00:17Australia's dismissal on the first day for only 152 gave England's players their best
00:22opportunity to win a test match in this series. They resume today at 15 for one,
00:26needing to survive the new ball period and batting on a pitch that had dried out very well and seemed
00:31certain to favour them as the day went on. Max Walker is the bowler, he's resuming his interrupted
00:37over and the batsman now is Colin Cowdery. And the catch dropped, Mallet touched that one at the
00:47gully position, a very difficult catch, one that Mallet however often does catch. So a let off for
00:54Cowdery and his score is advanced by two to seven.
01:07And he's out.
01:11A ball lifting outside the off stump, you saw it, it was a very fine delivery. Landing on the seam
01:18and lifting and
01:19Cowdery playing defensively, finding the outside edge of the bat and he's caught behind. Cowdery out,
01:25caught by Marsh from the bowling of Walker for seven and England at two for 18. Here it is again.
01:31And quite a lot of lift. And the top edge of the bat, it may even have been the glove.
01:38It was either top edge or the glove.
01:48There's a good stroke.
01:55They'll get their four anyway. And England two for 30. Lilly's over cost him six runs and his figures now
02:01are one for 17 as you see.
02:06There's Lilly just flexing his right leg. Looking as though he's not putting too much weight on it.
02:18Might be carrying an injury in that right leg, possibly the right thigh. Certainly not happy about it.
02:26Walker now to Ness again and the same sort of stroke as the previous one we saw. He'll get two.
02:35As Mallet's return and a good one comes back to Marsh.
02:43Lilly now who's adjusting his boot.
02:47I'm not at all sure that this isn't to do with a possible injury.
02:59There it is again. Another lovely cut or drive. Square of the wicket.
03:04Redpath may stop this one before it reaches the fence.
03:07The batsmen have run two and Ness three and Ness is coming back for the fourth. Well run.
03:16Very well run by Edrich and Ness.
03:19Ness moves on to 18 and England two for 40.
03:33Well a perfect stroke that I thought a little bit dangerous when they first played it,
03:38but it certainly found the middle of the bat and it's four runs.
03:48Beautiful delivery.
03:53Good cover drive from Edrich. It's going out towards that long boundary.
03:57They'll probably get three here. That's Redpath the field.
04:03And between the two fieldsmen there, between the second slip and the finer of the two gullies,
04:09not a good shot from Ness and into the boundary for four it goes.
04:18And he's caught, is it? No, down to the boundary. It was a dive for the ball. It would sail
04:22just past his hand.
04:27And that's almost back on the stumps. Just missing the off stumps. Now if Edrich moves,
04:32let's see where the ball is. You see that? It was just about finishing up behind the off stump.
04:47And that's dropped, is it? The easiest of chances to McCosker.
04:59This time finding the gap. It's a well played shot. It's perfectly timed. It's racing out towards that long boundary.
05:05It won't be four. They've taken two. And they're coming back for a third.
05:13Well, that was a full toss and well taken care of by the Ness. It's racing out towards that long
05:17boundary.
05:18No hope for Edwards. And that's the 100 up for England.
05:24But Mallet's here to bowl to Edrich.
05:27Now that's a full toss again and through the field of Gayers.
05:31Walter's a long chase. I don't think he'll make it. It's slowing down in the outfield, but the ball should
05:35just win.
05:36And that's two balls, two fours to England. Total 105.
05:44And chopped nicely by the Ness. Place it well. Going down towards the long boundary.
05:48I think Jenner will get this one. They've taken two and they'll turn for three. And there's the 50 to
05:53Mike D'Innes.
05:57Second 50 and consecutive matches. And for him, a splendid return to form after such a dismal series.
06:05D'Innes 51, Edrich 48, two for 111.
06:15Great shot by D'Innes. He gave himself a bit of room that time. That was a sort of a
06:19Doug Walters shot.
06:20He moved away from the stumps and hit it very firmly through the cover area. Perfect shot.
06:31There's the half century to Edrich. Coming back for the second.
06:37Edrich 51, England 2 for 123.
06:50And there's that stroke that he's played so well during this innings.
06:53The square drive. A long chase for Redpath.
06:56I think there'll be four runs. Now, Edrich is only running fairly slowly, but there's four if they want it.
07:01Walker now bowling to Edrich. My goodness, I don't think I've seen Edrich hit the ball harder than that.
07:15And Mallet bowls to D'Innes.
07:18And a good stroke. Straight down the ground.
07:20It's a long chase for Walters, giving up a very good off drive.
07:29And this one's through.
07:35Walters will stop it.
07:37Meanwhile, D'Innes goes through for his third.
07:42D'Innes, 78.
07:45And England 2 for 154. They take the lead.
07:55Oh, catch and he's out.
08:00Well caught by Ian Chappell at first slip.
08:04Edrich out. Caught Chappell. Bowled. Here it is again.
08:07The bowling of Walker.
08:09Top edge.
08:12And Chappell taking a very good catch, diving to his right.
08:16And I thought a particularly good piece of work on the part of Marsh there,
08:20because Marsh could quite easily have gone across and
08:23spoilt that for first slip Ian Chappell.
08:33A good looking shot that time. It's going right out to the long boundary.
