00:00My Girlfriend was a song the label hated. They didn't want it on the record. We had a fight to
00:04get it on the record and then we had a fight to make it a single. We refused to tour
00:08because they
00:08didn't want to release it as a single. We said, well, we're not going to tour. We're going to go
00:11home. And that came from fan interaction. We play the song every night on stage and the fans, they
00:16would go nuts. Prog, metal, prog, and everything in between. Welcome to this episode of Talkin'
00:24Rock with Meltdown. Don't forget to follow the audio-only Talkin' Rock podcast on all podcast
00:29platforms. And now, it's time for today's conversation. Here's Meltdown. What's going
00:35on, dude? Oh, we're just getting ready to start this big old tour with our friends in Seven
00:41Dust, who you know. Yep. And this new band called Return to Dust. So there's a lot of dust. Yeah,
00:47there's a lot of dust. You're going to shake the dust off and come to the Fillmore coming
00:50up on August 23rd. It's so funny. I don't want to get into it too much, but I remember interviewing
00:56Return to Dust last year or whatever. And I'm like, hey, listen, I don't really know
00:59that much about you guys. So I want you to kind of tell me the story. Like, tell me your
01:03story. And they forgot to mention the part about their drummer's dad, who's really famous.
01:09Yeah. They mentioned that. They totally skipped over that whole part.
01:13Well, they may not. They may, you know, smartly enough. I mean, we went through, no one in our
01:18band was famous, but, or had a famous parent. But, you know, like, as you know, when we started
01:24out, we were really close with the Nickelback guys and Chad, you know, produced our first
01:28record. So, like, for us, we couldn't escape. Like, I mean, we used to get interviews where
01:33people were like, oh, what's Chad doing right now? You got his phone? Call him up. Call
01:36him up on the air. And we're like, all right, enough. So we had to, like, really consciously
01:41make an effort to try to, like, be our own band and escape that, which we did. Yeah.
01:45Which we did. So they're trying as well.
01:47Yeah. It was funny because I said to him, I was talking, well, that band Return to Dust started
01:52with the singer and I want to say the bass player, but I could be wrong. Anyways, the
01:57guitar player is walking down the street with his mother and they heard this band jamming
02:00in this garage. And the mom went over there and said, hey, you guys should listen. You
02:04guys should talk to my son, who's a guitar player. And then I jokingly said to London,
02:08what, did your father get you in the band? I had no idea who he was. So anyhow, that's
02:17my story and I'm sticking to it. But yeah, Return to Dust, like you said, Seven Dust and you
02:21guys coming to town on August 23rd. And last time I saw you was on that Motley tour last
02:27year. How'd that all wrap up for you guys?
02:30Oh, it was great. Yeah. We only did the one show.
02:33Oh, is that it? Okay. I thought you were on the tour.
02:34Yeah, it was just the one show. I wish it was the tour. When we did two tours, I think
02:39you came out to one of those shows probably on the tours we did way back, 2008.
02:43Oh, yeah.
02:44We did two tours with them. St. Los Angeles tour. And then they did an anniversary of Dr. Feelgood,
02:51which they did the whole album. So it's rad. That was the tour where Tommy burnt his hand
02:58and then they had to get Phil and drummers come in and he was still there. But Morgan
03:04from Seven Dust played one night. I remember that he was actually the first guy to come
03:08in and he smashed, he broke the set, smashed the bulbs above his head. And yeah, it was
03:15an interesting time. I remember waking up in the morning on the bus and Joe, our drummer,
03:19comes on the, on the bus and he's just like, uh, yeah, I got to learn the whole set for
03:23Motley Crue tonight. Uh, they asked me to learn all the songs. It's freaking out.
03:29Really?
03:29Because I guess the first thing they did in the morning is went to the other band's
03:32drummers and said, you got to learn all this stuff. Cause it, but then they brought up
03:35Morgan. I guess he already knew all the songs. So that's incredible. So, so let me get
03:39this straight. Did, did Joe ever play or no? No, he, they just wanted him to learn
03:44it in case, you know, someone couldn't fly. They couldn't, they had to fly someone in like
03:49that morning. And I guess, uh, Morgan made it, but in case you couldn't, they'd have
03:52someone there like Joe had to go and like set up in a room and learn all the songs.
