00:00All the string work is a little bit easier than on an actual cello.
00:05A lot of makeup actually because we kind of need that output gain to make it sound huge.
00:36What's up, this is David John from Unprocessed.
00:39We're here in Chicago tonight on the Angel North America tour.
00:44We're touring with our new album Angel right now and so far it's been an absolute blast.
00:50We've already been to Mexico and Canada and a lot of American cities and I think today
00:56is going to be a highlight.
00:57So we're super stoked and today I'm actually going to show you a little bit of the gear
01:03that I'm using on this tour, my basses and my electric cello and I hope you enjoy.
01:09So this is my main bass guitar.
01:13This is the SR Prestige.
01:16So these are the basically exact same basses that you will find as production models in
01:22Europe and US but this one is actually built in Japan.
01:25I think the wood and stuff is just a little bit more high value than the premium ones and
01:32just feels amazing.
01:34It's got these Nordstrand pickups in there as well and it's active and it doesn't have
01:39any like multi-scale implications.
01:41So this is just basically a regular SR bass with no fan frets or whatever.
01:48So pretty conventional in a way but it does the job absolutely perfect.
01:52The playability is amazing.
01:54And I think it's my favorite bass I've played on tour so far.
01:57I always have my EQ everything all the way up.
02:01So those mids and highs are just all the way up.
02:04Same goes for the volume.
02:06Then for the pickups I like to switch between this third and first position.
02:13This one is for the more thumpy parts and this is when I play with pick but honestly sometimes
02:18I forget it.
02:19So I pretty much just maxed everything out and got this pickup selector here in the middle.
02:28So I got both of them active all the time.
02:31So for strings I used D'Addario strings regular 45 to 135 string set and my bass is usually
02:43tuned one half step down.
02:47So E-flat standard if you want to put it that way.
02:51And then everything else as for the tuning comes from the quad cortex so it will like pitch
02:56shift around my bass depending on the song.
03:00So but it would either be plus two, plus one, minus one or zero so no big jumps or whatever.
03:07So yeah I'm actually playing pretty much in a standard bass tuning most of the time.
03:13There is no weird octave down thing even though we do it sometimes in the studio.
03:18But for life yeah I'm mostly on the same octave as the 8 string guitars.
03:22So the second bass is actually just pretty much the same one.
03:29And I only have it as a backup bass.
03:33As you can see it's been toured heavily last summer already and it's gotten some like visual
03:39damage.
03:40Maybe I should open my own vintage shop or whatever.
03:45But yeah this is literally just the same bass in another finish also not strain pickups.
03:49And yeah I absolutely adore this finish on off this bass as well but it's just sitting
03:54in the case just in case I need a backup and string breaks or something like that.
04:00So I just I actually do enjoy just playing one instrument for the whole show so nothing
04:05ever changes.
04:07The feeling is always the same and if something happens it will still be the same.
04:10And so that's kind of the dream setup for me.
04:13So on this tour I brought something really special which is this electric cello by Gear
04:214 Music.
04:22It's the Sonos Azure Blue finish one.
04:28They have like some different finishes as well.
04:31But yeah so it's Gear 4 Music House brand.
04:36So it comes actually on a very good budget which I think is great.
04:40So everybody that is looking for an affordable electric cello this is definitely worth a shot.
04:46I just used this for the song Dark Sun and Complete.
04:50Which I initially recorded a whole string section with an actual cello like with an acoustic cello.
04:57now but you know it's pretty pretty tough to bring these things on tour because it's hard
05:01to mic them up and it's hard to transport them without damaging them and stuff.
05:07So electric cello was the shot you just got.
05:09It's basically you can imagine it like an electric guitar.
05:12So I think you got your pickup sitting behind this here even though I haven't seen it yet
05:16but I think it sits in here.
05:19And you've got your active like battery you've got an EQ and you just have your instrument plug
05:24just with any guitar.
05:27So yeah you can just like switch it on right here.