08:36I think it could be four.
08:38And slowly it rolls into the fence for four.
08:41And D'Innes goes on to 94.
08:51And beautifully fielded again. A shot at the stumps.
08:53That would have been out.
08:54And overthrows. Missed the stumps.
08:57D'Innes was certainly out of his ground.
08:59And they'll take two.
09:00That throw by Redpath would have not have missed the stumps by any more than
09:0410 centimeters. It wasn't too far away.
09:07And D'Innes was a long way out.
09:14And that's coming down to the boundary left.
09:15But we'll see about this.
09:17It's going right down to the sight board.
09:18We'll have to wait for the umpire's call here.
09:21It's a four. That's his hundred.
09:24That was off the bat.
09:25So that must have nearly been a chance.
09:27But D'Innes has scored his century.
09:28He has 101.
09:31Well, D'Innes's finest moment of this whole tour.
09:34Captain of England after such a dismal series in the last test,
09:38the sixth test here in Melbourne, scoring a century.
09:41Well done, Mike D'Innes.
09:46Was in the air safely past McCosker, who was feeling behind square leg.
09:51Does it now matter whether he can save the four?
09:53He does so.
09:59And Fletcher gets three from that uppish sweep off the top edge.
10:04He moves on to 19 and England three for 208 at the end of Mallet's 12th over, seven runs from
10:10it.
10:10And we should add that Lilly is off the field, suffering from a bruised foot.
10:15The new ball has just been taken.
10:16You can see the umpire holding up the old ball.
10:21Walker will now bow with a new ball and watch how the field changes.
10:24Become far more aggressive in its dimensions.
10:28Two slips a gully.
10:30Back with short leg.
10:36That won't be stopped.
10:38Four runs in the leg glance.
10:46That's a good stroke off his toes.
10:48The in-swinger finding the gap at mid-wicket.
10:50And D'Innes coming back for the second run.
10:52He'll have to hurry.
10:53A good return too from Dimmick.
10:55But D'Innes is through.
11:00Lovely stroke behind square leg.
11:02McCosker is the fieldsman who will
11:05pick the ball up.
11:07Three-quarters of the way to the fence.
11:08And D'Innes gets three.
11:14D'Innes 112.
11:16And England three now for 230, which is a lead of 78.
11:26There's a good stroke through the gap in the covers.
11:28A long chase for Edwards.
11:33Here's a great fieldsman.
11:34We'll watch his return.
11:35He's been magnificent with the return all day.
11:37He's going still.
11:38Oh, now have a look at that one.
11:40Magnificent return.
11:41It wasn't over the top of the bails, no.
11:43But when one thinks that Edwards had to throw the ball right down to the far end of the pitch,
11:49it was a great return.
11:50But we must also say a very fine stroke.
11:52Fletcher moves on to 39 with those three runs.
11:56And England three for 236.
12:03And a chance dropped.
12:05Dropped by Ian Chappell.
12:07Went both hands to Ian Chappell on his left-hand side.
12:12And look to D'Innes.
12:17And through the second slip area, there's no one there.
12:20It was in the air.
12:21Straight down to the fence for four.
12:22That was well wide of Ian Chappell.
12:28In the air.
12:29Could be a chance.
12:30No.
12:31Marsh couldn't make it.
12:32That's we'll probably won't be sure by the movement of the players.
12:36Everybody seems to react to it the way Marsh moved up.
12:40What do you think, Paul Scheer?
12:42Yes, that was definitely off the glove.
12:43But it lobbed very close to the wickets and there was no fieldsman within 20 meters.
12:49You can see the ball short there.
12:51Strikes.
12:52Mark D'Innes on the gloves.
12:54Flies in a gentle arc.
12:56But it's very close to the wickets and doesn't give Rod Marsh any chance to get underneath it to complete
13:01the catch.
13:02England began the third day in an ideal position.
13:04121 runs ahead.
13:06Seven wickets still in hand.
13:07And D'Innes and Fletcher well in control.
13:09Australia had to contain them today.
13:11And in fact, without Lilly in the first hour, they did a very good job.
13:14Just 22 runs coming from 11 overs.
13:16Here now is Geoff Dimmock bowling to England captain Mike D'Innes.
13:25And through the covers.
13:27Great shot from D'Innes.
13:28Four all the way.
13:29That's his 150.
13:35D'Innes 153.
13:38Fletcher 62.
13:40England 3 for 299.
13:43And D'Innes has been there now for 401 minutes.
13:48He's hit 12 fours.
13:55And down through the third man area.
13:57That's the shot they were trying to tempt D'Innes on.
13:59But that wasn't a catch by any means.
14:01It was beautifully played.
14:04That's the 300 up for England for the first time in this series.
14:12That's through the field.
14:13Best shot we've seen from Fletcher this morning.
14:15That's racing across the outfield and into the fence for four.
14:23And through the field.
14:24That was in the air.
14:24That was the one they were looking for.
14:26It went straight between Wake Chapel and Mallet.
14:29It was the ball that they were trying to tempt D'Innes on.
14:32He played the shot.
14:33But just wide of the two fieldsmen.
14:39And that hit him on the back.
14:40And that was an appeal there.
14:42Appeal for court.
