00:16Well, England faced all the problems on the first morning of this third test match in Melbourne.
00:20There were two down in the series with four matches still to go and their batting was in
00:24complete disarray from the efforts of the Australian pace bowlers Geoff Thompson and
00:28Dennis Lilly. But on the other side, I suppose Ian Chappell couldn't really have cared less whether
00:33or not he won the toss this morning and indeed whether or not he fielded or batted. Well, as it
00:38happened, he won the toss and once again he put England in the second match in succession. The
00:43fourth time he's done that in test matches and he's just one short now of the five-timer record
00:47established by Gary Sobers of the West Indies. The Australian selectors left out Terry Jenner and
00:52England omitted Geoff Arnold from the original 12 nominated to play in this match and the game
00:57began on a surface that contained quite a bit of moisture, not quite as much as in some test
01:02matches I've seen here in recent summers though. The match began with Dennis Lilly bowling from the
01:08members end. The batsman was Dennis Amos and he's just recovered from injuries sustained in the Brisbane
01:13test. And that's the first run of the test. They've come to take at least one here, possibly two.
01:19Wally Edwards is the fieldsman and they come back for a second run. So Amos two, Lloyd has not scored,
01:25England none for two. The wicket does have a little bit of more moisture in it than a normal Melbourne
01:31wicket. There's a very even cover of grass, which is tinged with green.
01:52Thompson bowling to Lloyd. And in the air, it's going to be safe over the top of the slipfieldsman. Walters
01:58and Redpath both after it and it's going to be Redpath who'll get there. They come back for the second.
02:11Well, it's a thick edge and it'll be four runs off the bat, I think. We'll wait for the umpire.
02:15Yes, four runs.
02:21Well played.
02:29Now we have Thompson to Lloyd.
02:34A good ball. Won't be out. Coming up too high.
02:43Lloyd will have rather bitter memories of the Perth game from being hit by Thompson. About six inches away from
02:52where that one hit him.
02:56Thompson's boot again. Troubles in his boot base.
03:00Yes, he had quite a deal of trouble in Perth, as I remember. But there's that field. What an aggressive
03:05attacking offside field. They ring Corton on the offside. So it's now Thompson to Lloyd.
03:13Nasty one. He could be out here. And he is. He's got caught by Mallet in the gully. The easiest
03:20of catches from a rising ball from Thompson. And Lloyd is out. Here's the replay again. You'll see Short and
03:27Lloyd not able to get up high enough to get the bat to it and just going up in the
03:32air in a slow loop.
03:34Will we see Mallet actually catch it? Yes, the simplest of catches. You'll see Dennis Lilley in a very silly
03:41position there. Over the top for four.
03:49Lilley perhaps in no danger there, but he's certainly very close to Ed Richard, but it's the ball hard at
03:54him. Lilley could know all about it.
04:07Lilley's caught it. I think he was looking at the umpire with a great deal of hope but no anticipation
04:14because it was very clear that Ed Rich didn't hit that one onto his pad.
04:19A huge crowd here. Something like 70,000 to watch the first day of this game. Magnificent scene here from
04:26this largest sporting arena in Australia.
04:28And of course it can't be full. It holds 130,000, but comfortably full for a cricket ground. Here's Walker
04:34ball into Cowdery.
04:37And Cowdery gets run straight away. It's going down towards the boundary. A long chase for Walters. I don't think
04:42he'll get it. The ball's slowing down, but into the fence it goes.
04:49No ball called. That's gone right down towards the boundary. That could be four. Way over the head of Marsh.
04:53Let's see what happens here. Yes, four byes it would be.
04:57That was a sizzling bounce. That went so high that Marsh had no hope at all.
05:09Maybe dropped. I think he was dropped.
05:34And well hit by Ed Rich. That's going out towards the boundary. That should be four.
05:41Thompson to Cowdery.
05:48Oh, and a fast ball. A punt from the peel. And he's out.
05:52Out, LBW. Cowdery out for 35. Here's the replay.
05:59Cowdery playing across it slightly. Right the way back.
06:03The ball's pitching in line and Cowdery hit. Plum in front.
06:13Magnificent place of wicket-keeping by Yash.
06:16And he's given out by the umpire at the bowler's end. He's given out, caught behind, Frank Tyson.
06:24Yes, must have been caught behind on the leg side. And Ed Rich moves inside the line.
06:34Very difficult to see whether there's any contact at all.
06:38Because the body was completely masking the ball up to the very last moment.
06:43But he's not out stumped, that's quite obvious. But the short leg position there in
06:49Greg Chattel was up in the air, obviously because he felt that he'd seen something.
06:52We have three slips, two gullies, a deep point, and a cover. Only two onside fields.
07:02And over the top of slips, down for four. That's the typical Greg shot. He played that so often in
07:07Brisbane.
07:14And that's over the top of the slips again. Down it goes towards the boundary. And four more to Greg.
07:26And good shot again from Greg. That's coming down towards the boundary. A remarkable shot.
