What happened with Duran and Contreras? Another Duran
Transcript
00:00Red Sox win the game and the series last night,
00:03and for the third or fourth time too many this season,
00:11Jaron Duran being a dink is the story of the night for the Boston Red Sox.
00:17And trade deadline is Monday.
00:19I don't know what the temperature is there for putting up with his antics,
00:25but enough is enough.
00:27So you got, was it top of the sixth?
00:31Sixth inning, yeah.
00:32Base hit by Duran, very infrequent.
00:35No, fly ball by Duran.
00:37I'm sorry, fly ball by Duran, runner on third, doesn't get sent home.
00:40It would have been a dead duck at home plate if they had sent him.
00:43Wilson Contreras on third base and wisely doesn't tag up.
00:48And Jaron Duran going back to the dugout is yelling run
00:52and gesturing over there at Wilson Contreras.
00:55Showing him up.
00:55And Chad Epperson and continues mouthing off and yelling in the dugout afterwards.
01:03Like, enough.
01:03What?
01:04Like, you're forgetting the big retaliation in the eighth,
01:06where Duran usually does the wally head when Contreras hit the home run
01:11and he refused to get the wally head and put it on him.
01:15Contreras after the game was very political in his answer.
01:18But is there ever been a candidate for addition by subtraction better than Jaron Duran?
01:25No.
01:25A guy that is just like, say what you will about Nomar back in the day.
01:28He was kind of petulant.
01:29He was not.
01:30But he was sort of just his own island.
01:33Duran sucks and sucks the life out of how much time has everybody spent this season
01:39answering questions about Jaron Duran.
01:43Like, I just don't get it.
01:45I don't understand.
01:46I mean...
01:46We've all dealt with that person at work.
01:49It's the jackass who makes it all about themselves.
01:54And it just is...
01:57It's tiring.
01:58It's like enough...
01:59Like, so far this season, he's had a couple...
02:04Two incidents yelling at fans.
02:06Am I correct about that?
02:06I mean, far more that we know about.
02:08That we know about.
02:09There are several out there.
02:10Yes.
02:12It's over and over and over again with him.
02:14And his batting average remains under 200.
02:18Like, get rid of him.
02:19And I think the worst part about it, like, yeah, when he was yelling in the dugout,
02:22it was laughable.
02:23But then you look at Contreras and his face when he comes into the dugout,
02:27he's looking at him like, what the F is going on?
02:30And this team has such synergy right now, if you want to use that word.
02:34You don't want anything to F with it.
02:36Like, that's where my head would be at when it comes close to the trade deadline.
02:39It's like, I don't want...
02:41And I hate using the word, like, a cancer in the clubhouse.
02:44And that seems like it could be.
02:46Yeah.
02:47I mean, he is the definition of a guy that is far more of a pain in the ass
02:52than he does anything positive to help the team win.
02:54And he is constantly, whether it's to a fan, to a teammate,
02:58he's breaking bats, he's miserable when the team's winning games.
03:02Like, I just...
03:03Wilson Contreras is everything you want this team to be.
03:05He's the leader of the franchise going forward.
03:07Jaron Duran is everything you want people not to be.
03:10And if your other thing is, is that if you're working on a culture
03:12with the young guys, do you want Roman Anthony around a guy like this?
03:16Do you want the guys that are going to be coming up in the next, you know,
03:19generation of Red Sox players to be playing with Jaron Duran?
03:21Some good news on Roman Anthony yesterday, and he is hitting the ball off of a tee,
03:26so there's a little progress that's being made there.
03:28T-ball is back in Fort Myers?
03:30I can't wait.
03:31I don't know.
03:32Like, you can mathematically try to guess when he might be back.
03:38You could backwards math at Curtis, but maybe September 1st by the time he...
03:44You know, it's going to be another week down there as long as he doesn't have a setback.
03:48And then you've got to get him 50 at-bats rehab-wise, probably.
03:54I would say if Roman Anthony could be on the roster for the playoffs,
03:59which is crazy to say that that's an expectation, but it is an expectation.
04:02This team's going to the playoffs now.
04:04That...
04:04What a perfect way to end a season that began in the World Baseball Classic.
04:09Here's your opportunity, Roman.
04:10We'll all forget about the year.
04:12We've got Cora.
04:12We've got Tracy.
04:13We've got Chaos.
