It’s even too hot to golf for Kane Brown, who is surviving the sweltering Nashville summer in part by visiting the cool studios of 'Katie & Company' above the Hard Rock Cafe. The singer joins Katie Neal this week for the 'Superstar Power Hour' to talk about his latest chart achievement, his bar on Broadway, and the artist who gave him the “confidence” and “motivation” to have a career in Country music.

00:00Well, here to keep us company this week is Cain Brown.
00:03How have you been?
00:04How was your summer?
00:05It's been amazing.
00:05It's been hot.
00:06It has been a very hot, very humid summer here in Nashville.
00:09Yeah, I don't want to go outside.
00:10I don't want to golf.
00:11Don't want to golf.
00:12That is a, you rarely hear a man say that.
00:14Yeah, it's been, it's been brutal.
00:16I'm waiting for fall golf.
00:18Yeah, I did.
00:19I never want to wish away the summer because then I wish it was back.
00:22But I was like, I'm getting that like twinge of, I really want to put on a sweater.
00:25I don't want it to be fall.
00:26I mean, it's, I don't know.
00:27It's been too hot.
00:28I could talk about that all day.
00:29Right.
00:29It has been very warm.
00:30I was thinking about the last time I saw you and it was when the bar opened.
00:36And do you remember what happened when I saw you?
00:39You were coming upstairs.
00:40I was about to go downstairs and my shoe got stuck in the floor and I couldn't move.
00:46And I was blocking all of you.
00:48I was like, that might be the most embarrassing thing that happened to me this year.
00:50And there was like a full TV crew behind you.
00:52I was like, Cain, I can't move.
00:54I'm stuck.
00:55No, didn't I help you with your shoe?
00:56Yeah, you got it out.
00:57But I was like, of course, like that would happen to me.
01:00It wasn't just you.
01:00There was like 30 people behind you and a TV crew.
01:02I was like, great.
01:03I hope we got that on camera.
01:04Yeah.
01:05No, you're fine.
01:05It happens.
01:06Yeah.
01:06The bar.
01:07That was amazing, though.
01:08It was so much fun.
01:09Like, it seems like the bar is packed every time I'm like driving past there on Broadway.
01:13Yeah, I love it.
01:13But I haven't got to go.
01:15Like I said, I've been down in Florida.
01:17But we were just there the other day for a Coleman thing.
01:20We did a little Coleman shoot.
01:22So, yeah, everything's neat about it.
01:24I don't know.
01:26It's weird to me that I have a bar on Broadway.
01:29But the decorations is clean in there.
01:31It looks good.
01:32The drinks good.
01:33The food's good.
01:34It's all.
01:34It's amazing.
01:34That's all people want.
01:35They just want to come hang out at Cain Brown spot.
01:37I got to go more.
01:39I told myself once it was going to open that I'd be there at least like five times out of
01:43the month.
01:43Roll five.
01:44That's a lot of times.
01:45Like when I'm a part of something, I want to be part of it.
01:49Well, and it's also like, can you imagine the number of people whose lives you're going
01:53to make if you pop up and they just like happen to be in the bar eating or drinking?
01:56Yeah.
01:57That would be.
01:57That's insane.
01:58Yeah, it'd be cool.
01:58And it's so fun.
01:59It's great.
01:59I saw Luke was like filming a bunch of stuff at his bar.
02:01And I was like, it's so nice.
02:02Like when you guys need to shoot content, you're like, let's go to the bar.
02:04Like makes it so easy for you guys.
02:06But that's awesome.
02:07Well, let's talk about music.
02:09Woman is headed up to the top of the chart, which is really exciting.
02:12What is this?
02:13Number one, number 14.
02:14I was trying to count earlier.
02:16I think 14 or 15.
02:17We're going to say 15.
02:18Yeah.
02:19That's exciting.
02:1915 number ones.
02:20I was thinking about, and I know we've talked about this before, but like the first time
02:23I ever interviewed you was like, I mean, you were just like little baby artists.
02:26And I was like, you were like, I just want one number one song on country radio.