14:49And a beautiful shot from D'Innes.
14:52Clean through the covers.
14:57Demick to Fletcher.
15:01Edged.
15:02Down to third man.
15:03Will Chapel cut it off?
15:04He's coming around quickly.
15:06To feel Demetrius so inside the fence.
15:08And the batsmen are through for two.
15:10Walter's bowling.
15:16Beautifully off the back foots from D'Innes.
15:18Through the covers.
15:19This will be four runs.
15:20A shot we've played.
15:21We've seen played so often by D'Innes.
15:27Good shot.
15:28Forced away through.
15:29Wide mid on.
15:30It's going out towards the fence.
15:32Chapel is after.
15:33They've run two.
15:33They'll take three.
15:42Swings.
15:43There's runs here.
15:43Back with a square leg.
15:44It's racing out to the boundary.
15:45Four runs.
15:47Sweetly timed shot by Fletcher.
15:49Takes him into the eighties.
15:51Eighty-two.
15:53Three for three hundred and forty-five.
15:56Now in Chapel to Fletcher.
15:59And down the fine leg area.
16:01It's racing away to the boundary.
16:02There's no field man within 50 meters of that ball.
16:04And that's four.
16:05An easy four to Fletcher.
16:12And caught and bowled.
16:14Great effort.
16:15Magnificent catch by Walker.
16:17Once again.
16:18D'Innes walking away and playing straight back.
16:20And D'Innes are fine innings.
16:22Caught and bowled by Walker for one hundred and eighty-eight.
16:24Four for three hundred and fifty-nine.
16:27Well, what a great catch there by Max Walker.
16:30D'Innes was obviously looking for these shots.
16:33On the offside.
16:35Strolling away to the leg side.
16:36And pounding the ball off the back foot through the offside field.
16:39On that occasion, he stepped right away.
16:42And failing to get enough left arm into the shot.
16:46Hit it with the bottom hand.
16:47And Walker diving to his right.
16:49Brought off a miraculous catch.
16:51D'Innes.
16:53Out.
16:54Caught and bowled.
16:55Walker.
16:55One hundred and eighty-eight.
16:57Falling twelve short of Hammond's all-time record for an Englishman.
17:01On the Melbourne Cricket Ground of two hundred.
17:04Scored in nineteen-twenty-eight-twenty-nine.
17:06Now Greg to face Ian Chappell.
17:09Oh, full toss.
17:10It was almost a beaner.
17:11It was about waist high to Greg, which is fairly high up.
17:14And down through the slippy area.
17:15Going right down to that long boundary.
17:17It won't be four.
17:18They'll run three.
17:21And so Greg, in surprise, finds he's got three against his man.
17:26Now Ian Chappell.
17:28And Fletcher's cracked that through the covers.
17:30That could be his hundred.
17:45Fletcher's first century against Australia.
17:49One hundred and one.
17:51Greg is eight.
17:52Four for three hundred and eighty-one.
18:01And then right on the bottom of the bat.
18:02And that.
18:04Rearingly spun back.
18:05Certainly nowhere near the stumps, but.
18:08One that Greg made contact, I think, with his bat and his foot at the same time.
18:12It's just all of a tangle there.
18:20Down to fine leg and a chase for Walker.
18:22This may even reach the boundary.
18:24It's racing across that outfield.
18:25The ball slowing down.
18:26Two converging on it.
18:27And the ball just winning.
18:40Back past the bowler.
18:41That's a fine shot from Greg.
18:42He really hit that.
18:43Right down the long end of the ground.
18:45Straight down the ground.
18:46Four runs.
18:52And again out to the boundary through mid-wicket.
18:55This one mightn't reach.
18:55McCosker's after it.
18:56They've taken their second run.
18:58They're going for three.
18:59They'll get three.
19:08And not a chance.
19:09Just wide of Ian Chappell.
19:11He fell away to his right-hand side.
19:13But I'm fairly certain the ball hit the ground before it reached the fieldsman.
19:16So Greg is 24.
19:18Fletcher 103.
19:19Four for 399.
19:24This time they've taken the single.
19:26Red paths deep there for Greg now to go up to 25.
19:29And that's the 400 up for England.
19:30Four for 400.
19:32Greg 25.
19:33Fletcher 103.
19:41Ian Chappell to Greg.
19:43And that's a big hit over the top of the mid-off.
19:45Going right down the boundary and into the fence on about the third bounce.
19:58That one spun and spun past the bat.
20:00That was a good ball from Chappell.
20:05A lovely shot by Fletcher.
20:07Hit away through mid-wicket.
20:08It's racing out towards the fence.
20:10Red path is after it.
20:11They've run two.
20:12But for no avail has been the chase.
20:15There's been a change from the northern end.
20:17Ian Chappell has been replaced by Walters.
20:19He bowls to Greg.
20:21Edges it obviously but safely for four.
20:26Only the lone slip fieldsman and a wide backward point.
20:30And Greg steed that ball away through the vacant position for four runs.
20:41Greg lofts this one.
20:43It'll be four.
20:43It's coming out towards the sideboard.
20:46Right over the bowl is here.
20:47The well hit shot by Greg.
20:52The ball called and runs to Greg possibly only one after deep and wide long arms.
