00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio on the eve of the final of the greatest countdown competition ever.
00:40And whoever wins tomorrow will be the ultimate all-time world's greatest countdown champion.
00:47So today we've got two great semi-finalists, one of whom tomorrow will meet Jack Hurst.
00:56Gentlemen, yes, indeed.
00:58And now there follows one of the strangest links I've ever been asked to deliver.
01:03Allow me to reach for my script, which says it was on this very day, last year, that scientists studying
01:10fossils found in New Zealand discovered two new species of penguin.
01:15They were prehistoric and they were known as Kairuku Waitaki and Kairuku Grebnefi and they stood out, wait for it,
01:25four feet tall, even bigger than your cats.
01:28I don't think it's that strange a link, though.
01:30You've got penguins.
01:31I love penguins.
01:32They mate for life.
01:33I don't think it's quite sweet.
01:35And then the mum obviously lays the egg, then the dad looks after it.
01:37The mum goes off swimming around and she comes back.
01:41And I don't want to sound offensive to penguins, but I can't tell them apart, but somehow she does.
01:46But it's a bit like us and our ex-champions.
01:48You know, go away for periods of time and always find their way back to us.
01:52They do indeed.
01:53Amazing endurance.
01:54Just like our contestants as well.
01:56Anyway, there we are.
01:56So your back, lads, how's it been?
01:58Yes?
01:59Let's see how it's going to be.
02:01One of you is going to meet Jack Hurst tomorrow and between Jack Hurst and one of you there will
02:07come a champion.
02:09Now then, who have we got?
02:09We've got John O'Neill, lives in Raynham, London, semi-finalist back in 2005, a catastrophe risk analyst.
02:18And in the semi-final, after ending Jack Worsley's unbeaten record on a crucial conundrum with a score of 122.
02:26Brilliant.
02:27The only person left in the competition who isn't a math student from Cambridge.
02:31At Cambridge, yeah.
02:32I'm well aware of that.
02:33Brilliant stuff.
02:34And you are meeting today Connor Travers, and you may not know this, but you both auditioned for Countdown on
02:42the same day back in 2004.
02:45Yeah, we did work that out, actually.
02:46And look, we've known each other ever since, but we didn't know each other at the time.
02:49Yeah, extraordinary.
02:51It's kind of like fate.
02:52Indeed.
02:52And what about Connor?
02:54Youngest ever series winner, aged just 14, now at St. John's College, Cambridge.
02:59Studying maths, as we hinted at, you beat Kirk Bevins with another perfect maximum game, a score of 119 out
03:07of 119.
03:08Record is now 19 wins from 20 games.
03:12So you've tasted defeat once.
03:14Yep.
03:15Let's see how you're going to do on today.
03:16Huge round of applause for these two bright guys, John and Connor.
03:25John and Connor.
03:27Wonderful.
03:28I'm really looking forward to today.
03:30Susie, how are you?
03:33Very tense.
03:34Braced for this one?
03:35I am very braced, yes.
03:37Fortunately, you've got sitting next to you, somebody who is always so relaxed and is a joy to be with
03:43none other than Jenny Eclare, a stand-up comic, as we know, author, actress, and a general sort of polymath,
03:51because she's shown tremendous skill.
03:53Trimavest.
03:54This week.
03:54Yes.
03:55Pulling out some beautiful words, none of which actually won, but they were interesting.
04:01Let's get this game underway.
04:03Come along.
04:04John, off you go.
04:06All right, Rachel.
04:06Hi again, John.
04:07I know you're going for me because you don't want a Cambridge person to win it.
04:09Oh, yeah.
04:10I won't tell him, though.
04:11I'm relying on you to help me.
04:13Can I start with Avel, please?

07:06Very good.
07:07Yeah, FireDog is one of those, um, supports that you get for logs in an open fire.
07:11Pop logs on in an open fire, yeah.
07:13What else have we got over there?

10:38They might be the maths students, but I know that you are amazing at this game.
10:41Okay, so let's see if we can show off your tricks.
10:44And for this round, the small ones are four and five, and you're four large.

