Outdoor workers in the Top End have been staying extra hydrated through the sweltering period before wet season. Temperatures have only been half a degree hotter than average, but increased humidity and other conditions are making the heat worse, with the weather bureau saying there won’t be reprieve any time soon.

00:02There's little reprieve from the heat on a top-end construction site in the build-up.
00:08And these workers say this year has been particularly brutal.
00:12Got a lot hotter, yeah, sweating your guts out.
00:14We go through the Yeti water bottles, we're filling them up.
00:16There's four litres in one of those Yetis and we fill them up twice a day.
00:19The Bureau of Meteorology says although temperatures are only half a degree hotter than average,
00:25less wind, more humidity and the sun's position almost directly overhead
00:30are combining to make the build-up feel harsher than previous years.
00:34It does take it out here, goes through plenty of fluid.
00:36Had to upgrade the water bottle this year, a couple of extra litres in the Yowie.
00:41And even getting home after work you get sick of drinking water, that's for sure.
00:45And the bomb says there likely won't be a reprieve any time soon.
00:49It probably isn't going to get too much worse but we're going to see a continuation
00:52of these sorts of conditions for the next month or so.
00:56This year's El Niño is also likely to delay the monsoon.
01:00We're expecting it to be a little bit later than usual
01:02so we're probably into the new year when we expect that monsoon to arrive
01:07but we do get those storms coming through in the meantime.
01:09You get through these couple of months of hot
01:11and then the rest of the year up is great.
01:13Further south, the Bureau is forecasting more wet weather for central Australia
01:17following a number of weeks of intense storms and flooding.
01:21So as I'll see you next morning.
01:24All right.
01:24Thank you for getting back on the nearby lockdown.
