00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:34Now, whether you like flying or not, I guess many of us gravitate towards the window wide
00:39so that we can look out and see those extraordinary sights that you can see from on high.
00:44Oceans, mountains, deserts, cities, and impressive cloud formations too.
00:50I've got to tell you that I read recently that clouds are made up of tiny water droplets and ice
00:57crystals.
00:57Nothing surprising there.
00:58And when full, Rachel, this will stagger you.
01:02Some, it's been reported, could apparently weigh as much as 6,000 blue whales.
01:09Now, I think the research department's been drinking.
01:12What a very strange measurement of weight.
01:14Wow.
01:15But something to think about.
01:16Now, what's the most interesting view I've ever seen?
01:21And it's an odd one, actually.
01:23It was the desert.
01:24And I flew over two big deserts.
01:27I was absolutely mesmerized by it.
01:30And I was surprised to be so mesmerized.
01:32Where was that?
01:32One was over the Kazakh desert.
01:35I, in fact, flew over that for hours in a ropey Russian helicopter, holding the hand of an attractive woman.
01:45And that actually allowed me to assuage the fear that would otherwise have overwhelmed me.
01:55Okay.
01:55So you were more scared than the lady?
01:57She was terrified.
01:59I was comforting her.
02:00Oh, right.
02:01Very manly of you.
02:02I was comforting Syrah Khan as we flew over the Kazakh desert.
02:09Wonderful.
02:09Now, who have we got?
02:10We've got a very wonderful young woman called Tracy Mills who saw off a very good player yesterday, Neil Stevenson.
02:19And that was a good contest, really, because you were trailing.
02:23And then you crept up on him, didn't you?
02:26Slowly, yes.
02:27Slowly, but inexorably.
02:28And took the win.
02:30So you're going for back-to-back winners today.
02:32Yep.
02:32But not if Sean Chenery has got anything to do with it.
02:36And Sean is a house sitter and a pet minder from Lime Regis in Dorset, lovely part of the country.
02:41It is.
02:42Jurassic Coastline.
02:43You used to be in the recording business as an engineer in the music business, is that right?
02:48Yep.
02:48And you once upon a time were nominated for a Grammy.
02:52Who was that for?
02:53With Seal.
02:54Oh, yes.
02:55His second album.
02:57Big singer, he's there.
02:58Yeah.
02:58Absolutely.
02:59Let's have a big round of applause, then, for Sean and Tracy Mills.
03:10And over in the corner, on this Thursday, Thursday afternoon, we have, of course, Susie Dent, and once again, the
03:18wonderful Tim Wanacott of Bargain Hunter fame.
03:22Great to have you.
03:23And tomorrow, it's our last day.
03:25But before you go, when we have a great guest, we make them sign the deal, whereby they'll come back
03:30again.
03:31Ooh.
03:32How lovely.
03:32Now you're talking my language.
03:33All right.

10:12It's not there as an adjective.
10:13Sorry, Sean.
10:14Bad luck, but brave try.
10:16But what have we got in the corner, then?
10:18There's Bastide, a country house in France.

12:00which is an insect-eating
12:02Mammal yeah with a long snout of claws that you'll find in Australia and there's cyanide
12:08Yes, our old friend side nine. Yes smells of almonds, you know it's almonds all right
12:1337 plays seven and now Sean it's your numbers game
12:18Two large four small please. Thank you, Sean two from the top row and four little ones coming up for
12:23you
12:23And for this round the small numbers are one three
12:27Six and ten and the large two fifty and seventy-five a nicely ascending order and the target six hundred
12:34and thirty three six three three
13:06I'm sure I'm afraid sorry too far. How about Tracy six four three six four three
13:14Ten plus three is thirteen ten plus three thirteen multiplied by fifty multiply fifty six hundred and fifty six plus
13:22one is seven and take it off
13:23Yep, for ten away six four three just squeeze in there Tracy, but six three three. I'm sure Rachel can
13:30Improve on that. Yes. He could have said fifty times seventy five is
13:36Three thousand seven hundred and fifty divided by six is six hundred and twenty-five and then ten minus three
13:43add one is eight to add on for six three three well done
13:50So Tracy forty two Sean on seven, but plenty of time as we turn to Tim and Tim you appeared
13:57on strictly come dancing at the end of last year. How
14:00amazing
14:02Stroke exhausting stroke terrifying was that well all of those things in what they call spades really?
14:09For a non dancer. I mean, I'm looking at rates because did you come from a dancing?
14:14We were in it together with no dance experience
14:17Which is which is a starting point which is a scary place? I have to say and you really work
14:23hard
14:23Yeah, and funnily enough. It's not a penance once you're in the thing
14:27You're so happy to be in this bubble and with this lovely crowd of people
14:31You really want to work hard for your partner and you want to work hard obviously for yourself
14:36But you know it's just getting towards the next dance
14:38Can I get to the American smooth or can I go and do the Paso de Blay or whatever it
14:43is and it's just
14:44An amazing thing that some of the beastly judges of course aren't that kind and when Craig said to me
14:51that you dance
14:51as if you've got two soiled nappies on I
14:55Did find that slightly difficult to take as an older man being referred to as a dancer with two soiled
15:01nappies
15:01Just wasn't the the nicest thing, but and once you kind of grip the pantomime piece of it and aren't
15:08offended by such a
15:10Gibe I mean I did say immediately afterwards that was rather below the belt which I thought was um
15:15Correct retort to a nap to a nappy
15:19Yeah, anyway, of course. I'm heading towards this time when one will have to wear that
15:28What a terrible thought what only clean ones please
15:34Thank you very much, Jim. Thank you so much. Now then where shall we
15:38Which we go now Tracy? How about letters game can I have a constant please Rachel? Thank you Tracy L

17:08Nertards soiled or not
17:10Oh dear
17:12And there's also another nine there steroidal
17:16Steroidal

19:04And the large one, 50.
19:06And the target, 875.

