01:00Many of them, of course, being Club Tropicana, mentioned to, refers to our holiday destinations, I suppose, Last Christmas and
01:08Careless Whisper.
01:09So, happy birthday, George Michael. Do you have a favourite George Michael song, Rachel?
01:14Oh, Club Tropicana's got to be up there. My dad's been known to massacre Wake Me Up Before You Go
01:19Go before. All through my childhood, it's my dad running around the house singing that. It's a good hairbrush song,
01:25isn't it?
01:25I suppose so. I'm sure you, you know, you're getting ready, you've got your hair up and you've got your
01:28hairbrush on in the shower.
01:29Excellent. All right, now then, the final quarter finalists, none other than Joe McGonagall, fourth highest scoring octa-champ of
01:37the series, finished, I think, with 7-1-6, Joe.
01:41Is that right? That's right, yeah.
01:42The last time you came, you existed on four nights' sleep because you left the casino, I don't know what
01:48time it was, and came straight here.
01:49Four hours, yeah, finished at six.
01:50And one.
01:51Finished at six, we're back here at 11, yeah.
01:53Well, I hope you had a decent night's sleep last night.
01:54I did.
01:54Good. Well done. You're joined by Sam McElhinney, originally from the great west of Ireland, Galway City.
02:03Yep.
02:04Lovely place. Big student town and a great town, yeah?
02:08Yep.
02:08But you're now in Leeds?
02:10Yes.
02:10Well, there we go. Something to look forward to when you get back to Galway.
02:13What do you make of the competition so far, Sam?
02:17Definitely been high quality.
02:19Hot?
02:19Yeah.
02:20We've had some great players, haven't we? Great players.
02:22And last time we spoke to you, you were in the t-shirt business, but I think you're doing something
02:27else.
02:27Tell us about it.
02:28Yes. Since then, I've moved now. I work with Barclays. I work in buy-to-let mortgage processing.
02:34Oh, do you?
02:35Yes.
02:35You're releasing more money to...
02:37Well, not myself personally, but...
02:39You're part of the machine.
02:40I'm part of the machine, indeed.
02:41Good. We'll be on the phone to you tomorrow morning.
02:44Now then, who's in the corner? As ever, of course, we've got Susie. We've got the great Mylene Clarence.
02:49Welcome back. It's been great fun having you here.
02:52And we've got another whole day with you, Mylene.
02:54Lucky me. Thank you for having me.
02:56Indeed. And I think you've got a great little anecdote to talk to us about later.
03:00But now, let's get on with the game.
03:02Joe, let us game.

04:17And I put the R on that for motivator.
04:21Oh, I think you're going to find it's OR versus an ER.
04:26Sam, it is, I'm afraid.
04:28That's really bad luck.
04:29It's such a good try.
04:31Bad luck.
04:32Great try.
04:33But in the corner, now then, Miss Glass.
04:36We've gone in the Italian direction for Amoretti.
04:39Yes.
04:40It's a representation of Cupid in a work of art.
04:43It's the plural of Amoretto.
04:44So representations of Cupid.
04:47Very good.
04:49Early lead for Jo there.

06:17Top line?
06:18Top line.
06:19OK.
06:21Get this up as quickly as I can for you so I don't prolong it.
06:25Oh, Sam, honestly, you're really going to hate me after this.
06:27Yes, it is in as an adjective, but it's hyphenated, meaning the highest quality or ranking, top line, but it
06:32has got that hyphen, pesky hyphen, sorry.
06:36Bad luck, Sam, bad luck indeed, brave try, but in the corner.
06:39Now then, Ms. Clouse.
06:40I've gone for something really elegant for seven.
06:44Toenel.
06:47No hyphens there.
06:48Anything else?
06:48No, there are no hyphens.
06:50Just pliant for six.

08:19Very good.
08:22Well done.
08:24Sam's off the blocks there.
08:2524 to 10.
08:26And then, as we turn to a tea time teaser, which is their act.
08:28And the clue, their act could easily be described as this.
08:32Their act could easily be described as this.
08:51And the answer is theatric.
08:59Such theatrics.
09:0024 to 10.