07:30It might get to the flints for four. It's slowing down. Dennis Lee's onto it. Let's see. And it's four
07:35more.
07:41And a peel from court behind. He's out.
07:47Danesse, Portmarsh, rolled mallet for eight. Greg is not out 21. It's 5 for 1.41.
07:54Danesse goes back and attempts that cut again against the spin. Catches the top edge. And Rod Marsh coming up
08:00with the ball.
08:10And that's going down towards the boundary again. I think that's four all the way.
08:14Between the gap of the second slip and the gully.
08:21And over the head of the slip fieldsman, Greg Partham. Down towards the boundary it comes. I think Ian Chappell
08:26will get this one.
08:27They've taken two. Let's see if Greg goes for three. He's on the way. There's danger here.
08:32And is he out? He's out. Run out. Greg doesn't believe it. He's been run out.
08:42Greg sitting off that third run. A wonderful throwback by Ian Chappell. And Greg has run out for 28.
08:48But he's not out 7. 6 for 157.
08:51Here's the disc. We see Ian Chappell pick up the ball. It's a strong throwback.
08:56Greg struggling. The ball in Marsha's gloves now.
09:00The bales are taken off. Oh, it's a whisker in that one.
09:04Really again.
09:13Oh, it's out. Off the bad handle. Off the bad handle.
09:17After a full day's play in the first day of the third test match in Melbourne, England had slouched their
09:23way to 7 for 176 and they weren't in very good shape.
09:26They had Alan Knott there. Very calm in a crisis as always. But they only had Derek Underwood and Bob
09:32Willis and Mike Hendrick to stay with him.
09:37Good stroke. High to the fence square of the wicket.
09:42The ball began to the slips. You see them three waiting and two more gullies. Two leg slips and a
09:47wicket keeper. What a cordon that is behind the wicket.
09:51Yes, Underwood really did back away though. He needed Radar to make contact with that delivery.
10:00There it is. More runs over the top edge certainly, but safely enough above Redpath.
10:09Two more to Underwood.
10:19It's another good stroke. Past Edwards.
10:23Waiting towards the boundary. I think Edwards will pick it up just in front of the fence. He does so.
10:29Meanwhile, Knott has run three.
10:32There's a very good return from Ross Edwards to Wally Edwards.
10:42One very nasty ball.
10:46One wonders about bowling these sort of deliveries to bowlers, because Underwood is a bowler.
10:52This is the 14th over with the second new ball. So far, only one wicket has fallen to it.
10:59Oh, great stroke. Through the gully for four.
11:04Thompson again too.
11:06Knott.
11:11Nasty bouncer.
11:12However, he's playing well for his 38.
11:21This time it's a well played stroke. Down onto the ground. Through the gully.
11:24Last point for four runs. Well played.
11:31Walker bowls to Underwood.
11:38Forward and out, I would think.
11:40Yes, out, caught behind.
11:42Underwood out. Caught Marsh.
11:45Bowled Walker for nine.
11:47And England have lost their eighth wicket for 213.
11:55That's the drive. It's down the middle of the bat. There's no one at mid off.
11:59That's a long chase to the fence.
12:02For Ross Edwards. He can't reach it.
12:04Well played by Willis.
12:06A good drive for four. He's seven. England eight for 225.
12:11Here's Thompson once more. Back into the attack.
12:13He'll bother to Knott.
12:16Knott immediately picks up at least one run. He will.
12:20No, he's not coming back for the second.
12:23And that's Knott's 50.
12:26England eight for 228.
12:28And Knott getting a very well deserved round of applause.
12:33A fine innings for England.
12:37Thompson now to Willis.
12:40There'll be four runs.
12:46A forward leg glance, mainly off the edge.
12:52Thompson to Willis.
12:55Bang, up in the air.
12:56This is a possible catch, but a very difficult one.
12:59Walters.
13:00And what a good catch it was.
13:02What a good catch.
13:05Willis out. Caught Walters.
13:07Bowled Thompson for third inning, England nine for 232.
13:17And that's going out towards the boundary of the square leg.
13:19There's no fieldsman within about 50 or 60 meters of that.
13:21And that should be four.
13:24Yes, going off a very thick inside edge, but it's four runs and they all count.
13:28So, Hendrick on to eight.
13:30Knott is 51.
13:32England nine for 241.
13:40And bowled in.
13:42Thompson finishes with four wickets.
13:44England all out, 242.
13:46Wonderful crowd here at the MCG and 54,000 people today watched Bob Willis bowl the first over of the
13:52Australian innings to Ian Redpath.
13:56And runs here straight away down towards the boundary, going right across the Southfield very quickly.
14:00I don't think this will be four.
14:02They've taken two.
14:03That's Greg Fielding down there.
14:04And they're coming back for three.
14:08And the first runs to Australia.
14:26There's a good stroke.
14:27Threw mid off.
14:28That'll be four.
14:31No way on earth that'll be stopped.
14:39There's a good stroke.
14:40A lovely drive.
14:42Four run.
14:43Beautiful stroke by Redpath.
