Still have faith Red Sox can win in The Bronx? Roman Anthony and Trevor Story returned to lineup. However... Red Sox lose 3 of 4 (and tiebreaker) over weekend. If playoffs are in NY, can the Red Sox win a series? Who has the pitching edge?
Transcript
00:00I may have bought too far into this team.
00:02I don't know.
00:03Listen, they are 98.5% playoff team.
00:0993.7.
00:1093.7, whatever the number is.
00:12100.6, whatever.
00:15So, no concern there.
00:17But, I mean, I don't know.
00:19You look at the way this series went.
00:21You look at the way the series went all season long.
00:25You still have faith that they can beat the Yankees down there?
00:28Wild card round?
00:29Curtis?
00:30Or does this make you pause?
00:32I hate to give Wiggy credit because he's, you know, he's just –
00:36he's usually arguing with me, so it means I'm wrong.
00:38But Wiggy might be right about this team.
00:40Like, that I said no matter what, it's a success
00:44and that they should remove the interim tag
00:46and they should give Tracy the job.
00:47And Wiggy said there's a chance that the –
00:50and you and Wiggy also said this –
00:51that the expectations have shifted
00:53and that there could be disappointment now.
00:55Because when they were awful, worst team ever,
00:57and then they go 32-5,
01:00I'm saying no matter what, this is all gravy.
01:02Like, this is unbelievable.
01:03But this weekend, undisciplined,
01:07the doubling – the Raffaella base running,
01:09ignoring the third base coach,
01:10and then getting doubled off first on a play
01:12that a little leaguer should get back to the base.
01:14The inability to hit, the way in which the roster –
01:17like, I think Breslow also had a bad weekend.
01:19I don't know why you don't bring up Roman Anthony.
01:21When the series started, he was waiting in Worcester.
01:25It was a very, very, very disappointing weekend,
01:28culminating in a really, really crummy umpire decision
01:30that cost you the game yesterday,
01:31or at least cost you a chance to win the game yesterday.
01:33I found the weekend to be all-around disheartening.
01:37And also, I hate the new Yankee Stadium.
01:39I hate it.
01:40There's no feel.
01:41There's no – like, it used to, like, come through the screen
01:44in a big game.
01:46Like, on Friday night, the Red Sox were down to their last strike,
01:49and you could see it was 1-0,
01:50and the stadium was – you know, everybody was standing.
01:53But it felt just totally – yeah.
01:57Like, it doesn't have that big-game feel.
01:59Also, I agree with Lou.
02:02Jazz Chisholm stealing second and third
02:04in the eighth of a six-run game.
02:07Yeah, pathetic.
02:08Bush League.
02:08Total Bush League.
02:09Bush League.
02:10I would drill his ass next year.
02:12Same.
02:13Ear hole.
02:14Probably, you know, licking a lollipop
02:17the whole time he was doing it.
02:18Yeah, jazz hands.
02:19Yeah.
02:19See, I guess I would go with, like you said,
02:22the glass half-full type of guy.
02:24Because what was the last time –
02:27what happened the last time the Red Sox played the Yankees
02:29before this series?
02:31They swept them.
02:31Right.
02:32So, when you look at it –
02:33But they were at Fenway Park.
02:35All right.
02:35And I'll give you that.
02:36They had final at bat.
02:37I'll give you that.
02:38And I'm going to be the homer in the saying that in yesterday's game
02:44with the split, they got robbed.
02:47So, when you look at the wild card and you look at, okay,
02:53if they got to go to New York, can they beat New York in New York?
02:57I think they can.
02:59You know, and obviously they're going to have to not make some of those mistakes,
03:02not make some of the errors, not make – like you said, Curtis,
03:04not make some of the stupid base running errors.
03:07And then you're obviously going to need your bats to kind of show up here.
03:10So, I don't really –
03:12I know.
03:12You're not going to have Garrett Crochet.
03:14Right.
03:14But you haven't had him all year long, though.
03:16Okay.
03:16But that's the only game he won last year in the playoffs was the one he started.
03:20Right.
03:20But if you rolled out – if you rolled out Peyton –
03:25Sonny Gray.
03:26Sonny Gray is skipping his next start just as a heads up.
03:29Yeah, I understand that.
03:30Okay.
03:30That's concerning.
03:31So, like, unless we know why.
03:33But I'm just saying if he is healthy and good to go,
03:36if you roll him out and you roll out Peyton Tully,
03:39you feel pretty confident in those two guys, right?
