Democratic House Leader Hakeem Jeffries is criticizing Republicans over what he calls “unprecedented extremism” as the battle for the upcoming US midterm elections intensifies. Speaking about Democratic fundraising efforts, Jeffries argued that the American people recognize the impact of the Republican Party’s political agenda.
With control of Congress at stake, both parties are working to strengthen their fundraising operations, mobilize supporters, and gain an advantage ahead of the midterms. Jeffries’ remarks highlight the growing political divide in Washington and the escalating fight between Democrats and Republicans.

00:00Senator Jeffries, if you don't mind, Speaker Johnson has been touting this week a record-breaking fundraising cycle for him
00:06and different GOP groups out of the midterms, but the shift in polls keep leaning towards Democrats. Why do you
00:12think we're seeing those favors in polls towards the DNC, and are you worried about this gap affecting the Democratic
00:17Party?
00:18Well, what's interesting is that cycle-to-date, House Democrats have actually outraised the Republican Campaign Committee, and affiliated groups
00:30that are working hard for us to take back control of the House have had a record-breaking cycle.
00:36Because of the fact that the American people recognize that Republicans have unleashed unprecedented extremism, the country hasn't gotten more
00:46affordable, it's gotten more expensive.
00:48Republicans have thrown us into this reckless and costly war of choice that, in a majority, with Bob Harvey as
00:55a member of Congress, Madeline Dean continuing to fight hard, we need to end this war for the sake of
01:01the American people and for the good of our own national security.
01:04And as a result of these things, we're 24 days away from taking back control of the House, because the
01:11American people want us to end this national nightmare.
01:14Welcome to the Shirley Chisholm State Office Brooklyn, here, State Office Building here in Brooklyn.
01:21It's an honor and a privilege to represent this area, and to represent a district that Shirley Chisholm once represented
01:29here in Brooklyn in large measure.
01:33And the late, great Shirley Chisholm was a champion for making life more affordable for the people of Brooklyn, New
01:43York City, and all across the country.
01:46Fortunately, I think Shirley Chisholm would be horrified by what she's seen and what has unfolded here in the United
01:56States of America under Donald Trump and Republican control of Congress.
02:03Donald Trump promised that costs here in the United States of America would go down on day one.
02:11But costs haven't gone down, costs have gone up.
02:15Life has become way too expensive as a direct result of policy decisions made by Donald Trump and the Republican
02:24-controlled Congress.
02:27The Trump tariffs have increased costs on everyday Americans by thousands of dollars per year.
02:34House Democrats will continue to strongly oppose those tariffs and to fight to roll them back.
02:44Donald Trump promised to love and cherish Medicaid.
02:49He then signed the Republican one big, ugly bill that enacted the largest cut to Medicaid in American history, ripping
02:59health care away.
03:01From people here in New York City, across New York State, and throughout America.
03:09Donald Trump and Republicans refused to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits.
03:14And as a result, tens of millions of people are experiencing, including right here in New York City, dramatically increased
03:27premiums, co-pays, and deductibles, in some cases increasing by more than $1,000 a month.
03:38These are everyday New Yorkers and everyday Americans who are no longer able to afford to go see a doctor
03:48when they need one because of decisions made by Donald Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress.
03:58Donald Trump promised not to start endless wars in the Middle East, but to stop them and then turned around
04:07and did the exact opposite by getting the country involved in a reckless and costly war of choice in Iran.
04:17That hasn't made our country any safer, but it certainly made the American people economically weaker, particularly as it relates
04:29to gas prices.
04:32House Democrats are uniformly and strongly opposed to Donald Trump's reckless and costly war of choice in Iran.
04:41And we will fight it every day until it comes to an end.
04:46We're fighting for an affordable America, and we're committed as House Democrats for the people here in New York City,
04:54across New York State, and throughout the country to lower the high cost of groceries, lower the high cost of
05:01gas, and lower the high cost of housing.
05:05Which is way too expensive, which is way too expensive, which is way too expensive all across this country.
05:10We're committed as House Democrats to fighting to make sure that health care is affordable for every single American.
05:20Because in this great country of ours, access to high quality and affordable health care shouldn't simply be a privilege
05:28available only to the wealthy, the well-off, and the well-connected.
05:32It should be a right available to every single New Yorker and every single American.
05:39And as House Democrats, finally, we are certainly committed to combating the unprecedented corruption that the Trump cartel continues to
05:52unleash on the American people.
05:55Every day brings a new revelation, including the most recent one related to the U.S. ambassador to Turkey.
