00:02Good evening, hello and welcome. You're with the news today, your primetime destination news,
00:07newsmakers, talking point, news without the noise. This Tuesday night, our big story.
00:12As Uday Needy's talent finds himself in the eye of a storm, are women's soft targets for male
00:18politicians? His sexist remarks have put him in that eye of the storm. Is his arrest though
00:24overreach or justified? Among my other guests, Khushpu Sundar will join me on that Uday Needy
00:31story that's exploding in Tamil Nadu. But the big story that we are breaking at the moment,
00:38the Tamil Nadu leader of the opposition and DMK leader Uday Needy's talent has just been released
00:43by the Tamil Nadu police after a day of high drama. Uday Needy was held earlier today for
00:50making a crass, obscene remark against the actor Trisha, a friend of Chief Minister Vijay.
00:58Uday Needy has been allowed out on bail after the high court intervened and after questioning by the
01:05police. A big show of strength meanwhile is going on in Sengipatti, in Tanjabur, in Tamil Nadu by the
01:12supporters of Uday Needy. He's been taken out on that carcade as you can see by his supporters.
01:18They're cheering him after his release. But all of this is leaving several questions at the moment.
01:25I want to go straight to the man on the spot. Pramod Madhav joined me. Pramod, high drama,
01:31Uday Needy detained from his house, then taken to Tanjabur, reportedly arrested. Now the police
01:37releasing him on bail and now there's this huge show of strength. Tell us what is happening at the
01:43moment there in Tanjabur after this day of high drama when he was arrested for allegedly making
01:49obscene remarks against the actor Trisha.
01:56The actual high drama initiated around 9 a.m. in the morning as police reached his squad,
02:01reached his resident, that too. Tanjabur police all the way from here, nearly 400 kilometers away
02:06from Chennai, they reached Uday Needy Stalin, the leader of the opposition, after a complaint
02:10was filed yesterday. Immediately an FAR was filed and of which the nine sections, two sections
02:14were non-bailable offenses. That is why earlier plans were there that Uday Needy Stalin was detained,
02:19immediately to be taken to Tanjabur. After interrogation, there were high possibility
02:24of his arrest. However, DMK immediately called it as a ploy just to make sure that Uday Needy
02:29Stalin would be stopped from entering assembly tomorrow where he had the budget session.
02:33Certain things kind of happened between 12 p.m. and 15 p.m. where the Damanadu police
02:38went ahead and said that they did not have any intention to arrest Uday Needy Stalin even though
02:42they decided to bring him all the way from Chennai to Tanjabur and then later they said he
02:46will be released on station bail. However, even that plan completely changed as the 22 kilometers
02:51before Tanjabur, within Tanjabur itself, instead of going to south Tanjabur police station, they
02:56took him to Sengipati and there after two hours of interrogation Uday Needy Stalin has been released
03:01on station bail and we are actually chasing him right now. He's on his way to the airport.
03:05We've been told that he will be reaching Chennai by 10.30. That is his tentative plan right now.
03:10Once he reaches Trichy airport, which is almost 10 kilometers from our spot, Rajseep. And then all
03:15plans are set to continue this particular battleground back in Chennai's Tamil Nadu assembly
03:19tomorrow, Rajseep.
03:21Okay, there is Prabhul Bhada with the very latest. Now let's put all that's happened today in context.
03:27The Tamil Nadu leader of the opposition, Uday Needy Stalin, was arrested today after a complaint
03:32was filed by a ruling TVK government member, accusing Stalin of making misogynistic remarks
03:39against actor Trisha, who is known to be close to Chief Minister Vijay. Let's take a look
03:45at how this drama unfolded and the kind of controversy Uday Needy Stalin finds himself once again in.
03:53Thank you very much.
04:36Udayaniti Stalin's remark allegedly loaded with sexual innuendo targeting actor Trishakrishna
04:42who is close to Chief Minister Joseph Vijay may have opened a new chapter in Tamil Nadu
04:49politics within hours of the statement by the leader of the opposition at a protest rally in
04:53Tanjabur an FIR was filed Tuesday morning the police came knocking on Udayaniti's doors
05:10the police who had reached the DMK leader's residence in Chennai armed with a warrant was
05:14stopped by his wife Kiryatika Udayaniti and party leader Maso Brahanyam
05:18the police are not allowed to do that
05:20we cannot afford to do that
05:22we are not allowed to do that
05:24this is law violation
05:25no violation
05:29no violation
05:30no violation
05:31no violation
05:36no violation
05:38no violation
05:41no violation
06:06After a brief while, the police got access to Udayanidhi.
06:12He was led away in the police vehicle.
06:34Udayanidhi denied making any comment on Trisha and accused Vijay of vendetta politics.
06:39First, did you say something wrong yesterday?
06:42You decide, you decide.
06:44You saw the speech.
06:45Did I say something wrong?
06:47Did I say anybody's name except the CM's name?
06:51Why do you think this is happening?
06:52This is just revengeful.
07:00The arrest sparked DMK protests in multiple cities.
07:07Vijay's effigies were burnt.
07:10The TVK retaliated with counter-protests.
07:15Once again, it's a wake-up call for all Tamil Nadu people, that, you know, the complete
07:21part of the people who have ordered for DMK, and it's again, once again, it's a wake-up call
07:25that those people who just want to begin and think once again after this five years of...
