00:31Good afternoon and welcome to Countdown Studio.
00:34Now in just a few days' time, something wicked will happen just down the road here, next door to us
00:39in Manchester.
00:40Yes, at the Manchester's Palace Theatre.
00:43From this Thursday, the musical Wicked will kick off at a nine-week run.
00:48And of course it came from the States a long time ago and has been a huge hit, not just
00:55on Broadway, but also in London's West End.
00:57It was based on the novel Wicked, the Life and Times of the Wicked, Witch of the West, which of
01:03course was hooked into The Wizard of Oz and got me to thinking about musicals.
01:09Do you have a favourite, Rachel?
01:12Well, I've seen the film The Sound of Music so many times and my mum and I actually went to
01:17see Connie when she was in it in the West End.
01:19She was brilliant.
01:20She is brilliant.
01:21We loved it.
01:21So that's the top one.
01:23But I really want to go and see Matilda as well.
01:24That's on my list.
01:26Matilda.
01:26Matilda, yeah, Matilda.
01:27It's Tim Minchin, his musical.
01:31I hope you can.
01:31It's top of my list of ones I want to see.
01:33I'm a stranger to that, but I'm sure it'll be marvellous.
01:35But right now we've got to welcome back Jen Stedman, now on seven wins after beating Ned French from Box
01:43in Wiltshire.
01:44And now you're after your eighth win, which will of course make you an Octo Champ.
01:48So great good luck on that quest.
01:52Thank you very much.
01:52First of all, you've got to roll over Ross Lander, a business analyst from Huddersfield, whose six-year-old daughter
01:59Ruby, I hope, is watching.
02:01And indeed, I imagine Ross hopes she's watching too, because she's an enormous fan of Countdown.
02:07Is that right, Ross?
02:08That's right, yes.
02:08She loves to play along at home.
02:10She's not too good at the numbers yet, but she does like to have a go at the letters.
02:14And she comes up with ten decent words?
02:16She's been known to get her five-letter words now and again.
02:18Good for her.
02:19Well done.
02:20She's only just six.
02:20Well, let's hope you get a couple of five letters, because I'll tell you what, you'll need them against Jen
02:25Stedman.
02:26Let's have a big round of applause for Ross Lander and our very own Jen Stedman.
02:31And of course, over in the corner, yes, Susie's with us again.
02:34And for the last time on this particular sort of round of Countdown, the wonderful, wonderful Connie Fisher.
02:43But now, it's time to begin the business of the day.
02:47Jen, would you be so kind, letters game?

13:46Sheathed as she is in something that looks like the starry, starry night.
13:50A very fabulous dress.
13:52I'm like a glitter ball today.
13:53Sky at night.
13:55Well, I suppose you were talking about musicals.
13:58And I felt that I couldn't come on count and not talk about the sound of music.
14:02And of course, I was voted as Maria.
14:04And I enjoyed that over the course of five years playing Maria.
14:07And even now, when I'm walking down the street, people shout, you know, Maria.
14:11And I stop and I turn and I look at them and chat to them.
14:14Um, but there've been a few cases of mistaken identity over the past seven years.
14:18And one of them, uh, had to be when somebody in the street thought that I was Anne Hathaway.
14:23And I was quite, um, well, I was really, uh, I thought it was a massive compliment to be called
14:29Anne Hathaway.
14:29Until I realized they thought I was Anne Hathaway after she'd shaved her head in the Les Mis movie.
14:35Uh, but the best case of mistaken identity, I think, was on a flight to New York.
14:40And I was with my husband at the time.
14:42And this flight attendant came to our economy seats.
14:45And he said, uh, OMG, are you?
14:48He was, like, in disbelief.
14:49He was like, you are so not, are you?
14:51You are.
14:52Oh, no, am I?
14:53You totally are.
14:54So, I didn't know who I was, really.
14:57But I followed him to first class because that's what he told me to do.
15:01And so, my husband, Jeremy, and I followed him to the first class bar.
15:04And we enjoyed a few glasses of champagne.
15:07Probably about a bottle of champagne later.
15:09This lovely flight attendant, all flustered.
15:12He came back and asked us if we were having a good time.
15:15And said, you know, I just loved you in that, mmm.
15:18I thought, musical?
15:19He said, no, movie.
15:22I was like, right, I haven't done a movie.
15:24So, I looked at my husband and he was like, who does he think you are?
15:28He said, you're well known a rider, aren't you?
15:32Really?
15:33Brilliant start.
15:36Very good.

24:25Five.
24:26Five.
