00:00it's a crazy thing even just telling people you're in a rock band what do you do you know you meet
00:04people at a coffee shop or at a bar or wherever i play in a rock band it just feels so surreal
00:09and funny yeah it's like you play local i'm like no i was in only if it's only if it's
00:14welcome to this episode of talking rock with meltdown don't forget to follow the audio only
00:25talking rock podcast on all podcast platforms and now it's time for today's conversation here's
00:32meltdown hey guys once again meltdown here with uh jake and joe from the autumn kings are going to
00:37be in town uh doing a riff fest on september 20th thanks for coming back to the studio guys thank
00:41you for having us uh first jake we got to talk about that hat now show the show that hat off
00:45look at that thing let's go oh gee oh gee low classic uh a riff hat from the back in the day
00:51that's we've tried to figure out either late 80s or early 90s but tell us where you got that from
00:56yeah we got it from joe's brother justin owns a shop in windsor's to cross the pond here called
01:00bosons bosons and i don't know where where did he cop this they thrift and they go crazy i don't even
01:06know where he found that but they they go all over the place from windsor to toronto and they found it
01:10they're like you got to bring this i'm like absolutely and what's the other place again uh bosons
01:14bosons yeah b-o-s-u-n-s all right so they got more cool swag like that a ton of stuff like that yeah
01:20so jace gonna wear that uh for riff fest i think yeah okay wearing it it must happen i know you're
01:25not wearing you're not wearing hats you're not a hacker i don't wear hats so i will represent
01:29the og riff man that's crazy like 35 40 years riff's been just doing it killing it well actually
01:3553 is it 53 now we gotta find that shirt that you said you have a similar logo yeah i do have that
01:40yeah i got it at home somewhere i gotta dig it out but uh yeah so sick that's great my cart gave me
01:45that shirt with the uh and someone just said that's supposedly ted nugent yeah that makes sense
01:50the silhouette of ted so that's it yeah i'll have to ask him about that so so what's going on with
01:56you guys man everything we just finished a great two and a half week tour across the u.s with nonpoint
02:01yeah nonpoint yeah super cool dudes they took us under their wing and upon a burning body too very
02:07heavy band oh yeah yeah yeah and now gearing up for the almighty riff fest coming up and then
02:12touring with hinder and hollywood undead doing a few headlines all across america so
02:17it's ramping up to be a pretty crazy fall and since i talked to you guys last you went over
02:21to europe correct yes we went to europe yeah i think we talked the week before we left yeah that's
02:26great it was amazing it was amazing yeah it really was it was a different level there actually especially
02:30when you got to eastern europe i mean when we went to warsaw we had people cross the border from
02:34ukraine and belarus to see us play and um there's like a different they wear it on their sleeve
02:40rock and they do here in america too but it was visceral wouldn't you say it felt like a deep
02:45visceral 100 there were people that followed followed us throughout the whole tour from day
02:49one to the last show it was it was insane we'd never seen anything like that to be honest yeah
02:54there's a real aura like in their eyes the perception of when an american band comes to play
02:58europe it means a lot to them well they couldn't believe it they're like we've been waiting years
03:02for you guys to get here we're like oh my gosh really yeah yeah it's pretty insane so we're
03:07already counting down the days till we can get back to europe and play now i love go ahead i'm
03:11sorry go ahead i was gonna say no they love they love rock there the way that you know we love country
03:15and rap in the u.s and in canada the rock is still very much at the forefront for them well i think what
03:21happens here like i remember talking to zoltan from five finger and you know he grew up and they'd
03:26have to drive two or three hours to a rock show but they didn't come around very often so when they
03:30came around you went and saw them yes and here it's like you know if you miss them here you know pine
03:34now they might play you come around yeah somewhere else right yes that's exactly and so you know but
03:38yeah the the rock fans are big over there in europe oh my god so big over there yeah so it's great so
03:43i mean on our hit list right now it's europe and america just non-stop yeah how long was that that
03:48was that tour that was a three week about a three week tour and a half yeah we did eight countries we
03:53went switzerland france wow czech republic austria poland germany seven cities in germany now did you take
03:59did you take your parents uh no my parents actually met up they actually met up with us
04:04my dad was so stoked paris's favorite place on earth you get my dad on a paris run he'll just
04:09tell you everything man i love paris uh well i've only seen the eiffel tower in vegas but i can just
04:15imagine paris is just like it very similar very similar it's insane yeah they followed us around and
04:20we've got just a great support system which helps make this crazy life a little bit more smooth and
04:24my brother met with us in czech republic and prog in prog yeah wow that hat yeah the family crossing