04:14We've got everything going on.
04:15We've got all the rumors out there.
04:16Just hit for the next month or three weeks, and everybody forgets it,
04:20and you're Roman Anthony again.
04:22Like, it's...
04:22That, to me, is if I'm the organization, I'm slow playing it.
04:26I'm saying we're going to see how he goes.
04:27What Breslow said, he said yesterday with us, that he's not anticipating
04:30that the deadline will not be reliant upon a return.
04:33What they do by Monday will not be reliant upon Roman Anthony's return.
04:36That they're going to act as though he won't be here
04:38because they need to build a roster that's capable of winning despite the injury
04:42because they don't know when he'll be back.
04:43So, if I'm the Red Sox, slow play it, the opposite of the way you first handled
04:47this whole thing.
04:48Yeah.
04:48Get him back to Boston at some point and figure it out from there.
04:51But if you're a Red Sox fan, there's no rush.
04:54Like, you just...
04:55No.
04:55If you want to have a chance at really having a big dent in the playoffs,
04:58you need a healthy Roman Anthony.
05:00Hopefully, by Monday at 6, Jaron Duran's somewhere else,
05:03and then you can figure it out from there.
05:04No, the only thing that the Red Sox need to rush
05:07is getting the Roid Rager out of here and on another baseball team
05:12as soon as possible.
05:13That's it.
05:14Yep.
05:14That is...
05:15That would be my number one goal between now and Monday.
05:18Yeah.
05:18Get that guy out of here.
05:19I do think that they need to play it safe, though, with him
05:21because there has been such a conversation about his mental health
05:24and everything that he's gone through.
05:26Like, if you're the Red Sox organization,
05:27there is some type of line that you need to make sure you don't step over.
05:32Like, I think that a lot...
05:33What do you mean?
05:34What do I mean?
05:35Yeah, what do you mean?
05:36Last season, all we talked about was Jaron Duran's mental health.
05:39Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:39But what do you mean they need to play it safe?
05:41I don't think that talking about Roid Rage and stuff,
05:44if you're the Red Sox, like,
05:45I think that they need to make sure that he is okay.
05:47Like, they made such a big conversation point
05:50to circle around supporting Jaron Duran last season.
05:54Now, if he's out, he's acting out,
05:57they need to make sure that he mentally is okay before they...
06:00What does a mental health struggle that he's had
06:04have to do with yelling at a teammate
06:06for no valid reason whatsoever?
06:09Listen, I'm on your side when it comes to that.
06:11I just said that, but I'm saying...
06:12No, it sounds like you're making excuses for him.
06:14I'm not making excuses.
06:14I think that that's a big part of the conversation, though.
06:17If you look at this story,
06:18and you follow Jaron Duran since his first time
06:20playing in a Red Sox uniform,
06:22then that's been a topic of conversation.
06:24So, if we want to talk about Jaron Duran and his outbursts,
06:27that's also going to be brought into this.
06:29And if you think that it's not,
06:30and just people are going to think that he's an a-hole,
06:32then I think...
06:33I think most people think he's an a-hole.
06:35I think that the conversation is going to circle a lot
06:38about the mental health issues he's had in the past.
06:41Conversation from who?
06:42Him?
06:42I mean, who else is going to have that?
06:43There will be some people...
06:44I'm having it.
06:45But I would say this, though, Courtney.
06:47Like, as dealing with things,
06:50everybody has something in their life they're dealing with.
06:52And you don't get to supersede someone else's feelings
06:55because you have some else.
06:57I agree.
06:58And so, for me, like,
06:59you can't say that you are interested in mental health
07:02and then Tyler Milliken walks up to you to have a conversation
07:06and you call him a fat piece of S.
07:07Like, I'm sorry, you lose all right.
07:10So, you can say anything,
07:11but the reality is I believe he used it as a crutch.
07:15That whenever he's in trouble, it's like,
07:17oh, I hate myself.
07:19Oh, yeah, right.
07:20Oh, I'm sorry I did this because I'm dealing with things.
07:23Like, what does he have?
07:24I don't know what he has.
07:25What is the mental health?
07:26What is the diagnosis?
07:27Like, I've got a list of 16 things.
07:29I'll write them down.
07:29None of them give me the right to walk into Mike Thomas' office
07:32and take my pants off and tell him he's an a-hole.
07:34Like, you just can't do things like that.
