00:30Good afternoon and welcome to Countdown.
00:32Did you know that October is International Walk to School Month?
00:37It's an initiative encouraging your school kids to walk to school rather than to be driven from the front door
00:42to the school gates every day.
00:44Better for the environment, they say.
00:45They also say it's better for your health.
00:48Hi, Rachel.
00:48Hello, Jeff.
00:49Did you used to walk to school?
00:51Sometimes.
00:52I used to cycle as well, a little bit.
00:54And when I was really lazy, I used to get my mum to drive me.
00:57Now, look, you know me.
00:58I don't like to get on my soapbox, but I have to tell you, with roads like racetracks out there
01:03and some unsavoury characters along the way,
01:05and my kids live ten miles away from their school, it's a barking mad idea that I've International Walk to
01:09School Month.
01:10So I'm going to designate October International Do Not Walk to School Month.
01:16What man protest?
01:17I never used to like getting there anyway.
01:18I was always in trouble at school, particularly in history.
01:21I think the history master had it in for some reason.
01:24Well, when he asked me where's a Hadrian's Wall, I said around Hadrian's Garden.
01:28Didn't go down too well.
01:29Didn't go down too well today, either.
01:33Let's meet our contestants, shall we?
01:35Both newcomers to Countdown.
01:37First of all, Chris Moore, who's from Stockport.
01:39He's a retired police officer and high flyer.
01:42He's held a private pilot's licence for 20 years, is a member of the Lancashire Aero Club, and regularly flies
01:49from the city of Manchester Airport.
01:51So, where do you fly to, Chris?
01:55Oh, I've flown to Ireland, France, Channel Islands.
01:58Right.
01:59Do you still find it exhilarating after all this time?
02:00I love it.
02:01No.
02:01I never get bored of it.
02:03Never get bored.
02:04Do you get bored of running marathons?
02:06No.
02:06No.
02:07How many have you done now, marathons and Great North Runs?
02:10Two London marathons and ten Great North Runs.
02:13Ten Great North Runs.
02:14Fantastic.
02:15What's your best time in the Great North Run?
02:17About one hour 53, I think.
02:18OK.
02:19Are you still getting quicker?
02:20No.
02:21No.
02:22Slowing down in Asia.
02:23Another feeling on you too well.
02:25Chris Moore is up against Wayne Chadwick, who joins us from Braithwaite in Keithley.
02:29He's a dad of three, ranging from 20-year-old Thomas William, who's 11, and little Macy, who's 10.
02:34And apparently Wayne's actually sung with Rick Parfitt.
02:38Stateless Quo fame.
02:39How did that come about?
02:40In Turkey.
02:41We were just in a bar, you know, karaoke bar in Turkey.
02:44I sung Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, and he did I Ho Silver Lining.
02:51Oh.
02:51Jeff Beck.
02:52Yeah, it was quite good.
02:53Very good.
02:54I was better than him, though.
02:56Oh, of course.
02:56Well, yeah.
02:56Well, that's it.
02:58Wayne Chadwick, then, up against Chris Moore.
03:01APPLAUSE
03:04And teaming up again with Susie Denton, Dictionary Corner, it's the woman we're more used to seeing running than walking,
03:09of course, the energetic treasure hunter, Annika Rice.
03:14APPLAUSE
03:18Gilly, your kids walk to school?
03:20Bus.
03:21Bus.
03:21Bus stop, right outside the house.
03:24Bus.
03:24Yeah.
03:24Two buses, actually, so it's quite a big journey, you know, and they did it from quite a young age.
03:28Um, if, but not ten miles away, that is, that's a trek.
03:33Yeah.
03:34Hmm.
03:34What about you, what about you, Susie?
03:36Usually bike.
03:37Usually bike.
03:37Or, if Lucy's on her scooter, I try and keep up with her on another scooter, but the results were
03:41a bit, er, a bit embarrassing.
03:43A cold scooter, like me.
03:44Susie Dent's scootering down the roads at Oxford.
03:47I know, yes, has to be seen to be believed.
03:49Quite a sight.
03:50We'll have to try and get our cameras there and just get that on tape for posterity's sake, I think.
03:54Okay, let's press on with the contest, shall we?
03:56As I say, two new contestants, so there has been a toss.
03:59Chris won the toss, and so he gets first pick of the letters.
04:02Afternoon, Rachel.
04:03Afternoon, Chris.
04:04Could I have a consonant, please?
04:06Start today with F.
04:09And another.
04:11D.
04:13And one more, please.
04:15M.
04:18Thowel.

