House Democrats overwhelmingly rejected a resolution condemning socialism Tuesday, but the vote exposed a surprising divide within the party.
The resolution passed 220-192, with only eight Democrats voting in favor alongside Republicans. But the measure reached the House floor only after Democrats Jared Golden and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez crossed party lines earlier in the day to help Republicans overcome a procedural hurdle.
Their decision reportedly caught House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries off guard. Jeffries and other Democratic leaders later described the move as a “significant breach of trust” and said they were seeking a serious response.
The resolution also backed election integrity and called for passage of the SAVE Act, another deeply divisive issue between the parties.
Republicans celebrated the vote as a chance to put Democrats on record over socialism, while Democrats dismissed it as a symbolic political exercise that does little to address everyday concerns such as rising prices.
The episode highlights growing tensions within Congress ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