07:32The DMK rushed to Madras High Court to secure bail for Udayanidhi, where the government informed
07:38the court that the leader of opposition would not be sent to jail.
07:41The High Court directed the police to release Udayanidhi after questioning.
07:46Dramatic 24 hours that saw a sexist jive and arrest and statewide protests could mark the start
07:51of a bitter war in Tamil Nadu's politics.
07:56The fight between Vijay and Udayanidhi is now more than just political, it just got personal.
08:02With Pramod Madhav and Anagar Keshav, we have a report, India Today.
08:11So let's raise some big questions.
08:13Women soft targets for male politicians?
08:16Or is Udayanidhi's arrest an overreach or justified?
08:20Is this vendetta politics at one level in Tamil Nadu?
08:23That first question of whether women are soft targets.
08:26I want to go straight to Kushpu Sundar joins me, politician, actor, former member of the
08:32National Commission of Women.
08:33Kushpu Sundar, good to have you on the show.
08:35When you first saw the remarks that Udayanidhi's talent had passed against Trisha, the oblique
08:41references to Trisha, the double entendre, how did you see it?
08:46What was your first response to what you heard and saw what Udayanidhi's talent had done?
08:56It was repulsive, it made me angry, it was very crude, crass, leader of opposition and
09:03the former deputy CM cannot come up with these kind of statements on a public platform or
09:08anywhere for that matter.
09:09I think a man, when he is referring to a woman, I think he has to be doubly guarded as
09:14to what he says.
09:17You know, you are saying that these remarks were repulsive, but do you believe that repulsive
09:21remarks justified his detention and arrest or was that overreach and vendetta politics
09:27on the part of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu?
09:30Because Udayanidhi referred to Trisha in the way that he had, does it give the right to
09:35the Chief Ministers or his supporters to decide Udayanidhi must be detained and arrested
09:40without due process?
09:44So is Udayanidhi and his team trying to say that they can refer to women as and when they
09:49want to, in the most derogatory, in the most abusive language, use the most filthiest way
09:55to describe a woman and get away with it because they have been doing so all these years?
10:00Is this what they, whatever they have given to the people never stood up for women?
10:03We have seen the kind of atrocities that have happened in the five years of DMK regime.
10:07They expect the same in somebody else's regime too.
10:10They said Vijay is governing the state, so let it pass because we men have the birth
10:15right to abuse a woman as and when we wish.
10:18Is that what Udayanidhi's team is trying to say?
10:21You know, but as someone who's been in public life for a long time, are women a soft target
10:29in general?
10:29In Tamil Nadu, perhaps in India and the rest of the world, a woman who enters public life
10:34or is seen in the company of a chief minister immediately becomes a soft target?
10:41Yes, of course, women have always been the soft target.
10:44Men feel that it is their birthright to abuse women and especially if she is a celebrity
10:50and if she happens to be an actor, then more so because they think that women who are in
10:57cinema are public properties, not public figures.
11:00So they think being a public property can use and misuse her the way I want to because
11:05she is not supposed to open her mouth and react to it because I pay for your movie and
11:10I go to the theater, which agreed.
11:12But that does not mean that I am a public property.
11:16I deserve and I demand more respect than you as a nominee who you are the follower or who
11:24actually go and clap and whistle at the same time when you watch my films, dance to my tunes.
11:30I demand and I should be commanding more respect than you do.
11:34Women, especially in cinema, are not public properties to be abused and used, but they are
11:41public figures who demand and they should command the same amount of respect as the women from
11:47your family you think should get.
11:51Now, you've been in politics for a long time.
11:53You've been with different parties, with DMK, Congress, now with the BJP.
11:58Have you faced similar sexual comments, innuendos?
12:01Have you been targeted as a woman?
12:07Yes, when I was in Congress, I was at a Congress rally in Bangalore and one of the party members
12:14tried to fill me up on my waist and I had to turn around and slap.
12:18It's there on all the medias.
12:21I'm sure it's still there because I turned around and slapped because whoever it might
12:24be, I'm not going to take nonsense from any man who's out there.
12:27When I was in DMK, I was part of DMK and how the own party members harassed me, they pulled
12:34my saree, they pulled my hair, they threw slippers at me because I had the courage to
12:39say that the general body is going to decide as to who the next leader will be of the DMK.
12:45And I was voicing the same message what the then DMK leader, Dr. Kalinger, had said.
12:51And I was still slippered.
12:53And then we had the same DMK leaders being mute spectators and just nodding their head
12:58because their leader, the so-called then would-be leader was somebody they thought can get
13:05away with it.
13:06No, so I want to ask you then, you've given us how you, what happened to you.
13:10If you were in Trisha's place today, what would you do now?
13:13How would you respond?
13:18I would turn around and ask Mr. Udainidi Stalin if he would like to comment on the same
13:23thing, had he been in a different party about his women.
13:28You know, but I also must ask you this, you're now with the BJP.
13:32You will recall that when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was a chief minister and campaigning for
13:37his 2014 election, he referred to Shashi Tharoor's wife, Sunanda, as a 50 crore girlfriend
13:43without naming her.
13:44You know, so it's not as if Udainidi Stalin is the first such politician to use derogatory
13:50language against women.
