00:30Well, good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio. It's time to pick up your trials and your brushes. Why?
00:36Because tomorrow is the start of the two-week Festival of Archaeology. It's a fortnight-long initiative coordinated by the
00:43Council for British Archaeology. It's encouraging everybody, particularly the young perhaps, to explore archaeology in their local area. Over 1
00:52,000 events will take place over the next couple of weeks right across the UK where you can see experts
00:58at work.
00:59Have I ever discovered anything whilst digging? Not really, but I did go to Egypt a few years ago and
01:05was blown away. I went to Karnak, the great temple at Karnak, and it's fantastic. And I went on my
01:11own down one of the steps right down into the tomb.
01:13Really? But all the paintings on the walls as you go down, but when you're alone and you suddenly think,
01:20oh, no, something could have dropped the stone door.
01:22You start hearing things.
01:23Yeah. How about you? Have you dug anything up interesting?
01:25No, I haven't. I've never been to Egypt, actually. I'd love to go. But in South End, where I'm from,
01:30they've found all kinds of Anglo-Saxon burial grounds, and they've found all these artefacts. It's one of the biggest
01:35burial tombs they've ever found, and hundreds of metal objects and all sorts of stuff.
01:40I think there's a pub called the Saxon King or something there now, making the most of it.
01:45Amazing. Amazing. Well, good luck on the Fortnite dig.
01:50Now, we haven't dug up Stephen Fuller, actually, because he was here yesterday.
01:54A three-time winner from Chinam, is that right?
01:57Chinam.
01:57In Basingstoke.
01:58Chinam.
01:58Chinam.
01:59Chinam. Brilliant. Father to Samantha, George, and Louis, and once performed at the 0-2 in the national final of
02:05an open mic competition.
02:06Now, what was all that about, Stephen?
02:08It was mainly pressure from friends. They said, you should go on this, you should go on that, do karaoke.
02:12After three or four rounds, I got through to the regional final down in Portsmouth, and I won that and
02:16got through to the national final at the 0-2.
02:18Well, if you've become an Octa-Champ, we may well ask you to step out onto our little stage here
02:22and give us a rendition of something or other.
02:25Maybe you can hum to the countdown tune, I don't know.
02:27But first of all, you've got to get past Andrew Cripps, a financial analyst from Wimbledon, another sportsman.
02:33He loves playing cricket, squash, and competing in triathlons.
02:37But what fascinates me is that the research department has dug up the fact that you spent some time in
02:42Sri Lanka living in a Buddhist monastery.
02:45Now, what was that like?
02:47Before university, I volunteered for an educational charity and spent a year in Sri Lanka teaching in a Buddhist monastery
02:54school.
02:55And teaching the student monks or the monks or what?
02:57Yeah, the small monks, yeah, while they were still training.
03:00Excellent stuff. All right, big round of applause then for Andrew and Stephen.
03:11And Susie, welcome back.
03:13And our great guest, a real favourite of the show, none other, of course, than Chris Packham, TV presenter, but
03:20wildlife expert by excellence, as we've said before.
03:24Welcome back.
03:25Welcome back.
03:25This book of yours, it's interesting, you see, because it's a book for youngsters, maybe, I don't know, up to
03:30the age of seven.
03:31But what's fascinating, and it's called Amazing Animal Journeys, it's a charming book for children.
03:37But you've slipped in a lot of science. That's clever.
03:41It's my vocation. I mean, I think most kids that have any interest in this subject, or any other subject,
03:46actually, they're tremendously absorbent.
03:47They love it, don't they?
03:48They do.
03:48Kids love facts.
03:50Good for you, Chris.
03:51Now then, Stephen Fuller, your letters go.

14:20And Stephen?
14:21Same way.
14:22There we go.
14:23Yeah.
14:24All right.
14:25And so it is that we turn to Rachel.
14:27Rachel, rescue us.
14:29A few ways for this one.
14:31You might kick yourselves if you say 5 plus 4 is 9.
14:35And then times that by 50 for 450.
14:38And then kicking into use with 14 to take away.
14:42There we go.
14:43Well done, Rachel.
14:46Well done indeed.
14:47And now we turn to Chris, Chris Packham.
14:50Chris, what are you going to talk to us about now?
14:53Well, we've been on birds this week and relative, you know, recent discoveries.
14:57And one thing that we thought about birds for a long time is that they had a very poor sense
15:01of taste.
15:02Now we have in our mouths about 10,000 taste buds.
15:07That's not a lot.
15:08It sounds a lot.
15:08But some species of fish, things like catfish, for instance, have 100,000 taste buds.
15:14But we've recently discovered that birds do indeed have taste buds inside their mouths as part of their beak and
15:21on their tongue.
15:21But only about 300 or 400.
15:23But they nevertheless can taste the same things that we can.
15:26And there were five essential tastes.
15:28Sweet, sour, salty, bitter and something called umami, which is meaty.
15:35So they can taste those.
15:37And obviously birds which are interested in sweet things, hummingbirds, sugarbirds, so on and so forth, they have evolved a
15:42greater, sweeter sense of taste.
15:44But what's really interesting is that penguins, which live, as you know, in the southern hemisphere, principally, but not all,
15:52in the colder parts of that hemisphere,
15:54have lost the ability to taste sweet, bitter and essentially umami, the meaty taste.
16:01And this is because the proteins that are required to work on the surface of the taste bud won't work
16:08where it's cold.
16:09So in fact, it's not only penguins that have lost the ability to taste these things.
16:12It's seals, dolphins and whales too.
16:15So the rather paradoxical thing is that when a penguin catches a fish, it can't taste the fish that it's
16:22eating.
16:22But where the bittersweet paradox really comes to a conclusion is that fish, on the other hand, have taste buds
16:30all over the outside of their body,
16:32particularly on their gills and in a line running down the sides of their body.
16:36And they can taste all five of those senses, sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami.
16:42So when a penguin is swallowing a fish live, which they do, it can't taste it, but the fish can
16:50taste the penguin swallowing it.
16:53Yeah, just for a couple of seconds before it goes down.
16:57Indeed, indeed.
16:57What a clever thing.
16:59Yeah.
16:59Thank you, Chris.
17:00Brilliant.
17:00That was wonderful.
17:05Oh, how funny.
17:06All right, Stephen, letters game.

