00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio.
00:34Now, you may or may not know, and you may or may not care,
00:38that Margaret Mountford, my old pal and a regular guest over in Dictionary Corner,
00:44are in the throes of making a programme about the state of British railways.
00:49And we've been getting around.
00:50In fact, there are very few places where we haven't been.
00:53But there's one place that we will not be, is at King's Cross tonight,
00:57because it's press night for the production of The Railway Children at King's Cross Station in London.
01:03And it'll then be running to King's Cross until at least March the 1st.
01:08They've got a thousand-seater pop-up theatre there,
01:13added to which, in front of that stage, there is a 60-tonne steam locomotive and a carriage.
01:19Amazing.
01:21So there we are, theatre in a station. It's fun.
01:24Sounds like fun. Yeah, something different.
01:26Very different.
01:26Different to going to the pub on a Friday night.
01:28I'll tell you what's different as well.
01:29Two new contestants, because we said cheerio to Andy Noden yesterday when he became an octochamp.
01:35And we now welcome Andy Watts, an insurance account manager from the Wirral.
01:39Welcome, Andy.
01:41And you like building things, recycled materials.
01:43What have you been up to?
01:45What have you constructed?
01:46Well, some months ago, I bought 36 pallets and built a very large shed-cum garden room.
01:55It was designed for storage.
01:56I ended up putting a bar in there and a table and chairs.
02:01Yes.
02:02Well, good for you, Andy Watts.
02:03Now, you're joined by Josephine Sinclair, a London blue-badge tourist guide from Tunbridge.
02:10Favourite place in the whole world is Geisberg, a round hill above Salzburg, where she spent part of her honeymoon.
02:16And you can see it in the sound of music. Is that right?
02:18Yes, that's right.
02:19Wonderful. Good for you.
02:21Big round of applause, then, for Andy and Josephine Sinclair.
02:29And Susie, of course, and next to her is, once again, the wonderful David Emanuel, wonderful fashion designer, TV personality,
02:38and a good guy.
02:39Welcome back.
02:39Thank you, sir.
02:41Now, then, Andy, letters game. Good luck.
02:45Thanks, Nick.

04:17but there is a bit of a sneaky countdown rule
04:20that says,
04:21if you want to order this dish in a restaurant,
04:22you would probably say to the waiter or waitress,
04:25I will have two polentas, please.
04:28Well done.
04:28So it's absolutely fine.
04:29I will allow it for an eight.
04:32Well done there, Josephine.
04:34Good score.

25:23Well, well. Now, David, what have you got?
25:25I've got a seven with heroin.
25:28Yes. Heroin.
25:30Yeah.
25:3158 plays 34, but now we're back with you, Susie.
25:34We're back with you for your wonderful, educational, entertaining origins of words.
25:41Thank you, Nick.
25:42Well, I'm carrying on with the origins of some fabrics and textiles in honour of David.
25:47Uh, and I talked yesterday about how some words have come into English in pretty much the same state as,
25:53um, uh, they were in their native languages.
25:55Um, and particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries, these words came from the exotic Far East, um, and from
26:01Europe.
26:01And sometimes they were so exotic that, um, their names were very unfamiliar and they didn't trip lightly off the,
26:08um, English tongue.
26:09So, uh, so we changed them.
26:11And seersucker is a good example of that.
26:12That's the, the light fabric with the, the crimped surface.
26:16A strange name, seersucker, but it actually goes back to Persian, seersucker, which meant milk and sugar.
26:22Um, because seersucker was originally always striped.
26:25I don't know if it's still striped today, but.
26:26Yes, we can get it striped.
26:27We also can get it plain as well.
26:28Oh, okay.
26:29Yeah.
26:29So it was the idea of milk, sugar and milk, sugar.
26:31Um, and Britain also contributed words.
26:34So we didn't just take them, but we, we gave them to the rest of the world.
26:37And Manchester, Nottingham, uh, Bolton, Paisley, they all gave their names to fabrics that were exported.
26:42And Manchester in Australia and New Zealand and South Africa still means household linen.
26:47So if you're going to a department store in any one of those countries, you will ask for the Manchester
26:51department and you'll be taken to the linen department.
26:54Uh, and actually one, one last PS to this.
26:57There is, um, uh, a treasure trove of long lost textile names.
27:01And sadly, we don't know quite what this one was like, but I love the name of it.
27:03And it's Rum Swizzle from Ireland.
27:05Um, but there's a wonderful blog piece on the Oxford Dictionaries, uh, blog, um, which will give you a lot
27:10more detail.
27:11Uh, but I think they're, I think they're lovely.
27:13Excellent.
27:19Wonderful, lovely meander through the world of textiles.
27:22Thank you, Susie.
27:2358 to, uh, Andy's 34.