06:05What we've seen from the Trump cartel is that they're more focused on enriching themselves, their family members, their friends,
06:14and their donors than they are with making life more affordable for the American people.
06:19And our promise to the country in the new Congress is that beginning on day one, we're going to hold
06:27the crooks accountable.
06:30Questions?
06:36You mentioned over the last few weeks that you and House Democrats are going to be running through the tape,
06:40that you all aren't taking anything for granted.
06:42I was hoping that you could kind of explain what does that look like practically as you're out on the
06:46road, as you're communicating with House Democrats and candidates.
06:49What does that look like with so much polling and so much momentum on your side?
06:57We're going to continue to be there for all of our battle tested frontline incumbent members who remain in challenging
07:10seats all across the country.
07:12We've got to make sure that they're reelected and that they have the resources necessary to communicate their vision in
07:20fighting for an affordable America.
07:21And we certainly will continue to be there for the growing number of our red to blue candidates who are
07:30strongly positioned to flip seats throughout America.
07:35And I myself will be on the road, certainly over the next few days, and I expect to be in
07:40places like New Jersey and Pennsylvania, down in Florida, in Texas, in the Midwest, and possibly back out to California
07:51where I was just at this weekend.
07:53And again, it's all hands on deck to make sure that we don't take anything for granted.
08:00We certainly are on track to take back control of the House because the American people are fed up.
08:06They've had enough of MAGA extremism.
08:10Donald Trump and Republicans have left behind a graveyard of broken promises and hurt the American people.
08:17And we actually believe that the American people want transformational and disruptive change.
08:24And that's exactly what House Democrats are going to deliver.
08:28If the election continues on its current trajectory, as you said, looks like Democrats are potentially on track to take
08:35back the House and possibly to control the Senate.
08:38But under that scenario, it seems likely the leadership of both houses would be New Yorkers.
08:44Are there ways in which New York and New York City specifically represent some of the problems that everyday Americans
08:52are facing under this administration?
08:55Are there ways in which that makes sense, that the leadership of both houses would be from the city of
09:01New York?
09:03Well, I'm a New Yorker second, but a Brooklynite first.
09:06And I think the good thing, the amazing thing about being from Brooklyn is that it is one of the
09:12most diverse places in the world.
09:16And we know that folks have come from all over the world to make it here, not just in New
09:20York City, but come to Brooklyn.
09:23To raise a family, to find a good paying job, to contribute to their community.
09:29And I represent one of the most diverse districts in the country in every possible way, race and religion, of
09:39course, gender, life experiences.
09:45And that's a wonderful thing.
09:47And what it has led me to conclude is that all of us in leadership have a responsibility to try
09:55to bring people together and to find the common ground that unites us and unites humanity in order to make
10:06progress for everyone.
10:08And what clearly unites the people that I'm privileged to represent, incredibly diverse group of folks, as is the case
10:17as I travel across America, whether that's in urban America, rural America, small town America, the heartland of America or
10:25black and brown communities throughout America,
10:27is a desire just to be able to live a comfortable life, an affordable life and a good life.
10:35And so what I've learned here in Brooklyn that hopefully I'll have the opportunity perhaps to apply in Washington when
10:43we're on the other side of this election is to fight to make sure that people can achieve that good
10:49life all over the country.
10:51Good paying job, good housing, good housing, good health care, a good education for your children, and then when it's
10:58all said and done, a good retirement.
11:01That's what the American people deserve.
11:03And that's not what they're experiencing right now as everyday Americans are drowning in this failed Trump Republican economy.
11:13I'd like to hear your thoughts on the heavy spending from Republicans on Long Island and how you're thinking about
11:19any potential tailwinds from Bruce Blakeman on Long Island specifically for those House Republican candidates.
11:25We're all in to make sure that both Tom Swasey and Laura Gillen are re-elected to Congress.
11:32They've both done a tremendous job representing the people of Nassau County, Long Island, as well as New York State,
11:39you know, and fighting to address the issues that matter,
11:42which include aggressively confronting the high cost of living, driving down taxes, and making sure that people can afford to
11:52live a comfortable life.
11:55The Republicans are desperately spending money in places all across the country, including in Long Island, in a fruitless effort
12:08to try to defeat Democratic incumbents,
12:12while at the same time leaving Republican-held seats increasingly vulnerable, including in the North Country of New York State.
12:22The mismanagement that we're seeing unfold on the other side of the aisle, particularly as it relates to MAGA, Inc.,
12:34perhaps should no longer surprise us given the fact that Donald Trump's top political operatives
12:41seem more concerned with enriching themselves based on recent revelations and campaigning in Eastern Europe as opposed to actually doing
12:54what they were at least hired to do,
12:58which is to try to hold off massive Democratic victories, which are coming on November 3rd.