04:29the seas yeah yeah it's that immigrant upbringing yeah what a great trip man it's so cool oh 10 out
04:35of 10 and we ended up going to we went to south korea and japan and singapore along the way too yeah
04:40wow in may and june we played for the u.s military awesome over there yeah and it was awesome just to
04:46play for the americans that are overseas just doing so much to keep us safe at home and they see things
04:52that you know we take for granted we don't even know about and um they don't have the day-to-day
04:57amenities that we have over here so for us to get to play for them over there it means so much to them
05:02too kind of like with the european fans exactly they love it and then we've gotten to see so much
05:05of the world this year too like singapore who gets to go to singapore yeah i know that's for sure it was
05:10crazy yeah so um so who did you play with uh for the uh for the military was just you guys yeah it was
05:16headline oh we headlined everywhere yeah japan south korea did i miss any japan south korea and singapore
05:21that was it yeah so that's insane yeah got to fly overseas a lot of jet lag this year yeah a lot
05:26of long flights a lot of long flights well i've said it before you get paid to travel you play for
05:31free oh right but you know what it i wouldn't trade it for the world no like it's a crazy thing even
05:38just telling people you're in a rock band what do you do you know you meet people at a coffee shop
05:43or a bar or wherever i play in a rock band it just feels so surreal and funny yeah just like you play
05:48local i'm like no i was in japan only if it's riff only if it's riffraff yeah yeah it's funny because
05:54i just met a guy there today and he's like what do you do for a living and i've been on the radio for
05:5735 years and they find that really intriguing and he was an accountant so it's like he just wanted to
06:01talk about what i did yeah yeah right that's right and it sort of makes you feel uncomfortable
06:04because you know you're on radio and everyone hears meltdown but you just think of it as day-to-day
06:09part of what you do well it is interesting it is fun and i get to do things other people don't get to do
06:13so it's like you know i think people are interested in it it's fun it is what you make of it of course
06:17yeah yeah 100 and we love it and next year we're planning to put out the the new record yeah let's
06:23talk about that so so go ahead you open up the you open it up oh yeah yeah yeah absolutely man um so
06:28a couple of the singles have been out already sleep from dead hellbound and thanks for name dropping
06:33me by the way yeah yeah yeah headed for a meltdown baby headed for a meltdown anyways i digress but
06:41no it's true shout out meltdown yeah i had to think about that yeah yeah yeah yeah and um and so yeah
06:46the record's going to be out uh next year i want to tease the name so badly i don't know if we're in
06:51a position we'll come back when we're allowed okay yeah we'll come back when we're allowed can you
06:55say when uh it's going to be early early 2026 most likely yeah yeah probably february march at some
07:01point it's done in the can done in the can done in the can are you guys playing anything off it
07:05that or not yet we'll be playing the singles that are already out so we'll be playing sleep
07:09hellbound yeah snake charmer uh and snake charmer yeah yeah so we'll be playing those three um and
07:14hellbound is obviously back at radio doing a lot of work right now yeah there'll probably be one more
07:20radio single before the record comes out and how many songs are on the record uh it'll be 11 songs
07:24on the record okay full-blown record full-blown record yeah full-blown record of original stuff and
07:29already the impatient musician in us is like okay let's get started on the next record we haven't
07:35written enough yet it's just it's never ending in the brain you know it's funny once you get to
07:40playing live on a record that's out let's say you play the day the record comes out your mind is like
07:46already a year graduated from that because you've had those ideas incubating for so long you've been
07:52marinating kind of making them come to life you're already focused on what's coming next but
07:57obviously we have the mental discipline to you know understand that fans haven't heard those songs
08:02take a step back for sure take the time even if it's two three years you know shine down when they
08:06do world tours it's like three years on the same music right so maybe to them it feels like they've
08:11been doing it for so long but to all these people they're playing for it's the first time they get
08:15to experience it live at least so yeah that's great it's never ending yeah you say you got 11 songs so
08:20how many how many you know maybe fell through the cracks or do you have kind of in the back burner
08:24oh my gosh well for the this record quite a few yeah it's really interesting because different
08:30artists have different ways of approaching building a record and some will write 100 songs and then
08:36whittle it down to 25 and then whittle it down again to their best 10 or 15. we used to be like that
08:41but you correct me if you see it differently i think lately it's been we sort of know right away if
08:46we know when an idea is gonna work so we don't try to pursue a fully written song and then gather
08:52100 fully written songs and whittle it down we like to nip it in the bud right then and there if
08:56is this going to turn into something and if it's not we just ditch it right away 100 agree save