04:34And a consonant, please.
04:37V.
04:40And one last vowel, please.
04:42And the last one.
04:43I.
04:44And for the first time today, here's the countdown clock.
04:47The second vowel, can's right.
04:51And a vowel.
05:19Wayne, how many?
05:20Six.
05:21And Chris?
05:22Five.
05:22Okay, what's the five, Chris?
05:23Video.
05:24And the six, Wayne?
05:26Phoned.
05:27Phoned, yeah, very good.
05:28Yes.
05:29Phoned for six.
05:31Panic or Susie, does it get any better than that?
05:33I got exactly the same, phoned.
05:35And that's it?
05:36One six, I'm afraid, yeah.
05:37One six, well spotted, Wayne.
05:38Off and running straight away with six points on the scoreboard for phoned.
05:42And Wayne, it's your pick this time.
05:44Hello, Rachel.
05:45Hi, Wayne.
05:45Could I have a consonant, please?

06:22.
06:55Chris, what's the six?
06:57Two parts.
06:58And the seven, Wayne?
06:59Predate.
07:00Predate.
07:01Fantastic.
07:02Yes, you have predate in the sense of existing before, earlier than something else, or in
07:06the sense of a predator, what a predator would do to its prey.
07:09Very good.
07:10It's an excellent seven, isn't it?
07:11Any other sevens?
07:13Tapered.
07:15Also very good.
07:17Otherwise, lots of sixes there.
07:19Predate and tapered, then.
07:21The two sevens available.
07:22Wayne, again, spotted one of them.
07:24It's moved on to 13.
07:25Let's see if Chris can get on the scoreboard now.
07:28Chris, it's your selection.

08:40OK, Chris, what's your six?
08:42Ratios.
08:43And yours, Wayne?
08:44Rotter's.
08:46OK.
08:47Are you spelling rotors?
08:48R-O-T-E-R-S.
08:50Oh, it doesn't have that final R, I'm afraid, so it'll just be a five.
08:54Bang that way.
08:55Ratios is signed for six.
08:58You'll be very pleased with yourself over there, you two.
09:00No, well, you've got a cracker, Susie, haven't you?
09:04Well, there is a nine there.
09:05It comes from the Latin sartor, meaning tailor, and it's sartorial.
09:10Ooh, sartorial, superb.
09:15Very good indeed.
09:16But Ratios is good enough to get Chris off and running.
09:19He's on the scoreboard.
09:19He has six.
09:21Wayne has 13.
09:22Wayne, it's you to choose.
09:24Consonant, please.
09:25Thank you, Wayne.
09:26G.
09:27A vowel.

