00:00Grab a couple of wooden furniture legs from the Home Depot.
00:03Use a dollar store wooden craft plaque as a base and adhere one of the wooden legs on top.
00:08Paint the entire piece using black paint.
00:11Reach for one of the hanging wire planters and remove the connected chain.
00:16Place the wire planter on top of the furniture leg.
00:19Glue a piece of cut styrofoam on top to secure the center of the basket.
00:23Insert stems of fall faux leaves into the foam.
00:26Then add a solar lantern on top of the foam.
00:30It's that easy.
00:32Add this to your porch for fall to add style during the day and help add light at night.
00:37I hope this inspires you to create your own fall porch planter.
00:41This weekend project starts with getting an old lamp out of the garbage.
00:44And then we're going to head down to Home Depot and we're going to grab us a basket.
00:47I've got two lamps I'm going to work with, but I've got to deconstruct this one with the light shade.
00:52The bulb, everything has to go, including the wire.
00:55We don't need that.
00:56So I'm going to cut that loose and get rid of all of the wire for it.
00:59Once I toss that away, it's time to get rid of the socket that holds the bulb.
01:03All of the hardware, again, must go.
01:06This one I'm going to deconstruct down to a smaller base.
01:09Also, what I'm going to do is make some epoxy, two-part epoxy,
01:12and start putting it on one of the parts here because it was being hold down by a bolt.
01:16Once I get that epoxy all the way around and set it back on the base,
01:20it's going to hold really firm in about an hour.
01:23I'm also going to go to that second lamp and I'm going to take that apart,
01:26cutting the wire and pulling all of it apart.
01:28We need that flat part right there.
01:30And then it's time to prime.
01:32When it comes time to priming, we want to make sure we do a little bit of paint at a
01:37time.
01:37And you only need one coat.
01:39This primer will run if you put too much on at a time.
01:42We're also going to do this to the smaller base.
01:44Again, smaller squirts on there and keeps it from getting any drips or runs.
01:49Once we let that dry, then we can go ahead and start painting.
01:52On the smaller base, I'm going to use a hammered look.
01:55This is great because you can put it on.
01:57I only need one coat because it's a good quality paint from Rust-Oleum
02:00and it's going to cover really nice.
02:03I'm going to make sure I get all the little grooves and nicks.
02:05That's why it's good to have a spray can.
02:07You can get all of that sprayed on there.
02:09And then on the taller lamp, I'm going to go ahead with this base
02:13and put some black paint on it.
02:15It is gloss, so it's going to be a little shinier, which is what the look I'm going for.
02:19Once I get all of that covered and maybe even a second coat,
02:22I'm going to go back to the epoxy, get it mixed up,
02:25and I'm going to set it on top of that flat base right there.
02:28Once I get it all covered, I'm going to set my planter right on top
02:32because it's got a flat part to it.
02:34Now on the smaller one, I put some epoxy around it
02:36and I added a washer because it didn't have big enough of a base.
02:40Once the washer is settled on there, I'm going to put some more epoxy on top of that
02:44and again put the planter.
02:46Once that sets up in about half an hour,
02:48it's time to add some potting soil to both of these.
02:51Once I get all of that potting soil in, it comes to the flower of choice,
02:55but this time I chose some vines because I wanted to grow
02:58and start growing over and hanging on my project here.
03:01Once I get all that planted and get it in place,
03:04look how good it turned out.
03:05It absolutely looks amazing.
03:07I like the two different colors, one taller and one shorter,
03:10and it looks great.
03:11And as these vines grow, they're going to look great.
03:13You'll want to head to the Home Depot for a large tomato cage
03:17and the Dollar Tree for three wire planter baskets
03:19when you see how cool this summer hack turned out.
03:22Now I'm preparing all three wire baskets to fit inside the tomato cage
03:26at the bottom and the two upper rings.
03:29The very top wires of the tomato cage can be cut off.
03:32However, I'm going for something a little more decorative.
03:34I'm pinching wire cutters around the base of the top wire,
03:38then gently bending the wire towards the floor.
03:41Now I'm moving the bent wire to the left,
03:44slipping it into the next section of the cage,
03:46then tucking the end in so it stays in place.
03:49To get a full-grown look right away,
03:51I am using three hanging flower baskets
03:53and removing their basket hooks.
03:55The basket of flowers is being placed into a wire basket
03:58with the clips attached.
04:00Then I'm positioning them both on top of a tall, slim stool.
04:03I'm using a plant pot to raise the level of the flower basket
04:07so it reaches the third ring,
04:08then clipping the wire basket to the cage.
04:11Next, I'm picking up the tomato cage
04:13and gently placing it over top of the bottom flower basket
04:16with a gentle rotation so the flowers don't break.
04:20I'm placing a wire basket into the top of the tomato cage,
04:23then using zip ties to attach them together.