25:46there
25:46for seven as well miscues do something yeah very good thank you 57 as i say to andrew's 53
25:53so let them rest for a second steven and andrew as we turn to susie and her wonderful origins of
26:00words
26:00what have you got for us today susie i have lots of gods and uh spirits which lie behind so
26:07many english words i've talked about them before on countdown fascinate uh meant to be uh literally
26:13captivated the idea was that you were entranced or enthralled to uh some sort of spirit fanatic
26:19likewise uh enthuse itself has got theos the god uh within it and a ventriloquist somebody who um was
26:27a talker from their stomach uh said to be possessed by a demon and somebody who who literally spoke
26:33from uh their stomach because the demon was was residing there um but two words that you really
26:39wouldn't put together that also have this idea of uh spirits behind them and that's genius and
26:45demon and i'll start with a genius genius in latin meant a good spirit an attendant spirit who looked
26:51after you a bit like a guardian angel really in christian uh theology uh from it we get genial
26:57uh and genie of course the same idea of um of a spirit who would help you out uh in
27:04certain
27:04situations um but it comes from a very old word meaning to beget or to give birth to uh so
27:11it's
27:11rooted in very very ancient beliefs and a demon when it first set out uh in ancient greek was also
27:18a very
27:18good spirit uh somebody who again looked after you and it wasn't until demonology came about again
27:25sort of christian theology but lots of other religions as well that it took on the idea of
27:29a fallen angel uh so one who'd fallen from the grace of god and had sided with the the devil
27:35it's always been a surprise to me that geniuses and demons are so intricately linked in language
27:40at least and as i say they were originally both very very good things very good thank you
27:49thank you susie thank you susie now 57 to andrew's 53 andrew's lost the lead maybe now you can

31:16A subdivision of a Roman legion in the Christian church can be a vestment worn by a priest celebrating
31:22Eucharist.
31:23It's the strip of cloth that hangs down from the arm.
31:25That's a maniple.
31:26Yeah.
31:27Indeed.
31:28Well done, Susie.
31:2973 to 53.
31:30Oh, Stephen's run away now.
31:33Andrew, it's a numbers game.
31:34Six more, please, Rachel.
31:35Six more.
31:36He's gambling.
31:37That's what we all wanted to hear.
31:38Six little ones for the last one of the week.
31:40And these numbers are five, two, seven, eight, three, and nine.
31:50And the target, 290.
31:53Two, nine, zero.
31:54Two, nine, zero.
31:59And the target.
31:59Two, nine.
32:16Two, nine, zero.
32:17Two, nine, zero.
32:19Two, nine, zero.
32:26Stephen?
32:27No.
32:28And Andrew?
32:29Yeah, 290.
32:30Let's go, Andrew.
32:327 out of 3 is 10.
32:347 out of 3, 10.
32:368 fives are 40.
32:38Yep.
32:39Minus the 9 minus the 2 is 29.
32:42It is 29.
32:42And times the 2 together.
32:43And you're still in it.
32:44Good gamble.
32:45Well done.
32:49You carved back a chance there.
32:51Just 10 points in it now.
32:5363 to 73.
32:55Which takes us to the final round.
32:56Conundrum time.
32:57Crucial conundrum time.
32:59Let's roll that crucial conundrum.
33:09Stephen?
33:10Unwatered.
33:11Unwatered.
33:12Let's see whether you're right.
33:14You're so good at this.
33:16Unwatered.
33:16There you go.
33:24Well done, Stephen.
33:26Well done.
33:26Well done indeed.
33:27Four wins on your belt now.
33:29Well done indeed.
33:30Andrew, bad luck.
33:31Because you had him there.
33:32Yep.
33:33And then he's cruised past.
33:35You fought back into a crucial conundrum.
33:38And he pipped you at the post.
33:41So well done.
33:41You played brilliantly well.
33:43And back to Wimbledon with you.
33:46And take this goodie bag with you.
33:47And our very best wishes.