13:51When Prime Minister Modi, at that time chief minister Gujarat could call Shashi Tharoor's
13:55wife, 50 crore girlfriend, isn't that problematic for you?
14:02Across political, then I remember condemning the Prime Minister, not because I was in Congress,
14:08but because I was a woman.
14:09Anything which is about a woman, I think every man should actually look into it and understand
14:15that you cannot degrade a woman as per your whims and fancies.
14:21A woman commands more respect than a man because, or at least when you talk about being an equal,
14:27equality is the word we keep using, equality.
14:31Where is the equality?
14:32Where is the equality we are talking about?
14:33A woman has degraded, she is abused, she is used, she is raped, she has been taken,
14:39any which way you look at it, it's there.
14:42I'm glad though, I'm glad you're at least admitting it's across parties.
14:46So whether it's a Prime Minister or a leader of the opposition, they cannot target women
14:52in this manner.
14:54You've seen the kind of also abusive language, Khushpu Sundar, that many IT right-wing trolls
15:00in particular use against women on social media, women in public life.
15:05So it's not as if, you know, we are referring today to Uday Needy, no one is excusing his
15:09behavior at all.
15:11But when you were in the Congress, they used to attack you, these IT cells.
15:15So the fact is, there are lots of people out there using abusive, derogatory language
15:20against women, cutting across parties and ideologies.
15:23It's not just what's happening with the DMK.
15:26Do you accept that or not?
15:29We need to stop that and I'm glad that Vijay had taken a step by taking Mr. Uday Needy
15:34Stalin in custody because I think if you allow a man, we have been too forgiving.
15:44People will forget about it tomorrow.
15:46But why is it always about women where we have to say that, aray, jane dhena, chhod dhena?
15:51Why?
15:52So in conclusion, you could...
15:55When I had spoken that the general body meeting will decide as to who the next leader of DMK
16:04will be, it was about a man and I, my house was stoned, I was slippered, my pallu was pulled.
16:10If it was about women, they are not bothered.
16:13It's okay.
16:15Why make a big deal about it?
16:17Why is it when it comes about men, it has to be a big hoha and shosha about it?
16:22Because he's your leader?
16:23No.
16:24I think every woman, if we are in public life, if we are a celebrity, does not mean that
16:29it gives you the right to abuse us.
16:34Across the political line, across the political line, I think this should be a message, very
16:40clear message that you will be held accountable if you abuse a woman.
16:45You know, I'm glad you're saying all of this.
16:47I will therefore ask you in conclusion.
16:49I asked you what would you have done if you were in Trisha's place?
16:52What would you do if you were in Uday Nidi's talent's place?
16:55Would you ask him to give above all else an apology right away today because he hasn't
17:00given one yet?
17:04That's the first thing I said in the morning.
17:06That's the first thing I did in the morning when there are two guys from DMK who actually
17:11spoke very equally foul language in a very derogatory manner.
17:16They spoke about me.
17:17Cases were filed against them.
17:19They were pulled to NCW and they were asked to apologize.
17:23And then the same Mr. M.K.
17:25Stalin, he was in power.
17:26He suspended one of these speakers for three months.
17:30Then they took him back because they need men like them to abuse women on a social platform
17:34or on a larger public platform.
17:37So if he can be suspended, why is it Uday Nidi continues as a leader of opposition?
17:42Why is he not suspended?
17:45Okay, I take your point.
17:47So, why is it going to be angry?
17:48Why is it going to be angry and legitimately so in this case?
17:51I appreciate you joining us and being rather candid with me.
17:54Okay, we've heard from her.
17:56Let's now listen in to the DMK.
17:57Joining me now is the Lok Sabha MP of the DMK.
18:00Dr. Kalanidi Veera Swami joins me.
18:02We appreciate you joining us, Dr. Veera Swami.
18:05Would you concede that your leader Uday Nidi's talent today stepped out of line by using those
18:10kind of remarks that clearly will be seen as misogynist, sexist and directed at Trisha
18:15and her alleged relationship with Chief Minister Vijay?
18:18Would you accept that he was out of line in using language, spawning, scorned, ridiculed,
18:24obscene remarks on Trisha?
18:29Good evening and thank you for having me in this show.
18:33Like you said, I don't know if you speak Tamil and if you have heard a speech.
18:37In fact, he has never mentioned her name.
18:41I mean, he has never mentioned the name Trisha at all.
18:43No, no, no.
18:44Sir, sir, sir, sir, one minute.
18:45I got my correspondent to translate the Tamil in me.
18:49Yes, he doesn't mention the word Trisha, but the implication is very clear.
18:53Sir, he's referring to Trisha when he makes all those sexually suggestive remarks and has
18:59a smirk on his face.
19:03No, I mean, like he has made it very clear when he made a statement also, he said, I am
19:09talking about the Cauvery water.
19:10So this is this is one thing where it is if you if you see the total speech, you will
19:16understand
19:16that he says that I'm talking about the Cauvery water and also like, OK, even if I give it
19:21say that it was a different defaming speech.
19:24Do you think the way in which he was handled is they could have filed a case in court and
19:29they could have allowed a judge to come to a decision about whether the speech was defamatory
19:34or the modesty of a woman has been affected or whatever.
