linebackers, Dre Greenlaw and Fred Warner, attack that football at any moment they can get.
21:04And they got one out right there.
21:09Different swagger.
21:10Different energy.
21:11With a healthy Fred Warner and the return of Dre Greenlaw.
21:15These backers making an immediate impact.
21:18And there's the punch-out from Warner.
21:21And Fred's been phenomenal at that.
21:23Him and Dre Greenlaw, like we talked about.
21:25Noah, you brought this up.
21:26They feed off of each other.
21:28And that's what Kyle Shanahan said.
21:29Those two guys are so good together.
21:31And it's like Keon White comes away with that football.
21:34And a lot of excitement and smile right there.
21:41Nine tackles, a pass breakup, and a forced fumble for Warner in his return.
21:49Netflix is expanding its NFL coverage in 2026 from week one to the first ever Thanksgiving Eve game.
21:56Two Christmas Day games and a game in week 18.
21:59Watch the next NFL Netflix game day matchup.
22:01This Thanksgiving Eve, the Packers take on this Los Angeles Rams team.
22:06Live on Netflix Wednesday, November 25th at 8 Eastern.
22:10Cody back to his operation.
22:12205 yards, three touchdowns, the one interception.
22:15Kalon Black with another carry.
22:17Gets it across the 40-yard line as we check in with Tom.
22:20Miles Garrett not in the game as this drive begins.
22:23He's been subbing in and out throughout.
22:24And every time that he leaves the field, he really seems gassed.
22:28Remember, he barely practiced in training camp because of what the team has called a knee injury.
22:33He told us it's lower leg stuff.
22:35And admitted, it is still causing him some pain.
22:37He's got those zero sacks or QB hits so far today.
22:40He only had two games all of last season without a sack or a QB hit.
22:44That was games five and six, weeks five and six against Minnesota and Pittsburgh.
22:4834 dropbacks, only pressured four times for Brock Purdy.
22:52Relatively clean pocket for him as he tosses it back to Black.
22:56And he gets tripped up immediately by Turner.
23:00And Noah, this feels like a huge third down right here.
23:03They get the first set here.
23:04They can burn more clock off during field goal range, obviously.
23:07But the Rams need a stop right here.
23:10This is a great opportunity for him to do it right here.
23:13Sit in that coverage that Chris Shurwell likes running.
23:15And let these big guys go rush.
23:17Miles Garrett is back on the field.
23:19Byron Young, Braden Fisk.
23:20These are the guys that need to go and rush.
23:2623 sacks last season for Garrett.
23:28Set a new record.
23:30Can he find one here?
23:31Purdy gets rid of it.
23:32And it's nicked away.
23:33Nice play by Quentin Lake.
23:35It's a fourth, fourth down.
23:40And that's the play they needed right there.
23:43They get the matchup they want.
23:44They like this right here.
23:45Brock Purdy.
23:47Clean look at that.
23:48And Quentin Lake, just a great play with Christian McCaffrey on this option route.
23:52Really good job of Quentin Lake getting to McCaffrey, getting in phase.
23:56And at the last moment, extending that left hand to knock that ball down.
24:01So Pinero will come out for a 56-yard attempt.
24:05John Leach, the snapper.
24:06Corliss Waitman, the holder.
24:12Pinero, low kick.
24:16It's good.
24:17It's good.
24:2020-point San Francisco lead.
24:24They have scored 24 straight.
24:56Perfect operation.
24:57Corrie, sunshine, and the Rams hoping that they can heat up their offense.
25:01It's a lot of stage of comeback in week one.
25:05It's an offense that has been pretty anemic for most of the day.
25:08And you look at the first half right here, uncharacteristic interception by Matthew Stafford.
25:14They obviously don't convert here on fourth down near the goal line.
25:17Had a good drive going.
25:18And then right here, Fred Warner, Drenger, Greenlaw.
25:21Pop this ball out from Tyler Higbee.
25:23You just look at McVeigh and Stafford.
25:25This isn't an area that they're used to being in with how explosive they were on the offensive side of
25:29the ball last year.
25:30Yeah, seven points now, 30 last year.
25:33Only two plays of 15 or more yards so far today as Williams gets shoved back by Lenore.
25:42Nine and a half and counting for this Rams offense.
