00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio.
00:34I read a very interesting article recently concerning rock star riders.
00:39Now, what is a rock star rider? I'll tell you.
00:41The Oxford Dictionary says a rider is a supplementary clause in a performer's contract specifying food, drink, etc. to be
00:48provided in the dressing room.
00:50And in the past, of course, riders were full of demands.
00:53I guess the most famous one, Rachel, was, and I don't know who it was, some nutter, specifying they must
00:58have Smarties in the dressing rooms, but only the blue ones.
01:02Oh, the M&M's, separated from...
01:03Was it M&M's?
01:04I think it was M&M's.
01:04Who was it? Can you remember?
01:05I've absolutely no idea. I wonder if it's an urban legend, if it was a real person.
01:08If it was a real person, then they're very spoiled.
01:11And they need a smack.
01:12Start it here first.
01:13Now, what would I have? I've got a rider, which is not a weenie rider, but I've got a computer
01:17and a printer in my room.
01:19Have you got anything special?
01:20You've got a computer and what are you printing? What are you doing?
01:23Whatever it is I need to print.
01:26I've got a business to run here.
01:28And if I were out on the road and I could have anything I wanted in the whole world, what
01:35would I have?
01:36You.
01:36More importantly, what would you have?
01:39I, well, instead of towels, you could have fluffy white kittens.
01:43I've heard people, I've heard rumours of things like that.
01:45I think it's always related to Mariah Carey.
01:48I wonder which ones are true.
01:49It's always, you know, I need this many roses cut to this exact length and this exact temperature in my
01:54room and water it from this country and all the rest of it.
01:57But anybody that makes silly demands actually deserves a smack, don't you think?
02:02Like a printer and a computer.
02:04No, that's very sensible.
02:05Now, who have we got with us?
02:06Andy Noden is back and this young man is determined to become an octa champ.
02:12He's on six wins, seven wins now actually.
02:14One more and you're there.
02:15Well done, Andy.
02:16You've played a blinder.
02:18But there's always somebody who pops up to steal your thunder.
02:23Will it be Mark Baynon, a financial advisor from Kingston on Thames, whose nickname is Peanuts?
02:29Now, I hope your clients don't get peanuts for all your financial advice.
02:34I'm sure they don't.
02:35Of course not, no.
02:35But why are you called peanuts?
02:36It's my lovely colleagues at work.
02:39Something to do with the shape of my head, apparently.
02:42I can see what they mean.
02:45I can see that, yeah.
02:46Brilliant stuff.
02:47And the most peaceful place you've ever been was tubing.
02:51This is new language to me.
02:52Down the river in Vang Dieng in Laos.
02:55What's tubing first of all?
02:57You have a kind of, yeah, rubber tube with the whole middle, so you're kind of like a donut.
03:01So you're just kind of sitting.
03:02Like the inner tube of a tractor or something?
03:04Yeah, exactly.
03:04Yeah, just like that.
03:05Oh, OK.
03:05And you're kind of just sitting there, relaxing, and you're floating down the river.
03:10Absolutely.
03:11So peaceful, so quiet.
03:12No, we're not a soul around.
03:13You're in the, yeah, you can see the mountains on either side.
03:15Do you know, I think you've given me an idea.
03:17I fancy a bit of that.
03:18I think you'll like it.
03:19Tubing.
03:20Absolutely.
03:20Let's have a big round of applause for Mark and Andy.
03:24APPLAUSE
03:28And in the corner, of course, Susie and, once again, David Emanuel, fashion designer,
03:34TV personality.
03:35And are you a tuber?
03:37I have been known to tube, yes.
03:39Yeah?
03:39Have you seriously done?
03:40I have seriously, yeah.
03:41Brilliant.
03:42All right.
03:43Let's have a letters game with Andy Noden.

08:58And the answer is floggers. A flogger. Susie, is that the same as a chugger? A charity mugger?
09:05Oh, it can be, yes. As well as somebody who whips, because it comes from the Latin flagellare,
09:09to whip, which is where we get flagellate from. Yeah, a chugger is a charity mugger, so somebody
09:14who tries to, yeah, a bit of an unpleasant one. And a flogger could also be a chugger.
09:18Somebody who tries to sell you something. Hard sell. To flog it. To flog it. To flog it.

12:24I had to spook for five.
12:26To spook a horse?
12:28Yes, and sadly the origin's unknown.
12:30I thought it might have a nice story behind it, but we don't know.
12:32All right.

12:35Numbers are up again, Mark.