04:26Now I'm placing flowers in the very top basket to complete the look,
04:30which results in a gorgeous, full-grown looking three-tiered flower stand,
04:35offering loads of height and a fabulous punch of color.
04:38I just love how the black tomato cage
04:40and the flower baskets offset the vivid red and green,
04:43making quite an eye-catching display.
04:45While this flower stand looks right at home beside my garden shed,
04:48I love that you have the ability to display it anywhere you wish.
04:52You'll never believe what you can make from an old lamp
04:54and a glass shade from the thrift store.
04:56First, I'm going to remove the shade.
04:58Next, I'm going to remove the cord since I won't need it
05:01and all of the electrical parts.
05:03Once that's all gone, I'm left with the lovely base of the lamp,
05:07which is ornate and quite tall.
05:09It's time to paint the lamp now
05:10and I've chosen a gorgeous mossy green color
05:13that I think is going to look wonderful when it's done.
05:16I want to make sure to paint all of the details
05:18and even under the edges
05:20so none of that existing gold is showing.
05:23The final thing I want to do to the lamp base
05:25is cover it with a coat of water-based clear coat.
05:29This is going to help protect the paint
05:30when it's outside when I'm done.
05:32This is the glass lampshade that I found at the thrift store
05:35and I've gone ahead and given it a good scrub
05:38with some soap and water.
05:39I want to attach it to the lamp base
05:41so I'm going to use some contact cement to do that.
05:44Now I can adhere them together
05:46and line them up exactly where I want them.
05:48With the lamp top adhered to the glass shade,
05:51it's time to pop it onto the rest of the lamp base.
05:54I want to fill the glass shade now completely with soil.
05:58My new planter is ready for some plants.
06:01I have these succulents that really need replanting
06:04and this is going to be perfect for them.
06:06I'm just going to separate the plants and pop them into the soil.
06:09I absolutely love how this planter turned out
06:12and that I was able to make it from an old mismatched lamp
06:16and shade that no one wanted.
06:18Have you ever wondered what you can do with an old worn out lamp?
06:22Well, head to your local dollar store
06:24and grab some type of solar light.
06:28Then when you get back, it's time to start working.
06:31Grab your lamp and go ahead and remove the shade
06:34and the harp that goes with it.
06:36Then we're going to remove the parts of the lamp
06:38that we don't need anymore.
06:40And you're going to unscrew the nut that's there.
06:43And this is going to loosen up your whole lamp.
06:45But what we want to do is to remove that metal socket
06:48where the light bulb sits.
06:50So pull it out and use some good wire cutters
06:53to snip the wires that are connected to it.
06:56You'll be able to pull the socket out of the top
06:58and then you're going to want to pull the cord
07:00out of the bottom of your lamp.
07:02We want to get rid of the plug and the cord.
07:06Once you've done that, go ahead and just tighten it back up again
07:09so your lamp is back in its original order
07:12and you'll be ready to go.
07:14So my two lamps were different colors
07:16and I wanted them both to be black.
07:18So if you want your lamp's uniform,
07:21then lay out a piece of cardboard, some paper bags.
07:25And I did a nice two coats of a matte black.
07:30Once that's dry, you can set your lamps up on a table
07:34and grab some good quality glue
07:36and run a bead of glue around the top.
07:39You're going to set your solar lights on top,
07:44pressing them firmly down
07:45and then give them a few hours to dry.
07:48And then when night comes,
07:50you'll be ready to place your lights in the garden.
07:54I put one on our little patio table.
07:56These lights shone so brightly.
07:59I was super impressed by how bright they were
08:02considering that I paid $1.25 for each of them.
08:05I wanted to create something that would look unique
08:08and beautiful in my garden during the day,
08:10but also look really cool at night.
08:12So I ran down to Home Depot
08:13and picked up some beautiful flowers
08:15as well as two of these different hanging baskets.
08:18I removed the chain from both of the baskets
08:20and ended up removing the insert from one of the baskets.
08:25This way I could set one basket on top of the other
08:28and create a cool looking orb.
08:30Once I knew I had that all planned out,
08:32I opened everything up,
08:34placed my flowers inside,
08:36closed it again with the top frame on the top,
08:39lined up the holes,
08:40and added zip ties to hold everything together securely.
08:44My next step was to add the lights.
08:46These are solar-powered lights,
08:48so they'll work great when I use them outside.
08:51I used some command strip tape
08:53just to secure the solar-powered portion of the lighting
08:57to the top of the orb.
08:59Now I was ready to just go ahead
09:00and wrap my lights all the way around the project.
09:03Once it was all wrapped and ready,
09:05I was able to just let it sit in the sun for a few hours
09:08so that it could charge up,
09:09and then just turn them on
09:11and enjoy how wonderful they look.