02:30And it's been so fun to just like watch all the amazing stuff that has happened to you.
02:33I know.
02:34It's been, I've, I don't know.
02:38Number one never gets old.
02:39I will say that.
02:40It's like the, you always have goals set.
02:43And I will say that's one thing out of all the goals that hasn't changed is number one
02:48song.
02:49So I'm excited for it.
02:50And woman is, it's one of those songs that kind of takes me back to my earlier career
02:55of just feeling like having a special feeling about the song.
03:00Um, and I haven't, uh, I haven't had that, that feeling in a while for a song.
03:05So I'm glad it's doing good.
03:06Yeah.
03:07Well, the last time you were here in March, you told me that you've been working on the
03:10record and you were hoping to turn the record in sometime in July.
03:14Yeah, it didn't happen.
03:14Did that happen?
03:15I wondered if that happened or not.
03:16Well, supposedly, and somebody made a good point about this the other day.
03:19Uh, everybody's got pushed.
03:21Really?
03:22Yeah.
03:22I don't know if, um, I don't know if there was like, uh, if everybody knows deadlines.
03:27So I don't know.
03:28But like, there's, there's like six or seven artists that are pretty big right now.
03:32That's like the main ones that you hear that all their albums got pushed.
03:36Post made his, you know, he said his out loud.
03:39Yeah.
03:39Was there a reason?
03:40Or is it just like, everybody's been having a nice summer and it's like.
03:42Well, a lot of it's, I don't know that everybody was saying it's just something in the air.
03:46Everybody's album's like just a little behind.
03:49That's all right.
03:49I mean, like, I feel like this time of the year it's hard, right?
03:52Like it has been a hot summer, but it's been a great summer.
03:54Everybody's been like out doing stuff and like, it's hard to like be focused and get
03:57stuff turned in in the middle of the summer.
03:59What can you say about the album though?
04:01Like where you're at with it now, what you're excited about it?
04:03Very happy about it.
04:04Uh, I was a little nervous at first cause I was trying to do like a hot, all cohesive album.
04:09Um, but I think everything pretty, it sounds pretty cohesive cause you know, my albums
04:14have went like a kind of a wide range sometimes.
04:16Like I remember when I put, um, excuse me, I put, uh, grand on an album, which sounds completely
04:24different than Mississippi.
04:26I think it was, uh, uh, different man.
04:29Okay.
04:30I was trying to remember that song, but I couldn't remember where in like the, yeah, but having
04:34that on there with like bury me in Georgia was just, you know, so I, what, what my plan
04:38would be is to have this album and then if I can stay cause my mind goes all over the
04:44place.
04:44If I could stay on track, then I could do like a, uh, more modern party country album with
04:58this album that I'm working on now.
05:00Okay.
05:01Like, and then do a whole nother like EP of another genre of songs.
05:07Okay.
05:07So like basically just release a crap ton of music coming up here soon.
05:10I love that.
05:10But that's like the world that we live in now.
05:12You can release a lot of music and that's what's so great.
05:14Yeah.
05:14Cause I've just, I remember when I first came into it, I was like, let me put this out.
05:18Let me put this out.
05:18Let me put this out.
05:19And now it's reverse of the labels.
05:22Like, Hey, we got to put this out this time.
05:23I'm like, I'm not ready.
05:24Yeah.
05:25Right.
05:25When you say like more of like a modern, how did you just describe it?
05:30Like party albums?
05:31So like a lot of like uptempo on this album then?
05:34Which this, well, so the album I'm working on right now is, um, there's a lot of old
05:37sounding, uh, it's kind of, it's kind of, it was originally going to be kind of throwback
05:44to you, like 50 sounding, um, like some, like one song that kind of has an Eagles vibe
05:50to it.
05:51Ooh.
05:51And then I'm just saying like references from other people said that that's what it
05:55sounds like.
05:56And then, uh, like a, I have a Motown type song.
06:00Um, but just kind of old school.
06:02And then we were going to do like some, uh, music videos that were like short films to
06:08them.
06:08I had a whole plan, but that takes time.