10:21Nice.
10:21Pretty good.
10:22Very nice.
10:23I haven't seen that one.
10:24Exorcist.
10:24Very good.

10:37Well, they're the plural of the cortex.
10:39And the cortex is an outer layer of tissue.

10:44Very good.
10:44Excellent.
10:45Well done.
10:4532 to 10.
10:47Poor old Sam's had a bit of bad luck.

11:55Now then, Joe? Eight. And Sam? Eight also.
11:58All right. Joe? Treading.
12:01Treading. Both treading? Same word.
12:03Treading the same road. And in the corner, Mylene?
12:07We've got another eight. We've got gradient.
12:09Gradient. Very good. That's it? That was it.
12:12Brilliant. Good enough. 40 plays. 18.
12:15As Sam, we go to your numbers game.
12:19OK, three from the top and three from anywhere else, please, Rachel.
12:22You can. Thank you, Sam. Three large ones and three small ones.
12:25We've not had this selection for a while.
12:26And for this round, the three small ones are eight, nine and two.
12:31And the three large ones, 25, 75 and 50.
12:35And the target to reach, 501.

13:17Now then, Sam.
13:18I did it.
13:198 plus 2 is 10.
13:218 plus 2 is 10.
13:22And multiply it by 50.
13:24And multiply it by 50, yeah, for one away.
13:26And Joe?
13:2850 times 9 is 450.
13:3050 times 9, 450.
13:32And 75 minus 25 is 50.
13:35Yep.
13:35Add it on.
13:35And you are, again, one away.
13:38One away, but we're after 501.
13:40Possible?
13:41Erm, I think it is.
13:44If you say, let's try 75 minus 9 is 66.
13:50Multip that by 8 for 528.
13:55And take away the 2 for 526.
13:59And take away the 25.
14:01And you get it.
14:01Yeah, very good.
14:03Very good indeed.
14:05Well done.
14:08So 47 plays at 25, but now it's our chance to chat to Mylene.
14:14And Mylene, I think that it was at the age of four that you started to play the piano
14:17and the violin.
14:18Is that right?
14:19Yes.
14:19And you've had sort of a long lasting love of the piano ever since.
14:23Yeah, I love the piano because I think it's such a versatile instrument.
14:26So all my first memories, well actually I don't even remember not having the piano in my life
14:31when you start that young.
14:34But it's good.
14:35It's easy to do.
14:35You can always play at different gigs, different concerts.
14:38I recently played actually at a work zoo and one of my partners that I work with came up and
14:43said,
14:44Look, I'm looking to buy a piano.
14:46Can you help me?
14:47So the person that they went to the piano that I played on was my immediate person to go.
14:52So I rang him up, but I didn't use my name because I thought maybe the price is going to
14:56double.
14:57Yeah.
14:57So I said, Look, I'm looking to buy a piano for a friend.
15:00I've just been playing on piano.
15:01I've just seen it recently at a certain venue.
15:04And he said, Oh yes, we gave that piano to Mylene Klaas,
15:07but between you and me, we had to tune it twice because she plays like a man.
15:12So I was like, No, she doesn't.
15:14Oh no, she definitely does.
15:16Is that the kind of piano that you're after?
15:17So it was very bizarre to actually hear how somebody else would describe you.
15:21Cut a long story short.
15:22I still kept up the facade that I wasn't Mylene Klaas, but I was Eileen Klaas.
15:29And we got him his piano.
15:30But apparently I play like a man.
15:32Well done.
15:33Brilliant stuff.
15:34Lovely story.
15:37Lovely story.
15:38Well done, Mylene.
15:39So 47 plays 25.
15:41We turn to you, Joe.

16:55Right.
17:00Now, what's the corner got?
17:01Mylene?

17:08Sing your answer.
17:09Go on, Susie.
17:10Sing my answer in a baritone.

18:33Five.
18:34You're five?

18:39Loutish is in the dictionary I'm pleased to say.
18:41Well done.
18:41Very good.
18:43What have we got in the corner?
18:45We had insults and lowish, just sixes.

