Twitch is facing backlash over a new policy that would allow content uploaded by creators to be used to train artificial intelligence models developed by Amazon.

The controversial part? Creators who don't want their video and audio used for AI training have to opt out rather than opting in.

In this video, I break down Twitch's new policy, the backlash from creators, and the bigger issue surrounding consent and ownership in the age of AI. Should creators have to manually prevent their content from being used to train AI, or should platforms be required to get permission first?

Twitch reportedly hosts more than two million hours of video and audio content every day, making the platform an enormous potential source of training data for Amazon's AI ambitions.

I'll also discuss why this could be part of a much larger trend affecting creators across the internet.

What do you think? Should AI companies need explicit permission before using creator content for training?

00:00Twitch faces backlash over plan to use creators' content for Amazon AI training.
00:06Twitch is facing criticism from creators and users over a new policy that would allow content posted on the platform
00:13to be used to train artificial intelligence models developed by parent company Amazon.
00:19The streaming platform announced Wednesday that creators who do not want their video and audio content used for AI training
00:25will have to opt out.
00:27The decision quickly sparked criticism during a Twitch video Q&A session with many creators questioning why participation isn't optional
00:35from the beginning.
00:37If it was opt-in, nobody would opt-in.
00:40That's honestly the answer, Twitch Chief Producer Officer Mike Minton said when discussing the company's decision.
00:46Oh my god.
00:50Don't deny it.
00:53Way too, I guess at least he was truthful to a fault.
01:00If it was opt-in, nobody would opt-in.
01:02Maybe that's because this wasn't a good idea.
01:05Maybe this is something nobody wanted.
01:09So, if it was opt-in, nobody would opt-in.
01:13That's why we made everyone opt-in automatically.
01:17What does that tell you?
01:19What does that tell you about this idea?
01:28Twitch hosts more than 2 million hours of video and audio content every day, providing a potentially valuable source of
01:35data for training and improving AI models.
01:37The company's approach is similar to policies adopted by many other major social media and digital platforms, which generally allow
01:45content to be used for AI training by default, while requiring users to manually opt-out if they do not
01:51want to participate.
01:53For Twitch creators, however, the policy has raised concerns about how their work could be used and whether they should
02:00have to take action to prevent their content from becoming training data.
02:04The controversy comes as Amazon continues to expand its artificial intelligence efforts across its businesses, making Twitch's enormous library of
02:12creator-generated content a potentially significant resource.
02:16Amazon did not respond to a request for comment.
02:20Okay, so they're using creators' content for Amazon AI training, but that doesn't explain who โ€“ but they're not โ€“
02:30and that's all they said.
02:32They're not โ€“ they didn't say how they're going to use artificial intelligence on videos and audio.
02:37I mean, if it's training, is anyone going to see this work that's changed?
02:41There's any โ€“ I mean, you know, it really โ€“ it just said that it's for AI training, and they're
02:50going to use videos and audio uploaded to Twitch.
02:55But it doesn't explain what the point is.
02:57What are you training?
02:59How do you use AI?
03:01You can't get stock footage somewhere and practice on that?
03:05It just doesn't make sense.
03:10I still can't believe this part.
03:14If it was opt-in, nobody would opt-in.
03:17That's honestly the answer.
03:21I mean, on one hand, that should tell him something.
03:25On the other hand, at least he was honest about it.
03:32So, yeah, so, I mean, I don't know โ€“ like I said, it just โ€“ they didn't explain what exactly
03:39this was going to do.
03:40Are they going to be โ€“ you know, are they going to be modifying people's videos and audio with AI?
03:46Are they โ€“ is anyone even going to see these creations?
03:49Is it just going to be on Amazon servers, like their work servers, or, you know โ€“ there's a whole
03:56lot โ€“ there's a whole lot of questions not answered by what this is.
04:03And honestly, that's probably another reason everyone would opt-out.
04:08You're not really being clear with what this is going to do to people's โ€“ in creations on Twitch.
04:14Most people โ€“ you know, most people on Twitch, you know, they're either doing live streams or they're just โ€“
04:19of, like, live streams like this, of โ€“ or, like, they're maybe watching a different online creator, or they're playing
04:29video games.
04:30And the majority of Twitch is video games.
04:32So, it's kind of like, what exactly are you going to be doing?
04:40So, I still have a lot of โ€“ still have a lot of my videos on Twitch.
04:46Had to โ€“ I let Twitch decide what to keep when they limited 100 hours to every creator.
04:56Yeah, and I was trying to keep it, like, under 90, because once you hit 90 hours, you kind of
05:01got, like, a warning that your storage was running too low.
05:06Um, I don't stream there anymore, so I haven't really touched Twitch, and I really don't use Twitch at all
05:13anymore.
05:15Um, but yeah, so, that's just โ€“ it just seems like a lot of people are already upset, and you
05:22never โ€“ and you never gave them a reason to โ€“ to be okay with this, because there's really no
05:28information.
05:29Um, I โ€“ I said it a few times, and I still don't know what โ€“ exactly they're trading.
05:36Um, so, um, if you do have an account on Twitch, if you stream on Twitch, uh, you might want
05:42to make sure you opt out of this.
05:44Um, me, I could care less what they do on โ€“ to my, uh, stored footage on Twitch.
05:50I don't know if โ€“ I don't know if they're going to be using stored videos, or if it's got
05:55to be a live stream that they, uh, that it's, you know, it has to be live in order to
06:01use that.
06:03But, you know, it would be nice if they actually gave some, uh, explanation on why โ€“ on what they're
06:11doing, and why they're doing it, and how it's going to be implemented, and, you know, information.