25:45Yeah, you look at these coaching staffs.
25:46Raheem Morris and Sean McVeigh go way back.
25:49Obviously, they got started together back in 2012 on Mike Shanahan's staff in Washington.
25:53You fast forward, they were together.
25:55He was a defensive coordinator for a couple years with Sean McVeigh, and now he's back playing against him.
26:00So the connections are certainly there.
26:02Second down and six.
26:04Stafford airs it out.
26:05And it's a first down catch for Devontae Adams.
26:09And I think this is the luxury that Matthew Stafford gives you, being comfortable, playing from the gun.
26:16And that's where he likes to be.
26:17That's obviously where he started his career in Detroit, was playing from the gun.
26:20And this is where he feels comfortable, and this is not out of their comfort zone.
26:27Stafford dials it up.
26:29Into coverage and incomplete.
26:32Nakua in a crowd.
26:35Only four catches so far for Puka Nakua.
26:37And it's second down.
26:40Again, they're trying to get him running these deep in cuts.
26:43Now he's matched up on Jack Jones right here.
26:46The top end of the route.
26:47Watch Jack Jones anticipate.
26:48He knows it's going to be an in cut.
26:50He's running the route for Puka Nakua.
26:52And a great job of keeping his hands off and playing that football.
26:59They've got the wave rocking at the G.
27:02A whole lot of red in the crowd.
27:04Excited from what they've seen.
27:06Second and ten.
27:07And a little too far in front of Adams.
27:12All right, Noah.
27:14Raheem Morris is super creative on third down.
27:17And now it becomes, do I sit back and let these rushers, some of these young guys go?
27:22Or do I send pressure?
27:24I wouldn't be surprised to see Drake Greenlaw and Fred Warner up around the line of scrimmage.
27:28See if they can influence protection.
27:30And then get out and zone.
27:31But the two guys you've got to keep an eye on.
27:33And Puka Nakua, Devontae Adams on the same side of the field.
27:43Quick one.
27:44Nakua with blocking.
27:45And he gets chipped off right past midfield.
27:48Game six.
27:49Fourth down and four incoming.
27:51And if you're going to throw a screen on third down like that, Sean McVay already knows he's going for
27:56it on fourth down right here.
27:57He goes right to that card.
27:58All he wanted to do was get half and get back.
28:01And now it's fourth and about five.
28:04And that whole play looks wide open for him.
28:14Rams were 20 of 30 on fourth down last year.
28:17Tied for fifth best in the NFL.
28:20Fourth and four.
28:21Stafford shot.
28:22Ferguson the intended target.
28:24And incomplete.
28:25D'Amador Lenore blanketing him down the field.
28:30And a turnover on downs.
28:33San Francisco pushing all the right buttons.
28:37A beautiful performance in a beautiful city abroad.
28:44Pay attention, young man, or you'll be nabbed.
28:47Goodness gracious me.
28:49One little man over another.
28:51What about that for an Anzac Day?
28:53Spectacular.
28:54What a footballer.
28:56That is absolutely unbelievable.
28:59The guy has turned the game on his own boots.
29:05That's the type of football they're accustomed to seeing here at the G.
29:08They will have the Australian Football League Grand Final in 15 days right back here at the cricket ground.
29:15As McCaffrey has the first down, Carroll spinning his way for eight yards.
29:21Matthew Stafford's Rams offenses have been potent since he got here in 2021.
29:26Previous 84 starts, he's been held under 10 points just once.
29:29That was 20-22 at the San Francisco 49ers.
29:33And Raheem Morris and his defense have done a good job of switching looks up specifically on third down.
29:38Sometimes it's five, six guys on the line of scrimmage and play zone.
29:41Sometimes it's five, six guys on the line of scrimmage and play man.
29:44And then sometimes they just drop everybody and rush forwards.
29:47Done a good job of keeping them off balance.
29:52Right around, it's up.
29:55Back to McCaffrey.
29:57And he gets pushed back.
30:00It looked like just short of that line of games.
30:04Just short, so you'd imagine right here.
30:07Keep this ball on the ground.
30:08They want to keep this clock moving.
30:10So, one game with Christian McCaffrey.
30:12And then can we get Brock Purdy on the perimeter?