14:51There's a lofted stroke and a good one.
14:54Into the long line fence for four.
15:01Lofted again.
15:02Over mid off.
15:03It's come.
15:05It's a long off boundary for another good stroke.
15:17And hit over the head of Lloyd.
15:18It's going down towards the boundary.
15:20It's slowing right down.
15:21It mightn't quite reach it.
15:22Underwood could get to it.
15:22He's got a long way to come around the boundary.
15:24They've taken two.
15:25And they'll go back for three.
15:26We now see the umpire's asking the batsmen whether they want to continue.
15:31I would think they would.
15:35Want to continue.
15:36It would be in Australia's interest.
15:38But no.
15:38They're not.
15:39They're coming off the ground.
15:42England faced plenty of problems on this third day of the Melbourne Test match.
15:46Their own first innings total of only 242.
15:49Not very good that.
15:50And Australia 63 without loss overnight.
15:52Although Australia had the added handicap of having Ian Chappell with a dislocated finger batting at number six.
15:58The England bowling attack was reduced by the loss of Mike Hendrick.
16:02A sad loss this.
16:02Hendrick with a strained leg muscle and unable to bowl today.
16:06And indeed unlikely to take any further part in the match.
16:09They were reduced then to a four man bowling attack.
16:12And Bob Willis.
16:13The best and most successful of these bowlers in the first and second Test matches.
16:18Bowls now the first over of the day to Wally Edwards.
16:21Willis is bowling now from the members end.
16:24And that's going in there.
16:25He could be caught.
16:26Yes he's out.
16:27Caught to Ness.
16:29Not a good shot at all by Edwards.
16:31So Wally Edwards is caught to Ness.
16:33Bowled Willis for 29.
16:35Red path not out 35.
16:37Australia 1 for 65.
16:38Here's Willis.
16:39First ball to Greg Chappell.
16:43And Greg Chappell off the mark straight away.
16:45That's down to the backwards square leg.
16:56And that's a chance.
16:57Caught.
16:57Yes he's out.
16:58Caught by Greg.
17:00Off the hand I'd say.
17:01But we'll see that and replay.
17:02Greg Chappell.
17:03Caught Greg Bowled Willis for 2.
17:05Red path not out 35.
17:06Here's the replay.
17:07I think it just caught the shoulder of the bat.
17:09It was a good delivery.
17:10The variation in bounce.
17:11This one really took off.
17:13From about half way down the wicket.
17:14Greg Chappell is right over behind it.
17:16But it caught the shoulder of the bat.
17:18And dollied very easily into the slips.
17:20And Tony Greg was able to move across.
17:23And take the catch.
17:25So now.
17:25The spin of Titmuss from the far end.
17:27He'll be bowing to Ross Edwards.
17:35England has two spinners in the game.
17:37Titmuss and Underwood who are specialists.
17:38And the best time to spinners to operate is in the last innings.
17:42Think back.
17:43Think back.
17:43Remember that Ian Chappell sent England in to bat.
17:49Edrich.
17:51Notice Fred Titmuss bowled that one from quite wide out.
17:54Angling the ball in at the stumps.
17:57It's got marvellous variation in width of the crease and in arm height.
18:03And he's caught.
18:04And he's caught.
18:04Yes.
18:05Caught by Cowdery.
18:06Faster one from Titmuss.
18:07Edwards caught Cowdery.
18:08Bowled Titmuss.
18:09For one.
18:11Australia collapsing to three for 68.
18:16And that's it.
18:17Down through mid on.
18:18Beautiful shot that one.
18:19It's coming out towards the boundary.
18:20It might slow down.
18:22It's just rolling slowly in towards the fence.
18:24Underwood should get it.
18:25They've taken two.
18:25They might run four.
18:27No three only.
18:29I think they expected the ball to hit the fence.
18:32And they possibly might have run four.
18:33But that's the situation.
18:35Three for 76.
18:36Walters on to six.
18:41And he's hit that hard and high over the mid-wicket area.
18:44And way to the fence for four.
18:47Just a fraction short.
18:48And Walters moving right inside it.
18:51Fred Titmuss to Bowles.
18:52Time to Doug Walters.
18:53Walters on 15.
18:57Lovely stroke.
19:00Titmuss just.
19:01Yes.
19:02Into the fence.
19:08Another great stroke through mid-wicket.
19:10It's a long chase for the Ness.
19:13The Batchmen have run two.
19:15And there's the return comes back to Titmuss.
19:18You saw Walters complete his third run.
19:21He's 22.
19:26Australia now needing one run for the 100.
19:40More sedate stroke.
19:41An effective stroke by Redpath.
19:43One run.
19:44Good fielding by the Ness.
19:46Redpath 45.
19:48And Australia's first hundred comes up.
19:50Three for 100.
19:56Good drive.
19:57And there's the 50.
19:58A lovely straight drive by Redpath.
20:03The ball picked up by Amos.
20:08And Redpath gets three more runs.
20:11He moves on to 52.
20:13A good innings for Australia.
20:16Fairly slow one.