09:54And a final W.
09:56And here's the countdown clock.
10:24And here's the countdown clock.
10:29Chris, what have you got?
10:31Just another six, Geoff.
10:32Another six.
10:32Wayne?
10:33Six.
10:33What's yours, Wayne?
10:34Wages.
10:35And yours, Chris?
10:36Graces.
10:38Okay.
10:38Graces and wages.
10:40Yes.
10:40Yeah.
10:41That's fine.
10:41A couple of W's make it tricky.
10:43I was really hopeless that round.
10:45I'm afraid you got nothing, really.
10:46Well, there is cargoes for seven.
10:49You can spell it O-E-S as well as O-S.
10:51So that will push you to the seven.
10:52But nothing beyond, I'm afraid.
10:53Okay.
10:54Chris moves on to 12.
10:56Wayne on to 19.
10:57And time for us to move on to our first numbers round of the day.
11:01And Chris, it's you to pick those numbers, please.
11:03I'll have one from the top, please, Rachel.
11:06And any other five, please.
11:07Any other five.
11:07Thank you, Chris.
11:08One large one and five little ones coming up.
11:11And for the first numbers game today, they are 5, 2, 5, 9, another 9, and 75.
11:21And the target, 344.
11:2330 seconds then to reach 344.
11:56Looking for 344 then.
11:58Wayne, how close?
11:59No, I'll not watch it.
12:01342, Geoff.
12:02342, Chris.
12:03Okay, let's have that 342, please.
12:05Okay, 9, 9 minus 5 is 4.
12:11Yep.
12:1575 plus the 9.
12:17Plus the other 9, 84.
12:20It's 84.
12:21Times that by 4 is?
12:24332.
12:256.
12:27And add 5 and add 2.
12:29And I've gone wrong, haven't I?
12:30Uh, the other 5 and the 2, what did you, 3, 4, 3, so did you declare 3, 4, 2?
12:38Yeah.
12:381 away, I'm afraid.
12:40Oh, not to worry.
12:40Bad luck.
12:43But you got it.
12:44Yeah.
12:45Well, I think I've got it.
12:46I didn't know what was wrong with you or what was going on there.
12:49This is my normal, inane pose, isn't it?
12:51Just finally lost it.
12:52Well, look, I might have got it, I'm not absolutely sure, but look, 75 minus 9 is 66.
12:5675 minus 9 is 66.
12:58Multiply it by 5.
13:003.
13:003.30.
13:00And then you've got the other 9 and the 5, you add them together and add them on.
13:03You do indeed.
13:04Well done, Dave.
13:10So Chris stays on 12, Wayne stays on 19 at the moment.
13:14Annika Rice is our guest in Dictionary Corner this week.
13:18Annika, what are you going to tell us about?
13:19Well, I thought, about 9 months ago, I made a documentary for ITV called Home is Where the Heart Is,
13:26where I had a young homeless girl who came to live with me for two weeks, and I thought
13:31people might want to know what's happened to her, because, you know, there's a lot of,
13:35you know, fuss when the crew are there, and then obviously they disappear, and the project
13:40obviously goes on as far as I'm concerned, because I'm her mentor now.
13:43And I just wanted to tell you how she was doing, which is amazing, because if you saw
13:48the documentary, she arrived very vulnerable, had been in and out of the welfare system all
13:54her life, was in a hostel on benefits, no self-confidence or feeling of self-worth or
14:01anything.
14:01And, anyway, she came to live in our mad family, and we all embraced her, and I've got
14:08such a noisy house with lodgers and suns everywhere.
14:12Everywhere there's a sun, you know, there's just so many of them.
14:15And she just kind of loved it, and I could just see she just was absolutely relishing being
14:21part of a team and having people around her who were interested in her, sort of almost
14:26all she needed.
14:27But it's been wonderful, and she's now got a proper job, I mean, a proper nine-to-five
14:31job.
14:31She's off all benefits, she's signed off completely, all off her own back.
14:36She took that big, big, brave step, because it's very easy to stay on benefits, as I'm sure
14:41people will understand.
14:42She's made that commitment to get rid of her debts.
14:46I helped her with a few, but she's largely paid off all her debts.
14:49She's working, she's in her own flat, she's an independent woman.
14:53And she just feels part of this adult life, which is what, you know, all I wanted her
14:58to feel, part of a team and loved.
15:00And so I just wanted everyone to take home that thought of being a team, and maybe thinking
15:05how they could maybe form a team themselves.
15:09And, you know, put out a hand to someone who might need help, might be an elderly person
15:13in your village who just need some help with shopping, or someone at the end of the phone.
15:17You don't have to do very much at all.
15:19It just makes such a big difference to feel that people are rooting for you.
15:22Thanks very much indeed, Annika.
15:29Chris on 12, Wayne on 19, time for our first teaser of the day.
15:34The words are C-frump, C-frump, and the clue, common sense, might lead you to this answer.
15:41Common sense might lead you to this answer.
15:59Perfumes is the word we were looking for.
16:04Two new contestants on Countdown today.
16:05Chris Moore on 12 at the moment, and Wayne Chadwick on 19.