30:15That gives him the opportunity to do easy throws with nothing in his face.
30:19Or he can use his legs to get the first down here.
30:25Purdy, 24 completions to eight different receivers.
30:29Evans leading the way.
30:30Six catches for 49 and a touchdown.
30:32Samuel, six catches for 48 and the score.
30:35This time Purdy will take it himself.
30:36And he's got just enough at the 40 to move it.
30:40And then if you're the Niners and you're on the offensive side of the ball here,
30:43anybody with the ball in their hands,
30:45as we tick closer to five minutes,
30:47if you run out of bounds under five minutes, that clock stops.
30:51So, as we creep closer to it,
30:53all these Niners players with the ball in their hands
30:57stay in bounds, keep that clock running.
31:01Kyle Shanahan was just so thrilled with the training camp that Brock Purdy had
31:06coming into the season.
31:07Thought it was the best training camp that he's had
31:10since joining the Niners.
31:11And Purdy echoed their sentiments.
31:13And they were hard on him.
31:14He was hard on himself about getting back to those rookie mechanics.
31:18The pitch for Kalon Black.
31:20He runs into a bear hug for Kobe Turner
31:21after a pickup of two.
31:24But Purdy, he said that it's natural.
31:27There's just the human nature that comes with having some level of success.
31:31Saying, okay, cool.
31:32I'm good.
31:33I'm just going to keep getting better naturally by playing.
31:35And he felt that he got lazy in some of his mechanics.
31:38His footwork, his eye discipline.
31:39Shanahan really felt the same way.
31:41Yeah, and you're at 26 years old to have the ability
31:44and the maturity to say, hey, last year, you know, I played well.
31:47We won 12 games, but how can I get better?
31:49And he flipped, like you said, that rookie tape on
31:51and saw a guy with more urgency and better footwork and better eyes
31:54and he's gotten back to it.
31:56You can see the results so far.
31:58205 yards, three touchdowns.
32:01Faked the pitch.
32:03Ended up handing it off for Black.
32:05And he will take it across the 35-yard line
32:07before running into the chest of Dolock.
32:11And then another first down right here.
32:14Just shaves more time off the clock for that Rams offense.
32:17Every first down is going to peel off.
32:20You know, almost two minutes o'clock,
32:22so it's imperative that they start getting this stop right here.
32:25They need it right here, right now,
32:26to get that ball back to that Rams offense.
32:29This is a Sean McVay-led team
32:31that has so much expectation this season.
32:34The heavy preseason favorite
32:36coming into this season to win the Super Bowl.
32:39He's talked a lot to them about managing those expectations,
32:42but having courage in doing so along the way.
32:45On third and four, Cody outside.
32:48McCaffrey.
32:49Can he get there?
32:50Turned up.
32:51Got dragged down by Josiah Stewart.
32:55Yeah, good job by Christian right here.
32:57No, he wasn't able to get that first down.
32:59Smartly stays in bounds right there
33:01and keeps that clock rolling.
33:04Meanwhile, there is an injured Ram.
33:06Slow to get up,
33:07and that is not the guy you want to see down.
33:09Nate Landman last year,
33:10the leading tackler with 132 of them,
33:13and he's going to take his time making his way back to the L.A. sideline.
33:19Looks like a little grimace and pain right there.
33:22You can see it on his face,
33:23and looks like he's got that left hand bandaged up pretty good
33:26as he comes over right here.
33:29Oh, that right hand just hits right on to Christian McCaffrey's helmet.
33:35We'll check on Landman.
33:37We'll be back in Australia.
33:40Welcome back to NFL Kickoff,
33:42presented by NFL Sunday Ticket.
33:4627-7, 4-0-3 to play.
33:48It's a fourth down and four
33:50for the San Francisco 49ers offense,
33:52and right now that offense is staying out on the field.
34:01Miles Garrett is on the field for this fourth down.
34:05We'll see if San Francisco actually runs the play.
34:20And the hard count does not work against this Rams defense,
34:24so Kyle Shanahan is going to take his second time out.
34:31You'd have to imagine they're going to try Eddie Pinero out there for a field goal.
34:36That would extend this to a 23-point game.
34:40You see that quick math I just did in my head?
34:42That's pretty good.