20:17But a valuable one.
20:18And Australia now three for 113.
20:23Greg again to Walters.
20:29And they're cooking a ball off his stumps down through mid-wicket.
20:33A long chase for Lloyd.
20:34He won't beat it to the fence.
20:38And Doug Walters starting to give the crowd the cricket that they've wanted for three days.
20:42The 50 partnership up in 76 minutes.
20:50And he's out.
20:53Greg to Redpath.
20:58He does attempt to cut and he's out.
21:07And is he out?
21:08Playing forward.
21:09Asking umpire Baylish.
21:10Not having anything to do with it.
21:13And the very disappointed England side.
21:15Let's watch this again.
21:17The main question to be answered is whether Chappell edged the ball onto his pad.
21:22For it to bounce from there into the hands of Greg.
21:30And of course with Alan not standing there, there's very little we can see.
21:42It's Amos.
21:48We're looking for signs to see if Ian Chappell is in any way restricted in his batting.
21:52So far he hasn't played any attacking shots.
21:56The injury was to his right hand from my memory.
21:59Right forefinger.
22:11Yes, I had word that he had in fact dislocated the index finger of the right hand.
22:18So it would be extremely painful.
22:31And runs to Ian Chappell.
22:33That's a nice shot going down towards the boundary.
22:34It probably won't be four but they could get three here.
22:37They're turning to the third now.
22:38That's Amos fielding.
22:40And Amos' throw is a good one.
22:42That is Amos a right hand bat.
22:44Left arm throw.
22:45Three more to Ian Chappell.
22:46He's five.
22:47Rod Marsh yet to score.
22:48Australia five for 129.
22:51And they're the first runs since the lunch break.
22:54With two days remaining it's going to be very difficult for Australia to force a win.
22:58But perhaps England may be able to.
23:01Well that's to Ian Chappell.
23:03And he's hit that one as out there towards Old.
23:05And Old getting underneath it.
23:06Is he?
23:06Just dropped it.
23:07Great attempt.
23:10Four runs but a mighty effort by Old.
23:16This is his eighth over today.
23:18So he's going to have to have a rest before he can take the second new ball.
23:24At that time it's going out towards the boundary.
23:26No mistake about that.
23:28That was hit well in front of Squareleg.
23:29An indication of a good shot along the ground all the way.
23:38And cracked beautifully by Ian Chappell.
23:40It's going out towards the boundary.
23:42If the ball carries it will be four but it mightn't quite get there.
23:45Tickness is taken onto it.
23:46They could run for here if they want to.
23:48Let's see what happens.
23:48They're turning and they're going for four.
23:50They'll run them all the way and run them easily.
23:52Just walking through for the fourth run.
23:59Round arm and hit right down to the prime leg.
24:01As fine as could possibly be.
24:03And that's going to be four.
24:04Unusual ball.
24:05Unusual shot.
24:06Four runs.
24:13And just right of the fieldsman.
24:15It could be four.
24:15It's going out towards the boundary.
24:17Old's racing for it and can cover.
24:19I think we'll get to it.
24:20They've taken two.
24:20I don't think they'll try for four this time.
24:22Old has a fine arm.
24:26So three more.
24:34There it goes.
24:35Out towards the boundary.
24:36And that's a good looking shot.
24:38Bouncing hard into the fence.
24:40He really hit that well.
24:41That's as good as a shot he's played.
24:44Ian Chappell, 31.
24:46Marsh eight.
24:47Five for 163.
24:48And Ian Chappell, the number of fours.
24:50I think he's hit about five of them, hasn't he?
24:52Five fours in 31.
25:00And that's a typical Marsh shot.
25:02Down the ground it goes.
25:03Four runs.
25:03What a good shot.
25:07Well, Willis had no more than three or four metres to move
25:10and went sailing past him like a rocket.
25:12And that's the first authentic Marsh drive
25:16that we've seen in this innings.
25:17And he hit that really well.
25:19Marsh is 12.
25:20Ian Chappell, 31.
25:21Five for 168.
25:23And the new ball can have the effect
25:25of speeding up the scoring rate slightly at times
25:27with the ball coming off a bit faster.
25:30And with Hendrick off the field,
25:31there's only one other bowler that can share the new ball
25:34with Willis in terms of pace.
25:36And that's Gregg.
25:38As I suggested before, there's no reason why Underwood, for example,
25:41couldn't take a new ball.
25:42No, quite.
25:43But I can see Tony Gregg warming up there,
25:45so he will presumably take the new ball.
25:51And they're taking a run here.
25:53There's an appeal.
25:53He's out.
25:54He's out.
25:55Ian Chappell is out leg before.
25:59Drinks are being taken.
26:00Marsh is not out.
26:0112.
26:02Australia, six for 173.
26:09Oh, a nasty bouncer.
26:11And it's become a feature of this series
26:14as we've said on other occasions
26:16that the Fastballers Union no longer applies.
26:24Marsh quite aware that he's got a load to carry
26:29to make the Australian score respectable
26:31as Willis bowles to him.