19:54multiply them both together for 867 and plus the 10 and 877 yep to above to
20:02above can we take two off it somehow we can if you say 50 times 9 is 450 minus
20:11eight four four four two times by two four eight eight four and then take the
20:18one the 10 and add the one
20:26so time for a tea time teaser which is Bert's lot and the clue Bert's lot had no
20:33mental strength whatsoever Bert's lot had no mental strength whatsoever
20:53welcome back I left with the clue Bert's lot had no mental strength whatsoever why because they
20:59were bottlers bottlers now how did bottlers creep into the language meaning you know no courage
21:07walked away from the problem well yes because you're about bottling it exactly well in rhyming
21:13slang cotton in rhyming slang bottle was short for your backside so it was bottle and glass and you
21:20can okay fill in the rest and that's where the idea of not having any backbone if you like it's
21:27a little
21:27bit lower down how interesting 73 Sean's 13 and we'll turn now to Sean for letters game constant
21:34and a final vowel please Rachel thank you Sean C and another S and one more R vowel E and
21:47another A and one more O consonant T consonant S and a final vowel please and a final I

23:19one oh a vowel please see another vowel I another vowel oh a consonant please F
23:33another consonant G and a final constant place and a final M stand by
23:43so
23:47so
24:12yes Tracy five five and Sean
24:16risky six fine Tracy hiker a hiker now Sean homia homia homia homia okay well we
24:29talk about something being homie which isn't a synonym for homely it is there
24:34yeah homia exactly same as homely comfortable and cozy good man well done
24:40Sean well done very good so that takes up to 19 as we turn to Susie and her
24:47wonderful origins of words and today Susie well I'm staying with wartime it was I've
24:56been talking about the vocabulary of war this week I'm going to talk a little bit
24:59about food and the food particularly that was available and popular during World War two and I've talked a lot
25:06on the program about spam and I mention it often
25:09thanks to the great Monty Python flying circus sketch and the fact that it was
25:16everywhere and accounts for the fact that we use spam today for all the junk mail that
25:20sort of washes around cyberspace spam was the blend of course of spiced and ham is
25:25introduced in 1937 and incredibly popular it started off in Austin Minnesota which has
25:32been dubbed spam town USA and you can probably imagine thanks it's very long shelf life military
25:38authorities absolutely loved it and it was for the protein as well tasty or not and when
25:43it's first introduced to Britain it was pronounced to be an oasis in our desert of
25:48mediocrity and apparently another little bit research into this is it's one of the
25:53most enjoyed foods in South Korea and it's actually a bit of a status symbol so you can
26:00get classic spam bacon spam mild spam garlic spam you can get spam gift sets which
26:06really made me laugh and the slogan goes if you've got spam you've got it all
26:13so yeah so it's still there but another food heavily promoted by the Ministry of Food during
26:18World War two was the carrot in plentiful supply thanks to the land armies and you can get
26:24curried carrots carrot marmalade and carrot aid which was a sort of like a carrot juice
26:29but with a bit of fizz I think and the cartoon figure doctor carrot was invented to encourage
26:34kids to and to eat and they even put the rumor around that nighttime bombers were far more successful
26:40when they ate carrots because they could see in the dark thanks to the vitamin A and finally lots of
26:46innovations with alcohol as well as you might expect and the story goes that the survivor of a bomb blast
26:51asked the barman at London's Berkeley Hotel for something with a sting to cheer him up a bit and he
26:57was
26:57presented with brandy and creme de mousse which was then the Berkeley stinger after that the Berkeley
27:03stinger and one to avoid was the US Navy's preparation made from the alcohol that was used in torpedo
27:10motors and it was called torpedo juice but apparently quite popular during the war well well well
27:16well how extraordinary very good of course people like Tim and I of our sort of age you know always
27:26fascinated by the war you know but the carrots and seeing in the dark that was a terribly sort of
27:32you
27:32know yeah was really well regarded thing was it was on trend wasn't it absolutely when we were kiddiewids I
27:38can
27:38remember the advertisement don't eat ham eat spam where you were they were trying to actively encourage you from
27:44going from the good stuff to the bad stuff very good very good 81 to 19 Tracy looking indomitable here
27:54as we move to
27:55fun on you Sean Sean Sean
27:56P mike

28:21A
28:22and the final Consonant place
28:24and a final S
28:25And here's the countdown clock.

29:00A six.
29:01Seven.
29:02And a seven.
29:03Sean.
29:03Learned.
29:04Learned and?
29:05Treason.
29:07Treason.
29:09Happy enough?
29:10Very happy.
29:10I've just learned that treason and tradition are linked because it's all to do with handing
29:14over.
29:14So you either hand over somebody, betray them to the authorities, and traditions are handed
29:18down from generation to generation.
29:20Really?
29:21Hmm.
29:21And Tim, what news?
29:22How about antlers?
29:23Nice.
29:24I'm very happy with that.
29:25Yeah.
29:26Very happy.
29:27All right.
29:27And so we move on to the final letters game today.

32:00six four
32:01multiplied by the 75 300 8 plus 6 is 40 but it all up did you decide 315 8 plus
32:107
32:10sorry 8 plus 7 yes 15 and they all look yeah one away very good but still one
32:17away 314 is that a puzzler you could have said 7 times 5 is 35 75 minus 35 is 40
32:28times by 8 for 320 and take away the six for 314 there we go well done thank you Rachel
32:36thank you Rachel indeed and now 101 for uh Tracy Sean and 25 so fingers on buzzers then Tracy and