11:23No, finally.
11:23No, mere thanks.
11:24Neither Colombi.
11:24You
11:24And the 300, 500, 50, forte.
11:26John three nine one. Yeah, and Connor three nine one. Okay, John
11:31Okay
11:3225 plus 50 is 75 25 plus 50 75 divide that by the other 75 for one
11:39Subtract that from 100 100 minus one ninety nine multiply that by four three nine six and then subtract the
11:45other five
11:45Nicely done very tidy very good corner the same way same route. You're happy John. Well done. Well done both
11:53of you
11:58So
12:00Dead heat 40 points each but now we turn to Jenny now then Jenny which of your many skills and
12:06attributes would you like to talk about now?
12:08I'm just trying to think of whether I have any no. I'm sort of so
12:12in awe of the people I've met this week the contestants
12:17extraordinary and I think that they're going to be
12:20mobbed on the streets
12:22Not by girls by academics
12:24It's not gonna be that exciting for you and I just want to give you a little glimpse into that
12:29sort of world
12:30I do remember because I was a drama school student here
12:33I came back many years later thinking I was slightly on the ladder to success
12:39and I was on the steps of the BBC in Manchester and
12:42and an autograph hunter profit his book and
12:47Obviously, I thought well he wants my water go if I duly wrote my name
12:51Large letters in his autograph book at which point he looked at it looked again went
12:56No, I don't want that
12:59And that's true
13:00It's a terrible thing to happen
13:01Wasn't it dreadful? Yeah
13:03An extraordinary thing to do
13:05Tell me this you wrote I think a grumpy old women with I think Judith Holder was one of your
13:11big hit of a book
13:13Who's recently made you feel grumpy?
13:15I bet that autograph hunter did
13:16I've got over that it was probably 30 years ago
13:20I'd have to be a bit obsessive if I was still you know grumpy over that
13:24Oh everything on a daily basis that the grumpy thing was weird because the the biggest success of that was
13:30the stage shows
13:31which
13:33went around the world and we ended up having it translated into Icelandic and that was very interesting seeing how
13:40Grumpy old women across the world have got the same jokes in common the same yeah, there's one joke that
13:47was universal
13:48It's unfortunately too rude to go into and to be in Iceland to see all these women laugh at the
13:54same point is really quite gratifying so
13:56International humor yeah international ambassador of grumpiness brilliant stuff. Yeah, because Iceland they can be very grumpy because it's dark
14:05so often
14:06Most of the time but they do tend to deal with it quite well. They have a very good sense
14:10of humor
14:11There's this sort of disgusting snack and I think one of the things that makes the Icelandic's laugh the most
14:17is giving tourists this sort of fermented
14:20Sharks rotting corpse. I see right. I'm staying away. I'm staying away, but now it's time for a tea time
14:27teaser
14:28which is press one and the other clue press one if you want to reply press one if you want

21:30Excellent. Yeah, it's good. That's it steria and in the corner. I'm the exciting
21:35Little bit nicer than Listeria is wisteria. Yes, it smells a lot nicer. Yeah, that's there for eight
21:42Larius means more conceited or sorry most conceited or most cunning. Yes
21:46And sevens otherwise I think what else anything interesting realists laities
21:52Nothing too great. Very good. I froze
21:55Very good 68 plays 60 as we come now to an interesting and much
22:03Applauded part of today's proceedings, which is Susie's origins of words Susie. Well, thank you
22:08I'm going to talk about the origin of drop dead gorgeous
22:12Terms for knockout beauties. I've been with us for a very very long time and heartthrob goes back at least
22:17a century
22:18I sort of think about it about the kind of Hollywood film stars
22:21But actually it goes back a long a lot further than that something that thrills the senses
22:25You could talk about a heartthrob of a hat for example
22:28So not just a person but drop dead gorgeous has only been around since about 1985
22:34And there's a piece in the times of February of that year that is talking about Michelle Pfeiffer
22:40Trim smart and drop dead gorgeous
22:42Pfeiffer has been nibbling at stardom since her stints in Greece 2 and Scarface
22:46This is what they said and the phrase obviously struck a real chord and there are many references to it
22:51in newspapers
22:52Journals etc and very soon after that
22:55So that's drop dead gorgeous, but drop dead itself meaning excellent had been around since about the 1960s
23:01But of course before then drop dead it always meant something very different
23:05Demonstrating a real dislike of something or someone as in a drop dead and that originated in the 1930s
23:11But the reason I thought it was quite interesting to mention this is it just demonstrates how hard it is
23:16for non native speakers to learn English
23:18Not just in spelling but in its idioms as well because there are very very few of them that are
23:22that transparent
23:24There's so many idioms for example that involves dead
23:28You can talk about
23:30Dead wood
23:32A dead blow a dead heat for example, and they all mean something very different
23:36So if someone says to you and you're not a native speaker drop dead gorgeous all I can say is
23:40don't take it the wrong way
23:41Thank you
23:42Very good well done
23:45Great stuff Susie
23:49Very good indeed now then Connor eight points ahead 68 to John 60 and it's your numbers game Connor
23:55Can I stick with just one large you can thank you Connor freak precariously with just the one rounds difference
24:01there
24:02So we'll see if this changes anything for this numbers game. They are three
24:0610
24:08Another three six eight and 50
24:13And your target five hundred and twenty two
24:16Five two two
24:17Oh
24:49yes 522 522 John also 522 all right Connor 50 plus 3 50 plus 3 53 and
24:58multiply by 10 530 and subtract the 8 and it changes nothing now then John I
25:06did not do that I did 50 multiplied by 10 50 multiplied by 10 500 8 multiplied
25:12by 3 8 multiplied by 3 24 and 6 over 3 and 6 over the other three for the two
25:20and
25:20then I didn't take it yeah same gap well done well done very good
25:28so still that eight points but now it's time for a tea time teaser which is risks
25:34her and the clue she risks her company's good name by employing these she risks

27:36You might have encountered these.
27:37They're desert-dwelling rodents with very long hind legs
27:40that enable them to walk upright and perform long jumps.
27:43They're kangaroos.
27:45It's unlike it.
27:46North Africa to Central Asia.
27:48How big are they?
27:49They sound very big.
27:51Big as a four-foot penguin?
27:53Their hind legs are not.
27:55Perhaps they're related to those four-foot penguins.
27:57I'd rather, too.
27:58I think you're really pushing your luck there.
28:01Anyway, 85 plays, 77.