26:34Driving and well through mid-on.
26:37Coming down towards Long on.
26:38A long chase for Underwood.
26:39It won't reach the fence.
26:43I think you know that three runs will have been scored.
26:54Good drive.
26:56Long chase for Underwood again.
26:59And again, there will be three runs scored,
27:01unless I'm mistaken.
27:03And here comes Walker back for the third.
27:16There is the hook and it's a possible catch.
27:20It's not.
27:20It went to about the only safe spot
27:22that it could have gone on the onside.
27:24There was a man in front of square leg.
27:26There was another man at wide mid-on.
27:30Greg to Marsh.
27:33Bang.
27:37Through wide mid-on to the Long on fence.
27:42Much to the delight of the large crowd.
27:47Marsh 22, six for 191.
27:51Once again, the weather is looking a little bit ominous.
27:54Black clouds in the west as Greg bowls to Walker.
28:01We'll drive in the air, but through the covers.
28:03Officially past the Ness.
28:05200 is up.
28:06Walker gets two.
28:10Walker moves on to 12.
28:12And Australia six for 201.
28:15And it's been a fairly hard road for Australia.
28:19Underwood to Balton Marsh.
28:21And Marsh has a go at that one.
28:23It's going out towards the boundary.
28:25And Greg may just get to it.
28:26He does.
28:27They've taken one.
28:28Coming back for two.
28:32That's the first time Marsh has really tried to get under one
28:36and hit it hard and high out on the onside.
28:37He gets two for the shot.
28:45And this time it's going backward of square.
28:46Could be four.
28:47I don't think Greg will get to it.
29:02And straight down the ground.
29:04Great shot.
29:05That's right down.
29:06Almost into the fence on the first bounce.
29:08Straight right over to Balton's head.
29:16He had a go at that one.
29:17And he's connected.
29:18And it's going out towards the boundary.
29:20And it's going to be four.
29:27It's a funny old sweep stroke.
29:29And I'm not making contact.
29:31Marsh was trying to hit that ball very fine.
29:34The one man.
29:35Oh there are two men in fact.
29:37Behind the umpire on the square.
29:39On the uh.
29:41League side.
29:41I'll talk a bit more about that in a moment.
29:43This one's in there.
29:45This could be out.
29:45This one here's out.
29:47Well I won't talk about it anymore.
29:48That was out caught by.
29:52In the bowling of Titmuss.
29:54And Marsh is out for 44.
29:56And that's a most valuable wicket.
29:58And a most opportune time for England.
30:00Seven for 237.
30:05Willis again to Walker.
30:06Walker on 30.
30:10And he's out this time.
30:11I think he's warped.
30:14And that was very good.
30:15Because umpire Brooks.
30:17Made no move to give him out.
30:19Perhaps because Walker had made the decision for him.
30:22But Walker knew that he was out.
30:24And uh.
30:25He walked off the ground immediately.
30:26He's out.
30:27Caught by Knott.
30:28From the bowling of Willis.
30:29For 30.
30:30And two wickets have fallen on 237.
30:37Titmuss.
30:41A very confident appeal.
30:43By Titmuss.
30:45Very confident.
30:46He's upset about it.
30:47He thought that one was plumb.
30:51There's no pleasure on his face at all.
30:53He wonders why not.
30:58He's showing it a bit too much too I think.
31:02And five Bailish is there to adjudicate.
31:04And he's decided it was not out.
31:07Titmuss.
31:10Bowling.
31:11To Mallet.
31:15He might be run out if he doesn't hurry.
31:17Yeah.
31:17I think he might be.
31:18He is out.
31:18He is out.
31:19Run out.
31:20One ball later.
31:27Is the run out on here?
31:28No.
31:28Lilly's back.
31:31Thompson forgot about running then.
31:33Lilly was halfway down the pitch.
31:34There was a run in it.
31:35Had they both gone.
31:36But Thompson was more concerned about protecting himself.
31:41And thinking.
31:41Well if he's going to bowl bounces of me.
31:43Just wait till I bowl shortly.
31:53And bowled.
31:55And England take the lead.
31:57Willis finishes up with the excellent figures of five for 61.
32:02A great bowling performance by him.
32:04Lillie bowled.
32:06Willis for two.
32:07Thompson not out two.
32:09Four extras.
32:11Australia all out for 241.
32:14The fourth day began with England one for no wicket.
32:17And much speculation about Mike Dinesa's possible tactics.
32:21Would he opt for all out defence and the chance of a draw.
32:24Or would it be good sensible attack and the opportunity of a victory.
32:27Well it didn't take us long to find out.
32:29And we join play now with Geoff Thompson the Australian opening bowler.
32:33Bowling the first over of the day from the southern end.
32:35And the batsman is Dennis Amos.
32:38And runs.
32:39That's a good shot for Amos.
32:40Down to the boundary it goes.
32:41That'll be four all the way.
32:48And there are a few more.
32:49That's four again.
32:51Wide ball.
32:52And he really slammed that through the.
32:55Galley area.
