00:31Good afternoon and welcome. Welcome to the Countdown Studio. Now, seven years ago it was King Tut and now it's
00:38the king of rock and roll. What's the sort of connection there? Well, two huge exhibitions and they both take
00:46place or took place at London's O2 Arena.
00:49Now, there may be some rather sort of faint similarities between Tutankhamun and Elvis Presley. I suppose gold played a
00:59large part in both their lives. Who can ever forget the wonderful death mask, the gold death mask of Tutankhamun.
01:06And of course, Elvis Presley was pretty much all gold, not at least his gold lame suits. Extraordinary things. Anyway,
01:14there we are. Elvis at the O2. It's on until the 31st of August.
01:19And there are over 300 Elvis items, including that ghastly pink Cadillac and his American Eagle jumpsuit. It's the, I
01:29think the best exhibition I've ever been to actually was Tutankhamun's exhibition in the 60s, the great Cairo exhibition.
01:37It was fantastic. And of all the things I've seen, maybe, the death mask of Tutankhamun is just extraordinary. You
01:46can't take your eyes off it. Wonderful.
01:47Well, you've sold it. You've sold it to me.
01:49Go and have a look if you ever get a chance, my word. What about you? Have you been to
01:53a memorable exhibition recently?
01:56Well, the last one I went to, I was in New York just before Christmas and I went to see,
02:00at Radio City, the Rockettes show, the Christmas Spectacular.
02:03And I didn't really know what the Rockettes were. I kind of heard it in American stuff, like Friends, they
02:08mentioned the Rockettes.
02:09Yes.
02:09There's 50 dancing girls about, all in unison. And it's been going since the 30s. And they were incredible.
02:15So there was an exhibition of the Rockettes outfits. And they only had about 12.
02:19Yes.
02:20Because they started in the 30s. There was, you know, outfits from over the years. And they're fabulous. They're just
02:24diamantes.
02:25And some of them were red, tiny little skimpy things with feathers everywhere. And other ones were astronaut things with
02:32beads and hats.
02:32Brilliant.
02:33And they're just brilliant. The stuff they could do was ridiculous. So energetic.
02:37That's one of the great things to see in New York. Yeah. And you did it.
02:40Oh, yeah. They really, they really put on a show, those girls.
02:42Brilliant stuff. Well, let's see who's going to put on a show for us today.
02:45Will it be Tracy Mills, housewife from Stockport, playing for her eighth win today?
02:52Because if you pull this off, you'll be an octo champ.
02:54Yes.
02:54So good luck to you. But, you know, don't slacken off.
02:57Because you've got, first of all, to get past Wendy Cook, a retired lecturer from Darwin in Lancashire, whose passion
03:03is scuba diving.
03:04And she started when she was 52, so very recently. And so she spends as much time as possible underwater.
03:11Where do you go diving, Wendy?
03:13Made in Scotland. I really love the Sound of Mull, which is on the west coast.
03:18And even down into the northeast of England coast near Eyemouth.
03:21But you're in wetsuits, I guess.
03:23Dry suits.
03:24Dry suits.
03:24Dry suits, because I dive all through the winter.
03:26Because you are keen, aren't you?
03:28I am keen, yes.
03:28And what are you diving for? What are you looking for? What excites you?
03:32Wrecks, obviously. Things like the Sound of Mull, or even go up to Scapa Flow to see the First World
03:36War wrecks.
03:37But I'm also very, very interested in the wildlife that you can see down there, and there's loads to see.
03:43Well, well, well. What an exciting life you live.
03:45I do lead a very exciting life.
03:47All right. So a big round of applause for Wendy and Tracy Mills.
03:53And in the corner, of course, Susie.
03:55And for the last time, until we're persuaded to come back, the wonderful Helen Skelton.
04:00More stories from Helen today.
04:02Good afternoon. I mean, oh, Wendy, I can't believe you do that.
04:05I got stuck in a dry suit once. It's not pleasant. So well done, you.
04:08Tracy Mills. Take it away. Letters go.
04:11Hi, Rachel. Can I have a consonant, please?
04:13Thank you. Start the day with R.