13:06Do you think Blakeman will tell us on Long Island?
13:09Bruce Blakeman is a right-wing political hack who is a Trump sycophant.
13:18And the people of New York State, including the people of Nassau County, I believe, will reject that because they
13:28know that Donald Trump and Republican policies in this Congress have failed them.
13:33They failed the people of New York City, they failed the people of Long Island, they failed the people of
13:38the New York City suburbs in the Hudson Valley,
13:41and they certainly have failed the people of New York State, which is one of the reasons why a rural
13:47-based, farm-country-based seat in the North Country of New York
13:53is on the verge of being flipped by Blake Genderbine.
14:04Do you think that there's a potential pickup on the eastern end of Long Island in the sea where Chris
14:10Galland is running?
14:12And then I have a question about the GOP maps in Texas and Florida.
14:16Our focus right now on Long Island is to defend Tom Swasey and Laura Gillan.
14:22Do you still, on the, you had talked at some point earlier this year about the redistricting that Republicans were
14:33trying to do,
14:34but do you think that Republican efforts to redistrict and redraw the maps in Texas and Florida are, do you
14:39still think they're going to backfire?
14:40The Republican efforts to redraw maps in Texas and Florida as part of their extreme scheme to rig the midterm
14:49elections have failed.
14:52Under no circumstances are Republicans going to defeat Representative Henry Cuellar and Representative Vincente Gonzalez.
15:03And under no circumstances in Texas are they going to win five seats.
15:08They'd be fortunate if they get to three.
15:11And at this point, based on what's happening in the Rio Grande Valley, that appears increasingly unlikely.
15:18At the same period of time, Democrats will pick up, thanks to Governor Newsom and members of the California delegation
15:25and the leaders throughout the state of California,
15:27we will pick up five seats in California to offset what Republicans intended to happen in both Texas and in
15:39Florida.
15:39I will be down in Florida in a week or so, spending time with some of our incumbent members and
15:45perhaps some of our challenges.
15:47We have multiple opportunities in Florida and the governor's race is now even close because even the people of Florida
15:57have now apparently concluded,
15:59notwithstanding the presence of both Donald Trump and their so-called governor, that Republican policies have failed them.
16:08Life is way too expensive in Florida in the same way that it's way too expensive all across the country
16:15as a direct result of toxic Republican policies.
16:19We're going to do much better than expected in Texas, and we're going to do much better than expected in
16:25Florida.
16:26And as a result of that and a whole host of other things that will take place all across the
16:30country,
16:30we're going to take back control of the United States House on November 3rd.
16:34Last question.
16:35Do you have any reaction to the criticism that Mayor Maldonado received regarding his October 7th statement yesterday?
16:42Well, I haven't tracked that situation that closely.
16:45What I can say from my perspective, of course, and I issued my own statement, as I have over the
16:52last three years,
16:54and of course in Congress we're actively engaged in issues that are both domestic and foreign policy related.
17:03October 7th is a solemn, sober, and searing day for Jewish New Yorkers, for Jews across the country, and for
17:16Jews throughout the world.
17:18And it should remain that way, always and forever.
17:24I can say that I strongly support the development and construction of a monument to the victims of October 7th
17:37here in Brooklyn,
17:38as has been proposed in the southern part of the district that I'm privileged to represent.
18:05I can say that the American people are about to retire Mike Johnson and the Republican majority.
18:15in the House, and possibly even in the Senate.
18:20On the question of October 7th, the UN women's just come out and said 50,000 women and children in
18:28Gaza have been killed or wounded.
18:31You've held off on calling it a genocide.
18:33Meanwhile, Congress is considering $2.8 billion transfer of arms to Israel.
18:40What's your stance on all of this?
18:41Should the Democrats win the House and Senate,
18:46and where voters seem to be expressing support for the plight of people in Gaza and the West Bank?
18:53Well, I extensively laid out my position most recently in July to the caucus and by extension to the country.
19:05And it's anchored in two core principles.
19:08I think the importance of America continuing to support Israel's right to exist as a Jewish and democratic state living
19:17side by side in safety and security and peace and prosperity with a Palestinian state that can provide dignity and
19:28self-determination for the Palestinian people.
19:30We have to figure out, as we move forward, as a Congress and as a country, how to make those
19:39things happen for the good of everyone and authentically commit to a just and lasting peace.
19:48And I certainly will do my part to bring that about in the Middle East.
19:52Thank you, everyone.