18:50Yes.
18:51That means a bit lowish.

22:33Oh, well, there was just one seven that we could find, and that's leavens, as in bread.
22:39Oh, it's leavened bread, yeah.

24:01Yes, sir, same word

24:06The corner Miley. I got loudest as well, but also got doodles
24:11Very good anything else?
24:13Another nice one very good all right getting promising 78 63 and now it's that time of day
24:20Well, we turn to you Susie and your wonderful origins of words
24:25Well, if you were ever asked to guess the origin of the word camouflage
24:28You'd probably bet on it being French and you'd be right
24:32Camouflage in French across the channel into English during the first world war brought back by soldiers and it described
24:37Then just what it means now so the disguising of soldiers or artillery from the enemy
24:42So that's all very straightforward
24:43But and before that before it was brought back by those British soldiers can play meant something very different in
24:49France
24:50And the literal meaning of it is a puff of smoke
24:52And it became the name for a mine that contained a very small charge of powder
24:57But one that when it was placed in a wall of earth
25:00Exploded and then would emit these really dense fumes that would suffocate the enemy enemy not very nice nickname for
25:06it was the stifler
25:07And the effects of the mine were were notorious and
25:10Camouflage slipped into French slang
25:13For smoke blown into somebody's eyes
25:16Usually sort of in jest but also with the idea of blinding them to what was going on and it
25:20Then became thieves slang
25:22And in fact among spies as well for any kind of decoy
25:25And when the first world war erupted a camouflage seemed the natural choice really for a literal smoke screen
25:32So the smoke element was still there created by soldiers to conceal them from the enemy and that's how the
25:37word eventually came to me in the disguise
25:38We know it as today, but it's all about the puff of smoke
25:47So Joe in the lead 78 to Sam's 63 as we go into another letters game Sam
25:55Can I start with the vowel please Rachel? Thank you Sam

27:10Brains.
27:11Brains.
27:12Bases, it's a very tricky one, I have to say,
27:14because the dictionary says it's a maths noun,
27:17in other words you can't make it a plural,
27:20but it does say a course felt like wool and material
27:22that is typically green,
27:23which means that you can have more than one colour,
27:26and because on Countdown we make exceptions for anything
27:28which comes in different types, I'm going to allow it.
27:31So that's fine, Sam.
27:31Well done, Sam.
27:32Well done.
27:33Very good.
27:34Now then, what else have we got over there?
27:36Mylene.
27:37I think you're going to have to give it to the Queen here.
27:40And Her Majesty?
27:42We had Airbase for seven.
27:44Airbase.
27:45Yes.
27:45Thank you very much.
27:46So things have improved for Sam.
27:4784 to 69 as we go into the final letters game, Joe.
27:51That's for you.
27:52I'll have a consonant, please.

28:51Oh, yeah.
28:55I'll be right back to it.
28:55And a vowels.
28:57Yes, Joe?
28:58I'll try seven.
28:59Seven, Sam?
29:00I'm going to try a seven as well.
29:01Mm-hmm.
29:02Joe?
29:02Rehomes.
29:04Rehomes.
29:04You're both rehomed.
29:06Well done.
29:07You can rehome a pet.
29:09It's absolutely fine.
29:10Yeah.
29:10Yes.
29:11What else have we got over there?
29:12Just a six.
29:13Masha, who was a dandy in Victorian times.
29:16Very good.
29:17Well done.
29:17Ninety-one plays.
29:19Seventy-six as we come to the final numbers game.
29:22Sam?
29:23OK, Rachel, for this one, can I have three from the top and three from any rolls, please?
29:26You can.
29:27Thank you, Sam.
29:28Still all to play for.
29:29Three large ones and three little ones.
29:31Joe's not over the line yet.
29:33But for the last time, the numbers are six, two, four, and the large, three, 50, 75, and 100.
29:42And the target, 840.
29:44840.
30:15Yes, Sam?
30:17I have 844.
30:18844.
30:19844 away.
30:20Joe?
30:20844, not written down.
30:22Let's hear from you, Joe.