06:11And so we hadn't even started on like the music videos or we've kind of got like ideas,
06:17but I don't know.
06:19I might, I might be biting off more than I can chew.
06:22It's still, it sounds like I'm happy to see you still in this space because it feels like
06:26where you were in March, just like really excited about everything in a really creative headspace
06:29and like excited about the music that you're making.
06:32At the end of the day, the music's good and that's what matters.
06:35That's what matters.
06:36Exactly.
06:36I want to talk about, you know, you're coming up on 10 years since, uh, what ifs came out
06:40with Lauren Alaina and you guys recently just reunited to do never been in love.
06:45Talk about getting to work together on this song.
06:48Cause I know that you guys have like remained close through the years too.
06:51Yeah.
06:51Um, Lauren is so talented and she, uh, she asked me to be on this song and, um, I couldn't
06:59say
06:59no, I love the song.
07:01I think the song is a hit.
07:02I think it's so catchy.
07:03Mm-hmm.
07:04Um, and like it's, it was easy for me.
07:07Uh, you know, I didn't do anything on the song other than sing to it.
07:11So, um, got to go over to Ben Johnson's studio and I think he produced the song as well.
07:18Um, she got to sing in a little SM7 while she was over there.
07:21We got to hang out and talk about old times and tell Ben how we grew up together and he
07:27got
07:27to hear all the stories and, and hang out and then she just came down to Florida and
07:30we got to shoot some more content.
07:31I was going to say, I was loving like the whole, like Lauren Alaina, Kane Brown family
07:35vacation that was happening.
07:36Yeah.
07:36Yeah.
07:36Yeah.
07:37So they brought Benny down and, um, like I said, it was so hot.
07:41Couldn't really go outside.
07:42Yeah.
07:42Uh, so we just shot a lot of content in the house and, um, just got to kick it.
07:47Well, that's so fun.
07:48I like was laughing cause I was thinking about how earlier this year we were at the ACMs and during
07:52your performance, Lauren Alaina's husband was up on his chair, swinging his
07:57jacket around.
07:57I said, I think for an entire three minutes.
07:59And at the time I was like, who is that guy?
08:02Like, cause I couldn't tell from where I was sitting.
08:04And then afterwards it's Lauren's husband.
08:05Yeah.
08:05He, uh, he should have won entertainer of the year right there.
08:08He stole the show.
08:09He kind of stole the show a little bit.
08:10Everyone was like, who is that guy?
08:12He's having a good time.
08:14That's so fun.
08:15When you were saying that you were telling Ben Johnson about like the times, like when you
08:19and Lauren growing up together, like what are some of the stories that stick out to
08:22you from like grade school that you're like, I can't believe that that's like who we were
08:25then and now we do this.
08:27Oh, uh, man.
08:28She was just, she, she loves telling the story about us being in choir together, me being
08:32the shy kid and her, uh, taking me to the teacher cause she heard me humming and she
08:38was like, you gotta listen to him sing.
08:40So that's her favorite story.
08:42I have chills.
08:43I did not know that.
08:44Yeah.
08:45I mean, Lauren's always had crazy vocals.
08:47So for me, I moved.
08:48So they, they, uh, just give y'all, everybody listening in a small context.
08:52So Lauren, of course, was on American Idol and we live in a small town of like 9,000
08:58people population and they had a parade for this was like, I don't know if this was when
09:03she was in like the top 16 or like the top eight or whatever, but we had a huge parade
09:11for her and everybody was celebrating her.
09:13And I remember I was a freshman, yeah, we were both freshmen.
09:18And so I ended up moving high schools, um, during that same season of her on American
09:24Idol.
09:25And now she's like top five and, you know, going away.
09:29I'm like, she's going to win.
09:30I'm telling everybody at my schools, I went to school with this girl, she's going to win.
09:35And so, yeah, um, I just remember she's, she was always the same.
09:39She is now hasn't changed singing in the car atop of her lungs.
09:42I remember our friends, uh, which is her best friend's mom.
09:45She'd be like, Lauren, shut up.