19:40But they chose to arrest him only because tomorrow we have our budget session in Tamil Nadu and
19:47they wanted to ensure that the leader of the opposition party of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Udain
19:50Lee Stalin, because they have given so much of promises, which in this last 80 days of
19:55their government, they have not addressed any of those issues.
19:57And they had even said that the farm waivers will be given to all the farmers.
20:01Now they have come out with some other formula where the farmers are unhappy and there is
20:06so much of dissent in Tamil Nadu that they want to ensure that taking the attention totally
20:12away from the budget session and making Udain Lee Stalin.
20:14No, no, Dr. Veela Swami, there are two separate issues here.
20:18One is the action that the Vijay government has taken and we can debate and criticize that
20:22as an overreach.
20:23But the sexually suggestive references to the chief minister Vijay's friendship with Trisha made
20:29from a public forum with the crowd cheering.
20:32Is that something you will do except that that should not have been said by Udain Lee
20:37Stalin?
20:38Yes or no, sir?
20:40No, when I listen to that, I go by what he said that I am talking about Gaveri water.
20:45See, it's an interpretation which each and everyone can say.
20:48And there have been much worse things which BJP leaders have spoken about where none of
20:53those comments were criticized or action being taken.
20:59The BJP state leader had made open references to naming her.
21:05So when you are talking about this, where here we are seeing a situation where her name
21:10was not at all mentioned by him.
21:11And he is clarifying, saying that I am talking about the Kaveri water where we want water.
21:17Sir, you know, he says, I mean, I was referring to Kaveri waters, even as the audience is responding
21:24with loud applause because I have checked with all our Tamil correspondents.
21:28The fact is that this is double entendre.
21:31And they start chanting the name of Trisha, who seen, I repeat, as a close friend of Vijay.
21:36It's apparent that there was an attempt being made to create a sexually suggestive remark.
21:42So the focus should have been only on the Kaveri waters.
21:46Why at all bring in the chief minister and his relationship with Trisha in this first instance?
21:53That's his private life.
21:55No, if you listen to the speech, the full speech lasts for anything between 15 to 20 minutes.
22:00And this particular reference that you are talking about lasts only for maybe about five seconds or so.
22:07Sir, whether it lasts, Dr. Veera Swami, whether it is five seconds or two seconds,
22:11you will agree that vulgar double entendre against women should have no place in public life?
22:17No, if a clarification has to be sought, you should seek it from Ms. Ruday Nadi Stalin.
22:24Because if he says that he has done it and if he wants to accept it, he has made it
22:30very clear.
22:31Even during his speech, I am talking about the Kaveri water.
22:34So when he has made that clarity as he was speaking, I see no reason to say that, I mean,
22:39like he has defamed and to arrest him in a huff and puff.
22:43And to kind of, I feel that the whole thing is being done to divert the attention away from the
22:49budget where a lot of questions are going to be asked by people who are angry in Tamil Nadu.
22:55Sir, this is not the first time though that your leader Uday Nadi has got into trouble for making these
23:00kind of remarks, off-the-cuff remarks.
23:02You will recall the Sanatan Dharma controversy, where he made remarks that virtually likening it to mosquitoes.
23:10Now comes this controversy and the critics will therefore, you know, wonder, does all this not put Uday Nadi on
23:17the black foot
23:17and lead questions over his claims to become a future leader if he keeps making these outrageous remarks?
23:26No, see, in fact, this action of this Vijay government has, in fact, in Tamil Nadu, has given a new
23:34image for our leader
23:35where he has been seen as a person who is now a national leader.
23:39That is the extent to which they have pushed our leader.
23:41And another thing about Sanatan Dharma, you were saying about that.
23:45Do you know what specifically he was talking about?
23:48He was talking about the people being differentiated on caste basis and women being oppressed.
23:54These are the things which we want removed.
23:56So, this is something which we have made it very clear about that.
24:00And even that Sanatan Dharma, he has issued a clarification saying, we are against these things in Sanatan Dharma.
24:05Sanatan Dharma, if you read books of Manus Mithi, there are a lot of good things.
24:10But there are also a lot of criticizable things.
24:13Sir, you are saying that all of this has made your leader into a national figure?
24:17Does someone need to become with due regard, sir, a national leader by getting into these kind of controversies,
24:23by targeting women and using lines which will provoke outrage targeting a woman who cannot hit back right away?
24:32I ask you again, is this part of the DMK's political culture in a way?
24:36Will this not be seen?
24:37Is this what the culture you want to promote anti-woman?
24:41No, it is not.
24:44So, that is why I am giving a clarification saying, if there is any intent of having used it in
24:50a double meaning,
24:51the clarification should come from Mr. Mithi.
24:53Because if you ask me, I will say that he did not mean it in that way.
24:56So, it is not for us to decide.
24:59You know that the matter has gone to the court.
25:01They could have allowed the court to investigate.
25:04And then, if they find that it was double meaning, then the court is going to take action appropriately.
25:10So, sir, let me ask you in conclusion.
25:12Should your leader be giving an unconditional apology or not?
25:15That if in any way I have hurt anyone's feelings, including Trisha, I apologize.
25:19Why can he not do that?
25:20That will be a sign of a true leader.
25:23Apologize.
25:25No, I personally, it is my personal opinion, that if somebody has been hurt by anything, whatever he has said,
25:32that an apology would definitely be helpful.