32:56The cuts.
32:57Another one for him.
33:05Four slips at the moment.
33:06How long they'll wait for him.
33:07They'll be there I don't know.
33:10I'm taking some catches between them haven't they in this series.
33:18And was that a chance?
33:20Now something had moved away.
33:22Now I don't think so.
33:24And nobody reacted to it in Chappell who injured his hand.
33:27That right forefinger of his.
33:29In fact it was a dislocation.
33:37And wide have got the third slip Walters.
33:39It's down to the fence for four.
33:41They refused to play shots in the first innings.
33:43And it was just a matter of how long they'd last.
33:46Certainly not a matter of how many runs they'd score.
33:48But Dennis Amos took full.
33:50Opportunity to score runs when the field was in close.
33:53Many gaps and he found them quite often.
33:54He has found them this morning.
33:58Oh good shot again.
33:59That's a beautiful shot.
34:00What a good shot.
34:09Oh well played.
34:11Good shot.
34:11He forced that.
34:12A good ball on the stumps for two.
34:15Through the cover area.
34:16And he won't get three.
34:17Because the return from Ross Edwards comes back.
34:20But in its own way that was almost as good a shot as the last one.
34:28And Lloyds slashing that pass point.
34:30It's going out to the boundary.
34:31No chance for anybody at all.
34:32And that's going to be Lloyds first four this morning.
34:40And that's Thompson once again.
34:42He'll be bowled into Amos.
34:46And a good shot again.
34:47That's pushed right at mid-wicket.
34:48And he just placed it where he wanted to.
34:50He's coming back for two.
34:51I don't think there will be three unless they're going.
34:53Yes they're running for three.
34:54And they're looking for those runs.
34:56Well run.
34:59And that's good running.
35:01That's beautiful running between the wickets.
35:07That's cracked hard down towards the boundary.
35:09That's going to be four.
35:10No chance for the fieldsman.
35:16Thompson to Amos.
35:19And there's a good shot through point.
35:22Amos coming back for the second.
35:24Well run.
35:24Return coming back from Wally Edwards.
35:28Amos 50.
35:30And what a great innings that's been.
35:32England none for 72.
35:36The 50 coming up in just over the hour.
35:3969 minutes.
35:40And it's Walker bowling to him.
35:43Full toss and beautifully played through square leg.
35:47To the square leg fence for four.
35:49The chase has been given up.
35:57Straight.
36:00It's a long chase for Ross Edwards.
36:02He will not beat the ball to the fence or to the side screen.
36:06The side screen being hit means that four runs are scored.
36:14Gives Amos the chance to drive beautifully through the covers.
36:17A long chase for Ross Edwards.
36:19There will be three.
36:25What a lovely cover drive and a good return by Edwards.
36:34Well it's the 100 now.
36:37Past Thompson at mid on.
36:39And being picked up by Walters.
36:41Going down to long on.
36:44Lloyd gets two.
36:45He is 36.
36:47And England none for 101.
36:49And a magnificent 100 partnership as it has been.
36:54Walker.
36:55To Amos.
36:56Amos on 64.
37:00Lovely stroke.
37:02Through the covers.
37:03The long chase for Ross Edwards.
37:06He will pick it up.
37:08In the meanwhile another three runs to Amos.
37:12It's very easy three but not enough time for four.
37:21This one has got past fine leg.
37:24It's Lilly.
37:25It won't be stopped.
37:28Mallet again to Lloyd.
37:34Lloyd.
37:34Yes he's out.
37:35Caught and bow.
37:37It looked as though Lloyd had played a bump ball to Mallet.
37:41But no.
37:42Straight back to Mallet.
37:43Lily to Amos.
37:47And no.
37:48Dropping short of the fieldsman.
37:57He chanced.
37:58Brilliantly caught.
37:59Magnificent catch by Greg Chappell.
38:01Left-hander.
38:02Great catch.
38:04Calvary caught Greg Chappell.
38:05Bolled Lilly for eight.
38:06Lilly has one for 31.
38:08Two for 1.34.
38:09Lilly about to deliver the ball.
38:11The ball took off.
38:12And it caught the shoulder of the blade.
38:14There was no chance of getting out of the road of it.
38:16And Greg Chappell came across in front of his brother
38:18and plucked a brilliant left-handed catch.
38:23And there's the drive again.
38:24That's beautifully timed through the cover field.
38:26A chase out there towards the boundary.
38:27The ball might just win here.
38:28It's going to be very close.
38:29Thompson just gets it.
38:30They've taken two.
38:31Coming back for three.
38:43Going for a run.
38:45Yes, Dinesse is one.
38:47Amos, 88.
38:49Three for 1.53.
38:51Dinesse is suggesting to Amos that it is necessary for England to not lose wickets at this stage.
39:02It's vital that they get a lot more runs today.
39:05They do have Greg and not particularly to come.
39:08Greg can get runs quickly.
39:09But at the moment, England need to consolidate.
39:11And it's Thompson bowling to Dinesse.
39:15Oh, and it's a good one.
