01:10throughout the race, taking a clean sweep of victories,

01:15becoming the fifth driver in Formula 2 history

01:18to do a clean sweep, also like Nikola Solov this season.

01:23And it was a one-two finish as well for the Invicta Racing team.

01:29And Joshua Dirksen, you can see, not the most conventional run

01:32background to the pit lane, but what a session for him overall.

01:37Well, now we turn our focus to a brand-new circuit for Formula 2,

01:41the third time we've had a new circuit on the calendar this season.

01:45The Madring, this one.

01:47We've been to Miami, we've been to calendar over this.

01:50A first-ever visit to a brand-new circuit

01:53for everyone around the paddock in the Madring.

01:57And another visit to Spain this season as well,

02:02with Barcelona taking place earlier in the season.

02:04Two of the four victories we've had at the new circuit so far

02:07have come from Spanish team Campos Racing.

02:10I'm Chris McCarthy, Alex Brundle alongside me as always.

02:14Alex, this is an exciting prospect for all of us

02:17around the paddock, isn't it?

02:18What is going to befall the drivers out on the Madring

02:22for the first time?

02:23The third Spanish venue to hold a Formula 2 race

02:26after Barcelona and Valencia, of course.

02:29It looks complex and incredibly challenging

02:33between the walls, of course, in Madrid.

02:365.4 kilometres, the layout.

02:38There's a little bit of road-converted tarmac.

02:42There's a little bit of purpose-built space out there.

02:46Some incredible bankings, undulations,

02:49turning braking zones and closing high-speed corners

02:53are going to challenge the drivers to the limit.

02:57And what an opportunity to take on this new racetrack.

03:00Yeah, it's going to be the 22nd different circuit

03:05to join the Formula 2 calendar.

03:08We saw Valencia on the GP2 calendar.

03:12But in terms of Madrid, you have to go back to Harama in 1987

03:18since we raced at this level, at this part of Spain.

03:22Joshua Dirksen, what a superb weekend for him last time.

03:25Time out.

03:25Before we talk too much about the circuit,

03:27a 1-2 finish for him, Victor.

03:29A clean sweep for him.

03:30Yeah, doing the double.

03:31Joshua Dirksen, brilliant set of performances,

03:33taking wins in both the sprint race and the feature,

03:36with a pair of really impressive drives, actually.

03:39Particularly, I think, in the feature race.

03:42Pressure all the way through to the end of both of those races.

03:47In Victor, the standout in terms of teams

03:49have really put a car underneath the drivers

03:52with a tremendous efficiency at Monza.

03:56And a lot of points taken away,

03:58both for he and in the feature race.

04:01Rafa Cameron didn't get on quite so well in the sprint,

04:03having turned the car around, or been turned around,

04:06in the first chicane on the Reta Velo.

04:09But still sits second in the championship, Chris.

04:1211 points behind Nikola Solov at the Red Bull Junior

04:16for Campos, who still leads the standings.

04:19Yeah, no points score for Gabriele Mini,

04:21so he is now 30 points back in the standings,

04:25the MP driver.

04:26But we're hoping to turn that round.

04:27In terms of the team's championship,

04:29Campos Racing, 47 points clear from Invicta Racing,

04:34who really took some points out of them last weekend.

04:38The new circuit, though,

04:39any comparisons you can draw it to as a circuit?

04:43There are plenty, but we can see it now.

04:45It's sort of Baku meets Jeddah, meets a bit of Macau.

04:50Yeah.

04:50There's a lot of it to explore.

04:5322 corners with considerable complexity.

04:56This pit lane, very long,

04:59is the first thing that we can note

05:01from the pictures that we're getting live.

05:04It's going to be a reasonable pit stop loss,

05:05but it does cut out the first chicane

05:08and rejoins through the middle of Turn 3.

05:11They're giving them a relatively long virtual safety car test here.

05:16Surely not, just to give the drivers a little bit of a bearing

05:19of the new racetrack before they send them at racing speed.

05:23As well, of course, as to give Race Controller

05:26an idea of how the systems are working.

05:29As you can see, the hard tyre will focus this weekend.

05:32That is the white sidewall.

05:34They've also got the soft,

05:35so it's a compound jump as well for the drivers

05:38to contend with at the Maddering this weekend.

05:41And what do we already know?

05:43We already know that it's really hard on the tyre thermally,

05:48and the drivers have been suffering in Formula 3

05:51through to the end of the racetrack

05:54with thermal degradation.

05:56Yeah, it really is going to be a good one

05:58to watch throughout the weekend.

05:59But as we mentioned last weekend,

06:01Joshua Dirksen taking a clean sweep of victories

06:04and taking a record-equalling eighth win

06:06in the feature race.

06:08Let's hear what the Invicta driver had to say about it.