21:01So that is the half century for Greg.
21:05It's 50 and it's four for 442.
21:10And you can see the crowd became a very bright and entertaining knock from Tony Greg.
21:1650 in 65 minutes.
21:18And it's certainly a very bright scoring.
21:21It's a loss and it's missed a valiant attempt by Ian Chappell.
21:28A great attempt to take that left handed chance.
21:32Missed time shot to mid wicket.
21:39To cuts runs here.
21:41Speeding out towards the fence.
21:43Chappell is after.
21:44They've run one.
21:44They'll take two.
21:45It may beat Chappell into the fence.
21:47And it has.
21:53Big swings.
21:54It goes down back with a square leg.
21:56And it's four runs.
21:59First bounce.
22:00First bounce into the fence.
22:05Big swings as one is away through mid wicket.
22:08It bounces once, twice, three times into the fence.
22:11And another boundary to Greg.
22:14And certainly what the crowd loves.
22:15He's now 59 and it's 4456.
22:24I don't know whether we're going to be able to give you the statistics or not.
22:29But it would seem that for the third, fourth and fifth wicket, there's going to be a century partnership.
22:35Only three runs needed for the century partnership.
22:39Greg Hooks.
22:40Way back with a square leg.
22:41It's another four.
22:42This time it bounces once.
22:43And over the fence.
22:45Well, what a great display of batting by Greg.
22:49He's really taking towards us.
22:50And there is the 100 partnership.
22:52That's three in a row.
22:54For the third, fourth and fifth wicket, we've seen England score century partnerships.
23:00After being eclipsed for the first five test matches, my goodness, aren't they taking charge?
23:04The 100 runs has come up in the very good time of 71 minutes.
23:09And Greg has 63 of those runs.
23:12Walters Bowley.
23:16It swings again up easily this time.
23:19It's going out back with a square leg.
23:21It will drop short of Jenner.
23:23And he'll cut off the boundary.
23:25And whilst he's doing this, the batsman will run three.
23:30And a great return from Jenner.
23:3671 to McBowling.
23:39It's loftily.
23:40Well, it'll go past Walters.
23:42It's racing out towards the fence.
23:44It'll be four.
23:47Fletcher now.
23:48130.
23:51Drives handsomely through the cover.
23:53It's a glorious shot.
23:55All speeding to the fence.
23:56And what a lovely shot, Colin.
23:58We don't see any better than that.
24:07The McBowling.
24:12Fletcher hooks.
24:14Two mid-wicket it goes.
24:15Speeding out towards the fence.
24:16A deep mid-wicket.
24:17No ball called.
24:19It will beat the Edwards into the boundary.
24:22So it's four more to Fletcher.
24:32And in the air, he could be caught.
24:34He's underneath it.
24:34Walters is it.
24:35Getting down underneath it.
24:36And it's a catch.
24:37Yes, well caught by Jenner.
24:43Well, Matt Corker has broken through.
24:45Greg caught Jenner.
24:48Bold Walker for 89.
24:50Five for 507.
24:52Walker, four for 128.
25:02And hit hard and could be caught.
25:04Yes, great catch.
25:06A Ferguson catch by Redpath.
25:09Fine diving catch.
25:11And Fletcher is out for 146.
25:13Fourth Redpath.
25:14Bold Walker.
25:15Walker has five for 128.
25:17The new schedule batsman is old.
25:19And two Sutton wickets have fallen.
25:25And it's a bolding.
25:26It's a green ball.
25:28Old, bold by Dimmick.
25:30No score.
25:31Not, not out one.
25:32Seven extras.
25:34Seven, four, 508.
25:36Dimmick's first record in a test match.
25:37One for 124.
25:39When I say in a test match,
25:40a test match against England.
25:48And not four for court behind.
25:50He's out.
25:51Not to have been caught.
25:52Marsh, bold Walker, four, five.
25:55Underwood, not out two.
25:56Eight for 514.
25:58Walker, six for 132.
26:06And this time he's out.
26:08No doubt about that one.
26:10Arnold caught Marsh, bold Walker.
26:13No score.
26:15Nine for 514.
26:16Walker, seven for 132.
26:18And absolutely no doubt about that one.
26:27And through the covers it goes along Chase Redwoods.
26:30I think that could be four.
26:32It's racing across this outfield and into the fence it goes at the cover point boundary.
26:42It's all over Walker.
26:45Walker, eight for 143.
26:46And England, all out for 529.
26:50Australia began at 36 for no wicket against England today, needing a total of 377 to make them bat again.
26:57McCoskey and Redpath batted briskly at the start against Lever and Arnold.
27:00But England had their first setback of the day after Lever had bowled only three overs.
27:05He had to leave the field with what was later diagnosed as influenza.
27:08I don't think I've ever known a team to come to Australia with more illnesses and injuries in this MCC
27:13side.
27:14The Australian Opus McCoskey was the more lively.
27:17On a pitch that, although it was very slow in pace, had enough variable bounce to give the bowlers some
27:23hope of success.
27:24Here is Jeff Arnold now, bowling to Rick McCoskey.
27:31No ball.
27:34Good stroke off the back foot.