39:16And he's out.
39:18That was a good ball.
39:20That was a good ball.
39:20Leaving Dinesse.
39:21Going away off the track.
39:22Finding the outside edge of Dinesse's bat.
39:25And he's out for two.
39:2990 out of 158.
39:39In the air and out.
39:43Caught by Ian Chappell at wide mid on for 90.
39:49England 5 for 158.
39:56And Mallet has taken his second wicket.
39:592 for 29.
40:00A well deserved wicket.
40:02And a great innings.
40:05Unfortunately, I think in the minds of most people, curtailed with him on 90.
40:12Amos 90.
40:13England 5 for 158.
40:16And England now from being in a very good position of none for 115 have fallen away to this not
40:23so good score of 5 for 158.
40:29Thompson to not.
40:34Oh, and he's out.
40:36And a very good catch.
40:39Caught Marsh.
40:41Bowled Thompson before the ball going straight to first slip.
40:45But Marsh intercepting in front of Chappell at first slip.
40:48Thompson is now bowling to Titmuss with two slips.
40:52Two gullies.
40:56There they are.
40:57That gap.
40:58A rather unusual gap.
40:59A third slip.
41:00It's not all that often we see two gullies, but there they are.
41:03And then the other men on the offside are a point and a wide mid off.
41:07Thompson to Titmuss.
41:12And that's hurt.
41:14That's hurt.
41:15That's hurt.
41:15Letting the ball go.
41:18And, well, you saw what happened.
41:21Pads are coming off straight away.
41:23So it's pretty clear that he's been badly hurt.
41:28Only two men on the offside in front of the stumps.
41:33There's Walters who's just in front of point.
41:35And then the only other man is Ross Edwards at a wide mid off position.
41:40So there's plenty of scope for the drive.
41:43But Lily not normally throwing them up far enough for it.
41:46That's short.
41:47And just about a catch to Walters.
41:49But just to his left.
41:52Sufficiently so for the ball to go down to Mallet,
41:56who was fielding at third man having to run around square of the wicket.
42:02Mallet bowling to Titmuss.
42:03The first over after tee.
42:05And that's bowled him.
42:08And clean through.
42:09And Titmuss has been bowled by Mallet without scoring.
42:13Greg is not out 16.
42:14And this remarkable match continues.
42:16Seven for 178.
42:24And Underwood's shot is going out towards the boundary.
42:27He'll get four.
42:31It's a very pleasant day in Melbourne.
42:33It's not a hot day.
42:35Temperature in the low twenties.
42:36The very low twenties.
42:37Blue sky.
42:38Not exactly surfing weather.
42:40But a few clouds coming over from the northerly side of this ground.
42:45But at the moment it looks fine.
42:49And he's caught.
42:50Yes he's out.
42:52Ian Chappell takes the catch.
42:55Underwood caught Ian Chappell.
42:56Bowled Mallet for four.
42:59Greg is not out 16.
43:01England eight for 182.
43:03And Mallet has four for 40.
43:05Mallet to two Greg.
43:07And he's hit that.
43:08Out high over mid off.
43:10Way into the crowd perhaps for six is it?
43:11Six.
43:12A great shot.
43:13Over extra cover.
43:14All right.
43:15We haven't seen Tony Greg.
43:17Although he's not on strike.
43:18Haven't seen him employ that slash outside the off stump as yet.
43:24And that's over the head of slips.
43:26Four.
43:26Willis does a Tony Greg for you.
43:28Four.
43:28Right down to the boundary for four.
43:30Greg on 31.
43:34There's a great hit over Long on.
43:36One.
43:37And it will not be six.
43:38But it's second bounce into the fence.
43:44He's hit it in the air again.
43:45It could be out.
43:47On the other hand it was just far enough to beat Jeff Thompson.
43:53And that very good hit although a dangerous hit produced one run only.
44:01That one's well hit in the middle of the bat over square leg for four.
44:08Still with the old ball.
44:11Bowling to Greg.
44:14And there's a good stroke behind square leg.
44:17Very long chase for Walker.
44:19Walker.
44:23It has gone into the fence.
44:24I thought for one moment that Walker may have played it with his foot.
44:28Or kept it out.
44:29He hasn't.
44:30A very good stroke by Greg.
44:32He's got 53 now.
44:34And England eight for 231.
44:37One of Greg's best innings for England.
44:46And hasn't he hit that well.
44:47This one for four.
44:50Through mid on.
44:52Tremendous stroke that.
44:55At a most vital time.
45:00He's been caught magnificently.
45:05A magnificent catch by Greg Chappell in the gully.
45:11There was only the one slip in the gully.
45:13Here's the replay.
45:13Watch this now.
45:14A good cut.
45:16Just a slight top edge and a magnificent catch.
45:20Nine for 238.
45:22Thompson to bowl to Willis.
45:26He's done that one pretty well through the covers for four.
45:31I think one just on a length at the stumps would be a useful delivery right now.
45:41Like that.
45:42One of those occasions Frank when one can nominate it.