25:35But it is for Mr. Udayanidhi to decide whether he had that intent of when he was speaking
25:41and whether he wants to apologize is a decision which he has to take.
25:46Okay, so we have heard.
25:47Thank you very much, Dr. Veera Swami.
25:49I have heard from you.
25:49I have heard the DMK viewpoint.
25:51I have heard Kushpu.
25:52I just want a bit more to get the TVK viewpoint and that of civil society.
25:56Felix Gerald, TVK spokesperson with us.
25:59Shaleen Maria Lawrence is a social activist.
26:01Harish Mohamed Ibrahim, political analyst pro-DMK, I am told, also joins us.
26:06But I want to come to you, Felix, first.
26:09The feeling is that while the comments of Udayanidhi are unacceptable,
26:15the way in which the TVK government reacted is a classic example of overreach.
26:20You arrest someone without going through due process.
26:23The high court has also pulled you all up.
26:25Why did you need to do that?
26:26You will end up making Udayanidhi Stalin a martyr and a hero in the eyes of his supporters.
26:32Definitely no, sir.
26:34The procedure was followed meticulously.
26:37There was a complaint from a commoner.
26:42After getting the complaint, FAA was filed.
26:45After filing the FAA, Tajavur police station, police of Tajavur went to secure him.
26:52And we have also told in the court…
26:54Within 24 hours, within 24 hours, without even going through the bases,
26:58they could have gone, questioned him at his residence.
27:01The feeling is it was done because you all want to send out a message.
27:05This is vendetta politics that we can arrest Udayanidhi.
27:08There is no vendetta politics because for the basic reason that we have told in the court,
27:14we have come forward on our own without any pressure.
27:19They said our intention is to question.
27:22But they have made it as a bigger drama.
27:25They want to play it big.
27:26They want to blow it big.
27:28You have made it a drama by taking him to the police station all the way to Tajavur.
27:34What was the need to do that?
27:36Tajavur is the jurisdiction where he has to be inquired.
27:39Because that's the jurisdiction.
27:41The complaint was made.
27:42And that is a very basic rule in our judiciary.
27:47If a person is…
27:50If there is a complaint in a particular station,
27:52everybody will be taken…
27:53The accused person will be taken to the consent police station.
27:56So you believe these remarks needed an immediate arrest and detention.
28:00Am I correct?
28:01It is needed.
28:02But we are not intent to detain him.
28:07That is very…
28:07We have…
28:08Our advocate general in the court have very clearly said.
28:11But we want to give a very clear, loud and clear message.
28:16Let it be…
28:17It can be anybody.
28:18It can be a former chief minister.
28:20It can be a leader of opposition.
28:22But at the same time,
28:23if any derogatory statement,
28:25if they are made against women,
28:27they will be penalized.
28:29A proper police legal action will be taken.
28:32And number two,
28:33I was able to listen to some of the previous members,
28:37especially Kalani D. Virasamev,
28:39who is saying that there is no obscenity at all.
28:45But I want you to,
28:46as a senior journalist,
28:48you understand,
28:49you try to understand
28:54how he has respect for women in his heart,
28:58in his mind,
28:59how he looks at the society.
29:01It is not the first time for Uday Nidhi to make such a comment.
29:07He already,
29:08to insult Edebpa Dipaldi Swami,
29:10he insulted Sassikila.
29:12And the entire DMK,
29:15as a political party,
29:16they have a culture
29:17to pass derogatory statement against women.
29:21And they encourage…
29:23Let me stop you, Felix.
29:25Yes, sir.
29:26I have heard you.
29:27I have heard you.
29:28Shaleen,
29:29Maria Lawrence,
29:30you go along with that,
29:31that there is a culture
29:32of passing these kind of remarks against women?
29:35Yes, sir.
29:3770-year-old culture, sir.
29:38It's been there for 70 decades,
29:40seven decades.
29:41And DMK,
29:42see,
29:43I've done documented,
29:45I've done studies
29:46with various organizations
29:48from abroad
29:49on hate speech,
29:51on misogynist speech,
29:52on sexist speech on women.
29:54And according to me,
29:55from the time DMK was founded,
29:571949 until now,
29:59there has only been hate speech by,
30:00you know,
30:01DMK,
30:01obscene,
30:02vulgarist speeches by DMK.
30:04And,
30:05you know,
30:06putting aside all that.
30:08No,
30:08vulgarist speeches against women,
30:09vulgarist speeches against women,
30:11because women have been,
30:12were for a long time,
30:14before Jailalita came on the scene,
30:15a strong support base of the DMK.
30:18Yes, sir.
30:18Women and Dalits.
30:19For example,
30:20one of the founders of DMK,
30:22Satyawani Mutu,
30:23who was a stalwart,
30:25she was the first minister in Tamil Nadu.
30:28She was blasphemed,
30:31she was,
30:31you know,
30:32all vulgarities used against her,
30:34by her own party men,
30:35DMK men,
30:36because she was pro-Dalit.
30:38And she resigned from the party,
30:40stating,
30:40you know,
30:40they have,
30:41you know,
30:41they've been making fun of her blouse,
30:43they've been,
30:44you know,
30:44calling out the way she dresses,
30:46they called her a slut,
30:47they slut-shamed her,
30:48did everything to Satyawani Mutu.