27:37It'll be two and that brings up McCoskey's 50 and a very fine 50 it was too.
27:43Australia none for 70 and McCoskey's got 50 of them.
27:46And a very well deserved round of applause.
27:54And beautifully played by Redpath.
27:56That looks to be four all the way.
27:58Placed it perfectly between the slip and the gully.
28:01That was not a deliberate strike that one.
28:09Well, it's going to be four from the shot.
28:11It's going right down to the boundary.
28:13The nest is racing after it.
28:14I don't think he'll make the ball slowing down.
28:16But it's just into the fence now for four and the total to 91.
28:26He's out is he?
28:27Yes, he's gone.
28:29Well, the bowling chains has yielded the wicket.
28:32Cowdery has caught McCoskey.
28:33McCoskey caught Cowdery.
28:35Old Arnold for 76.
28:37Redpath not out 28.
28:39Australia one for 111.
28:42Now Greg to Redpath.
28:45And Redpath hit that one hard on one leg side.
28:49There's no one out there that's going to be in the defense for four.
28:59They have a pitch ball and well driven by Redpath.
29:02It mightn't be four.
29:03It's a long chase for Luckhurst.
29:05They'll take two and they're turning now for three.
29:16An appeal here could be out.
29:18It's going to be terribly close.
29:20Well, very confident appeal.
29:22Not out, umpire Brooks.
29:27Well, I think that ball could have passed down the leg side.
29:29Let's have a look at Chappell well across.
29:32Oh, it hits him right in the pads, doesn't it?
29:35It's a very close one indeed.
29:43Again appeal for leg before.
29:45Not out.
29:48Well, I would think that Ian Chappell was outside the off stump for that for that particular delivery.
30:03Chappell almost playing the ball down onto the stumps, attempting to square drive and the ball find in the inside
30:10edge, bouncing between the popping crease and the stumps, missing them.
30:22This one he's got safely down the fine leg for four.
30:25Good stroke into the ground left hand.
30:39Good stroke.
30:41Nasty run rising.
30:43That hurt.
30:44Needless to say, let's hope there's no serious damage there.
30:51Arnold has been able to get some lift from that end.
30:54Quite surprising.
30:55And that ball was from a pretty good length.
31:03Thank you very much.
31:05Four runs.
31:12That was a good stroke.
31:20Pass point, a long chase for Luckhurst.
31:24It won't reach the boundary, but it couldn't go very much further on this ground, and they will run for.
31:32A great return.
31:33A magnificent return by Luckhurst.
31:35Right over the stumps from about 100 yards away.
31:47That's better.
31:49There's Redpath's 50.
31:51A lovely off drive.
31:54Wrong chase for Luckhurst.
31:57Redpath gets three runs.
32:01He's 51.
32:03Australia one for 164.
32:06Redpath's innings took the long time of 239 minutes.
32:11There were six fours in it.
32:17And crashed through the covers by Ian Chappell.
32:21Overpitched ball, I think, tossed up deliberately by Underwood.
32:27A hole to Redpath.
32:33And in the air, through the slips down to the fence for four.
32:36It wasn't a good shot, but he gets four runs for it.
32:45And that hit him hard on the ribs.
32:47That was one that must have hurt.
32:48It kicked up pretty quickly from short of a length.
33:03Good-looking shot from Redpath.
33:05I don't think there's any need to run.
33:07Plays that drive through.
33:09Mid-off, very well indeed.
33:13Four more.
33:14Redpath, 59.
33:16Chappell, 32.
33:18One for 184.
33:22A hole to Ian Chappell.
33:26And once again, Chappell hit on the fingers.
33:29Now, that's not jarring or hurting as much as the previous one.
33:39Well, Chappell getting off the inside edge, it appears.
33:41Coming right down to the fine leg boundary.
33:44I don't think Arnold will get anywhere near it.
33:45And it's into the fence for four.
33:46And let's watch the umpire here.
33:48Yes, that's four runs to Chappell.
33:50The 200 up for Australia.
33:52Ian Chappell is 45.
33:55Redpath, 64.
33:56One for 202.
33:58Scored in 280 minutes.
34:04And that one kicked.
34:06Now, that might have been a chance because it hit Cowdery
34:10on the foot by the look of it.
34:11And it certainly must have been in the air going down.
34:14Yes, possibly it was.
34:15But it hit him on the knee, as a matter of fact, if you can see.
34:25And that's going Astrid Arnold.
34:27Yes, wide of him.
34:29It wasn't really a good attempt to make that hit.
34:33I think he should have got across there.
34:41That's a very confident appeal for LBW.
34:44And that one comes forward.
34:55Chris Aholdet finally.
34:58That brings up Chappell's 50.