09:47She's like, I can't hear you or I can't hear the radio over you.
09:51Uh, so she's just always been singing so talented and I just, she deserves the world.
09:55She really does.
09:56She's what gave me the, the confidence and the motivation to, to be in the music industry.
10:03So I owe my whole career to her.
10:05Uh, so yeah, I root for her.
10:07That's amazing.
10:08I had no idea that she was the one that kind of like pulled you aside and like took you
10:11to the teacher to say that.
10:12Cause like she said, like you were very shy, like you might not have done that.
10:16But I also, I also feel like it was probably really like inspiring for you to see someone
10:22you knew doing this and making it.
10:24It makes it much more realistic when you, when you see somebody do it that that's close
10:27to you.
10:28It's like, maybe I could do this.
10:29Yeah.
10:29And it definitely wasn't just me, you know, she motivated a lot of other, there's a lot
10:34of people in the Chattanooga area that are artists.
10:37Um, and I know during that time, like a lot of people looked up to Lauren, even though
10:41that they didn't tell her or whatever.
10:42Yeah.
10:43Yeah.
10:43That's so sweet.
10:44The last time you were in here, you were mentioned that you were like very much in a
10:47new era, like not just musically, but also just like personally.
10:50Are you still very much feeling like that right now?
10:53Yeah, it comes and goes.
10:55I feel, uh, I, I, I, a lot, a lot more just chill and relaxed and whatever happens, happens.
11:03I think I put a lot of pressure on myself before.
11:05Mm-hmm.
11:05Um, so getting back into that creative mode, I think made me excited because I hadn't felt
11:14that in a while.
11:15Mm-hmm.
11:15And then now I'm, I, I still have that passion of being creative, but it's, it's a more of a
11:23whatever happens, kind of happens.
11:24Yeah.
11:25And isn't it crazy that like you're the one that puts all the pressure on yourself and
11:27you're like, I have the ability to stop this.
11:29Yeah.
11:30Like it's a much more enjoyable way to live.
11:32The stress is gone.
11:33That's good.
11:33Yeah.
11:34That makes me happy to hear that.
11:35Have you still been boxing?
11:36We were talking about that the last time you were here.
11:37No.
11:38And I can't now because of my ear.
11:39When I got, uh, the golf ball.
11:41Oh my God.
11:41I forgot about, how was that healing?
11:43It was good.
11:44Yeah.
11:44It was a little car.
11:45I mean, I couldn't really tell at all, but that had to have been one of the scariest things.
11:48Yeah.
11:49Yeah.
11:49It was, uh, my, it was my worst accident I've ever had.
11:53Yeah.
11:54So just, uh, I think the amount of blood is what scared me the most.
11:57Right.
11:57Cause you were, for anybody who doesn't know, you were out golfing, you took a golf ball
12:01to your left ear and it was like going how fast, like over a hundred miles an hour.
12:06Right.
12:06Like 150.
12:07Oh my God.
12:08Straight to the head.
12:09Oh, Kane.
12:10You're so lucky.
12:11I mean, like, I know that that was a bad accident, but that could have been so much worse.
12:14Like I can't even imagine.
12:15Caitlin must've been so scared.
12:17Yeah.
12:17Well, she, she saw me, well, the phone call, she was scared.
12:20But then when she, when she saw me, I was walking, I was telling, I was telling her to
12:23calm down.
12:24Yeah.
12:24She's okay.
12:25Or I'm okay.
12:26But yeah, no, I guess boxing would definitely be out for you.
12:29Yeah.
12:29Even putting the headgear on would, it used to bother us before because we got this new
12:35headgear.
12:35So like even putting it on was one of the one things that we talked about was these hurt
12:39our ears.
12:40So you were like, no, no, no, no.
12:42So what have you been doing to work out or have you had to change things up then to be
12:45able to do that?
12:46No, I've done a lot of athletic training.
12:48So squats and the box jumps, Bulgarians and the one legged split jumps.
12:53Oh my God.
12:54No, no.
12:57You are currently out on the road right now.