30:50Then Satyawani Mutu joined ADMK,
30:52she became a union minister,
30:53that's another story.
30:54But starting from her,
30:55there has never been a woman leader in DMK,
30:58other than Kani Muri.
30:59There was a Subalashmi Jagadishan,
31:01one in 70 years.
31:03Other than that,
31:03there's been Kani Muri.
31:04And Kani Muri keeps quiet,
31:05because Kani Muri has been given a very respectable post,
31:09she takes care of the parliamentary functions,
31:11and,
31:12you know,
31:12she...
31:12No,
31:12but she speaks about women's empowerment,
31:14you're saying Kani Muri should speak out on an issue like this.
31:18Sir,
31:19Kani Muri is very clever,
31:20I have so much of respect on her,
31:22I've met her a couple of times,
31:23but she's very clever,
31:24when it happens in West Bengal,
31:25she talks,
31:26when it happens in UP,
31:28she talks.
31:28But as a Dalit activist,
31:29as a woman activist,
31:31when it happens in Tamil Nadu,
31:32when her own clan is getting involved in speeches like that,
31:36she doesn't condemn.
31:37In spite of,
31:38you know,
31:38what she does,
31:39she goes,
31:39and today she has condemned Vijay.
31:41She has said that Vijay is,
31:42you know,
31:43going ahead and conducting,
31:44a political vendetta,
31:45instead of condemning her nephew.
31:48She has not done that.
31:49So,
31:50there is so much of hypocrisy around DMK,
31:52when it comes to condemning things,
31:53like vulgarism.
31:55Because,
31:55how would I be in a party,
31:57then the whole,
31:58the language of the party is vulgarity,
32:00and obscene language.
32:01And Vijay Nevi is a habitual offender.
32:03So,
32:03as the Wheelie General said,
32:05not the first time.
32:06I will tell you the comment he made about,
32:09Edapati Pani Sami and Sissi Kila.
32:11He said,
32:11Edapati Pani Sami went inside the table,
32:14to touch Sissi Kila's feet,
32:16that he would have even gone between her feet,
32:20between her legs.
32:21This was the speech made by Udayaniti.
32:24Not one time,
32:25two times,
32:25ten times.
32:26Udayaniti about Jailalita.
32:27Udayaniti about Jailalita.
32:30Udayaniti about a lot of people.
32:32So,
32:32it is like,
32:32you know,
32:33it is a spoiled kid,
32:35Udayaniti is a spoiled kid,
32:36who has not been taught discipline,
32:39and,
32:39you know,
32:39proper things by DMK.
32:41The grandfather has been doing it,
32:42the father has been doing it,
32:44because I have a video.
32:45Yes.
32:46But,
32:46you know,
32:47I have a video.
32:48I heard you.
32:48Shaleen,
32:49Shaleen,
32:49I have heard you.
32:50I have heard you loud and clear.
32:52Harish Mohamed,
32:53you want to respond to what,
32:54this is a very strong speech,
32:56that Shaleen has just made,
32:57strong comments,
32:58that she has made,
32:59that this is part of a culture,
33:01that has been built up.
33:02Do you agree with that?
33:02And it's time to end it,
33:04and say enough is enough.
33:07Rajdeep,
33:08you have followed,
33:10the 70 year old history,
33:11and,
33:11if there is one party,
33:13which has stood,
33:14for people like Shaleen,
33:15to come forward,
33:16and speak like this,
33:17then it is the DMK,
33:18because of which,
33:19the entire Bravidian movement,
33:20and the self-respect movement,
33:22each and every one,
33:23is where we are right now.
33:25Now,
33:25that is.
33:26No,
33:26she has given examples.
33:28Harish,
33:28she has given hard examples,
33:30of the kind of language we use.
33:31Have some civility,
33:31have some civility,
33:33to be calm,
33:34when someone is speaking.
33:35No one has interrupted you,
33:37this is what we are on,
33:38to recommend you.
33:39Please,
33:40have some civility.
33:41And having said that,
33:43coming to the core issue here,
33:44if Mr. Udayladi Stalin,
33:46have said anything,
33:48which is concerning,
33:49to the women,
33:50who is in the discussion,
33:52as of now,
33:53we would be the first person,
33:54to condone it.
33:55But,
33:56whether there is any,
33:57kind of representation,
33:58has been given,
34:00there have been,
34:0022 minutes of speech,
34:02which is regarding,
34:03the Kaveri water,
34:04and the farmers district,
34:06and the entire,
34:06actions,
34:07which the TVK government,
34:09didn't,
34:09took for almost,
34:11for,
34:11So,
34:12why,
34:12so why bring,
34:13Trisha at all into it?
34:15So,
34:15why bring Trisha at all into it?
34:16Focus on the Kaveri.
34:18Raj,
34:19Raj,
34:19Raj,
34:19there are 10,000 people,
34:21that they've gathered,
34:22for a protest,
34:23and as a,
34:24part of the movement,
34:25there is a people,
34:26who have said,
34:27Trisha,
34:27and he made sure,
34:29not to call upon,
34:30Mr. Trisha or Vijay.
34:32You show,
34:33you put a clip,
34:34stating that,
34:35there is a word,
34:36which,
34:36whether any kind of,
34:37women name,
34:38comes from,
34:39Mr. Udayladi Stalin,
34:40we will,
34:40I am the first person,
34:41to condone that.