13:5750 plus 75 plus 2, 127.
14:00Times 7.
14:01Perfect.
14:018, 8, 9 again.
14:03Well done, both of you.
14:07Still quite close, Ryan, but now we turn to David.
14:10And, David, I suppose if we all close our eyes and visualise Diana's wedding dress,
14:17we can all do it.
14:18We can all do it.
14:19And that was one of your great triumphs.
14:20But it wasn't the only wedding dress that you were involved with.
14:23Now, I've designed several brides, but one bride in particular was quite different.
14:29She was new.
14:30She'd never had something made.
14:31She had never had a couture service.
14:33She rang my assistant and an appointment was made.
14:36She came in and she said, you're getting married.
14:39I said, marvellous.
14:40So, do you have a theme?
14:41No.
14:42OK.
14:43Any particular colour?
14:45No.
14:47What about the venue?
14:50We haven't decided yet.
14:51Haven't decided.
14:51There's a lot of indecision.
14:53So, I'm kind of designing blind, as it were.
14:56Because, you know, you can get married absolutely anywhere these days.
14:58So, I said, OK.
14:59So, she went off.
15:00I obviously prepared sketches.
15:02She came in.
15:02I went through the sketches.
15:04And she said, oh, that one.
15:05And I said, well, have you made your mind up yet?
15:09You know, time is marching.
15:10Have you made your mind up yet about the venue?
15:12No, not yet.
15:13OK.
15:15Music.
15:16Any music you have in mind?
15:17No.
15:18No, not yet.
15:19I said, well, where is this going?
15:20So, I said, well, look, I can finish the gown.
15:23But have I got a deadline?
15:24What date?
15:26Um, no.
15:28I said, well, what?
15:30What?
15:31Oh, I haven't got a man.
15:33Didn't have a groom.
15:34There was no groom to be.
15:36That's true.
15:36Yeah.
15:36So, she wanted.
15:37So, I said, why do you want the gown?
15:39Oh, it's an investment.
15:39I want to buy it now.
15:40So, by the time I got married, by the time I get married, my prices will have gone up.
15:46So, she got the gown.
15:48And stuck it in a cupboard.
15:49Absolutely.
15:50I hope she, I never heard from a guy, I don't know if she got married or not, but it
15:53was,
15:53that was quite bizarre.
15:55That's very odd, isn't it?
15:57You sometimes get them, Nick.
15:59My word.
16:00Don't do it, girls.
16:01Have the man first.
16:03What an extraordinary thing.
16:04It was very odd.
16:05There's a certain sort of business sense, isn't there?
16:07Oh, absolutely.
16:08She's in the future's business.
16:09Absolutely.
16:10She's thinking ahead.
16:11Yeah.
16:12In the future's business.
16:13Well, well, well.
16:13She doesn't want to be caught by inflation.
16:16Exactly, yeah.
16:17Well, she won't be caught by a man if she carries on like that.
16:19Brilliant stuff.
16:2046 plays marks 33.

24:32Andy seven a seven mark just a six and the six varies Andy private pretty good
24:41forward and what of the corner what news David I've got a seven private the
24:46same yeah these snap yep Susie very last minute it's got pirated there for seven
24:52pirated yes 83 plays marks 39 but now it's Susie's wonderful origins of words
25:02Susie at well I thought in honor of David I would look at the very rich
25:07vocabulary in English for textiles and fabrics and their beginnings we were
25:12talking about chiffon which is one of David's favorite fabrics and that comes
25:16from the French and strangely it meant chief meant rags so it's a real story of
25:21rags to riches expensive rags yes she obviously became a bit of a statue symbol
25:26but from this 16th well 16th 17th and 18th centuries and indeed beyond there was a
25:34massive influx of beautiful fabrics both from Europe and the middle and far east
25:40and many of these all the garments that were made from them bore the the
25:45recognizable name of the place where they came from so Jersey was originally the
25:50name given to stockings and cloth items produced in Jersey then it became a sort
25:55of knitted tunic until it became a sort of sweater that we know today and Guernsey
25:59traveled a very similar route a Guernsey frock or coat obviously the cloth was first
26:04made in Guernsey damask that was originally a really rich silk fabric and
26:09woven with all sorts of very elaborate designs and later a very thick linen which
26:14was often used at the table and that's still recognizable that came from the
26:18town of Damascus cashmere sort of anglicized the spelling a little bit but
26:24that is not too far removed from cashmere in the Himalayas where the soft wool
26:29shawls and the fabric were imported that was in the early 19th century and
26:34this calico which is an alteration of Calicut and that's in southern India and
26:38muslin came from Mosul which is now in northern Iraq so they have become made very
26:43very long journeys to get to the designers like David today
26:47wonderful
26:48but it's very exotic I love a vocabulary of fabrics
26:50very interesting
26:51thank you
26:54and I think although it's not a place but corduroy is corduroy
26:59yes there's we're not completely sure where that comes from but that's the that's the most
27:03likely one is from the king of the royal connection is that right David I didn't
27:07know I don't know yeah I'm learning it's wonderful yeah the request I do a few more
27:11tomorrow excellent well done thank you Susie 83 plays marks 39 and we turn to Mark for a

28:50That's the one.
28:50A rorty exhaust pipe.
28:52I was going to say, it's hardly ever ropey from you, Andy.
28:55Yes, rortier, rortiest, from rorty meaning boisterous and high-spirited.