06:13To be honest, it was an amazing weekend.

06:16I couldn't get the smile out of my face.

06:18To be honest, it was very special

06:20to get both wins, and then especially in Monza.

06:23A lot of points scored, which was very important.

06:27But anyways, that was now some days ago.

06:30Now we have the Madrid weekend in front,

06:31so I'm going to focus now on trying to deliver

06:35that same performance again.

06:37Everything starts from zero,

06:38but for sure it's very nice to go with that feeling

06:42now into this race weekend.

06:44A driver, part of the Mercedes family as well.

06:48Joshua Dirksen does have a habit, doesn't he?

06:50When he gets to the second half of the season,

06:52he really starts to find some form.

06:53That's three rounds, three wins now

06:56in the last three rounds.

06:57Yeah, four wins in total,

06:58having taken the very first race win of the year.

07:02Turned up to the P1 position in a Mercedes, didn't he?

07:06After the Monza event,

07:08but maybe not the Mercedes that he envisioned

07:10arriving there first in,

07:12with an issue for him after the race.

07:14Didn't yield any kind of scrutineering problem

07:17for Joshua Dirksen,

07:19who retained the win

07:22and very much deserved indeed.

07:25A brilliant drive for him.

07:28Yeah, you can see Cushmine here,

07:30the driver with the most experience out there

07:32at this level,

07:34so he'll be hoping to use that experience

07:35to his advantage.

07:36But we've had a couple of experiences of this now,

07:39haven't we?

07:39We had Miami,

07:40we had Canada that came onto the calendar

07:42earlier this season,

07:43so the teams now had some practice

07:45at learning a new circuit.

07:47To give you a feel

07:48for the ability

07:50of a driver at Formula 2 level,

07:52I just want to make clear

07:54to the audience that are watching,

07:55these drivers,

07:56when you see them do laps of the limit,

07:58that's the first lap they've ever done

08:00of this track,

08:01the first flying lap

08:02they've ever done of this track.

08:03They've seen it on the simulator,

08:04they've seen it in, you know,

08:07onboard cameras that they'll have studied

08:08from the test that went on in Formula 3

08:10and that have watched the session before,

08:12but when you watch these first flying laps

08:14and assess the quality of these drivers,

08:18what's so impressive,

08:20I think, at this level is

08:21that really is the first time

08:23they've ever tried to go as fast as they can

08:25around these 22 corners.

08:26And how is it,

08:27from your experience,

08:28when you take on a challenge like that

08:31for the first time?

08:32You know,

08:32it's such a factor at this level

08:35because they get one free practice,

08:37they get one new set of tyres

08:39to play with in free practice.

08:41And so much of the time,

08:43the only, well,

08:44all of the time in Formula 2,

08:45the only time you ever get to fill new tyres

08:47before qualifying is right now.

08:49The track is green

08:50and you really have to get your head around it.

08:54And a big jump,

08:55I mean,

08:55we've been talking about Colton Herter this year

08:57and moving across from IndyCar

08:59and the challenges of that,

09:01despite, you know,

09:02his clear quality behind the wheel.

09:04One of those challenges

09:05is you just don't get any time

09:09to get up to speed in Formula 2

09:11and you have to be able

09:12to go straight out

09:13at a new track

09:14you might have seen

09:15on the simulator or on video

09:16and just connect the apexes

09:18as though it was qualifying.

09:19It's a very specific skill.

09:21And with a circuit like this as well,

09:25incredibly unforgiving.

09:26The walls come at you very quickly,

09:28don't they?

09:28So is this going to be

09:30a 45-minute practice session

09:31where the drivers

09:32will just have to up their limit

09:35as they go throughout the session?

09:38They've got to choose

09:38what they're going to do,

09:40haven't they?

09:40How they're going to try and build

09:42and how they're going to try

09:44and work out this layout

09:47to the best of their ability.

09:48Do you build up slowly?

09:49Do you try and attack

09:50and then go backwards?

09:51You can't really throw the car

09:54at the racetrack

09:55and get away with it here.

09:57So you've got to build

09:58throughout the whole process

10:00of free practice.

10:02Two DRS zones,

10:02we should say, Chris.

10:03One of them is down the front straight.

10:05One of them is on the run down

10:06between turn three and four.

10:08So back-to-back zones, really,

10:09that come up very early in the lap.

10:11Yeah, that makes the end

10:12to the lap very crucial,

10:13doesn't it?

10:14Coming through turns 19

10:16and into 20, turn 21.

10:18And this is that long run,

10:21long flat-out run

10:22all the way around

10:23to this very, very tricky

10:24braking zone at turn four and five.

10:26Yeah, they're hammering

10:27the curbs through five and six.