12:58I want to know what are some of the things that are in like your tour survival kit or that
13:02you like always have stocked on the bus?
13:08Definitely like the wild protein chips, water.
13:18I don't really have anything crazy.
13:20You know, out of my whole career, they've kind of just created my rider for me.
13:24I was going to say.
13:25Yeah.
13:25My whole career, really, I've just been told what to do and where to go.
13:29And I've just, you know, it makes it.
13:31Your manager's laughing behind you.
13:32She's like, yep, that's it.
13:32It makes it easy.
13:34I don't have to worry.
13:35I'm not like, you know, just give me a time.
13:37I don't want to.
13:39Yeah.
13:39I just, just tell me where to go.
13:41Speaking of your rider, I feel like I saw something not that long ago and I don't know
13:44whether it was real or not, but it was like no ranch on property.
13:47Because I know you don't like ranch dressing, but is that real?
13:49Yeah, that's because everybody started messing with me.
13:50Everybody started messing with me.
13:52I didn't put that out there though.
13:53They probably did that as a joke.
13:55But like first day back after that, everybody, I walked in my green room and there was just ranch
14:01bottles in every corner.
14:02Oh no.
14:02Yeah.
14:03You really, you kind of messed up by taking a stand of how much you hate ranch because
14:06now no one's ever going to let you live it down.
14:08Yeah.
14:08And then the cool thing is like the venues when you, when you play there, they'll, they'll
14:11bring you some, they'll bring you like gifts.
14:15Like I've got one.
14:15It's a, it's a surfboard.
14:16I don't surf, but it's a surfboard.
14:18It's got my name on it.
14:19It's like, it's cool.
14:19So cool.
14:19But in my Florida house.
14:21And I got a snowboard for one of them.
14:24Um, I got a, a bird scooter with my name on it.
14:27Oh my gosh.
14:28But then this venue wanted to just bring me a box of ranch and I'm like, you're going
14:33to gift me this and I'm literally going to trash it.
14:35So I was like, luckily they said, no, don't do that.
14:38What I think is so funny about your extreme dislike of ranch is that I was watching, you've
14:42never had it, right?
14:43No.
14:44That's what, do they have the kids ever had it or do you even let it in the house?
14:47Uh, I mean my, my wife eats salad.
14:50Oh she does?
14:50I mean, I think she does balsamic.
14:52So she's not having ranch either.
14:54Yeah.
14:55But like, I wouldn't even, I don't know what it is about ranch.
14:59I just, and I will say, I don't know if you heard the story that I've talked about of,
15:03it was like second grade.
15:04No, I haven't heard this.
15:06Oh no.
15:06Is this child, is this like tied to childhood trauma or something?
15:09Yeah, but it was not even a bad trauma.
15:10It was like this, it was this girl, her name was Marley and she, I would sit by her in
15:17the cafeteria and she would put ranch on pizza, which already to me, and a lot of people do
15:22that obviously, but at the time, that was disgusting.
15:25The little square pizzas.
15:27Oh no, the cafeteria pizza that we all grew up eating is so bad.
15:30Yeah, the ranch with cardboard cafeteria pizza.
15:32And then, okay, like that's weird, but it's to me, cause I've never tried it and then it
15:36just smells nasty, it looks gross.
15:38But then, when she was done, like, she dipped her oranges in it.
15:45Okay, that is, I don't know where Marley is today, but I hope she found help.
15:49Yeah, and I'm like, that's nasty.
15:51And so, it's just, I don't know, ever since then, like I haven't tried it, but I was like,
15:56that just doesn't taste good.
15:57So, that's been engraved in my brain ever since.
16:01And I hate salad, so no reason for me to eat ranch.
16:05No, exactly.
16:06You are coming back to play Stars and Strings for Us later this year with Lee Bryce, Brantley
16:13Gilbert, and then Stephen Wilson Jr. as I'm also playing.
16:15Have you spent much time with any of those guys?
16:18No.
16:19You haven't?
16:20I don't believe in so.
16:21See, I feel like you and Brantley would probably really cut up.