03:57How bad ass would that have been? Have you ever, have you ever jumped on stage with
04:00another band, uh, you know, uh, to, to, to sing or do anything like that?
04:04Yeah. A little bit. Uh, it's kind of weird when you do it with other bands, it's almost
04:09like it's really nerve wracking for some reason. I don't know why. Cause who cares,
04:13but it's not, it's not like I'm not nervous. When I go on stage, I have no nerves at all.
04:17I'm like, I don't know, whatever. But then if someone's like, you want to come on stage
04:19and sing a song? I'm like, Oh God, I hope I remember the words.
04:24Yeah. Right. What bands have you done that with?
04:27I don't even remember. I have, but I can't think of a fool. I just don't like doing it.
04:32Maybe I just, every time someone asks me, I'm like, nah, nah, nah, don't worry about it.
04:36Yeah. Right. Yeah. That's great. So you got this, uh, part, uh, funeral songs,
04:40part one coming out. That's to, uh, September 4th. What did that? Six songs?
04:45Six. So it's part one of two. So we'll put another six out in March.
04:51That'll be EP two. What it's going to be called. I don't know. Some other kinds of songs.
04:56Well, wait a second. It won't be funeral songs part two.
04:58Well, we can, but it's open, right? We can name whatever we want.
05:02Um, so, uh, but we've recorded three already. We just, we're in Nashville recording the first three,
05:07which sound awesome. Like not to say it's, it's better than the first EP, but they definitely
05:13graduated and we feel we're in a flow now. So, and then we have to go back after this tour's
05:19over
05:19and fly right back to Nashville to record the rest. Okay. So you're in Nashville right now?
05:23No, I mean, we're in Minneapolis because the tour starts where you got pre-production today
05:28and tomorrow. Okay. And it's first shows in Duluth. So we'll just go from here to Duluth and then
05:35make a way around. Now, uh, for, for people that don't know what is involved in pre-production.
05:40I've been down in Nashville before and seen there's this, uh, there's this gigantic warehouse down
05:45there. It's some of the bigger bands go down to when they do their pyro, do everything. What,
05:49what, what, what is involved, uh, pre-production for you guys?
05:52Yeah. That's soundstage. What are you talking about? Yeah. So we have, they have, so you can
05:56put a full set in there, full PA arena, PA, everything. So yeah, on purpose. So you, you're
06:01just building the show. So it's more for crew than it is for us. Right. It's not for us to
06:07learn our
06:08own songs. We, I mean, we already know the songs, right? It's, it's for more of the, the, the, yeah,
06:14the, we don't have pyro, but if you were to do pyro and everything has to be timed. So it's
06:18all the
06:18lights, video screens, all that stuff. Take sometimes pre-pro is like weeks because there's
06:25so much, but us like, it's like for the bands only two days, like, uh, for the crew, it's more
06:30like four or five days. There's so much to do and set up. And then they have to figure out
06:34how to
06:35take all the stuff down and get into a truck in like half an hour. Right. So they have to,
06:41so us, we just go there and we fart around. And honestly, it's like, we've got a new monitor
06:45console we bought. So we'll have to figure out how to do our own, all our new in-ear mixes.
06:50And people are usually buying new stuff. Dean's bought all a bunch of new bases. So, you know,
06:55pretty much just go there and you fart around and then someone's like, you want to guys want
06:58to start playing music? I'm like, yeah, all right, we can play some songs.
07:02So, um, you guys got, you guys have put out three songs from this new EP so far.
07:06Yeah. Yeah. And so, uh, Winnebago lay low. That's the latest one, if I'm not mistaken,
07:11right? Or is, is, I got a barricade out there and a funeral song as well. A funeral. Yeah,
07:15that's it. Those are the three funeral song they just released. They're like grat tracks. It's this
07:19new thing where they just give people a little taste of what's to come. But the thing is,
07:24we only have six songs, so you can't really give them everything.