17:14Chris what have you got? Seven. And Wayne? Seven. What's yours then Wayne? Enraged. And yours Chris? Candace. Excellent. Very
17:23good. Yes. We're feeling quite smug though. Yes. Actually. Up with apologies. Why are you feeling smug? Well just because
17:29that elusive nine is not always easy. I started with grease for a long time and then realised that there's
17:34un-greased. Yes. She's in the dictionary. She's just about limpsume.
17:39And one which is a little bit more familiar is dungarees for another nine. Chris it's your choice. Consonant please
17:52Rachel. Thank you Chris. N. And another. D. Another consonant please. L. Vowel. I. Another vowel.
18:09A. Another vowel. U. Consonant. T. Vowel. I. And one more consonant please. And lastly R. And your 30 seconds
18:27starts now.
18:59Wayne what did you make of that? Five. And Chris? Five. What's your five Chris? Drain. And yours Wayne? Tallied.
19:09Sounds good. It sounds good. Unfortunately it's not in though. I'm afraid there's tally. Numerous sort of similar sounding words
19:17but not that one I'm afraid. Bad luck.
19:19Okay. So just five to beat. I see the pen come out which is interesting. What have we got? Something
19:24spectacular?
19:26Nautili. N-A-U-T-I-L-I. It's from the world of science and the sea. It's a mollusk
19:32with a spiral shell and numerous short tentacles around the mouth.
19:36Nautili. Okay. Very good. Getting very close here. Chris on 24. Wayne on 26. Just two points to the gap
19:43at the moment. Wayne it's your pick.
19:45Consonant. Consonant please. Thank you Wayne. N. A vowel. O. Another vowel. E. Consonant. M. A vowel. O. Consonant. T.
20:05Another consonant. Z. A vowel.
20:11U. And a final consonant. And a final B. Time starts now.
20:51Looks tricky again doesn't it? Chris how many? Five Jeff. And Wayne? Five. What's yours Wayne?
20:57Tomb. With an E. And? And yours Chris? Mount. No tomb with an E. I'm afraid.
21:07I think that's the most difficult letters we've had. It's very hard. Yeah. I give up. It was very hard.
21:12I'm going home.
21:13We could have N tomb because you might kick yourself there. Wayne that was there for a six. That was
21:19our best bet.
21:20That mount is absolutely fine for Chris. That means he edges ahead. Chris it's your selection.
21:27Consonant please Rachel. Thank you Chris. V. And another. T. And another one please.
21:37D. D. D. Vowel. E. Another vowel. O. Another vowel. E. Consonant. L.
21:54Another consonant please. C. And one more vowel please. And to finish. A.
22:04C. And here's the countdown clock.
22:06C. And here's the countdown clock.
22:36C. And Wayne how many? Six. And Chris? Six. Okay what's yours Chris?
22:42Elated. And yours Wayne? Divorce. Elated and divorce. Yeah good sixes. Annika what have we got?
22:50I got cleated. Nautical term. Very nice. Coveted. Located a few sevens. Okay. So a couple of sevens around but
22:59good points for Chris and Wayne.
23:01Just a little breather for them right now. We're off to Dictionary Corner. It's Origins of Words time with Susie.
23:05Well I've talked before about words that exist for a particular concept even when you might have thought it unnecessary
23:11to have one and aglet was my favourite which was the tag at the end of a lace and also
23:16sesquicidalion if you remember which is somebody tending to use long words and that's a long word in itself.
23:21So I thought I'd give you a few more. Batology is the study of brambles not bats. Aristology is the
23:29art of dining. Sternutation I think I've mentioned before is the act of sneezing.
23:35A poor chess player is known as a patser which is quite interesting. In rally driving when you leave the
23:41ground when going over a ridge you are yumping.
23:44Finally what we do a lot of on this show is logomachy which is arguing about words. And finally for
23:51all students out there it sounds a little bit like lubrication but it's not.
23:54It's lucubration which is studying or composing late into the night.
24:04Chris 35 then. Wayne 32 at the moment. Time for another numbers round. This time Wayne it's you to pick
24:10those numbers please.
24:11Have the inverted T please. Inverted T. Thank you Wayne. One from the top and five small ones for this
24:17round.
24:18And this time they are eight. Another eight. Five. Two. Seven. And the big one 75. And the target 529.
24:3030 seconds to reach. 529.
24:32The game.
24:33The game.
24:36The game.
24:48The game.
25:00뮊 Shee deserts.