05:27Well spotted, Tracey.
05:29And what of the corner?
05:30Helen.
05:31Er, nothing longer than narrated, but errand, tarred, so-called sixes, toads only sixes.

07:00Er, guinea is very good.
07:01You can't spell duping with a J.
07:04Oh.
07:04Wendy, I'm afraid that's not there.
07:06Sorry.
07:06But what can we have there?
07:08Susie?
07:08Helen?
07:09J-ping?
07:09Yes.
07:10It could have had an A instead of a U for j-ping.
07:12Yeah.
07:12Six.
07:13And we had guinea as well, so just six.
07:15Well done.

13:34done by victory well done all right
13:38and now helen skelton presenting doing all sorts of things big big events too big
13:49events but uh occasionally it can be pretty stressful yes i work in sport a lot and
13:58actually before i went into children's television i worked in football my
14:01brother played football over scotland so every weekend i was watching kilmarnock and gretner
14:05and hamilton and so in my first job i was always interviewing football managers so this year when
14:12i got asked to do a bit of football i thought no problem that's fine um but obviously sports
14:17journalists are phenomenal particularly the guys who write for papers absolutely brilliant
14:21what they do but you can imagine a lot of them live up to the stereotype they're very serious
14:25sort of hacks and i went to um a press conference at man city with manuel pellegrini english is not
14:33his first language so of course muggins here chirps up asking a question which i wasn't meant to do
14:38um after i'd gone around and introduced myself to everybody and all the hacks said oh we don't do that
14:43i said i do and so i asked him a question and he didn't understand my accent so rather than
14:47let it go i
14:48went with it and i must have asked about three or four times because i was like a dog with
14:52a bone just
14:53couldn't let it go until someone told me to pipe down which was slightly mortifying but worse than
14:58that when you go to conference games obviously there's a lot at stake because the managers if
15:03they don't win they can lose their jobs and i was interviewing a manager who was particularly
15:08stressed out and just lost a game and i asked a couple of questions and anyway he sort of rather
15:13lost his temper and he started shouting back at me and i was so i was so good i held
15:18my nerve
15:19and i maintained my line of questions totally stony faced anyway he sort of went off and that was the
15:25end of that and everyone's like yeah well done helen that was really hardcore but i got myself so
15:30wound up as soon as someone spoke to me i just burst out crying so on air i went from
15:35being this
15:36really serious yes i can deal with you to i'm a girl and i'm crying

25:09We just thought we'd give the seven to Rachel.
25:11Yeah, I did get this one, actually.
25:14Yes, she did.
25:16Then we got that, too.
25:17Cognate.
25:18So think about something.
25:19Yeah, it's a linguistic term.
25:21So cognate is something that's linked to another word.
25:24Oh, I see.
25:25Very good.
25:25Well done, Nathan.
25:27All on your own.
25:30Excellent stuff.
25:30But now we turn to Susie.
25:33Susie, the Queen of Dictionary Corner.
25:35Not today.
25:36Speak to us.
25:37Well, I'm going to be talking riches and wealth
25:41and a lot of expressions in English that are linked to making a bit of money.
25:46I'm going to start with gold.
25:47Very rich source, if you'll excuse the pun.
25:50By the end of the 19th century, enough mining of gold had been done.
25:55Gold rushes, et cetera, for the expression to strike gold
25:57to become part of everyday English.
26:00And because of those amazing gold rushes,
26:04which gave us words like digs,
26:06because they were the mud huts that were dug out of the ground
26:08for the local, well, the people who had run to pan for gold,
26:13we get to pan out, which was to pan for gold.
26:15That's where that expression comes from.
26:18Silver is linked to sterling health, which we never really think about,
26:21but we use that.
26:23Sterling, incidentally, means coin with a little star,
26:25because the first Norman pennies had little stars printed on them.
26:29Just keeping track of money has given us all sorts of terms.
26:32The calendar, we get from the calends,
26:34which was the first day of the Roman month when all debts fell due
26:37and had to be settled.
26:39We have the bottom line, which is literally the bottom line
26:42at the bottom of a balance sheet.
26:44The day of reckoning, that's also an accounting term.
26:47Lay it on the line, that comes from paying as well,
26:49from 1920s America.
26:51And keeping someone posted, that's also from accountancy,
26:54because it's an Americanism.
26:55It goes right back to the first half of the 19th century.
26:58And it was found in the form posted up.
27:00So you would post up a figure in the accounts,
27:02post up the books to bring them up to date.
27:04So someone who was completely up to date with the financial information
27:08and had it right down to the nail would be kept posted.
27:12And that's where you get that expression from.
27:13Superb. Thank you. Well done.
27:18Seat of learning here. Well done.
27:20Now, Wendy, letters game.