34:42But you have,
34:44certain insinuations,
34:45you have certain,
34:45interpretation,
34:46for each and every,
34:47interpretation,
34:48the law doesn't work,
34:49in that way.
34:50Okay.
34:50The law needs,
34:51the law needs,
34:52a clear prejudice,
34:54instead of prejudice,
34:55you need a clear,
34:56fabrication,
34:56with the proper events.
34:58Whether you have anything,
34:59to substantiate that,
35:01to all the so called,
35:02feminists,
35:03who are coming,
35:04on the shows,
35:05left,
35:06right and center,
35:07to just bombard,
35:08with a fake narrative,
35:10set up by the root mafia,
35:11to go ahead,
35:12and bring down,
35:13the DMK government,
35:15or the DMK,
35:16then it won't,
35:16let's not get into mafia.
35:19I know,
35:19at the end of the day,
35:21no no sir,
35:21those are the things Rajdeep.
35:22So no no,
35:23let's not put,
35:24baseless conspiracy theories,
35:26about mafia,
35:26nobody,
35:27but no no,
35:28I,
35:28I,
35:29I,
35:29I,
35:30I accept that,
35:31Uday Nidhi did not use,
35:32the words,
35:33Trisha,
35:34but there was clearly,
35:35sexually suggestive,
35:36remarks that were made.
35:38Felix Gerald,
35:39I will ask you,
35:40therefore in conclusion,
35:41I mean,
35:42I,
35:42you seem to have,
35:44there seems to be a,
35:45whether you agree with it or not,
35:47Vijay seems,
35:48versus Uday Nidhi,
35:49is going back to now,
35:50Karnanidhi versus Jailalita,
35:52and that's not what Tamil Nadu leads,
35:54let the leader of the opposition function,
35:56there seems to be,
35:57ever since Vijay has come in,
35:59he is determined to settle scores,
36:01is that what a chief minister should do,
36:03he is supposed to be a new face,
36:04he is practicing old vendetta politics.
36:08There is not even a single inch of vendetta,
36:11this is a new government,
36:13we want to settle,
36:14set an example,
36:15and all these 70 years,
36:17there is enough,
36:18of abusing women in public places,
36:21and they are not public property,
36:22as Mrs. Kushful Suda said,
36:24they are public figure,
36:25give them respect,
36:27and today,
36:28the society have changed,
36:29politicians have not changed,
36:31okay,
36:32this is a message,
36:33you can be anybody,
36:34but mind your words,
36:36when you,
36:37in the public,
36:38especially when you address women,
36:40I will take that as a point,
36:43I cannot disagree with that,
36:45mind your words,
36:46when you are talking about women,
36:47in public life,
36:48thank you all very much,
36:49to my guests for joining me,
36:50my take here,
36:52women have been soft targets,
36:54let me repeat that,
36:55women have been soft targets,
36:57in Indian politics,
36:58for far too long,
36:59from Prime Minister Modi's 50 crore,
37:02girlfriend Jaibad Shashi Tharu's wife,
37:04to Sanjay Nirupam's,
37:06naachne wali slur,
37:07against Smriti Hirani,
37:08to an Uday Nidhi's,
37:09talent sexually suggestive remarks,
37:12the pattern is depressingly familiar,
37:13and there are many instances,
37:15there is outrage for a few days,
37:17followed by silence,
37:18no real accountability,
37:20yes the Vijay government's,
37:21hasty arrest of Uday Nidhi,
37:23without due process,
37:24was an abuse of power,
37:26but that should not distract,
37:27from the central issue,
37:28his remarks were unacceptable,
37:30deserved widespread condemnation,
37:32political leaders,
37:33occupy positions of public trust,
37:36their words shape public discourse,
37:38and set the tone,
37:39for civic behaviour,
37:40there is simply no space,
37:42for sexist,
37:43sexually loaded,
37:44or demeaning comments,
37:45in democratic politics,
37:47public debate,
37:48must be elevated,
37:49by those in leadership,
37:50not dragged,
37:51into the gutter,
37:53Uday Nidhi's talent,
37:54needs a wake up call,
37:55okay,
37:57let's from there,
37:58turn to what's been happening,
37:59in parliament today,
38:01where once again,
38:02Amit Shah,
38:03was the focus,
38:04of the opposition's ire,
38:06they are,
38:07insisting,
38:08that Amit Shah,
38:09the home minister,
38:10come to address parliament,
38:12on the crackdown,
38:13on the July 20th,
38:14march in Delhi,
38:15the Samajwadi party,
38:16also raising,
38:17the Ayodhya Mandir,
38:18donation Rao,
38:19demanding a statement,
38:21by Prime Minister,
38:22Narendra Modi,
38:23the government,
38:23hitting back,
38:24accusing the opposition,
38:25of initially opposing,
38:27the mandir's,
38:28construction,
38:29but the question remains,
38:30where is,
38:31the home minister,
38:32listen in,
38:32and the
38:42house,
38:42and the
38:43land,
38:45and the
38:46and the
38:46land,
38:55foreign
38:57foreign
39:25the government and the government and the government has more than 70 acres of
39:52Thank you very much.
39:57We must not be able to reject our own laws and a whole.
40:11We must not be able to reject our own laws.