25:19Noddy song.
25:20529, well done.
25:21Yep, well done.
25:22Chris, same way?
25:23Slightly different.
25:247 times 75.
25:26Yep.
25:27And then 5 minus 8 over 8.
25:29For the other 4, yeah, great.
25:30Gives you the 1.
25:30Well done.
25:32Very good.
25:37Chris moves on to 45.
25:38Wayne moves on to 42.
25:40Good close contest.
25:42Here's another teaser for you.
25:43The words this time are icy stars.
25:45Icy stars and the clue.

25:50Dismiss Tony in the back room of the church.
26:08Dismiss Tony in the back room of the church.
26:10Sacristy is the word we were looking for.
26:13Sacristy.
26:14So, Tony Christie.
26:15That's the Tony in question.
26:16Is this the way to Amarillo, et cetera.
26:20Chris on 45 at the moment.
26:22Then Wayne is on 42.
26:24Do you do that one in karaoke?
26:26Nah.
26:27No.
26:27No.
26:27Bit soft food, that is it.
26:29Yeah.

26:30Not my sort of thing.
26:31Not your sort of thing.
26:32Okay.
26:33Let's press on, shall we, for the moment.
26:34Though it's a good close contest.
26:35Chris just got the lead at the moment.
26:37Chris, you've also got to pick up the letters.

27:49Dodgy seven.
27:50OK, let's have the six first of all, please, Wayne.
27:52Great.
27:53And the dodgy seven, Chris?
27:55Garotted.
27:56How are you spelling it?
27:57G-A-R-O-T-I-D.
28:00Garotted, as in to chop someone's head off, is double R, I think.
28:04But either way, it would be E-D at the end, not C-I-D.
28:07And great?
28:08Great.
28:09How are you spelling that?
28:10G-R-A-I-T-S.
28:12No, unfortunately not.
28:13I've seen gratis as well.
28:15Gratis would have been fine, yes.
28:17Anything else we could have had?
28:19Asteroid.
28:20Asteroid, yes, which is a mathematical term, not the asteroid, astronomical term.
28:23That's there for seven.
28:25But no more than that, I'm afraid.
28:26Look, that one.
28:27OK.
28:28Wayne, it's your selection.
28:29I'll start with a consonant, please.
28:31Thank you, Wayne.

28:50S.
28:51Another consonant.
28:54Q.
28:57And I'll have a final consonant, please.
29:00And a final F.
29:02And your 30 seconds starts now.

30:17Another vowel.
30:19E.
30:21Consonant.