35:02Australia now 1 for 209
35:16in the air
35:17and it's a possible catch
35:18just to the feet of Arnold
35:21he drops it
35:22it was certainly a possible catch
35:24perhaps a more active man than Arnold
35:26could have got there to catch it
35:36and he's given out
35:39Ian Chappell not terribly happy about that one
35:41and I'm quite sure that Tony Gregg had a few words to him
35:45as he walked past him
35:46Ian Chappell not happy about it
35:50nevertheless he is out
35:52here it is again
35:53Chappell moving inside the line of the ball
35:57and it's very difficult to tell whether that was pad or bat
36:00Ian Chappell himself was firmly convinced that he didn't hit the ball
36:04he obviously exchanged a few words with Gregg
36:08on the way through
36:09and he's still very angry
36:13and there again he's telling them
36:15have a look at the scoreboard
36:16it's up there
36:17a wicket for me
36:23oh great stroke
36:24that's the best stroke of every pass in England
36:39and Underwood thought it was bat to pad
36:43so did Gregg
36:46and umpire Bailish didn't
36:48here it is again
36:56well of course we can't see very much
36:58because the body of both batsman and wicketkeeper
37:00hid the ball completely from us
37:08again where there is one patch in this wicket where the bowlers are getting some life
37:19oh he made contact with that one
37:21it was too fine for the one leg slip
37:24and it was just too wide for Alan not being this wicketkeeper
37:35and another edge for four
37:39and I think Tony Gregg having just an odd word there to
37:44Gregg Chappell
37:46that's about that stroke
37:56hook and just wide of Amos
37:59we'll count that one a let off
38:01it's four runs to Gregg Chappell
38:05he's 20
38:14hooking and out
38:18a good catch by Amos
38:20straight to him but fast
38:22and he was good enough to catch it
38:26and that's a vital breakthrough for England
38:28just before drinks
38:31Australia three for 248
38:34red path out
38:35caught Amos
38:36bowled Gregg
38:37for 83 runs
38:38Gregg to Ross Edwards
38:44fearful leg before could be out here must be very close
38:48that was very close
38:49well that was very very close indeed
38:51I think we'd better have a look at that one on the video disc replay again
38:54Ross Edwards shuffles across the crease
38:57never really plays forward
39:00the ball from Gregg there was shortish
39:04pitched in line and hit him
39:07fair in front of the stubs
39:08I thought
39:09Australia began the day at 274 for three
39:12needing another 103 runs
39:14to make England bat again
39:15I thought England started slight favourites this morning
39:18and they certainly needed to take two or three quick wickets in that first session
39:21as far as they were concerned
39:23Gregg Chappell was the main danger
39:24Peter Lever despite his bout of flu was on the field this morning
39:28and here he is now
39:29bowling the first over of the day to Ross Edwards
39:34and the first one of the day
39:35that's going out square
39:36a chase for old
39:37they've taken one
39:38they're coming back for two
39:39the return's on the way
39:40but Edwards very fast between wickets
39:42the return not a good one
39:45so Edwards to 11
39:47Gregg Chappell is 39
39:49Australia three for 276
39:58and that's one
39:59that's going square with a wicket
40:00it's going out towards the
40:01very long boundary out there
40:03they've taken two
40:04they'll make
40:04I should think a comfortable three
40:06yes they're coming through
40:07with the easy third run
40:07as old's return comes back
40:11Gregg Chappell to 44
40:13Edwards 18
40:14three for 288
40:23appeal for court behind
40:24he's out
40:25must have been off the glove
40:27but Edwards
40:27court not
40:28bold Arnold for 18
40:30Gregg Chappell not out 45
40:32four for 289
40:34Arnold
40:35two for 65
40:36well here you can see it
40:38it's short
40:38cutting across to the lakeside
40:40and it didn't connect bat
40:42but it took the glove
40:43and went through to Alan Knott
40:45who moved smartly across to the lakeside
40:47and threw the ball up in the air
40:49England has struck now
40:50in just the fourth over of the morning
40:52with only 20 minutes play
40:54on the board
40:55so Australia are struggling now
41:04appeal for leg before
41:05it might be close
41:06not out
41:07see Lever about to bowl there
41:09ball pitches on middle
41:11and cuts across fairly sharply
41:15Doug Walters with both feet
41:16off the ground in fact
41:17but I think it would have just
41:19missed the leg stump
41:19very close though
41:26that's hit
41:26forward of square leg
41:28that was a
41:28a forehand smash
41:30a tennis shot from Gregg Chappell
41:31it's going out towards that
41:32very long boundary on that side
41:34and that'll run a comfortable three
41:37that's the 50 to Gregg Chappell
41:45Arnold to Walters
41:51off the inside edge of the bat
41:53onto the pad
42:00I suppose for Walters
42:01the best means of defence
42:02is attack out there
42:07yes he's not a particularly
42:09technically correct player
42:11when he's going for his shots
42:13he's a difficult man to dismiss
42:15particularly if he gets a start
42:22and it bowled him
42:24that's bowled him
42:26taken the off bail
42:27so Walters has been bowled
42:29by Arnold for three
