00:02A merger between the University of Canberra and Canberra Institute of Technology is not
00:07a new idea.
00:09We're now at a juncture where we need to make some difficult decisions.
00:13But the idea is back on the table.
00:15Perhaps it's now time for CIT and UC to talk about a joined up future together.
00:21Fifteen years after an ACT government review recommended a merger of the two and 24 hours
00:27after CIT's most recent CEO resigned.
00:30There have been problems with the stability of CIT.
00:34With a governance review into CIT ongoing, the ACT government say other options are being considered.
00:41We understand that current arrangements are not instilling confidence.
00:45I'm very grateful that the University of Canberra, in a moment of crisis as some would describe it,
00:51are stepping forward trying to be helpful.
00:53If you've got ongoing financial problems, something's got to give.
00:57The taxpayer can't be a tap that you just leave on constantly and we ignore the problems.
01:02UC says it's not a takeover, suggesting a dual sector university makes sense.
01:08We can actually offer cheaper education as a result because at the moment we duplicate everything.
01:14With the possibility of expanding the opportunities to more people.
01:18It's long overdue for a university to be south as well.
01:22All the unis in Canberra on the north side.
01:24We're not boldly going where no one's gone before,
01:26but what we are making sure is that the ACT, with its relatively small size,
01:30has a fighting chance to be a place that people want to come and study.
01:34A proposal that's still to be tested.
01:36is the only one that is not driven already.
01:36A country of three years of the government.
01:38If that's going to be done,
01:38then we want to build a job.