09:00ourselves the risking getting emotionally attached to an idea that's not actually that great so we
09:06ended up writing i don't know maybe 25 30 songs for this record but we really got down to 11 you know
09:12some people try to make it look easy like i don't know where the inspiration comes from
09:15dude no i just can't be a liar your head on the wall it's the hardest thing writing a song that
09:20you're happy with yeah man yeah none just fell in our lap we're like oh my god full song yeah full
09:26song and it's written so it's it's a labor of love well where did you uh record these songs we did um
09:31i record a good part of it at home my home studio joe and i we build the ideas and then we work with
09:36our long-standing homeboy marty back actually in windsor slr which is pretty amazing in windsor i mean
09:42he'd probably be the only guy i would say that i would trust as a producer in windsor
09:46but he is the the fact that you found a guy like that in windsor is crazy usually you find those
09:51guys in toronto or la or new york or nashville so we've actually our entire catalog of songs has
09:57been done with marty at slr studios for 10 years mixed mastered produced and i co-produced with marty
10:03and he's just an unbelievable guy unbelievable i was gonna say because uh jay ruston is from
10:07leamington jay ruston yeah jay ruston he does a lot of the rock records he does like all the steel
10:12panther records and he does like no sax and it's more the more the rocks of stone stone sour
10:17oh what still there he lives in leamington uh he's from leamington he actually went to school with uh
10:21mccarty no way david mccarty yeah and it's funny because i've known jay for about eight years but i've
10:27never met him but i'll text him and i'll say hey dude give me a because i'll be interviewing a band
10:31he's worked with or something yeah and he's worked with a lot of bands mostly rock bands
10:34man what a small world anytime we hear about someone who's from like our neck yeah right it's
10:39like mind-blowing yeah i know jay ruston why i gotta look this guy up after yeah jay's done a lot of
10:43stuff in the uh in the rock world um what do you guys consider your your music or your genre what what
10:49do you what do you what do you call your band like like yeah like we will usually say the starting
10:54point we give everyone is lincoln park and fallout boy had a baby right which is currently where it's at
10:58but obviously that doesn't encapsulate the whole musical spectrum of what we like and listen to
11:02so i would say we're somewhere um on this equator between rock and we you know rock guys struggle
11:09to use the word pop but we have melodic memorable sort of poppy sensibilities yeah yeah those sorts
11:15of sensibilities but i would say lately we've actually leaned much more into our rock roots like
11:19this next record is heavy it's heavy it's the heaviest we've gone yeah so i would say we are a
11:25you know a stadium arena rock band is probably the best place to categorize us but we have tinges
11:30of metal like we will incorporate little bits of lamb of god and metallica on certain pieces of our
11:35riffs and then there's rap and then there's alternative and some of those notes too so it's
11:39yeah a little all over the place you know the every artist wants to believe that you can't categorize
11:44their music we want we want to feel special but for us i could say it's kind of hard yeah you know
11:49we're a rock band and we we try to borrow from everything but we're a rock band at the end of the day
11:53when you see us live a fan is going to say that was a great rock concert okay unmistakably and of
11:58course you know september 20th like we were talking about with uh with uh riff fest and uh that's
12:02gonna be killer and you know i think since the last time i talked to you guys i interviewed paul from
12:06the tragically hip i don't think i talked to you guys before that no i don't think so yeah he was
12:10great so i mean you know uh you started talking about all your stuff but so what about what canadian
12:16bands do you guys draw influence from since you are basically from windsor yeah go ahead joe three two one say
12:21it uh billy talent billy talent yeah yeah billy talent's number one three days grace too three
12:26days and they're real they're coming back doing big things billy talent three days grace let me say
12:33it blasphemy nickelback yeah we do well three days grace of course is playing riff fest have you met
12:39those guys yeah uh i'm i met yeah this is crazy i shouldn't be saying this when i'm talking to the
12:44riff but i snuck an internship with 89x when they were years ago the windsor detroit station when i was like 17
12:50and uh it was so bad i hustled my way into it gave him this whole sales pitch if i'd be the best
12:56employee and i only did it because i'd get meet and greet with three days grace met them took the
13:01picture and quit right after so bad we have the picture we posted i have the picture yeah so we met
13:06them once before um haven't met adam yet though so really hoping we'll get the opportunity to do
13:11that yeah just like with the rest of canadians they're really hard to deal with
13:14super diva yeah no i mean they're so canadian it's like adam leaves the band that comes back
13:22in they're like well we're gonna keep the other lead singer too it's like okay let's just right i
13:26mean seriously it's like sorry guys how canadian is that it's so accommodating yeah from like three