28:44I have to disallow Pilates, I'm afraid,
28:46because it's a proper noun.
28:48It's an eponym.
28:49It was named after its invention,
28:51and it's kept that capital P.
28:53It probably will lose it one day.
28:54Give it time.
28:55Give it time.
28:56All right.
28:56What else have we got there?
28:58Helen Skelton.
28:59I was going in for Pilates as well, so, yeah.
29:02Uh-uh, in that sense.
29:04And then we had epulates, but nothing better than that.
29:06That was it?
29:07I'm very scared that Rachel will say she has a nine now.
29:10It's so close to her.
29:11Not.
29:12Not at the moment.

30:18Well, Tracy. Eight. And eight, Wendy. Six. And that's six. Coding. Coding. Now, Miss Mills. Comedian. Comedian. Excellent. Well done.
30:30Yeah. Very good. Now, in the corner, Susie. Ellen. We had comedian, but we also had demonic.
30:38Demonic. Demonic. Devilish. Devilish. Yes, devilish eight. Very good. All right. Anything else? Nothing else. That'll do. 94 points. Well
30:46done, Tracy. Let's see whether Wendy will hold you back from getting 100. It's Wendy's numbers game. Can I let
30:53you choose six yourself, please? Thank you. Right. Let's try and get you some points. Yes. Let's get one large
30:58and five little, and I will try to choose a good one. Yeah. Thank you. The last time this week,
31:03the numbers are four, three, one, six.
31:07Six, five, and the large one, 50. And the target, 613. Six, one, three.
31:46Six, one, three. Wendy? Six, one, four. Tracy? Six, one, three. Six, one, three. Take it away. 50 plus one
31:55is 50. 50 plus one, 51. Three, fours are 12. Yes. Multiplying both together. 612. Six minus five is one.
32:03And add it on. Yeah. And that's why you're an opto champ. Well done. Well done. Yeah.
32:06Excellent. Excellent. Excellent. Excellent. Well done, Tracy. Here we are. Final round, then. Tracy and Wendy, fingers on buzzers. Let's
32:16reveal today's countdown conundrum.
32:50Well, well, Tracey Mills, stumped up here.
32:56Who in the audience will give us a rough estimation?
33:00Yes, sir?
33:00Is it disbelief, Nick?
33:03Let's see whether you're right.
33:05Disbelief.
33:06Disbelief, indeed.
33:08Well done.
33:11Very good, indeed.
33:12Well done.
33:13So, well done, Tracey.
33:15You're an octochamp.
33:16And Wendy, bad luck to come up against an octochamp.
33:19That's all I can say.
33:20I wish I could change places of Rachel at times and just put the letters up on the board.
33:25You know, well done for that.
33:26And I'm full of admiration for your scuba diving off Scupper Flow.
33:31Fantastic.
33:32And we'll take your goodie bag with you, will you?
33:34Thank you very much.
33:35Brilliant stuff.
33:36Now, young lady, we shall see you in June in the finals.
33:39So, well done.
33:40Thank you, Nick.
33:41Well done.
33:41Great score.
33:41So, we shall see you on Monday, Susie, but the tragedy is that Helen Skelton will not
33:48be here.
33:49So, we shall see you when you next come back, obviously, which won't be too far in the future,
33:54I trust.
33:54Yes.
33:55Thank you very much.
33:56Come back.

34:06A great footballer from Black in the Day.