24:27Just four.
24:29And your four.
24:30Gout.
24:31Yes, Jen.
24:32Tutie.
24:33And?
24:35A tutie.
24:36Somebody who's tutored.
24:38Yeah.
24:38And in the corner?
24:39I think it's absolutely fine.
24:40I struggled.
24:42I struggled.
24:43Gout was the only one I spotted, but nothing original.
24:46All right, Susie.
24:47Gout, tutie is absolutely fine.
24:50I was looking at gutie, which is a northern word for a plimsoll, but it's with a Y at
24:54the end in the singular.
24:56I see.
24:56All right.
24:57Tough enough.
24:5895 to 68.
25:00But Susie, back to you for your wonderful origin of words.
25:07Well, I'm going to talk about the origins of the word prevaricate.
25:10I've been reading a great book by Charles Earl Funk, which was written in the 60s.
25:14But it means to speak or act in an evasive way.
25:17And if I say egg-legged, hubble-hocked, or nonny-kneed, I'm going to give you a clue.
25:22So if a cowboy had been in the streets of Rome in the days of Caesar, any spectator
25:26seeing his stereotypical bandy legs would have called him a prevaricator.
25:32Bandy legs and too much riding, obviously.
25:34And that's what the term meant.
25:36It was a bow-legged person or one who, because of his crooked limbs, was unable to walk in
25:42a straight line.
25:44And the term came to be used in Roman courts of law, and it was applied to a prosecutor
25:48who was supposed to be representing one party, but actually made a secret agreement with the
25:52other party, and so betrayed his own client.
25:57In other words, figuratively speaking, he didn't walk straight, but he straddled the fence.
26:01And so prevarication came to be a false accusation or a false defence.
26:05And it was that type of crookedness, or evasiveness, if you like, an all-round falsehood, which marked
26:11the first prevaricators.
26:13So not all of them need to be bandy-legged these days, but that's where it comes from.
26:17That's great stuff.
26:18Prevaricators.
26:20Very good.
26:2295 to 68.
26:23My word, Ross.
26:24Uphill battle now.
26:25It's a letters game for you.
26:28A constant, please, Rachel.
26:29Thank you, Ross.
26:30D.
26:31And a vowel.
26:32Vowel.
26:33I.
26:34And a consonant.
26:36R.
26:38And a vowel.
26:40A.
26:41A consonant.
26:44Z.
26:46A vowel, please.
26:48I.
26:51A consonant, please.
26:53T.
26:55A vowel.
26:58E.
26:59And a final consonant, please.
27:01And a final B.
27:03Stand by.
27:05BEEPING
27:35Yes, Ross.
27:35Eight.
27:36An eight.
27:37Eight as well.
27:38Two eights.
27:39Ross.
27:40Diatribe.
27:42Yes.
27:43Same word.
27:43Jen's got the same.
27:46Diatribe.
27:47And in the corner, young Connie Fisher.
27:50What have you got?
27:52I've baited.
27:53Again, second time this week.
27:55Keeps coming up for me.
27:56Baited.
27:56Baited.
27:57Very good.
27:57Susie?
27:58Yeah, diatribe for me as well.
28:00Very good.
28:00Yeah.
28:00All right.
28:02Ah, 103.
28:03She couldn't keep away from that 100, could she?
28:06103 to 76.
28:08And Jen, your letters game again.
28:10Consonant, please.
28:11Thank you, Jen.
28:12D.
28:13And another.
28:14S.
28:16And another.
28:18Y.
28:20And a vowel.
28:22A.
28:24And another.

28:27And another.
28:29I.
28:30And a consonant.
28:33D.
28:34And another.
28:36R.
28:38And a vowel, please.
28:40And the last one.
28:42A.
28:42Countdown.
28:46Countdown.
29:14Very good.
29:15Jen?
29:15Six.
29:16Six.
29:17What about Ross?
29:19Jen?
29:19Radios.
29:20And Ross.
29:21Same word.
29:22Two radios.
29:24Very good.
29:26Now then you two, Connie and Susie.
29:29Raids.
29:30That was the only one that I had, only a five.
29:32All right.
29:33Susie?
29:34Sordid.
29:35Sordid?
29:36Sorry.
29:36You say it so quietly.
29:38Such a nasty word.
29:39Sordid.
29:40Very good.
29:41109 to 82.
29:42So, Ross, last numbers game and there's Rachel poised for you.
29:47Might as well go out with a bang and I'll have four large again, please.
29:49Four large.
29:50Thank you, Ross.