13:30hours from us where were they they're from they're from toronto yeah just north yeah yeah it's just
13:36awesome yeah billy talent for us is the big one um and i don't know they sort of cracked in america
13:42but i don't think they really hit it right yeah the way nickelbacker three days grace did
13:45but ian desaw that guitarist i'd say probably my number one guitar influence ben two vocals for
13:50me it's yeah they're a really special band you guys running the tea party guys yeah we run it to
13:55jeff burroughs yeah i see jeff i i i we followed each other on his socials and i saw him at a concert
14:00and i just walked up to him i don't think he knew who i was i'm like hey i felt like oh my god he gave
14:03me a hug yeah that was the last time i saw him yeah he's you know what he's so involved locally
14:08with charities yeah he really is a good man he gives a lot back to his community and you know
14:14he definitely gave us good tips and advice in the beginning of starting our career he's actually from
14:18la salle but the exact town that i grew up in so really small world and they're a very unique band
14:23too we got to play with them uh at caesar's windsor about six years ago yeah yeah that's cool dudes and
14:28now but now you're here in royal oak right i'm here in royal oak michigan now yes sir yeah you just got
14:32married so tell me about that i did i just got married yes you did yeah thank you bro just came back
14:38yesterday from honeymoon we went to uh get some beach and ocean vibes that's awesome out of the
14:43country yeah it's awesome man you know i always tell people this kind of life is very strange and
14:49foreign especially if you're not from you know you have detroit rock city but it's not in this day and
14:54age like a music hub the way la or nashville or new york is and so i remember when i would go on dates
15:00with girls before i met my wife when you tell them you do music it's very hard for them to understand
15:05their instinct is to say oh that's great so what's your real job or what's your backup plan
15:10right they don't get it and delaney i mean she's a she was a d1 soccer athlete she's from wyoming
15:15actually a lot of places the place with more cows than humans that's right i love it she understands
15:21sacrifice and so when i explained to her what i did she completely understood and that's a very hard
15:28thing to find it's a very hard thing to find someone who supports you so i didn't go into a marriage
15:32lightly that was a decision i took seriously and i couldn't be happier with it well i told my wife
15:37we got married 25 years ago i ride harley davisons and play hockey if you're good with that then we're
15:41gonna be fine there you go i got my harley in the garage and i'm playing hockey in the morning
15:45maybe i'll go ride tonight i don't know i love it i love it and it works yeah you got yeah you got
15:50to lay down the law right away that's my tip 100 100 joe you married i'm not married but i'm uh been
15:55with my girl for 10 years okay you got to lay down the law oh tell her you ride harley davisons and play
16:00hockey i say it very quietly but i say it in very canadian fashion yeah sorry but i say behind her
16:05back she doesn't hear me but i do say it i say it out loud somewhere that's good man well that's
16:10killer well thank you guys so much for coming in um the record's gonna drop sometime next year do you
16:14guys have uh any tour plans or is that kind of in the works it's something you can't say or yeah it's
16:19uh it's not announced yet but we're gonna be doing i'll say this we'll be doing a five week
16:23big us-wide tour oh awesome next spring yeah with a band that i think a lot of your fans might know i love
16:29uh i love when i talk to bands and i can't say anything about that coming up right dude i have
16:34us off camera yeah off camera otherwise i'm gonna hear it from kurt and jason our whole team
16:38why did you tell meltdown i mean we use his name in a song why can't we always tease it it's so funny
16:43you can't imagine who did i talk to i talked to um uh uh johannes from uh avatar he's like oh the
16:50record's coming out on a very special day but i can't tell you what say now it's been released
16:53it's been revealed on halloween you know it's like oh okay sacred yeah but he couldn't tell
16:58me at the time you know and the whole thing the tease yeah exactly it's so so yeah you guys got
17:03some shows coming up here probably take a break around the holidays and yep 2026 gonna be big for
17:08the autumn kings 2026 gonna be big yeah it's gonna be a lot of touring it's crazy how long it takes to
17:13really in rock you see it with bands like skillet is one example that comes to mind or even shine
17:18down when second chance came out it was 10 years of grinding before they really saw success and for
17:24us it feels like now we're just hitting that point where a lot of people are starting to know the band
17:28country ride and worldwide and momentum tours record deal you know radio support and radio love
17:34it it feels pretty surreal and it's so great to be back home talking with you right now on a station
17:39that we grew up listening to and copped a hat from a vintage shop from the late 80s that's proof
17:45that's wild that is killer man so well thank you guys once again for stopping down we'll see you
17:49here in uh in just a couple weeks at uh riff fest can hardly wait september yes it's gonna be great
17:54can't wait thank you brother
