00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio. Now if I said marmalade sandwiches, duffel coat, Wellington boots, you'd all
00:36know what I was referring to, wouldn't you? Unless of course you were banged up in some sort of Peruvian
00:40jail somewhere. Because he's back. Paddington Bear is back. We first saw him in books 50 years ago, way back
00:47in 58 actually. Creation of a TV cameraman called Michael Bond. And then there was a TV show, lasted 10
00:56years until the mid 80s and now guess what, we've got a movie.
00:59And it's called Paddington and it's on the big screen, even as we speak and who's in it. All sorts
01:04of extraordinary big name people. Nicole Kidman, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Bonneville, who appears to be in absolutely every
01:12film that's being shown at the moment.
01:14And the great Peter Capaldi, of course, the new Doctor Who. Great stuff. Now of course I was 20 when
01:20Paddington Bear appeared for the first time, so I wasn't really hooked into him. But perhaps you were.
01:27I remember Paddington. Yeah? But I had a Manchester United teddy bear. Oh, well done. In the cot. So he
01:34was my teddy bear. So your dad made sure of that?
01:37My dad made sure I had a Man United baby goat and a Man United teddy bear and I've got
01:40the photos to prove it, so whenever anyone asks me why I support them, it's in the blood from the
01:44womb.
01:44That's right. It was almost the first thing you saw. Exactly. There we are. Well, who have we got? We
01:50have got the young lady from County Tipperary, from Nina Antoinette Ryan, who is doing so well.
01:56Two wins under your belt already. And she fell out of a plane 10,000 feet over the Grand Canary,
02:02I think.
02:02So, quite a character with Antoinette. Joined today by Kevin Duckworth, a psychology graduate from Edinburgh, big comedy fan, tried
02:11his hand at stand-up in last year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
02:15That's right, Nick, yeah. What was that like? Frightening?
02:18Not too bad, actually. I've seen myself kind of dying in front of four and smashing it in front of
02:24200, so it's very much a mixed bag.
02:25Very good. Very good. Well, good luck to you both. Good luck to Kevin and Antoinette Ryan. Come on, big
02:32round of applause, then.
02:35And, of course, Susie is with us on this Friday with the wonderful, the wonderful Len Goodman, who's been such
02:42a great sport this week. Welcome back, then.
02:45It's lovely to be here. More big stories. Well, we'll see what comes out, yeah.
02:50Now, then, Antoinette, what are we going to do? Letters?
02:52Hi again, Richard. Hi, Antoinette. Can we start with a consonant, please? We can, thank you. Start today with R.
02:58And another. F. And a third. M. And another. N. A vowel, please. I. And another. O. And another. E.
03:19And another.
03:22I. And finish with a vowel, please. And finish with A. And here's the countdown clock.
03:31I. And another.
04:03Antoinette?
04:04Seven.
04:04A seven.
04:05Yes, given?
04:06Just a six.
04:07And that six?
04:08Is, um, four-man.
04:10Thank you, Antoinette.
04:11Four-man.
04:12Four-man.
04:15The four-man.
04:16Four-man is excellent.
04:18I was just looking at...
04:18Was it a foamer?
04:19Foamer, yeah.
04:20Yeah.
04:21I think I've tried that before,
04:23and it's not there, Kevin.
04:25Because I always thought it was a type of wave,
04:26but it's not in.
04:28OK.
04:28Sorry about that.
04:29Bad luck.
04:30Now, talking about waves,
04:32how about Len?
04:33What have you got?
04:34We've got firemen.
04:36What else?
04:36We've got firemen.
04:37We've got fermion,
04:38which, as you know, is a subatomic particle.
04:40Of course.
04:40And we have moraine,
04:41which is a mass of sediment
04:43carried down by a glacier.
04:44And they're all sevens.
04:45They're all sevens.
04:46Well done.
04:46They're worms!
04:47Very good.
04:48So, Kevin,
04:49how about a letters game?
04:50Good afternoon, Rachel.
04:51Afternoon, Kevin.
04:52Can I please have a consonant?
04:54Start with P.
04:54And another.
04:57L.
04:59And a third.
05:01R.
05:02And a vowel, please?
05:05E.
05:06And another.
05:08A.
05:09And another.
05:11E.

06:04Kevin?
06:04Pleaser.
06:06Operates.
06:07Operates.
06:08Well done.
06:09Strong stuff.
06:10Yep.
06:10Strong stuff.
06:11Strong stuff there from Antoinette.
06:13Now then, Len, what else have we got?
06:15Susie?
06:15Well, we've got operates, but that's about it at the moment.