34:43Isn't that impressive?
34:44Yeah, I had to look over at my board right here
34:45and see what it was going to be.
34:47So 27-20.
34:4827-7, you had three.
34:50Now, 23.
34:51Took me a second to get there.
34:52I like your process.
34:53That was like showing it on scrap paper.
34:56There's a lot of scrap paper in front of us right now.
34:58Yeah, that's a real good point.
35:00Meanwhile, you see these two coaches.
35:01They have been so tied to one another from their days, both in Washington.
35:07Obviously, that coaching tree that we've seen for both of them
35:10has been stuff that has been, one, legendary, but, two,
35:13talked about for many years.
35:15But there is this chess match between the two of them.
35:18They are rivals.
35:19They have respect.
35:20But they certainly want to beat one another as Pinero hits the upright.
35:24And it curls off.
35:26No good.
35:26It would have been his third make from 50-plus, or at least a second today.
35:34But this one does miss from 52.
35:39Snap hold looked good.
35:41And that ball just kind of tailed to the right on him.
35:44But there's, this is, this is what the Rams needed.
35:47That, that game goes to 23-0.
35:49It kind of gets pushed out of reach.
35:50But right here, they've got an opportunity.
35:52Great field position to push this ball down the field.
35:55Still three timeouts left in the two-minute warning.
35:58But they need to push this ball down the field to have a chance to get back into it.
36:02That gets a line quick, starting this drive from the 42.
36:07And a handoff for Coram.
36:10And Stetson Bennett, by the way, was the quarterback that was under center.
36:14So Matthew Stafford is now out of this game.
36:1715 of 25, 155 yards, and the interception.
36:21And it feels like Los Angeles is, to a certain degree,
36:24waving the white flag after the long trip.
36:27Yeah, Stafford's on the sidelines, got his helmet on,
36:30walking around, looking like he's okay.
36:31But, so Stetson Bennett will have an opportunity
36:36to record his first NFL real stats here as he runs this.
36:41But a flag is down in the secondary, back at the 28-yard line.
36:46They got, there's, there's three of them down there.
36:48No, they got, they all saw it.
36:5012 players' defense.
36:52That penalty's declined.
36:54The result of the play's the first down.
36:56So Bennett will have his first first down carry of his career.
36:59Now in his third year out of Georgia, two-time national champion in college.
37:04This quarterback room, that includes Stafford Bennett,
37:06but now the rookie out of Alabama, Ty Simpson.
37:1013th overall pick.
37:13As the delayed handoff goes to Ronnie Rivers,
37:16and surging forward across the 40-yard line as we check in with Tom.
37:20And he said he was not dealing with an injury, guys.
37:22He has no medical personnel around him.
37:24This is strictly a coach's decision to go to Stetson Bennett.
37:27Meanwhile, he saw Nate Landman headed to the locker room.
37:30He has a shoulder injury and is doubtful.
37:32All right, Tom, appreciate it.
37:34The one thing for Sean McVay that he was excited about in the back half of this,
37:37and staying in their circadian rhythm in the Pacific time clock,
37:41because that one was a little high from Mumfield and incomplete,
37:44is that back in week two game isn't until September 21st at home against the Giants.
37:51Meanwhile, Mumfield is shaken up after the play.
37:54Took a hit on that sandwich.
37:55Going for that high ball.
37:58Yeah, and you know, this is frustrating for the Rams,
38:01which you've got to be excited for what Kyle Shanahan and Raheem Morris have done.
38:04You get all your guys back, and you've got impacts from everybody.
38:08You know, you start the second half off with Debo Samuel on the big kick return,
38:11and I'm sure they're happy to have him back,
38:13but they've got action from everybody.
38:16Christian McCaffrey, Demarcus Robinson, Mike Evans,
38:20Fred Warner, and Dre Greenlaw played great.
38:22Nick Boso is active in the run game,
38:24so it's got to be such a breath of fresh air for these guys to get,
38:27number one, people healthy, but then those guys played well, too.
38:31Meanwhile, Luke, you see what happened here.
38:33You said that they had three timeouts,
38:34and sure, it wasn't a ton of time to make this comeback,
38:37but are you surprised at all that they put Stetson Bennett in the game?
