00:01all right so as this tiger season starts to wind down and they're running out of time and
00:08i mean mathematically there's a difference between mathematics and and reality three and a half games
00:16out of a wild card spot with a month and change to go here isn't impossible but it's growing ever
00:21more unlikely and they're just not playing like a a playoff team but the truth is it's probably
00:29more of a a commentary people like to say the american league sucks and does it suck or is it
00:36just that the talent is dispersed over a lot of teams and it's hard for these middle of the pack
00:41teams to gain some footing there's some teams a few teams at the top clearly a few teams at the
00:45bottom and then everybody else is kind of on equal footing and and you know it's more parody um
00:52you know i don't think that there's been this this drastic change and all of a sudden there's no
00:57talent um but anyway whatever that's a whole different topic is aj hinch in any kind of real
01:02trouble i don't think so i i i i want to just laugh at it and like you people are
01:09crazy but i i guess if
01:11i take a step back can i understand some of that a very small bit i don't think he's under
01:19any kind of
01:20trouble or pressure because look what he's doing with a team that it's it's not i mean scott harris
01:27assembles his team and the guys that have faulted on this team are by and large there's scott harris
01:34signees not the draft picks but there's scott harris signees and if you're going to look at what's the
01:40plus for aj hinch and all this well how many rookies have made their debut this year more than a
01:46handful
01:46and they've all had varying degrees of success and most of it is is pretty good success when you
01:53look at mcgonagall and how you lee and uh you know max clark and uh and others on this team
02:00that have
02:00just kind of valencia and callahan all these guys have done a real nice job mel jerry that's another
02:05one and okay they promote sears to to start or to pitch yesterday didn't start yesterday um and he got
02:14lit up a little bit in his four innings of work but it's not that he was undeserving of getting
02:19a
02:19promotion of some kind i'm surprised got promoted to the majors at that at that point because he
02:23hadn't pitched that much in the minors but had pitched well in the minors i'll judge aj by how does
02:29he handle the staff that he's got and and i think he's done a pretty good job with what he's
02:33got so i
02:35don't know why people would say that they're they're done with them are tired i mean i they're a little
02:40nitpicky things you're watching i think scoobal's gone over 100 pitches in his last two starts and
02:45he wasn't doing that with the tigers and it's a nitpicky thing but something people blamed that
02:49the question the heart of scoobal was a scoobal's heart or is that just aj hinch being protective of
02:55his players and how he handles things you can disagree with a lot that aj hinch does and that's
03:00fine uh but is it enough to you say well he's got to go there are things i wish he'd
03:05do more i wish
03:06they'd run more uh steal more bases so i'm not calling for his job because i think he's a hell
03:12of a manager i don't think they've reached a critical mass point where i'm out searching for
03:16somebody better the truth of the matter is if you can get somebody better i'm not against it
03:20uh i think it would be harder to get somebody better than aj hinch for this particular roster
03:26okay i i do think the cards he had been given is that he has to play right now are
03:31a lot of young
03:32players and as much as scott harris deserves credit age i think aj deserves a good deal of credit as
03:42well for the development of the young players max clark kevin mcgonigal how you lee very very promising
03:51starts uh you have to wonder about valencia where he settles in and you know they he got run on
03:57a lot
03:57this weekend and maybe he plays shifts to first base maybe he uh is a the future you know platoon
04:04dh
04:05well a lot of those stolen bases weren't there weren't throws on them because they got such great
04:09jumps and that's on the pitcher yes but but it's still not considered necessarily a strength but at
04:14the end of the day i am um i look at uh i look at the job he is doing
04:20with the young core and don't
04:23see that he i think he's been part of their development he has to have been part of their
04:27development he's the manager of the team so it's not much of a stretch is he perfect no can you
04:33find
04:33somebody better you know i'm willing to be open-minded to that i just think it's harder than people
04:38realize to get somebody that might be better for this collection of players than aj hinch
04:42if you're going to have a more veteran team with less platoon players like if you're going to
04:47try and have nine guys that play every day okay and you know nobody does but i'm over
04:53exaggerating but yeah if you're going to have guys a platoon i think it's i think that's where
04:59hinch is actually you know pretty good it's hard for a team like the tigers easier for a team like
05:04the dodgers to have everyday players ideally you have the same nine out there most nights and that's
05:10just not well same eight behind the pitcher but you get the point i think there's an important six
05:14games this week you're playing against better competition with tampa coming in and of course
05:18the dodgers over the weekend i think one of the maybe underrated aspects of what happens this week