42:30Gregg Chappell is not out 50
42:32Australia in real trouble
42:34five for 297
42:35Arnold has three for 71
42:37and we can see that delivery
42:39cut away to slips
42:40and Doug Walters played
42:41across the line
42:42played inside the line
42:44moved his bat out
42:45to where the ball was
42:46after it had passed him
42:47and the ball just clipped
42:49the top of the off stump
42:54leave it to Gregg Chappell
42:58and that's going out square
43:00they've got one there
43:00and I think it is one only
43:02yes that's the 300 up for Australia
43:04Gregg Chappell is 51
43:06Marsh one
43:0718 extras
43:08five for 300
43:09runs scored
43:10in 458 minutes
43:21well Gregg Chappell really pounded that one
43:23it's going out towards that boundary
43:24and a long chase for Underwood
43:25he may not get this one
43:27it's just into the fence for four
43:29and Gregg Chappell to 57
43:44he's caught
43:45yes he's out
43:46caught by De Ness
43:47Marsh
43:48caught De Ness
43:49bowl lever one
43:50Gregg Chappell is not out
43:5251
43:53or 57
43:54Australia on their knees
43:56at the moment
43:56six for 306
43:58well that was a beautifully taken catch
44:01you see Lever pushing the ball wide of Marsh
44:04again outside the off stump
44:06Marsh
44:06with the weight on the back foot
44:08not really over the ball at all
44:10and the ball flew very sharply
44:12to Mike De Ness
44:13the finer of the two gullies
44:15and
44:16he took a very smart catch indeed
44:26good shot by Gregg Chappell
44:27racing out to the fence
44:29still before
44:31beautifully straight driven
44:36takes Chappell on to
44:3861
44:40and a six for 316
44:43Gregg
44:44to Gregg Chappell
44:47and a lovely shot by Chappell
44:49right through the mid-wicket area
44:51there's runs here
44:53taken two
44:54they'll probably run three
44:55they'll turn him back for their third
44:56I think Gregg Chappell is looking to retain the strike
45:00this is the last ball of the over
45:14Walker hits one uppishly but safely
45:16down to fine leg
45:17Arnold's down there
45:18one run
45:22Walker four
45:23Gregg Chappell 67
45:25six for 324
45:32Chappell drives
45:33beats Underwood
45:35lovely shot
45:35four runs
45:36bellend attempt by Underwood
45:38but
45:39the ball had too much pace on him
45:41for him
45:43and another lovely shot
45:45takes Gregg Chappell on to 71
45:46and a six for 329
45:54the cuts that runs here
45:56through the covers it goes
45:58they've got one
45:58they'll turn for two
45:59probably take three
46:00or Chappell not interested in the third run
46:03again
46:05having the back of his mind
46:07that he wants to retain the strike
46:08so two more to Walker
46:10takes him up to seven
46:17heads by Chappell
46:19down to the vacant third man position
46:20it'll probably be four
46:22ball slowing up
46:23as it's close to the boundary
46:24but it'll have
46:25sufficient impetus to
46:28make the boundary fence
46:29so four more to Chappell
46:30this is Gregg Chappell
46:31is on 76
46:32and a six for 336
46:39Chappell drives
46:40beautifully through the covers
46:42a long chase for Underwood
46:43with no avail
46:44four runs
46:47magnificent stroke
46:55through the covers once more
46:57there's a long chase for Underwood
46:58you'll probably get to it
46:59before it gets to the fence
47:00but they'll run two
47:01and back they'll go
47:04for the third run
47:08Chappell 85
47:09six for 348
47:14Walker on nine
47:23Bill for LBW
47:24turned down
47:26very confident one
47:27but probably just going
47:28outside the leg stump column
47:29I would have thought so
47:32here it is again
47:33let's have a look at this
47:35it's certainly pitching in line
47:39and my goodness me
47:41that one was close
47:46I would have thought
47:47it may have struck the leg stump
47:49umpire Brooks
47:50giving Walker
47:52the benefit of the doubt
47:53it must have been
47:54in a very faint doubt
48:05well it's not Walker's fault
48:06that he was given not out
48:07and I don't know
48:08that he really deserved
48:09to get a bouncer
48:10and Greg bowls to Greg Chappell
48:14shot runs here
48:16foot backward at point
48:17racing out towards the boundary
48:18a long chase
48:19out there for
48:21the fieldsman
48:22and he'll stop it
48:23a metre or so inside the fence
48:25that is Underwood
48:26and the batsman will run for
48:30good cricket
48:40a looser ball
48:41but Walker was a long way
48:42away from that
48:43he
48:44there's no outfield at all
48:45he appeared to try and hit that
48:47over the mid-wicket area
48:48but played much too soon
48:57he's caught and bowled
48:58well there's an important wicket
49:00Walker caught and bowled
49:02by Greg
49:02for 17
49:03Greg Chappell
49:04not out 96
49:05Australia 7 for 367
49:08and in real trouble now
49:10Mallet the new batsman
49:12and Greg has 2 for 83
49:14well after playing so well
49:15Max Walker didn't get
49:17to the pitch of that
49:18flight at
49:19off spinner
49:20and attempted to drive it hard
49:22but only succeeded
49:24in driving it straight back
49:25to Tony Gregg
49:25who took a catch
49:27about knee high
49:28without any trouble at all
49:29so Australia
49:30still 10 runs short
49:32of the
49:34target figure
49:35they must
49:35get 377
49:37to equal England score
49:38and only 3 wickets in hand