38:39Yeah, I'm a little bit surprised with three timeouts,
38:42and, you know, the capabilities that they have on the offensive side of the ball.
38:45I thought they'd give them one more run.
38:49Rivers up the gut, and they'll get close to set up.
38:53Fourth and short.
38:56You've got to imagine they take this down to the two-minute warning,
38:58and then a couple more passes, and this game ends.
39:02You know, I'm a little bit surprised that they didn't give it one more go, but.
39:09Here we are.
39:10Get your remote controllers ready.
39:12After the break, we'll show you how you can vote for today's player of the game.
39:19Well, the Rams may have called uncle, but you can't tell the fans in the stand that.
39:24We want you to weigh in on who you think the player of the game should be.
39:28And so, if you are watching live on Netflix right now, it's time for you to weigh in.
39:33Should it be Brock Purdy?
39:35Should it be Mike Evans getting his first touchdown as a Niner?
39:39Should it be Deebo Samuel getting his first touchdown in over 600 days,
39:43or is it the Niners' defense?
39:44Weigh in right now.
39:45We'll see you postgame, but we're going to be very serious about our analysis.
39:49Oh, my God.
39:50How do we get one of those?
39:51Those look awesome.
39:52I don't think I've ever seen these three guys look better.
39:55My goodness.
39:57Urban's happy.
39:57You think he's going to take that thing home with him?
39:59Absolutely.
39:59I don't think there's even a question about it.
40:03He's going to show up, maybe give a good day, mate.
40:06We heard that that's an important greeting here.
40:08Meanwhile, it is a fourth down and two.
40:11Hand off.
40:12Rivers is going to get the first down,
40:14and Noah tried to stop him,
40:16but Rivers dragged him with him for an extra few.
40:19So Matthew Stafford, one of two players last year
40:23with a touchdown pass in every game,
40:25along with the man that was traded for him, Jared Goff.
40:28Today, no touchdowns, the one interception,
40:3015 completions, only found six receivers.
40:33And Nakua and Adams combined for just eight catches
40:37and 100 yards between the two of them.
40:43And going back to what Sean McVay was saying
40:45about the expectations as Bennett deals,
40:47and over the middle, Whittington will have the catch
40:50across the 25-yard line.
40:52But McVay said that he actually thought back to the last dance.
40:56There was something that,
40:57a moment in that Michael Jordan documentary,
41:00there was a reporter saying that Michael Jordan's greatest gift
41:02was that he was totally and completely present.
41:04And then they flashed to him in the back of the bus,
41:06listening to the new Kenny Lattimore
41:08as he gets ready for a big NBA playoff game.
41:11As Rivers has the catch on the first down.
41:13He said that's living and being courageous,
41:15not even worrying about missing a shot
41:18that you haven't even taken yet.
41:19This is a team that has to go and swing,
41:21but they've got to do it their way.
41:23And he talked a lot about controlling the controllables.
41:25This is not a controllable.
41:27When guys go down, Kevin Dotson was the one
41:29who was slow to get up
41:30and will gingerly walk his way back to the Rams' sideline.
41:33But Devontae Adams, Puka Nakua, Kyron Williams,
41:37Matthew Stafford, certainly all the tight ends,
41:40the returning offensive line.
41:41This is an offense that we know and expect
41:43is a lot better than what we saw today.
41:46Oh, absolutely.
41:46They have the guys to do.
41:47And I think the best thing about this team is
41:49there's enough veteran guys on this offense
41:51that they're going to take their medicine.
41:53They're going to have this long plane flight home.
41:55They have until next Monday to get ready.
41:57But Matthew Stafford, Sean McVay, Devontae Adams,
42:01this moment's not too big for them.
42:03They're going to re-center.
42:04They're going to re-focus.
42:05And they're going to get this team back on the right track.
42:10On the handoff, Rivers for three.
42:17We certainly feel like San Francisco's going to throw
42:20another shrimp on the barbie after this one.
42:22I was wondering if you'd get that in there.
42:25And obviously, I'm not surprised that it made it in there.
42:32With under 30 seconds to play,
42:34we'll see if Los Angeles will run one more.
42:38And go for the end zone.
42:40Tech ball to drive for Stetson Bennett.
42:42Here's a handoff.
42:44Rivers outside.
