00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:32My, how things have changed in the 50-odd years since I left school when it comes to school trips.
00:38We didn't have any school trips.
00:40In fact, any spare moment they were sort of, you know, repairing the barbed wire to keep us in.
00:44Stop us from escaping.
00:45The thought of a school trip, Rachel, was out of the question.
00:48But nowadays, look at this.
00:50Some parties of older school children are exploring new countries and they're helping out the locals.
00:56So it's wonderful things that children are now asked to do during the holidays and what have you.
01:02Building mud homes in Zambia, apparently.
01:04Constructing toilet blocks and installing water systems in Tanzania.
01:08I think it's fantastic because it shows these youngsters a world that they wouldn't otherwise know anything about.
01:15And helping people in countries that are perhaps less well-off than we are.
01:19So I think it's fantastic.
01:20What did you get up to?
01:22Were they decent with you?
01:23School trips.
01:24We didn't have anything worthy.
01:25I remember a horrible one.
01:26We went to Frinton-on-Sea in April and it snowed.
01:29We were just looking at rocks and broins and all that kind of stuff.
01:32But my brother did some amazing ones because he's into animals and he did a zoology degree.
01:36He took himself off to all these places around the world.
01:39And I think one of them he did, he went and volunteered at Malaysia Zoo.
01:43And it was quite a few hours ahead.
01:44So my mum, one night, she got this call overnight and this voicemail saying,
01:48Am I insured against mandrill bites?
01:51Oh, no!
01:51So when she woke up to this message, she was in an absolute flap, absolute panic trying to get hold
01:55of him.
01:56And he just, he wanted to go in with the mandrill.
01:57He hadn't been bitten by a mandrill, which is a huge kind of monkey with massive teeth.
02:02Yeah.
02:03Yeah.
02:03So he had fun and you went to Frinton.
02:05Frinton.
02:06Good Lord.
02:07I remember there was a wonderful poster on the railway, in the railway carriages in the old days.
02:13It said, Harwich for the continent, Frinton for the incontinent.
02:19No comment.
02:20I was all right on that trip.
02:22All right, well done.
02:23Well done.
02:24Now, who's back with us, Rachel?
02:25We've got Antoinette Ryan's back from Neenon County Tip, returning after a great, great first win.
02:31107 points, Antoinette.
02:33Fantastic.
02:34You're joined by Tom Jordan, math student from London, originally from Jersey.
02:39Big guitar player, plays in bands, and he recently broke his wrist while crowd surfing at a gig.
02:45Now then, I've never been to a gig, and I've never crowd surfed, so you're going to tell me all
02:51about it now, quickly.
02:52Well, it's, well, it was like a heavy metal gig, and it's when you get on top of the crowd
02:56and you kind of get past to the front,
02:58but when I got to the front, there was no one there to catch me, so I kind of fell
03:02backwards like that.
03:03And broke the old wrist.
03:04How is it now?
03:05Yeah, it's okay now.
03:06I didn't actually notice until the morning that I'd broken it.
03:08Oh, right.
03:09But you can play the guitar again.
03:10Yeah, yeah.
03:10Big round of applause, then.
03:12Come on, Tom and Antoinette.
03:16And, of course, Susie over in the corner, joined once again by the wonderful Len Goodman, dancer, dance judge, coach,
03:22TV personality, and a good character.
03:25Welcome back.
03:26It's lovely to be here.
03:27And I've got to say, I'm very pleased with my dressing room.
03:30It's beautiful.
03:31They've thought of everything.
03:33Even got my initials on the television.
03:35LG.
03:36It's perfect.
03:39Well done.
03:39And you've got a bowl of fruit, too.
03:41A bowl of fruit and a Kit Kat.
03:42What more could you want?
03:43Life is complete, Len.
03:45Life's complete.
03:46Well done.
03:47Now, Antoinette, let's get down to business.

05:17Very good.
05:18More than one.
05:19Oh, yes.
05:20Go out for a couple of snifters.
05:21What is a snifter?
05:22It's just a little drink.
05:23Quiet, sneaky drink, isn't it?
05:24Just a little alcoholic drink.
05:27Yeah.

06:54Not the one to put your money on.
06:56Now then.
06:57Tom, you can also be unclamped.

14:08girl behind the tea bar and I used to halfway through the dance class you'd have a cup of tea
14:14or
14:15whatever and I was always trying to get her to come out and have a dance with me and eventually
14:20she succumbed and out she came and I it became a regular thing once a week I'd say fancy a
14:25dance
14:26and out we'd go her dad who taught in the studio above was a very famous ballroom dance teacher Henry
14:33Kingston
14:34and he saw me dancing with his daughter and he said do you know I think you've got potential
14:40I'll give you some lessons there'd be no charge because it's with her and see how you get on
14:46so that was how I really started to dance properly and I had to go in for my first competition
14:53was
14:54butlins novice of the year competition and you had to go to butlins and qualify then you went to the
15:01the where where where all the winners of all the different holiday camps went and if you got into the

16:15a year so I just yeah just got

25:38Well, I'm not sure if you've ever wondered this question, Nick, but many people do.
25:42Why do you say a pair of trousers?
25:45Why are they a pair?
25:46Okay.
25:47But there are lots of plural nouns in English which seem a bit odd.
25:51Tweezers, glasses, tongs, etc.
25:55In the case of tweezers, a tweeze used to be a special case that a surgeon would have and
26:01it would hold all his instruments for surgery.
26:04And soon all the contents of this case became known as tweezers.
26:08And part of the contents always was the little pair of pincers that we know as tweezers today.
26:14So, that's the history of that one.
26:15But all nether garments, if you like, have started off as plural.
26:19The first one was drawers.
26:21And then came pants.
26:23And pants, as I've often mentioned, that goes back to a Venetian character in Italian comedy called pantaloni.
26:29And he would always wear these incredibly tight, a bit like tights really, sort of multicoloured trousers.
26:37And over time pantaloons became shortened to pants.
26:41And, of course, over here they mean something very different.
26:43In America they are trousers.
26:45But otherwise you've got breeches, you've got shorts, you've got tights, you've got tighty-whities.
26:50But to come to trousers, because that was the question, why a pair of trousers?
26:53Well, it started off with the Gaelic word, trowels, which became trues.
26:59We saw some of us talk about trues today.
27:01But the key to why is all about the tailoring.
27:05Because before the modern fashion, you would have what was essentially a piece of cloth that would be tied around
27:10your waist.
27:11And then you would have a strip of fabric that had to be literally wrapped around each leg.
27:16A little bit like cowboy chaps, I guess.
27:19And they took a very long time to put on.
27:21And it's not surprising that we ended up with the trousers that we have today.
27:24But that is why we have a pair of trousers.
27:25Because it was all to do with two bits of cloth that were separate and you would wrap them around
27:29your legs.
27:30Very good.
27:31Very good.
27:36Well done.