07:28You got them all. So it's good. I, yeah. Halfway there. I mean, yeah. So it's a little sad,
07:36but the good news is, is like the reason we did the EPs is because honestly, like,
07:41it's, you've way better songs because now before, like we had the whole album written,
07:47but I had to be honest, like you probably half of them are not really great or half of them
07:53are
07:53like, nah, I don't know. Like it's me and acoustic guitars. What are we going to do with this? I
07:57don't
07:58know. So now we can pick the ones that we really like that we think are going to be the
08:02best and
08:02the fans are going to like. So same as EP two now, like the three we just recorded were brand
08:06new songs.
08:07Cause they weren't even songs. So they're not even leftovers. So, you know, now, instead of
08:11having EP two be like the songs we didn't record, which are going to be not as good. Now they're
08:17like new songs are fresh. So it's a way better approach. And then at the end of it, they're
08:22going to get a full record. They'll have 12 songs and then we can, then we'll release the leftovers.
08:30Then they can get this, the mean acoustic guitar doing a song. Yeah. For like a movie soundtrack
08:35or something. Right. So is, is theoretically speaking, is there a chance that the three
08:39songs you've already recorded for the next record could not even be on there? They could
08:43be, they're good. No, just because we're doing vinyl and vinyl takes so long. Okay. So we
08:49had to master the vinyl like months ago. It's we had lots of things like to get a stuff out
08:54in March. We could record into March, but if we want physical, we're going to need to
09:00have that done by the end of the year. Like, like mastered because it takes, yeah, it's
09:05backlogged. And you're doing this in Nashville, you said.
09:09We're doing it in Nashville. We're doing it with a guy named Chris Baseford, uh, who's,
09:13I'm co-producing it with him and he's awesome. He's, we worked with him once before doing a,
09:20this, we re-recorded the song called country song and we just did it for kind of for fun
09:26with a friend, Corey Marks, who's a country singer. He was saying on it and we loved it.
09:31We had a great connection and he's really good. And he lives, he moved to Nashville.
09:35So he lives there now. So we always find this best to work where the producer lives. I find
09:40we can, we're so used to traveling. We can, I don't need to be in LA to have, be in
09:45my mood.
09:46I don't know. So we just go, he lives in Nashville and we're going to Nashville.
09:50Yeah. You know what? Um, it's, it's funny because, you know, never having written songs,
09:54but I'm sure there's probably an area where you're, where you feel comfortable. Do you,
09:58do you come to Nashville with songs already written or do you start, start from scratch there?
10:02No, no, they're all done. There's, there's not a lot to do on the writing side. We'll go do some
10:08pre-production as well. We'll go into a rehearsal space and we'll just go through the songs and
10:12figure out tempo. Um, we'll figure out what key, if the key is a little low and then we'll just
10:17work on parts. It's like, something's not right here. Like the drum, usually it's a lot of drum
10:21stuff. Like there's something with the drum pattern. We need to shift here. And then when we go and
10:26track, it's really fast. Like we, we go and record three songs in three days. It's that fast. And
10:33people are like, how do you record three songs in three days? I'm like, it's, we just go and we
10:36don't, there's no, like, what are we going to put here? It's like, we already know.
10:40Yeah. And it's funny. Listen, if the song ever sucks, it is the drummer's fault. It's like the
10:44goalie's fault. It's always their fault. Drummers are goalies, dude. Right. And Joe,
10:48our drummer is a goalie and it's, he's perfect. He's like, he's, you know, like all drummers are
10:54crazy. Right. Just like, just like goalies. Right. They're not, they're not hockey players. So
10:59it's like drummers are like, yeah. And, uh, Joe's an amazing drummer and I've heard he's an
11:05amazing goalie. I've seen him play goal, but, uh, he's pulled his groin or something.
11:10So he says he can't play goal anymore, which is, uh, which sucks for him.
11:14All right. Well, when, when, when you guys come through Detroit, we're going to have to
11:17get him in some sort of net. I always have my sticks with me, so we will have to do
11:21something.