42:46And Rivers will stay in bounds.
42:48Renardo Green makes the final tackle.
42:51And in the first ever NFL regular season game in Australia,
42:56an impressive second half-dominating performance
42:59from the San Francisco 49ers
43:01as they take this week one NFC West showdown
43:0427-7 over the Rams.
43:22So much familiarity and so much respect
43:24between these two teams
43:25who will, of course, play again
43:29in their NFC West divisional showdowns.
43:32That'll be week 14 on December 13th.
43:37In San Francisco.
43:38In fact, the Niners were a little bit bummed
43:40that they didn't get their game at SoFi Stadium,
43:42saying that they loved seeing the sea of red there.
43:44To be fair, there was plenty of red
43:46amongst the 100,000 here today.
43:48And I'll tell you what, no.
43:49We drove into the stadium today,
43:51and you're 100% right.
43:52There was red everywhere.
43:53And we talked to a couple of the locals,
43:55and they said that the Niners gear
43:56and all the stores around here
43:58sold out on that first day.
44:00And it just kind of speaks to the support
44:02this Niners team had all the way down here in Australia.
44:05But I'll tell you what,
44:06it's so good to see guys like Nick Bosa
44:09and Fred Warner and George Kittle
44:11back on that team for the Niners.
44:14And, you know, Fred Warner
44:15and his ability to bring guys together,
44:17you saw it at practice the other day,
44:19talking to everybody,
44:20Trent Williams, offense, defense,
44:22talking to Shanahan,
44:23and then to come out on this field
44:25and feel the energy from him and Dre,
44:27the big punch out from Fred Warner
44:30to give the ball back to the offense there
44:32in great field position.
44:33Guys like that are why it's fun to watch the NFL,
44:36and it's fun for me as a backer
44:38to see those two guys running around.
44:40There was so much conversation
44:42as the BYU boys there
44:44greet each other after the game.
44:46So much conversation as we talked about
44:48about the travel schedules coming in.
44:49Rams coming in just before the game,
44:52landing yesterday morning,
44:53playing the game about 24 hours later.
44:55The Niners spending the last week here
44:57preparing, familiarizing themselves,
44:59getting acclimated to Australia,
45:01and certainly the Niners looked like
45:03the fresher team in the second half today.
45:05Yeah, they looked fresh,
45:06and they had a great game plan,
45:08and, you know,
45:09I'm going to reference the practice again.
45:11It was so fun to go watch that
45:12and just see how loose they were.
45:14They were on time.
45:15They were having fun,
45:16and what a great game plan
45:18by Kyle Shanahan and Raheem Morris,
45:20and they looked like
45:22the fresher team today,
45:23and they leave Australia with a win.
45:25They did lose during the game.
45:27Dajon Stribling,
45:28their second-round pick
45:29would be out of Ole Miss.
45:30They also lost Jake Tonjes
45:32and already playing now for the season
45:35without Alfred Collins,
45:36who got hurt in practice this week.
45:37For Los Angeles,
45:39Sean McVay was all about
45:40we're not as worried about game one
45:43as we are for the entire season,
45:44and certainly a season
45:45that they have incredibly high expectations for,
45:48but it is worth noting
45:50that we didn't see Aaron Donald today,
45:52and we expect to see Aaron Donald quite soon,
45:54and while Miles Garrett
45:55didn't have the immediate impact
45:56that maybe many thought he would,
45:58those two together
45:59was a scary thought
46:00for the rest of the league.
46:01Yeah, and I don't even know
46:02how you start a game plan
46:03and how to block those guys,
46:04but, you know, I'll be honest,
46:06it'll look a lot like what Shanahan did,
46:08get the ball out,
46:09screens, try to slow him down,
46:10but, no, you're 100% right.
46:12Those two guys
46:13in obvious passing-down situations
46:15are dangerous,
46:16but the other thing
46:17that doesn't get talked about
46:17enough with those two
46:18is the impact that they have
46:20in the run game,
46:21and we didn't feel Miles
46:22like we thought we would today,
46:24but as this season goes on
46:25and those guys get more used
46:27to playing with each other,
46:28they are dynamic in the run game,
46:29and they are dynamic in the pass game.