05:25is when they get back into a situation where they have a lead late what will aj hinch do who
05:33which arm
05:33does he go to in the bullpen right is he going to save uh you know holton and summers for
05:39the eighth
05:39ninth inning or is he saving that for kenley jansen again you know that those are some of the things
05:45i'm going to be looking for the waga spot at the the start yesterday in the in the opener if
05:50you will
05:50um so he's probably out for tonight but maybe available tomorrow and you know but where do they
05:56use him because he's been a useful arm out of the bullpen but is he going to change at all
06:02how the bullpen is is being utilized because that is an area where i think there's a lot of
06:07uh reason for criticism is he perfect no of course not but i i i think that the given where
06:16this team
06:17is and who should be around long term i'm i'm encouraged um but we'll see i mean you know the
06:25the fact is
06:27is if they go with a more veteran group i'm not sure that aj makes sense now they need to
06:33get some
06:33better veterans there's no question they need to get some better veterans because they've had
06:37some of their signings and maybe that goes on aj as well but some of their signings and who they
06:42brought in and specifically pitching pitchers every year do we have to go out and get an alex
06:47cobb kind of guy do we have to have some veteran that's not going to produce do we and then
06:52this year
06:52might the best example might be kenley but uh let's get to your phone calls uh brian in detroit
06:59you're on 971 hello brian hey fellas how y'all doing today gator i gotta ask you a question before
07:04we go sure but does um how is this even a question that this man will he be on the
07:09house or how you
07:10described it he went to the playoff the last two years they took away his two best pitchers now they
07:15three and a half game backs and there's an actual discussion is he the right manager that's foolish
07:22yes he's the right manager because i guarantee you if the lions don't make the playoff or something
07:27happen this year it won't be no discussion if campbell is the right coach they're just going
07:31to stick behind on the fence it's not even a question well brian i think there's always i think
07:36there's always extremes and that's kind of who we're speaking to today a little bit as they fade
07:41people are turning some attention on aj um and i do think if the lions miss the playoffs yes you
07:46will
07:46get people questioning dan campbell i love to see it but gator i'm gonna ask you a question yep
07:54the the cleveland browns should do a sanders i've been watching that just to make sure i got it right
07:59should do a sanders i'll play watson all this time watson went to that press conference
08:06and called out the whole city of cleveland and they still named him the starting um quarterback
08:12that's how you know you're a trash organization and whatever reason you came up with to name that
08:17guy the starting quarterback top monkey you're an idiot you ain't gonna have that job long you
08:22and the owner must let's just bomb the season and go for another quarterback next year because that
08:26was a terrible decision to make that guy the quarterback he's a he is horrible and he called
08:33everybody out and you name him a quarterback i don't understand that that's why fans call in thinking
08:37they know more than organizations for idiots like that love y'all show fellas what was the question
08:44i don't know why well right and i got a question for you gator and then it goes the whole
08:49thing and
08:49there's no question for me i agree with everything you said i think his question meant was for the
08:54people that are questioning aj hinch actually and his job security right but well he said he had a
08:58question for me either no i know i think he's a big should do her fan maybe that's why he
09:02brought it
09:03i'll say this i don't think top market who hasn't coached a regular season game yet is already on the
09:09hot seat and i would i also first coach fired before the season begins i i also wonder a little
09:15bit if he's basically doing exactly what the owner asked him to do the the dude has a dead cap
09:22number
09:22of 124 million dollars i think that they probably feel i i shouldn't say that let me reword this
09:29there is a possibility that the owner said given what we're paying this guy
09:35we need to go as far down the road as we can to justify him being here let's see uh
09:42lose the most
09:44popular player on your team having forced to trade him check start the guy that nobody in this town
09:52wants to see check i mean think of all the money that's tied up in miles garrett and now deshaun
10:01watson that should be dead money but they're not going to use it because of what i agree with you
10:07i
10:07think this to me screams that ownership said hey we need a little return on this investment here we
10:13can't just afford to drop him we need to see him play i am really starting to wonder if that
10:19is the
10:19case if that's the case that's horrific and that's a bad i mean that's a bad situation like if you're
10:24monken i mean maybe he maybe i should rethink that he won't be fired but look and shudori hasn't been
10:32perfect in the preseason here he's just been better and like a lot better than what deshaun watson has
10:38been deshaun watson's turned the ball over enough well again not our problem not our dysfunction somebody
10:44else's issue 248-539-9797 it's karshen anderson here on 97.1
10:49you