30:38MUSIC CONTINUES
31:08Wayne, how many?
31:10Eight.
31:11And Chris?
31:12Six.
31:13Chris, what's your six?
31:14Tiptoe.
31:15Tiptoe.
31:15Very nice.
31:16And the eight, Wayne?
31:17Petition.
31:18How are you spelling it?
31:19I'm pretty sure it's all there.
31:20E.
31:21T.
31:21I.
31:21T.
31:22I.
31:22I.
31:22O.
31:22N.
31:23Excellent.
31:23Excellent.
31:28Petition, which I don't think anybody had spotted here.
31:31We had point, which in ballet is standing on the tips of your toes, but we were nowhere near that,
31:35so well done.
31:36Well done, Wayne.
31:36OK, very good.
31:38Chris on 45, then.
31:39Wayne stretches a bit further clear.
31:40He's on 56.
31:42On to our final numbers round of the contest.
31:45And, Wayne, it's you to pick those numbers.
31:46Charge the odds, Rachel.
31:48My choice.
31:48OK, that could be dangerous.
31:49One from the top or any other.
31:52My choice of one.
31:54Oh, I was going to go for four large.
31:56Just nipped in there.
31:57OK, thank you, Wayne.
31:59One large and five small ones for the last time today.
32:01And this time they are nine, six, seven, another nine, two, and 50.
32:09And the target, 735.
32:1230 seconds to reach 735.
32:44OK, 735, then.
32:46Chris, how close?
32:47736, Geoff.
32:48736, OK.
32:49Wayne?
32:50736.
32:51736 as well.
32:52OK, Chris, let's hear your version, please.
32:54OK.
32:55Nine and six is 15.
32:57Nine and six, 15.
33:0110 times it by the 50 is some 50.
33:052 times 7 is 14.
33:07And take it away.
33:084-1 away.
33:08Well done.
33:10Same method, Wayne?
33:11I didn't manage to write the last bit down.
33:14You haven't written it down, unfortunately, Wayne.
33:16We can't accept it.
33:17So...
33:18OK.
33:19So 735, Rachel?
33:20Yeah, if you'd have done the same way here, and then if you'd have said 2 add 7 is 9,
33:27and divide it by the other 9 for 1, take it away here, and 15 times 49 is 735.
33:35APPLAUSE
33:39So what that means is that Chris is on 52, and Wayne is on 56.
33:45And it's come to that time where I ask you to put your fingers on your buzzers, fellas, as we
33:49reveal today's crucial countdown conundrum.
33:54MUSIC PLAYS
33:55Oh!
33:57Chris?
33:57Prompting, Geoff.
33:59Let's take a look.
34:01It's not prompting, Chris, so Wayne, you get the rest of the time.
34:05MUSIC PLAYS
34:09Wayne?
34:10Imparting.
34:11Let's take a look.
34:15APPLAUSE
34:21Yeah, well done.
34:22It was importing, and it means that Chris has finished on 52, Wayne on 66.
34:29So, Chris, commiserations.
34:31Hope you enjoyed it, though.
34:32It was a close-run thing.
34:34Absolutely loved it, Geoff.
34:35Good.
34:35Well done.
34:36I missed it.
34:36And Wayne?
34:37Feeling a bit less queasy now?
34:39LAUGHTER
34:41You know what it means?
34:41You've got to do it all over again.
34:43Maybe a bit more relaxed.
34:45Well, next one.
34:46Very well played, indeed.
34:47And we'll see him again tomorrow.
34:48We'll see you again tomorrow, Annika.
34:49I just have to ask you a little more about the story of Bridget at Home is Where the Heart
34:53Is, because is it true that as a result of that programme, you and she had matching tattoos
34:59as a mark of your friendship?
35:00Yes, she wanted to have the entire Challenge Annika logo on her back, with the names of all
35:04the lodgers around it in the house, and we managed to persuade her not to do that,
35:09and I had a little heart on my ankle.
35:12Oh, wow.
35:12Yeah.
35:12Annika, we shall see you tomorrow, and likewise, Susie.
35:15Rachel, of course, I failed to mention earlier in the programme that it's also National Walk
35:19to the Hotel Month, better for the environment and the health you know.
35:23I'll give you a toot as we drive past, OK?
35:25See you tomorrow.
35:26Bye-bye.
35:38Switchover is coming.