46:31San Francisco is going to have
46:33a long and exciting ride home
46:34as we go down to MJ Acosta-Ruiz.
46:37Yeah, we are here
46:38with the players of the game,
46:39of course, Brock Purdy,
46:41Fred Warner, Nick Bosa.
46:43Guys, just so you know,
46:44there was voting on Netflix
46:45for the players of the game.
46:46Brock, you got 39% of the votes.
46:49The defense got 36%.
46:51Very close.
46:53Brock Purdy, best in the game.
46:55All right, it only makes sense.
46:56I get it.
46:57We wanted to make it a collective,
46:59I think, only fair traveling
47:00all this way,
47:00and ceremonial meat pies
47:03from Australia.
47:04So if you guys are hungry,
47:06feel free to dig in.
47:07This is your post-game snack.
47:08Nick Bosa's hungry.
47:09Nick Bosa's always hungry.
47:10I don't know,
47:10the macros aren't right.
47:11I'm going to have to tell you
47:12after the game.
47:13You know what?
47:14That's perfectly fine
47:15because our guy, Irv,
47:16has some other gifts
47:17for you guys.
47:18Yes, let me get you guys
47:18gifts.
47:19As players of the game,
47:21here is what you get.
47:23Hold up, Brock.
47:23I love these stats.
47:26Now...
47:26Go tagging, huh?
47:28Go tagging.
47:30Hold on.
47:31Oh, phenomenal.
47:35That's perfect.
47:37A little snug.
47:39Now you got it.
47:40There you go, buddy.
47:42Ah!
47:44Oh, Irv.
47:46Fred, while I have you here...
47:48It's going to be so...
47:49This great content right now.
47:50It's so good.
47:50It's so good right now.
47:52Perfect.
47:53Your kids are going to love this,
47:54by the way.
47:54Yeah.
47:55This defense came out here
47:56exactly like you guys told us
47:58they would.
47:58Firing on all sides.
48:00Raheem, I mean,
48:01leading the way for you guys.
48:02Perfect way to start the season.
48:04Yeah, it was a great start, right?
48:06I mean, you talk about the collective,
48:07starting with Raheem at the top,
48:08how prepared he had us for this game,
48:10and then coming out here
48:11and just playing as one.
48:12You know, we never wavered every play.
48:14We just took it one play at a time
48:15and tried to play our hardest.
48:17And our offense and special teams
48:19played great as well.
48:20Brock, our quarterback talked about this
48:22in the pregame.
48:23He said,
48:24you can't worry or look at the faces
48:26on the defense.
48:28You've heard so much about the Rams
48:30and the great players they have.
48:32How did you come into this game
48:34and what were you thinking
48:35about all that you've heard
48:36coming into this game?
48:38Yeah, I mean,
48:38at the end of the day,
48:39it comes down to playing our style of ball,
48:42doing, you know,
48:43what coaches us up to do
48:44and running our plays.
48:46Obviously, you've got to respect
48:46the other guys on the other side
48:47and we know what they can do.
48:48But at the end of the day, man,
48:50it comes down to executing,
48:51protecting the ball,
48:52moving the ball,
48:52getting points on the board,
48:53keeping it simple.
48:54But we still respect them.
48:56We've got to play them later in the year
48:57and it's going to be a good one again.
48:58Excellent point here by Nick
49:00on how he's going to fit this in the bag.
49:01We'll ship them to you.
49:02We'll get them to you for sure.
49:03But Nick,
49:04you came into this game,
49:05obviously,
49:06coming off of a huge injury.
49:08So many people had concerns,
49:09but not every single guy around you.
49:11Every person we spoke to said,
49:13Nick looks like Nick.
49:15What does that mean?
49:17It means everything.
49:17I mean,
49:18having the reassurance
49:19from your teammates
49:20is why you play this game.
49:22And I'm just happy
49:24to be back out
49:24on the field with the boys.
49:26Amazing.
49:27Congratulations, guys.
49:28Enjoy the jackets.
49:29Congrats, my Raider brother.
49:30Take a meat pie to go,
49:31if you like.
49:31My St. Thomas acquaintance Raider, brother.
49:33All right, the players of the game
49:35here from Melbourne.
49:36We're going to take a short break here
49:38on Netflix and we'll be right back.
49:40You can.