11:22Well, it's gotta be, I mean, we could probably, they must like, uh, it's out of season. So
11:27there's any rinks where they just melt the ice and you do like, you guys are going to be
11:31three blocks away from the LCA. Maybe I can make a call and we can go to go in there
11:35and
11:35just go on to practice ice. Dude, let's go. That would be cool if we could get never been
11:40there before. Yeah. Do you guys travel with your gear? You guys, I mean, play it all on
11:45the road? Uh, no, but if we did, we would have it. I think we have some hockey sticks with
11:51us. We have to sometimes preface, uh, so they take it at a storage, like golf clubs. I had
11:57to make sure that they took my golf clubs out of storage and in Toronto. And now it's
12:01on the truck. So we want to play golf. My clubs are on the truck. Yeah. And, um, by the
12:06way,
12:06I, I, isn't that the law that you have to travel with your hockey sticks if you're a Canadian
12:11band, correct? Yeah. It's ID. Got the Sherwood. Oh, what's all that? Wow. Yeah. What were
12:19those old sticks? The plastic ones? Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. They were called like super flex or
12:25something. Yeah. Remember they're plastic. You could bend them. So they're like scoops.
12:30Well, no, we used to put them on the, uh, we used to, we used to heat them up on
12:33the, on
12:33the stove. Remember? Oh yeah. Yeah. Of course. You'd bend them up like that. So yeah. Speaking
12:37of golf, you're, you, you're, you're pretty good at golf, aren't you? I golf a lot. My handicap
12:42has gone up a little bit, but I, yeah, I was down to like a six handicap or something, but,
12:47uh, but I love it. I played a lot. I do a lot of golf trips. Me, me and Darren
12:52from, uh,
12:53uh, Steel Panther. We, we put a trip on once a year. So if you play golf, man, you can
12:58come
12:58next year. We do a tournament, uh, and it's my team versus his team. So we got some musicians
13:05come out and, uh, I've, I've, my team has beat his two years in a row. So he's furious.
13:10So that's a stick. So, so what, uh, what, who was on your team?
13:14Uh, well, I got Dean, Dean from the bands on my team. Dave played the first year. He couldn't
13:19play the, uh, this year, but, uh, yeah, then just a bunch of buddies. And it's funny because
13:25like Darren's team, they're all like straight edge and we'll go out for dinner and they're
13:29like water. And my team is like blackout drunk guys aren't showing up. Like, dude, we have
13:35one guy, Gary, who was like a stick. He's like a, he's like a one handicap. He's so good.
13:42And he second day, he didn't show up for dinner. They had to carry him back to his room. He
13:47was
13:47woke up at six 30 in the morning and beat and won his, and won his round to beat the
13:54guy. And I'm like, you can't, I'm like, we're like, you guys can't even beat a bunch
13:58of drunks. So it was pretty fun.
14:00Have you ever golfed with somebody like Alice or anything?
14:04No, you know, we Alice, uh, Cooper, he, he was on one of our songs. So on Savage is our
14:10fifth record. I went and flew to his house in Phoenix. And, uh, so just to be there when
14:17he recorded his parts, it was great. Just went over to his house and his mom was there
14:23and, and he, the morning of, or the day before I flew in and they're like, Oh, we need to
14:28change the time to the afternoon. And I was like, Oh shoot. Okay. Cause originally was
14:33going to be like 10 in the morning or something. I'm like, I wonder what happened. And it was
14:36cause he was golfing golfing. Yeah. So I wish I, I wish I said, Hey, I golf too. I'd love
14:43to go. I probably could have went. He probably would have been like, yeah, yeah, sure. You
14:47can come. Did you knock on his door and say, uh, is Alice here? Yeah. I don't know if he
14:51likes Alice. No, he does. Yeah. Yeah. No, his mom lives with him. So very, very sweet
14:57lady. So I love Alice is such a cool guy, man. He's so down to earth and he's in it
15:02for
15:02all the right reasons. And golf keeps him young, I swear. So I'm going to keep golfing.
15:07Yeah. No. Um, my friend Damon Johnson was on, was in his band for years and he said
15:12that every single night before they went on stage, uh, Damon would get a tap on the
15:16shin from Alice's cane. And Alice would say something like 645 in the lobby. And
15:21that was key. That was their, their code for we're going golfing tomorrow morning.
15:25So it happened all the time. Yeah. Yeah. Damon, he's another sweet guy. I haven't
15:28seen him in a while. Yeah. He's down there in, uh, in Nashville. But, uh, you know,
15:32I heard a conversation the other day and I thought about you guys. Somebody was
15:34talking about walking across Abbey road and they actually walked in the Abbey road
15:39studios and they were like, Oh, you just can't walk in there. So they got kind of
15:43got thrown up, but you guys recorded there, right?