06:19It is.
06:20Oh, and Kevin, you're really not going to like me because you can only be a crowd pleaser
06:24and not just a pleaser on its own.
06:26So, no pleaser in there.
06:28That's not pleasing me.
06:29So, operates takes the biscuit, as it were.
06:32It does.
06:32All right.
06:32Very good.
06:33All right.
06:33Now then, we move to Rachel's area.
06:37Antoinette, how about a numbers game?
06:39Too large, please, Rachel.
06:40Thank you, Antoinette.
06:41Two large ones and four little ones for the first numbers game today.
06:45And these ones are three, eight, nine, six.
06:49And the large ones, one hundred and seventy-five.
06:52And the target should reach two hundred and fifty-nine.
06:55Two-five-nine.
06:56Two-five, and a hundred and thirty-five.
07:01Those are four, five, six, and five to point.
07:08All right.
07:13United States.
07:13All right.
07:14We're down to three hundred and ten.
07:18I love you.
07:18I love you with the falls.
07:24Yeah, I love you.
07:25I love you with all the un functional.
07:27yes Antoinette 261 not written down mm-hmm Kevin I've got 261 written down right Antoinette
07:39um okay so I had 100 multiplied by 3 100 multiplied by 3 300 and 6 8 is 48 yep
07:49minus 9 is 39 minus 9 for 39 and take it off yeah 261 yeah yeah two away thank you
07:59Kevin I have gone 75
08:01times 3 75 times 3 225 and then I have got no I've gone wrong ah bad luck bad luck
08:11is it so tricky
08:12Rachel um there's not too many ways to get there you could have said 8 minus 6 is 2 times
08:1975 is 150
08:21and then add the 100 and add the 9 for 259 that's great well done thank you thank you Rachel
08:30well done let's have a tea time teaser shall we it's tad merry and the clue his expression wasn't a
08:38tad
08:38merry it was quite the opposite his expression wasn't a tad merry it was quite the opposite
08:58welcome back I left with the clue his expression wasn't a tad merry it was quite the opposite
09:03uh because he was uh martyred now where does the word martyr come from oh well I'll look this up
09:11for
09:12you uh Nick it goes all the way back to Greek um and in Christian use it meant uh witness
09:16but it's
09:17probably related to an older word meaning care or trouble and obviously trouble then came to the
09:22forefront in later years okay with the idea of self-sacrifice but martyrs are always killed for their
09:29faith yes for their call always for their faith yeah all right thank you very much now then Kevin your
09:35letters game thank you and can I have a constant please Rachel thank you Kevin G and another L and
09:45a third
09:45T and the fourth R and a vowel please I and another vowel E and a consonant N and a
10:07consonant M and a vowel please
10:11and the last one you stand by
10:18so
10:30so
10:32so
10:32so
10:45Yes, Kevin.
10:46Just a five.
10:47A five.
10:48Antoinette.
10:49Seven.
10:50Yes.
10:51Goat.
10:52Thank you, Antoinette.
10:53Melting.
10:54Melting.
10:55Mm-hmm.

10:58Now then, Len.
10:59We've got ringlets, something that I've never had, and a mingler.
11:04Yes.
11:04A mingler.
11:05A mingler.
11:06A good mingler.
11:07Very good.
11:0829 points.
11:09Well done, Kevin.
11:10Don't worry.
11:11Bags of time as we turn to Antoinette for a letters game.
11:14Can we start with a consonant again, please, Rachel?
11:15Thank you, Antoinette.
11:17D.
11:17And another.
11:20X.
11:20And a third.
11:23G.
11:24And a fourth.
11:26N.
11:27And a vowel.
11:29E.
11:30And another.
11:31A.
11:32And another.

12:00Bye.
12:02Bye.
12:04Bye.
12:06Bye.