29:51And two small ones again and we'll see if we can get something trickier than the last one.
29:54And for this round, the two small ones are seven and two.
29:58And the four large, 25, 100, 50 and 75.
30:01And the target to reach 404.
30:05404.
30:06All right.
30:08How many days do you feel?
30:08The middle?
30:16Yeah.
30:34We're working.
30:36You made three of those.
30:37Yes, Ross, 404.
30:39404, thank you, Jen.
30:40404, I think, not written down.
30:43Jen?
30:45Oh, dear, this is a bit of a shock for the system.
30:48Yes.
30:48Tell us about it.
30:497 minus 2 is 5.
30:525.
30:54Times 75.
30:56Times 75 is 375.
31:00Add the 25.
31:02Oh, no, I think I've gone wrong.
31:06That's a bit of a first.
31:07My word, Ross, look at this.
31:09Now then, Ross, come on.
31:11100 over 50 is 2.
31:13100 over 50 is 2.
31:15Add the 75 and the 25.
31:17Add the 75 and add the 25 for 100.
31:20And I've gone wrong as well.
31:23Come to pressure.
31:24All right, we're going to turn to she who never fails us.
31:28Is it that tricky?
31:30Yeah, tricky one.
31:31I will have another quick look.
31:32I'll leave that with you.
31:33All right, so here we are.
31:35Final round, chaps.
31:36Jen on 109.
31:37Ross on 82.
31:39And I think, you know, Jen, in all her victories, has never had such a close-run thing, even though
31:45it's a few behind.
31:47Fingers on buzzers, please, Jen and Ross.
31:49Let's have today's countdown conundrum.
31:57Yes, Jen?
31:58Steadfast.
31:59Steadfast.
32:00Let's see whether you're right.
32:02Steadfast.
32:03Steadfast.
32:03Oh, well done.
32:04Well done.
32:10Well done.
32:11Bit of a rocky moment there.
32:13But well done.
32:14Well played, Ross, too.
32:15Good score against Jen.
32:17Excellent score, 82 points.
32:18So it's back to little Ruby, who I'm sure is hugging herself with pleasure, having seen
32:25Dad on television.
32:26She's delighted.
32:26And you're taking back to her your goodie bag back to Huddersfield and with our best wishes.
32:33Great stuff.
32:33Yes, thank you.
32:34Now, young lady, we're propelling you into the future.
32:37Later on in the year, we shall see you back.
32:39And I think we've got high hopes for you.
32:42Brilliant stuff.
32:43Thank you very much.
32:43I hope that Rachel will have trotted everything up and she's going to have some more news
32:47for us in a second.
32:48Susie, we shall see you tomorrow.
32:51But sadly, Connie, we won't.
32:53But now that you've been here twice, you've enjoyed it both times.
32:57Please diarise it throughout the year and every year.
33:00I would love to.
33:02It's been a great pleasure.
33:02Absolutely love it on Countdown.
33:04Brilliant stuff.
33:04And tomorrow, I think we've got Jodie Kidd joining us.
33:08So that's an exciting prospect.
33:10But lovely to have you.
33:11Lovely to have you.
33:11Thanks, Nick.
33:13Great stuff.
33:14So, tell us about Miss Stedman.
33:17Well, she's set some records.
33:19Yes.
33:19She's been absolutely fantastic.
33:20Earlier in her run, I said she was possibly the best female we've ever had.
33:24Yes.
33:24And she's proved that because she's the first female to score eight centuries.
33:28She's got the highest ever score for a girl, which is 130.
33:31And she's actually the third highest total scorer ever in Countdown.
33:35Isn't that something?
33:36Well done.
33:41Well done.
33:43Well done.
33:44That is something really to keep our eye on for later in the year.
33:49Average of 119.
33:51Brilliant.
33:52It's just fantastic.
33:53Yeah.
33:53So it's going to be in a very, very exciting finals this year.
33:56Indeed it is.
33:57But the good news is for everyone else at home, if they were thinking of coming on,
33:59she's out the way for a while.
34:00Well, it's a good time to get your application in.
34:03It's true, yes.
34:03A lot of people are very relieved not to be running up against you, Jen.
34:08Brilliant stuff.
34:09Anyway, see you tomorrow.
34:10See you tomorrow.
34:10And we shall see you tomorrow.
34:12Jodie can be here, but Jen Stedman won't.
34:15But that doesn't mean that we're not going to have another great Countdown session
34:18here in the studio.
34:20Will you join us then?
34:21You'll be sure of it.
34:22Good afternoon.