15:46No, we, we, uh, we recorded down the street and the lady that worked at the
15:52studio we were at, um, she used to work at Abbey road. So she's like, you guys want
15:56to go there and just go get a tour. We're like, yeah. So she just hooked it up. So we
16:01went there and did a tour and, and, uh, yeah, it was amazing. We, you know, I played on the
16:06Beatles piano and they took us all around and to where they recorded all their stuff.
16:11It was pretty phenomenal. They were doing the soundtrack for Downton Abbey while we
16:14were there. So my mom was very excited.
16:19Yeah. You know, um, yeah, I thought you guys recorded there for some reason. Did you
16:23guys get a picture to walking across the street?
16:25Yeah. Yeah. And it's, I'll tell you, man, the people, they won't, they'll run you over.
16:29That was exactly what this person was saying.
16:32They'll they're sick of it. They will not slow down. They're just so sick of people
16:36stopping in the middle and take photos. Cause they're just like, Oh yeah. So, uh, yeah,
16:41you'll be very careful when you do that.
16:42Yeah. Yeah, no doubt. And, you know, um, getting back to the EP, cause I wanted to ask
16:47you about this, um, with the EP thing, you know, obviously when you guys started some
16:5020, some years ago, you put records on, you put CDs out in the whole nine yards. And now
16:55is it weird to kind of navigate how people consume music?
16:59Yeah, it's, it's a, it's a, uh, it's, what is it? Uh, you know, it, it's interesting. It's,
17:08I love it. I love it because now the fans have all the control. Um, but you have to, you
17:14really
17:14have to learn how to do this new stuff. I'm not a big fan of the social media. I think
17:18that's,
17:19it's just, it's harmful. It's, it sounds like such a curmudgeon old man thing to say, but,
17:24but man, I mean, every day they're getting, sending us stuff to do for Tik TOK and we got
17:28to do all these trends. And I don't like, this is, this has nothing to do with music,
17:32you know, but it's a new world. You have to adapt or die. So I, you know, and we went
17:40through
17:40everything. I mean, we didn't start on cassettes, but we started on CDs and then we went to, you know,
17:45uh, to downloads, which was so weird. And then finally streaming and now it's the streaming
17:52world. So it's all coming around. I, I, I, I'm really kind of like enjoying it and, and seeing
17:59all the different ways that, to, to make it work. And I find that now we can do stuff ourselves,
18:05which is great. I, the years of being on a major label and feeling like we had no control.
18:11And now it's just like, man, we can do what we want. We pay for our recordings ourselves.
18:15So we can recoup that through selling vinyl and stuff. And it's great.
18:20Yeah. And touring and stuff. Yeah. I forgot about that. Yeah. So you guys, you guys aren't
18:23like, uh, yeah, nobody's holding you down. I mean, as a band, you guys say, Hey, let's
18:28try this that we couldn't do when we were on the record label and you know, whatever you
18:32guys get together. I mean, we, we are our own A&R. I mean, dude, like some of the, like
18:39the
18:39meetings we had, I remember we had to beg for our fifth record. We had to beg to go into
18:44the
18:44studio and we had to bring Howard Benson with us, the producer to fly, fly him to
18:49New York, to sit down at the label in the A&R's office, let them let us record six songs.
18:55And he would just sit there and be like, I don't like the song. I don't like, I don't
19:01like the lyrics and it just tear apart your stuff. And you're like, you're trying not to
19:05get up and just freak out. Right. And be like, F this, I'm outta here. Um, now it's just like,
19:12the four of us sit around going, uh, you really, I really liked this song. Let's record
19:15it. And that's it. That's the end of the conversation.
19:18That's interesting. Yeah. I know. I, I talked to Chris Fane from, uh, formerly from slip
19:23down. This made a lot of news and every day, every, every day I still punch on my Facebook
19:27and there's this story, but, uh, yeah, he told me that Rick Rubin didn't do much.
19:32Oh, right. Cause they did, he did the Iowa. Did they do Iowa with him?