30:254 times 2 is 8.
30:27Times 100.
30:28Times 100, 800.
30:30And then plus 50 minus 6.
30:32And then plus 50, 850 minus 6, 844.
30:354 away.
30:36Yes, Sam?
30:37Same way.
30:38Same route.
30:39840, Rachel.
30:41Possible?
30:41I don't know.
30:42I've got to 1 away, but I haven't got this one.
30:44I'll have another look.
30:45Let's leave it with you then.
30:4698, too sure of 100 for Joe on, Sam on 83 as we go into the final road.
30:51Conundrum time, gentlemen.
30:53Fingers on buzzers and let's reveal today's countdown conundrum.
31:00Yes, Joe?
31:01Chiropody.
31:02Chiropody.
31:03My word, that was quick.
31:05Fleet of foot.
31:07Chiropody.
31:07Well done.
31:15Well done, Joe.
31:16108, bad luck, Sam, 83.
31:18You had a bit of a bad luck early on, didn't you?
31:21You took some risks and they didn't quite pan out.
31:26So you've got some things to take home with you.
31:28Priceless piece of kryptonite and also a lovely goodie bag and our very best wishes.
31:33Joe, we shall be seeing you in the future.
31:35Great.
31:36Well done again.
31:38Susie, tomorrow we shall look forward to seeing you.
31:40And Miley, look forward to seeing you, too.
31:43See you then.
31:43Brilliant stuff.
31:44How are you feeling over there, young Rachel?
31:46I'm feeling very excited about the finals.
31:48So you should be, but you should be feeling excited about other things, too, because it's not often we catch
31:54you flat-footed.
31:56But I think we've caught you flat-footed today.
31:58Ever since our Rachel took over from the legendary, rather larger than life, predecessor, Carol Vorderman, she's worked steadily and
32:06built a fabulous following on this show.
32:13And she's here to celebrate her thousandth game today.
32:18Did you know that?
32:19No.
32:19You did not.
32:20One thousand.
32:21We thought, now how can we celebrate this one thousandth appearing?
32:23We thought about things.
32:25We thought, well, she loves the Reds.
32:27Reds, one thousand.
32:28How does that chime?
32:30How does that chime with a player?
32:32Is there a player here that appeared a thousand times for Man United?
32:36Maybe there is.
32:38What's his name?
32:39Tell us his name.
32:40Rachel?
32:41Giggs.
32:42Ryan Giggs.
32:43Is he here?
32:44I wonder.
32:46Twinkle Toes?
32:48You're joking.
32:50Yay!
32:57Congratulations.
32:59Thank you so much.
33:00Here we go.
33:01Oh, my God.
33:03Congratulations, Rachel.
33:12Did you hear I ran down to the bus on...
33:15We've just been talking now, so, yeah.
33:18No, I'd just like to congratulate you on a thousand programmes.
33:21Thank you so much.
33:22We're both celebrating a thousand this year.
33:24Yeah, I'm not retiring.
33:25You're not retiring, I hope.
33:26No, not quite.
33:27You've got a few more years left than me, though.
33:29And this is a shirt signed off the team with your...
33:34the year that you were born.
33:36Oh, thank you so much.
33:38Thank you so much.
33:40Thank you so much.
33:41Thank you so much.
33:42Thank you so much.
33:44That is amazing.
33:47Congratulations.
33:50Oh, my God.
33:54So, that's it, then.
33:55One thousand shows and running.
33:57Well done, Rachel, and thank you very much, Ryan, for coming in.
34:00It's made her day.
34:01Come on.
34:02Not my day.
34:02Brilliant stuff.
34:03It's made my...
34:03Look forward to seeing you tomorrow.
34:04Same time, same place.
34:06You'll be sure of it.
34:07Good afternoon.
34:18With the lack of much physical evidence, it all came down to the DNA.
34:22Murder in the outback, the Falconeo and Lee's mystery, concludes tonight at nine.
34:27Next this afternoon, it's a place in the sun.