49:40now that wicket falling off
49:41the last ball of the over
49:42so it's lever
49:43to Greg Chappell
49:44Greg Chappell
49:4596
49:52that was on the foot
49:53too
49:53that must have hurt
49:54a bit
49:55bottom of the bat
49:56onto his foot
50:01but he's got one
50:02yes they're going
50:03shut up the stumps
50:03this could be out
50:04that was very close
50:06old shot
50:07just missing the stumps
50:09I should think
50:09that Mallet would be
50:10out of his ground
50:11had they been
50:11in contact with
50:13the ball on the stumps
50:20and that could be
50:21down to the boundary
50:21for his 100
50:23racing across the outfield
50:25yes it's all the way
50:26and that's Greg Chappell's
50:28second century of the series
50:29the only player
50:30in either team
50:31to score 200
50:37Greg Chappell 101
50:38Mallet yet to score
50:407 to 372
50:45and he's bowled him
50:47that could be the end of it
50:48Greg Chappell clean bowled
50:50Greg Chappell out for 102
50:52Mallet yet to score
50:54Australia
50:558 to 373
50:56and that means the match
50:58is all but all over
51:00however
51:01no praise can be too high
51:03for the innings of Greg Chappell
51:04he played some
51:05wonderful shots
51:06as we've mentioned
51:08two or three times
51:09under duress
51:10because he is
51:11not a well man at all
51:12but he's
51:14in his stay of
51:15around about
51:16two hours and ten minutes
51:17he played some
51:18absolutely glorious shots
51:19now Dimmock is a
51:21left-hander of course
51:22and to follow
51:23will be Dennis Lilley
51:24who's injured
51:25so Australia
51:26right down
51:27to its batting tail
51:43lever to Dimmock
51:54now if Australia can score
51:55four runs
51:56that will make the scores
51:57exactly level
51:58and from that point on
51:59England must bat again
52:01because if the scores are level
52:02England therefore has to come out
52:03and score one run to win
52:08not a bouncer
52:10it was about
52:10just hip high
52:11on the hip pad
52:12of course
52:12no problem there
52:13for the
52:15batsman on the elbow
52:15was it on the forearm
52:16yes it was over
52:17and above the hip
52:18it was not quite a bouncer
52:20but Dimmock doesn't look
52:21as
52:21he's very capable
52:23of handling
52:23a short rising ball
52:29and that must be caught
52:31behind
52:31yes he's out
52:34Dimmock
52:35caught not
52:35ball lever
52:36no score
52:37Mallet is not out
52:38no score
52:40Australia
52:40nine for 373
52:42last man to come in
52:43is Lilley
52:43and England
52:44still four runs ahead
52:47yes well
52:47Jeff Dimmock
52:48didn't look too happy
52:49you can see the ball
52:49pitching on about
52:50off stump
52:52and
52:54there's certainly
52:55a deflection
52:55but I wouldn't be surprised
52:56if that ball
52:57actually hit the off stump
52:58you know
52:58rather than hitting
52:59the edge of the bat
53:07well through
53:07Cattery's hands
53:08they're not going
53:09for a run
53:09it was bouncing
53:10to the ground
53:10first of all
53:11it wasn't a chance
53:39and that's in there
53:40could be out
53:40yes it's all over
53:43Mallet has been
53:44caught by Ed Rich
53:45bold Greg
53:46no score
53:47really not out
53:48no score
53:49Australia
53:50all out
53:50for 373
53:52England wins
53:53the last test
53:54of the series
53:54by an innings
53:55and four runs
53:56and the series
53:57finishes
53:57Australia
53:58four wins
53:59England won
54:00one game drawn
54:03well that was a good
54:04delivery too
54:04just to dwell on
54:05that victory
54:07that delivery
54:08from Tony Greg
54:10spun back quite sharply
54:11from the off
54:12and Ashley Mallet
54:13probing forward
54:13had really no idea
54:15how to keep it down
54:16to the ground
54:16and the ball
54:17lobbed very gently
54:18to John Ed Richard
54:19forward short leg
54:20and there's Captain
54:21Mike Dines
54:22with one of the spoils
54:24of victory
54:24he's grabbed a stunt
54:29well a nice gesture
54:30of that from Mike
54:31Dines
54:31to one of his
54:32great tormentors
54:33of the summer
54:34an innings and four
54:35runs
54:35well that's an
54:36overwhelming victory
54:36in anyone's language
54:37and particularly
54:38in the context
54:39of Anglo-Australian
54:40contests
54:41England played
54:42very very well
54:42and they deserved
54:43their victory
54:44but it would be
54:44unwise
54:45to consider that
54:46to be the gulf
54:47between the two sides
54:48as unwise in fact
54:49as it would be
54:49to consider that
54:50Australia might go
54:51to England
54:51in a few months
54:52time
54:52and win that
54:53four test series
54:54four to nil
54:55I thought this
54:56was a very good
54:57performance from
54:57England today
54:58they wrapped the game
54:59up nicely
55:00they played well
55:00throughout
55:01and they deserved
55:01their victory
55:02I think it should
55:03be underlined again
55:03though that Thompson
55:04and Lily weren't
55:05playing
55:05and those two
55:06fastballers being out
55:07made a great
55:08difference to the
55:09technique of the
55:09England batsmen
55:10in fact there were
55:11times in this match
55:12where the England
55:13batsmen looked to be
55:14in complete control
55:14and I think it's
55:15fair to say
55:16that that's the first
55:16time it's happened
55:17this summer
55:18time