19:36I think it might've been a subliminal versus or something. Yeah. I don't think Rick Rubin
19:42is doing anyone's debut record, but, uh, yeah, but, uh, he, they did some stuff, but, uh, yeah,
19:47that just reminded me when you're talking about Howard Benson, I mean, obviously a legendary
19:50figure in the business and he must, it must've been, I don't know, soul crushing to sit there
19:55and listen to some of the stuff he was saying probably, huh?
19:58It's terrible. I mean, imagine, imagine if you've just like made a bunch of stuff and people
20:01are just like, this is crap. Right.
20:03And, you know, just because they're in a bad mood or they had a weird day, you know,
20:08and you're like, man, I don't need this shit. But, uh, yeah, no, Howard Benson's great. He is,
20:12he is, he's the opposite of Rick Rubin. We, we did four records with him and he, I mean,
20:17he was a massive part of our success, man, man. We had a lot of our biggest hits with Howard
20:23and me
20:23and Howard are great friends. Now we actually, we golf all the time back in, uh, in LA. He's in,
20:28he hits me up. He's a, once every couple of weeks, want to golf, want to go golfing? I'm like,
20:31let's go. So it's good. It's good. It'll reverse back to golfing. Yeah. I didn't realize you guys
20:36worked with him so much, but yeah, he's worked on so many things. Um, you know, you say that he
20:41was
20:41a big part of your success. Did you guys bring songs to him and how much did he like recraft
20:46them
20:46or maybe change things for you guys? Lots. I mean, he would sit in pre-production with us
20:52and be like, why don't you guys go, well, you got to hear, what if you went here and then
20:57the third
20:58one, you went down and just stay on that chord or we went down and we would try it. Yeah.
21:02You know,
21:03he was really involved in a lot of stuff. Great with the vocal stuff. He would sit and I knew
21:08if
21:08he liked the song, he'd want to read the lyrics for us before we record. So he would be like,
21:12let's see the lyrics. And he would read the lyrics and he's like, so what are you trying to say
21:16in
21:16this bridge? And I explain it to him. And sometimes he'd be like, Oh, okay. Or sometimes he'd be like,
21:22I think he can do better. I think, you know what? Let's not record today. Why don't you go back
21:27to
21:27the hotel or whatever and rewrite this. So I would go back and I would just like rewrite it and
21:33I'd be
21:33like, it would be so much better. Then I'd come the next morning. I was like, dude, dude, this is
21:37it.
21:38All right, let's record. So yeah, he was always a big cheerleader and, and the final version,
21:46like when we would hear when everything was done, we were just like always really blown away. We're like,
21:49wow, this is us. This sounds too good. You know, how did you do that? Did you catch yourself
21:58subconsciously writing and fear that he wouldn't like it? No, he was not that kind of guy. It was
22:04more like the A&R that I was worried about. Okay. I can remember getting a call from an A
22:07&R guy being
22:08like, I think, cause I just had this chorus where it's repeated the same line. He's like, well,
22:12and the thing it needs to be more involved. I don't like it's repeating the line. And I said to
22:16him,
22:16I'm like, is this going to be a single? He's like, no. I'm like, well then who cares?
22:21And then he was like, yeah, you're right. And that was the end of it. And I was like, yeah,
22:25like, what are we doing here? Yeah.
22:27No, it's a, I think for me, like, I'm always trying to get approval for others. That's something
22:34probably from when I was a kid. So like for me, I'm always trying to get approval from the band.
22:39And I'm always trying to write a song that the band will hear and go, wow, that's awesome. Or
22:43write, you know, a riff that Dave will be like, that's so good. Or, you know, I'm sure the same
22:49for them. They always, but at the end of the day, like it's usually just the band, the band's just
22:53trying to get approval from the band from one another, which is cool. It's a very pure thing.
22:58Yeah. I guess that's probably at the end of it, that's the, yeah, the purest thing,
23:01because it's like you make music for yourself. Yeah. And that's what you have to do. I mean,
23:07I, I try to remind people it's like, you know, when you started out, Hey, your only fan was like
23:12your mom. So writing songs for your mom. No. So then you get fans and then all of a sudden
23:17everything changes. Well, maybe we should write this kind of song. Cause the fans will like it's
23:21like, no, man, you just got to write how you want to write. And then the fans don't like it.