03:42If you roll him out against the Yankees, you feel pretty confident with those two guys.
03:47And now, obviously, your bats just need to get going,
03:51which we've seen them be going all year – well, not all year long,
03:55but through that stretch, the second half of the season.
03:58So, I don't, like, instantly look and go,
04:00the Yankees are a much better team than them.
04:03I didn't say they were a much better team.
04:05Right.
04:05But I'm saying I think the Red Sox can go into New York and win that series.
04:08What concerns me is that these games were outside of yesterday,
04:11which turned into a laugher, were relatively close.
04:14And in close games, for some reason, on the road,
04:17you're a different team than you are at home.
04:19Oh, game one was a close game.
04:20I know.
04:20That's what I'm saying.
04:21Oh, okay.
04:22That's what I'm saying.
04:23And I would say yesterday was a close game until the umpires blew it.
04:27Exactly.
04:27Yeah, but then they got walloped.
04:29So, it's like –
04:29But then they walloped the Yankees.
04:32The last time that they played them.
04:34No, they walloped them 6-0.
04:35Well, that's a little bit – but that was on Saturday, not on Sunday.
04:39Right, right.
04:39But if you look at it –
04:41I would say 16-1 is a bit different.
04:43No, no, no.
04:44But I think at that point, Curtis –
04:45Don't gaslight my girl.
04:46Curtis, you know at that point, it's 0-0 on the fifth inning,
04:51and then all of a sudden there's this horrendous call,
04:53and it goes to 5-0,
04:54and then you know how the complete momentum mentality changes in the team.
04:58Josh Chisholm just stole home.
05:00Yeah, it's like – so, I look at that game.
05:02That game was on pace to be like, all right, who's going to win this game late in the game?
05:09It is amazing because I really don't know.
05:11It's September tomorrow, and I don't have an idea of what this team is.
05:17Like, I really don't.
05:17I don't – they could be – they could get hot again and roll into the ALCS.
05:22Well, yeah, forever you could count on pitching,
05:24and now I sit here and question, can you count on pitching?
05:28Like, what's the deal with Sonny Gray?
05:30What's the deal with Ranger Suarez?
05:33Like, what – I mean, I – you know.
05:35Right.
05:36I don't –
05:37But you have no idea.
05:38Can I also say, you're so right.
05:40Like, he did just gaslight me.
05:41Oh, totally.
05:42And that's why, in my head, I'm like –
05:43Well, we gaslighted you?
05:45Yeah, I'm like, I swear –
05:46When he's like, well, they – then they walloped them on Saturday,
05:49and in my head, I'm like, I thought they lost 16-1 yesterday.
05:51Maybe I'm wrong, and they only lost 6-1,
05:53and now I'm doing this internal battle inside my head.
05:56Well, yeah.
05:57No, no, the score was –
05:57Yeah, the score was 16.
05:58But I'm saying – I'm saying in the fifth inning of that critical game –
06:03See, the difference about baseball, it's not like other sports.
06:06One inning –
06:07Now he's talking down to you.
06:08No, no, no.
06:09No, but in one inning, a five-inning –
06:13like, a five-run inning can completely change the whole momentum –
06:17Greg calls it a crooked number.
06:18– of a game.
06:19Where in other sports, you don't see that.
06:22So, one play led to basically five runs in that inning.
06:26If that play is called right, it's a double play, we are now 0-0 headed into –
06:32it would have been the bottom of the fifth.
06:33So, what's your excuse for the other 11 runs?
06:36Nine of them came in, what, the eighth inning of the ninth?
06:38It was a big eighth inning.
06:39Yeah.
06:39At that point in time, you're down, what, 7-9 at that point?
06:42You had already checked – you had already checked out after that horrendous call.
06:47Yeah, I wouldn't throw Monasterio out on the bump again.
06:50No.
06:50I don't think.
06:51Unless there's a real emergency.
06:54Unless you have money on the other team.
06:57Curtis, other baseball guys, I don't know.
07:00Don't you think after that inning –
07:01Yes.
07:02– that the wind was completely taken out of this?
07:04It was totally – the way in which that game ended, I – was – it was irrelevant
07:09because the game ended in the fifth.
07:11When they got five runs in the bottom of the fifth, it was see you later.
07:13There was no chance the Sox were going to score.
07:14Right.
07:15Right.