40:14We must not be able to reject our own laws.
40:40Let me turn from there to our ground report today, which is coming from Jarkhand, where
40:45the Jarkhand students' protest against examination irregularities in the state has entered day
40:5111.
40:51The hunger strike of the students is growing.
40:54There are more groups joining in.
40:55An assembly gherao has been announced and the agitation is only getting stronger.
41:00But alongside the students' demands, another demand debate is now gathering steam.
41:06Is politics deciding who gets support and who gets silence?
41:10Will those who opposed Dharmendra Pradhan also question the Jarkhand government?
41:16Here's a report.
41:29The Jarkhand students' movement isn't slowing down.
41:32It's only getting bigger.
41:34The protest over alleged recruitment scams has now entered day 11, with Ranchi's Jaipal
41:39Singh Munda Stadium fast becoming the state's own Jantar Mantar.
41:43Students continue to demand a CBI probe into alleged irregularities in Public Service Commission
41:50and Staff Selection Commission recruitments, fresh examinations and action against those
41:55behind the alleged paper leaks.
42:22They are all due to the
42:37The government is considering a high-level committee, but protesters say they don't trust a CID probe.
42:44The agitation is also intensifying.
42:47One protest tent continues to be led by student leader Devendranath Mahato,
42:52who remains on an indefinite hunger strike.
42:55A second tent has now begun its own fast, with five more students joining the hunger strike.
43:03Food and supplies are pouring in from across Chharkhand as public support for the movement grows.
43:09The protesters have now announced their next course of action,
43:13an assembly gherao on August 10th, during the monsoon session,
43:18along with a march on Shibu Sorain's first death anniversary.
43:23Meanwhile, the BJP has sharpened its attack.
43:41Responding to the growing pressure, the government assured that they are working towards a solution.
44:1211 days in, the tents are multiplying.
44:15The crowds are swelling, and the agitation is gathering political heat.
44:20The question now isn't whether the movement is growing,
44:23but how long the government can afford to wait before responding.
44:28With Satyajit Kumar, Bureau Report, India Today.
44:35Let's turn from Jharkhand to what happened in Bihar,
44:38because a day after his upset win over BJP in their stronghold of Baakipur,
44:42newly elected Bihar MLA, Prashan Kishore spoke exclusively to India Today's Rohit Singh.
44:48He explained the main reason why he could topple the ruling party in their own citadel.

46:51This is an excerpt.
46:51This is an excerpt.
47:00Let's turn to tonight's Get Real India story, which comes from Kanpur.
47:04Just 20 days after a grand inauguration, the Kanpur-Laknau expressway is under scrutiny once again.
47:10A fifth repair on the 4,200 crore project has triggered a National Highway Authority of India probe,
47:18with three engineers being removed, a technical team investigating why the damage keeps recurring.
47:24Meanwhile, questions will be asked.
47:27Simar Chawla reports.
47:40Fifth repair within 20 days of inauguration.
47:43That is the story of Kanpur-Laknau expressway opened in the presence of Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, and
47:53Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
47:55The 63-kilometre road was built under the supervision of the National Highway Authority of India.
48:03This is the surface area of the expressway.
48:06This is the actual road where the road is supposed to be, but there had been at least gap of
48:11six to seven inches where this surface area had in fact collapsed.
48:16And, you know, this is the situation of, I think, 300 to 400 metres of the stretch, because of which
48:23the road has been in fact prohibited to be used.
48:26The NHAI has ordered an inquiry. It has removed three engineers from duty.
48:34According to NHAI officials, the preliminary investigation shows slippage in the upper bituminous layer and the pavement.
48:43They claim the bridge's foundation, substructure and superstructure remain completely sound.
48:50A technical team is now investigating the root cause for the recurring damage.
48:56The six-lane expressway was built at a cost of approximately Rs. 4,200 crore.

49:11Well, let's turn from there to happier news.
49:13As Ganesh Chaturthi draws closer, workshops in Nagpur are working round the clock to bring Ganpati Bappa more home.
49:21But this year, devotees are paying more, with idle prices rising by nearly 30% as input costs soar.
49:29Not quite so happy news, I'm afraid.
49:31Yogesh Pandey reports.
49:37Every monsoon, Nagpur, Chatur, Auli becomes alive with the sound of chisels and the promise of Bappa's arrival.
49:45But the festive season, the biggest talking points now, the rising cost of devotion.
49:52Third-generation idol makers say prices have gone up by nearly 30%.
50:15Yet, workshops continue to innovate with fresh themes and customized Ganpati idols, drawing buyers.
50:35Despite the higher price tag, devotion remains untouched.
50:39Families have begun booking their Bappa.
51:08Higher costs may have reshaped the market.
51:11But not the faith.

51:41Students hopping across a narrow stop dam over the fast-flowing Betwa River, balancing over the rushing water to avoid
51:49an 8-kilometer detour to their class.
51:52I ask you this question.
51:53If we want to build a truly Viksit Bharat, we've got to start here.
51:57And start ensuring good quality education right down to the grassroots.
52:03Invest more in education.
52:05Perhaps we can really build a Viksit Bharat.
52:08Those images should not be seen at least a decade from now.
52:13Think about it.
52:14That was News Today.
52:17Thanks for watching.
52:18Bye for now.
52:20Chehin.