45:45So there we are.
45:47England all out for 244.
45:50Australia needing 246 runs to win this match.
45:54Australia 246 to win.
45:56Five hours and 15 overs to play.
45:58And England needing 10 wickets for victory.
46:00That was the situation at the start of play on the final day of this enthralling test match at the
46:05Melbourne Cricket Ground.
46:0640,000 people turned up to watch what promised to be a wonderfully exciting day's cricket.
46:14Greg Bowling, the first over to Edwards.
46:18A confident appeal for LBW and he is out.
46:22Out LBW for no score.
46:25And England have struck.
46:26Australia one for four.
46:28And I'm sure a very disappointed Wally Edwards.
46:30As well.
46:34He's out.
46:36LBW.
46:38Two Australian wickets fallen this morning for the addition of one run.
46:42And that was a leg by.
46:43Ian Chappell.
46:45LBW to Willis for no score.
46:48Here it is again.
46:49Watch this very carefully.
46:50And that I would say Frank was middle and leg stump.
46:53Yes, and he was so far back, wasn't he?
46:55And look how far back he's gone on his stumps.
46:57Right the way back within about a foot of his middle and leg stump.
47:01But here's Underwood Bowling for the first time.
47:03Greg Chappell batting.
47:06And a beautiful shot from Chappell.
47:08Magnificent hit.
47:09Well, that was a question of absolute batting perfection.
47:13The way he hit that.
47:14He placed it perfectly.
47:16The timing was there.
47:17And the fieldsman who had no more than three or four metres to move.
47:21Couldn't get to it.
47:27And he's hit that hard and high.
47:29It's going up towards the boundary.
47:31It's a chase out there.
47:32The ball I think will win.
47:33And over the top for four.
47:35That's the most adventurous stroke might play today.
47:44And placed very well by Greg Chappell.
47:46Up towards the boundary it goes.
47:48It won't be four.
47:49They've taken two.
47:50And I think they're going for the third.
47:52Here it goes to the bowler's end.
47:58Greg Chappell is 37.
48:00Red power 20.
48:01Australia two for 66.
48:04Australia before lunch had had 24 overs sent down to them.
48:07And scored 68 runs.
48:09And this works out at 2.8 per over.
48:12That's Australia have got to quicken up their scoring rate.
48:14And Willis is to bowl to Greg Chappell.
48:17And immediately runs through point.
48:19It's a chase for Underwood.
48:21A drive off a thick outside edge.
48:23But a fairly good stroke.
48:25England's tactics at the moment is to stop the Australian scoring.
48:29Hoping that they will try to force the place and the pace.
48:32And make a mistake.
48:35But there's a good stroke by Greg Chappell.
48:37Through mid-wicket.
48:37A chase for Lloyd.
48:41The batsman has slowed down as Lloyd's return comes back.
48:44And a good one.
48:45Two to not.
48:46Two runs to Chappell.
48:48He's 45.
48:48And Australia two for 85.
48:50That's the partnership now.
48:52Is out of 80 runs for the third wicket.
48:58And that's in the air.
48:59And he dropped.
49:02And Frank Tyson yelling in anguish there.
49:06And I don't blame him.
49:07Dropped at mid-iron by the England captain, Doness.
49:17And there was another edge.
49:20There was no second slip.
49:21So it was not a chance.
49:24Four runs.
49:25And Greg Chappell has brought up his 50.
49:2851 to Greg Chappell.
49:29Australia two for 91.
49:35There's a great stroke.
49:41Four.
49:43Into the fence.
49:44On the full.
49:47England down to four bowlers.
49:49They've now shut the gate.
49:50But the horse has bolted.
49:51We see Greg at second slip.
49:54I think a better offside field now.
49:57As.
49:58Willis bowls to Greg Chappell.
50:02Driving straight.

50:11In the meanwhile.
50:12Greg Chappell comes back to the third.
50:15And Greg Chappell playing ominously well.
50:20He's 61.
50:28As we see.
50:29There's one of those gaps.

50:34He goes up to 35.
50:37Australia two for 106.
50:39The second wicket fell when the score was five.

50:47And that's back with Titmuss bowling to Greg Chappell on 61.
50:52And how is that one?
50:54He's out.

51:19And a deep backward square leg.
51:21And Redpath will get a run here.
51:24Underwood.
51:24Let's see if Redpath goes for two.
51:26There's danger that returns on the way.
51:27This could be close.
51:28Is he out?
51:29Yes he's out.
51:30Run out.
51:33The second run wasn't there.
51:35It wasn't a great return and not had to move a little bit.
51:39But Redpath has been run out.
51:42Here's the replay.
51:43Let's watch the replay first.
51:44Now Underwood has the ball as Redpath turns for the second run.

52:54And there's a lovely stroke through the covers.
52:57A long chase for old.
53:00Not to make it.
53:02And a very delighted Australian crowd applauding that lovely stroke by Walters.

53:56Walters waiting for the umpire's decision
53:58because he did have some doubt whether Dinesh had got there