23:27There's not much you can do. And, but, but there has to be some songs you write where you think,
23:31man, this is going to go over great on stage. Yes. We definitely have songs where like,
23:37like bad girlfriend was that song. Bad girlfriend was a song the label hated. They didn't want it on
23:42the record. We had a fight to get it on the record. And then we had a fight to make
23:46it a single. We
23:46refused to tour because they didn't want to release as a single. And we said, well, we're not going to
23:52tour. We're going to go home. Forget it. They're like, Oh my God. And that came from fan interaction.
23:57We play the song every night on stage. And the fans were like, they'd go nuts. And we're like,
24:02there's something about this song, man. We just didn't know what it was. And we were right.
24:06So we kind of, you know, we revel on that. I was going to say, I never heard of a
24:11band
24:12refusing to tour because the record label would want to release a single. That's great.
24:16Well, they just, they, they didn't like the song, but they want to release a ballad,
24:20like a pop song. We're like, you'll kill us. You'll destroy the band. We have to,
24:23we need a big hit. We need to be rock. We need, we're a rock band. We need a rock
24:27hit. Let's go.
24:28And they, thank God they agreed. Yeah. And it, well, not only did they agree,
24:33but it worked for you guys. Yeah. And we didn't know. Nobody heard it. Anybody that says like,
24:38Oh, I knew that's nah, nobody. Howard didn't either. That was a song that Howard didn't read
24:44the lyrics on that one. Cause when we started tracking that song, the opening line, as you may
24:49know, is my girlfriend's a dick magnet. Yeah. And so Howard's like, all right, let's just sing
24:55a song. So he pushes record and I sing the line and he stops and he's like, no way, man.
25:01There's
25:01no way. I'm like, what do you mean? He's like, no, you're not singing that. I'm like, yeah, no,
25:06that's it. He's like, no, come on. What? Like, there's no way. I'm like, just, I'm like,
25:11just push record. I told him like, just, let's just get this push record. So we blasted through that
25:17song. Nobody knew. That's just a, what a fluke. Dude, that's great. I never heard this before.
25:23You know, the thing I, the thing I think that that song resonates with people is because it's
25:29so real. Every dude has had a girlfriend who's a dick magnet and you know, you go somewhere and
25:35you can't keep her away from other guys. And you know, it's funny too, is I'm just sitting here
25:39talking to you. You guys have a pretty good mix of guys and girl fans, don't you?
25:43It's pretty 50, 50. Yeah. It's we, I remember opening for Motley Crue and Godsmack was the
25:49direct support. And we went on right before Godsmack. And I remember going on stage and all the dudes
25:55were like this waiting for Godsmack and all of their girlfriends or wives were out of their seat
26:01going nuts, wearing bad girlfriend shirts. And we're like, okay, now we just got to figure out
26:05how to get the dudes. Yeah. That's like a, people find it hard to believe, but Buck Cherry's crazy
26:12bitch, I think is liked well more by girls and by guys. Girls love that song.
26:18Yeah. Which is so weird. Right. And same with bad girlfriend when they love, I guess they want to
26:23be a bad girlfriend. I don't know, but it's true. Like that definitely is women love that song. And
26:30yeah, we hit a bit of a wall with the women love the bitch came back too. Yeah. Yeah. Which
26:36is weird,
26:36but we found out that they don't want to wear a shirt that says that. Found out the hard way.
26:42We sold merch and then it wasn't selling well. Is that right? Panties or something? The bitch
26:48came back. The bitch came back. I don't know. I always say we should do more of those shirts. And
26:52no, it's just like, no. That's great. Well, I'll tell you what, we'll wrap things up here with you,
26:58Tyler. I gotta, I gotta ask you a couple more things though. First. So the hockey season hasn't
27:02started. And I just told this story the other day on the radio, how, how I was watching the
27:08Pittsburgh Penguins hoist the Stanley cup with you guys at that hotel here in Detroit. Remember
27:13that back in 18, 17, whatever it was. Yeah. You were in the hotel lobby. God, that was,
27:19that was a brutal night, by the way. I think Dean and I were on the bus with Scotty Austin
27:24to like
27:24three in the morning or something, but that's another story for another time. But so I mean,
27:29the season hasn't even started. Nothing's happening, but what are you thinking about for
27:32this year? Yikes. Well, I'm a Canucks fan. So we just stopped right there. Yeah. You know,
27:39I play hockey all the time with, uh, with Brennan Morrison. You know that? Yes. Who? Oh, dude. And
27:45he was like, that's back in the day, man. That was kind of just like when I used to watch
27:49the
27:49Canucks and try to Morrison play with, uh, with Brewery. Was that after Brewery? I believe,
27:55no, I believe he did. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, dude. That was the time. I mean, they went to the cup.