05:31And yeah so basically you can handle it like an electric guitar or bass but with the thing
05:38that you actually string it or pluck it or whatever you want to do with it.
05:43And yeah then of course I've got my bow right here.
05:49which is a regular cello bow so there's no different bow for it or something like that.
05:56So yeah and I play it actually standing up so there's like a metal thing that comes in here
06:01and then I play it standing up and that's the electric cello for you.
06:06It's a regular cello tuning so it's actually in fifths which is weird for me as a bass player
06:12because that's enforced so we got C G D A so if you hear me tuning it will sound like
06:20any
06:21like orchestra guy tuning or something like that but the cool thing is that the actual
06:25tuning lockers are just as on my bass.
06:29So all the string work is a little bit easier than on an actual cello because in an actual
06:36cello you have like something that's I don't even know what's it called in English it's called
06:41Stimmblok in German it's like sitting in there and taking care of the tension in the strings
06:46and stuff like that for this one it's pretty straightforward so you can take this guy actually
06:50out for the transport which I do when I know the road is bumpy or when we get on a
06:56plane
06:56or something like that so it cannot break.
06:59So yeah that's all pretty way easier than with an actual cello.
07:02So actually right now only the A string is also a D'Addario set like a regular cello set
07:10by them and the rest is still the original strings but the top one broke already so I had to
07:17get
07:17a set I came super unprepared to be honest but yeah I didn't even know that D'Addario does them
07:22too so I'm gonna hit my guys up and be like hey now I'm playing cello too.
07:26Alright so this is my quad cortex one of three as you can see I'm the lowest in the unit
07:33and I mean
07:34what we have here is basically first in the chain is a noise gate pretty straightforward so we don't
07:40get any like intrusive noises in there then we got the pitch shift so in this case it's minus one
07:48so
07:48that means probably the song I'm about to play is in D minor because I'm in E flat standard.
07:56Then we got the micro aggressor which is neural capture of a dark glass pedal I started out playing
08:03dark glass pedals back in the day so having this implemented here is just it's just perfect it's
08:08what you want what's for the genre basically and then we got this crazy EQ going on with a lot
08:15of the
08:15high scooped as you can see and like a lot of a lot of stuff just to avoid like nerve
08:22-breaking frequencies
08:26and then some compression pretty straightforward a lot of makeup actually because we kind of need
08:33that output gain to make it sound huge and then we got in parallel another gate after all the like
08:43distortion and stuff so it doesn't add up all right so for my in-ears I also got two times
08:50basically the
08:51same thing in another color so that's what I like to do so I've got these RH acoustics custom in
08:58-ears RH2
09:00and yeah I've been working with the brand just for a couple of months but I'm super super happy with
09:06them before that I always had a little bit of struggle with in-ears breaking because I'm like
09:11performing super heavily on stage doing weird movements so I broke so many pairs of in-ears but
09:18these so far like I played maybe around 40 or 45 shows with them by now and yeah they are
09:25amazing
09:25as you can see they aren't like made of some malleable um stuff it's like uh hard shell things
09:35which I was skeptical about at first because I thought maybe they wouldn't adjust as well to my ears
09:40but it's not the case at all and best in-ears I had so far they even have my signature
09:45on them
09:46and the unprocessed logo right here and yeah go check out RH picks we have our custom picks right here
09:54which we ordered uh I'm actually not sure from which side but they have like the that rose thing on
10:01them
10:02and we got another one with our logo and our lettering and these are one millimeter so pretty
10:08standard guitar pick I'm not a big fan of bass picks or whatever oversized things uh bass players like
10:14to play this for me is just perfect yeah thank you guys so much for checking out my gear um
10:20I hope to
10:21see as many of you as possible on this tour and if not check out our record angel uh it's
10:26out there now
10:27and I think it's our best one yet so go listen to it on your headphones or on the train
10:32or wherever you like
11:03and I think it's our best one yet so go listen to it on your headphones or on the train
11:06or on the train or on the train or on the train or on the train