12:17Antoinette six a six and Kevin just safe and that five so and thank you pleased
12:25glazed I'm glazed over most of the time yeah well I dangle quite a bit as well
12:30so we've got dangle for six but we've got gleaned gleaned for seven very good well done very good
12:3935 points and we're into a numbers session Kevin your numbers game and just a point if you've got
12:45one please reach out a point yeah we'll try and get you a few and just take and one large
12:50and five
12:50small one large and five small and we will get you off the mark here thank you Kevin right these
12:54five little ones are one another one you've got your ones nine seven and another seven and the
13:02large one 75 this could be tricky target three hundred and seventy nine three seven nine
13:42seven seven seven three seven seven two away so tell us about it Antoinette seven minus the two ones
13:51seven minus the two ones is five multiplied by 75 multiplied by 75 is 375 then nine minus seven is
14:01two to add it on
14:02and nine minus the other seven yep three seven seven three seven seven but that's not what we asked for
14:10three seven nine is that a puzzler for you um if you say seven minus one is six times by
14:19nine is 54
14:21four times that by seven for 378 and then you have one left over to add on three seven very
14:29good
14:31thank you very much thank you very much now then Len Goodman and you told us yesterday how your dance
14:39career started but things suddenly changed when you hit 60 it is all exploded it did indeed there I am
14:48I'm 60
14:49years old I'm almost retired I'm working about two days a week up the dance school just chilling out
14:55and suddenly the rumor came around our little world of ballroom dancing that the BBC were going to start
15:01this new show no name for it but it involved professional dancers and celebrities and judges
15:07and my mates were phoning me up in the dance world saying I've just been up to the BBC to
15:14be interviewed
15:14as a judge and oh lovely have you been I said no no anyway it went on and in the
15:20end I just lied and
15:21I said yes I've been up but uh I don't fancy doing it to be honest anyway right near the
15:27about three
15:27weeks before it all kicked off the producers were talking to one of the pros Erin who danced with
15:33Anton and uh they said we're still not happy with exactly who the judges are is there anyone else
15:40you can think of so they have this magazine called dance news they were going down no I've tried her
15:45what about this no no and then Erin said what about old Len Goodman and she said who's there I
15:52said
15:52give him a go he's all right so up I went and I sat in a little room and there
15:58was the producer a lady
15:59called Izzy Izzy pick and a television and a video and uh she said just watch this video of a
16:07waltz and
16:07see what you think and this and that so she stuck it in and I watched this couple waltz what
16:13did you
16:13think I said well yeah he had nice rise and fall yeah lovely more rise and fall than a bride's
16:18nightie
16:18beautiful and this and that and I'm chatting away about it all and I was there for about two hours
16:24and
16:25then she said well thank you very much never cracked your smile or not I thought uh I phoned my
16:30wife
16:30on the way I said I won't get that job she didn't obviously like two days later I got the
16:37call we'd love
16:38you to be on wow I tell you I couldn't believe it so up I went and there you are
16:45and yeah I was 60 years
16:47and the pilot you know when they have a little rehearsal before the main show was on my 60th birthday

24:40so
24:53so
25:08Antoinette seven Kevin just a six and that's six rusted thank you now then Antoinette
25:16tirades nice tirade tirade then gives people a tirade not often I quite often have to readjust
25:26to an eight very good well done excellent very good 77 plays 21 but now we swivel towards Susie and
25:41her
25:41wonderful origins of words now then Susie well I have an email Nick from Ben Sellers like Peter Sellers and
25:51that's
25:51relevant because he said is my name is my surname as simple as it sounds and I'm guessing that Ben
25:56thinks
25:57uh his great ancestors were market traders or vendors of some kind and a lot of um
26:03surnames do come from that Chapman for example was that was a market traders related to cheap
26:07um so sellers it's English and Scottish and the S at the end suggests that it um
26:13uh the original sellers was the son of a man called seller because the S at the end like Rogers
26:20uh for
26:21example usually means son of so Rogers was the son of Roger um but possibly he was a vendor or
26:28a seller of
26:29some kind but it's much more likely that he was actually a saddler uh and it goes back to the
26:33French
26:33sell and the Latin um originally uh sidere meaning to sit so he was probably a saddler a maker of
26:40saddles
26:40um but while we were at it I was researching Benjamin as well and that's quite nice that's a Hebrew
26:46name
26:46and it um basically means son of the right hand because the right hand was considered to be um to
26:53sort of indicate strength uh and vigor and vitality um so that's a lovely name and then I got thinking
26:58about Len's name uh Goodman wonderful name um the original Goodman was probably the master of a
27:05household probably a very important household or he could have been a landowner um who was granted the
27:10right to own land by the monarch uh so it's very very important Leonard even better mighty lion
27:17mighty lion now we're now you're cooking on gas mighty lion Lynn and um Len told me his middle name
27:24which was Gordon uh and that so it's really great as well that probably goes back to Richard Gordon the
27:29Gordon clan etc um and said to have been the grandson of some knight of a knight not some knight
27:35who
27:35slew apparently some monstrous animal I don't think it was a dragon it was probably a wild boar or
27:39something but almighty warriors fantastic fantastic how about that hi everyone that's worth a clap well done
27:50scores line 77 21 and Kevin to choose Kevin penultimate letters game now thank you Nick can I have a