16:23So, me and Brantley just recently started talking, but what's crazy is Brantley's guitar
16:29player, Noah Henson, produced my first EP ever.
16:34Did he really?
16:34Yeah, and I used to stay with him.
16:36That's wild.
16:37Yeah.
16:37So, I've known him for 12 years.
16:39Mm-hmm.
16:42And he's kind of been our bridge, but me and Brantley, Brantley just started gaming.
16:46So, I got him hooked up with my guy, Knox.
16:49So, he went down and hooked his old streaming setup, and then we just had a show recently
16:53in Ohio together.
16:55Mm-hmm.
16:56So, we've been texting back and forth, FaceTiming a little bit.
16:58So, it'll be good to see him.
16:59He is one of the funniest people I've ever met.
17:01And I think people always think of him as, like, the tough guy, but, oh, my God.
17:04Like, Brantley gets, like, giggling about something.
17:07That'll be super fun, though.
17:08We're really excited that you're going to play that for us.
17:10Yeah, I'm excited to be there.
17:10How have all the kiddos been?
17:11They look like they're getting so big.
17:13They're getting awesome.
17:14I had a heart-to-heart with Kingsley last night, because she said I didn't hold her no more
17:19like I hold Crew and Cody.
17:22Oh, man.
17:23And she's big.
17:24Like, I go to pick her up now, and I'm just like, it's almost impossible.
17:28Yeah, like, how much longer?
17:29Like, at one point, you pick your kid up for the last time, and nobody really realizes it.
17:33It's crazy.
17:33And, but, yeah, so last night, I held her like a baby and rocked her and sang, go to sleep.
17:40Oh, okay.
17:40And the way she just stared at me was just like, I don't know.
17:45That's pretty, like, that's special.
17:47Yeah.
17:48She's such a cute little girl.
17:50Oh, my God.
17:50When I saw her in that golf cart riding around with you and Lauren, like, she just looked
17:53like she was having the time of her life.
17:55Yeah, she don't want to grow up, though.
17:57But it's crazy, because she's only six, but she seems like she's 15.
18:01Right.
18:02I think that happens with firstborn daughter.
18:04Yeah, but she grew up with all adults, you know, being on tour.
18:07They don't go to school, so they don't really get to hang out with kids.
18:09They're, they're friends are adults.
18:12So, yeah, she grew up fast.
18:13What's the most dad thing about you that you think really would, like, shock yourself,
18:16like, 10 years ago that you do now?
18:18I don't know.
18:19I'm pretty strict.
18:20I would say that.
18:21You've told me that before.
18:22Yeah.
18:22Which kind of shocks me.
18:23I would assume those little girls turn you into a puddle.
18:25No, my son turns me into a puddle.
18:28Yeah.
18:28They do not.
18:32Yeah, I don't know.
18:33I would say that, I will say I do, I'm more of a, I'm more of a, I'm a, I'm
18:38a dad, but
18:38I'm more of a big brother.
18:40Would Caitlin say that too?
18:43Well, I think Kate, I don't know.
18:45I think Kate would look at it completely different than I, than like a normal dad would look at
18:52it.
18:52Yeah.
18:52If that makes any sense.
18:54Kind of, yeah.
18:54Yeah.
18:55Cause for me, like I'll, like, I'll like, I don't know.
18:58I just like, I gotta pick on them, I'm gonna push them, like, let's go, like, but they
19:02love it.
19:03Like, I'm goofy with them.
19:04Yes.
19:04And then I'll like, Kate will get onto all of us and I'll be like, oh, like, you know,
19:09I act like I'm crying with them.
19:11So, I don't know.
19:12Oh my gosh.
19:12Maybe that's a dad thing.
19:13Having a great time with them.
19:14Yeah.
19:14Really liked that.
19:15All right.
19:16Well, listen, thank you so much for coming to see us.
19:17We always appreciate the time.
19:18We're excited to see you at Stars and Strengths and congratulations on the success of woman.
19:22I can't wait to hear all this new stuff you've been working on.
19:24Thank you so much.
19:25Nice for having me.