27:59Yeah.
27:59With, uh, that was amazing. Yeah. I don't know. I, you know, I'm kind of,
28:03I would love to see Canadian team win, man. It's been, I mean, Montreal Canadiens in 93.
28:07It's been 33 years since the Canadian team won. Edmonton's come close. Montreal's looking good.
28:14Yeah. Toronto, who cares? They're never going to win.
28:18How about the Detroit Red Wings? How about them?
28:21I always loved the Detroit Red Wings. I'm always rooting for Detroit.
28:25Uh, nothing like a dumpster fire this summer.
28:29Are they going to do well this year? I don't know. I hope so.
28:32Right now we don't have a GM. We don't know if our captain's coming back. It's kind of a little
28:35bit of a mess.
28:37Yikes. Well, we'll see. We'll see what happens. I mean, Buffalo looks really good.
28:43I mean, they just need, they just need to pull off those training wheels and they can be really good.
28:47They, they, they've lost a couple of key guys this year as well.
28:50So, hey, real fast before I leave, what does that shirt say?
28:55Oh.
28:55That's what I thought. So, yeah, you're not going to believe this, dude. Yeah.
28:59You're not going to believe this.
29:01On the way here, I stopped at a, I stopped at an ATM right down here on 8 Mile.
29:07The woman next to me in the ATM had that shirt on.
29:10That's amazing.
29:11I know. How crazy is that?
29:12This is, I actually got this from Dolly Parton.
29:15I actually took this photo.
29:17You, what?
29:18No, I'm just kidding.
29:20I was going to say, how did that woman have the same exact shirt? That's crazy.
29:24Yeah, exactly. I don't know where I got this. I got, I think a given to me or I got
29:28out of some store.
29:28Yeah. Well, that's too bad. I thought it was only the one and only.
29:31No, that's, I mean, but how insane, how, how like crazy, I mean, just like an hour ago.
29:37Yeah, that's weird. Well, maybe there's something's going on with Dolly.
29:39Maybe that's just the world, the universe.
29:42Yeah.
29:42Maybe we'll go on tour with Dolly Parton.
29:44Yeah, that'd be awesome.
29:46She did. She did do something Motley Crue. Did she not?
29:48Yeah, I think she sang, I want to say, Home Sweet Home.
29:51Yeah, that was it.
29:52Yeah.
29:53She's amazing.
29:54Well, listen, we'll see you guys here on the 23rd. Like I said, Funeral Songs Part 1 is coming out
29:58on September 4th.
29:59And yeah, the 23rd, bring your hockey sticks and we'll see if we can get you guys.
30:04Have you ever been in the LCA yet?
30:06No, I don't think we've ever been there.
30:08So it's really cool.
30:10They have a, they have a practice rink in the rink and they've got their regular rink.
30:13They can, you know, that's where the Pistons and the Red Wings both play and they've got restaurants all around
30:16the concourse.
30:17It's really cool, actually.
30:18Yeah, I'm trying to think.
30:20I'll ask Dean, because we've been to so many different rinks on tour.
30:23You know, like our bucket list has tried to go and watch a game in every single rink.
30:28I think we've gone to almost all of them.
30:30I mean, we had to have been seeing the Red Wings play there.
30:34No, it's nice.
30:35I know, yeah, sometimes it all starts to run together.
30:37But, well, thanks for your time, dude.
30:39Safe travels.
30:40We'll see you here in a couple weeks.
30:41Yeah, I'll see you in a couple weeks, man.
30:43Good to see you.