10:30Then the biggest elevation change

10:31of the lap

10:31through the mid-corner

10:33of the bunker,

10:34which is turn seven,

10:37eight, and nine

10:38to the chicane section

10:41to reduce the speed

10:43before they make their way

10:44into the long banking

10:46of the Monumental

10:47past the crowd,

10:49which will be lining the racetrack,

10:50no doubt,

10:52on Sunday morning.

10:53Yeah, what a sight

10:54that's going to be.

10:54And you can already see

10:55Alex Dunn very twitchy

10:58coming through

10:59La Monumental there

11:00and just coming now

11:02down into the next braking zone.

11:04It already looks like

11:05they're finding some

11:06of the tricks of this circuit.

11:0813, 14, 15

11:09is supposed to be flat out,

11:11but let's see

11:12at the end of the race.

11:13That's a really tricky

11:14braking zone

11:15down towards turn 17

11:16underneath this bridge,

11:19tunnel,

11:20and then through

11:21the mid-corner

11:23of Norte,

11:24turn 18 and 19.

11:27Big braking zone

11:27to end the lap,

11:28and that's what

11:29they've been talking about.

11:30All of the drivers,

11:31after you've been

11:32through that bank section,

11:33how unwieldy the cars are

11:35because of the massive

11:37tyre temperature

11:38that's been created.

11:39It looks very twitchy

11:40on this lap.

11:41Alex Dunn will be

11:42just looking to build up

11:44as we go throughout

11:45the session.

11:48And coming down

11:49the start-finish straight

11:50now, Alex Dunn,

11:52as we jump on board

11:53with Dino Viganovic

11:56for dams,

11:56just heading up

11:57to the end of the lap

11:58here now,

11:58the dams driver.

11:59Yeah, this is the run

12:01through the final

12:03couple of corners,

12:30what we saw here,

12:32him coming through

12:33La Monumental.

12:33So it's a generous lift

12:35through La Monumental,

12:37and that is so tricky

12:39in a Formula 2 car.

12:41You can see the car

12:42trying to handle the bumps.

12:43This through the mid-corner

12:45of Turn 18,

12:48I believe,

12:49where they're already

12:50off the road.

12:51And they're going to have

12:51to watch that,

12:52aren't they,

12:53in terms of track limits.

12:54Nothing on the race

12:55control screen so far,

12:56but if they do find

12:58themselves in too early,

13:01then they could easily

13:02be all the way off the road.

13:04Through the exit

13:04of Turn 21 comes

13:06Joshua Dirksen,

13:07who took both of those

13:08victories back in Monza

13:11with a purple middle sector.

13:12Across the line he goes

13:13and six and a half tenths

13:15quicker than Nikola Solov,

13:17but very much get,

13:19very much looks at the drivers

13:21are just building

13:22into this session.

13:23As you mentioned,

13:23this is the very first time

13:25these drivers are heading

13:26around this circuit.

13:29So it's a 45-minute

13:31practice session

13:33and learning experience

13:34before they have to go

13:34qualifying later today.

13:36Mining with a bit

13:37of a swapper there

13:37through the mid-corner

13:38of 20.

13:39Pit lane entry

13:40is on his right-hand side.

13:42You see how much

13:43the drivers are struggling.

13:44Looks dirty out there.

13:46The wind is a bit

13:47of a tailwind

13:48as they make their way

13:49in towards

13:50that first chicane,

13:52as you can see.

13:53So that'll be affecting

13:54the drivers too,

13:55despite the fact

13:56that there are walls

13:57around the circuit

13:57here mitigating

13:59its effects.

14:01We can just see

14:02a bit of a queue

14:03forming up

14:04towards the end

14:05of the lap here

14:06now as well.

14:07And we've got

14:10at speed there,

14:13And this is something

14:13the drivers will have

14:14to be cautious of

14:15in qualifying

14:16because look at this,

14:17there's absolutely

14:18nowhere for Roman

14:20One of the narrowest

14:21sections of the racetrack,

14:23this final sector

14:24of the lap

14:24and we're seeing

14:25them queuing,

14:26aren't we,

14:27down towards turn 20

14:28because they're trying

14:30to keep the tyre

14:31under control

14:32so that they've got

14:33not too much tyre

14:34temperature

14:35as they make their way

14:36into the lap.

14:37That's going to be

14:38a factor, again,

14:39the queuing

14:40as they make their way

14:41through there.

14:45and making his way

14:46out through turn 6

14:48as he makes his way

14:49through that 8%

14:52elevation change

14:53through the mid-corner

14:58is already suffering

14:59in the first part

15:00How much does that

15:01tyre preparation

15:02have an effect

15:03on what happens

15:04in the lap

15:04because a lot

15:05of the time

15:07with a driver

15:07in qualifying

15:08but a lot of it

15:09is down to that

15:09preparation as well.
