00:14as Toki Carmichael who became a leading figure in the American civil rights movement and later
00:20dedicated his life to pan-African activism it's a very significant moment for us as you know
00:27Kwame Ture formerly known as Toki Carmichael was born in the city of Port of Spain was raised on
00:35Oxford Street before he migrated he was a significant figure in the pan-African movement
00:41globally there has been calls over the last several decades for just this exact activity
00:48to take place to honor the work and the legacy of Kwame Ture by changing the name of the street
00:54where he was born Oxford Street in the city of Port of Spain in his honor in the council in
01:01particular consular Clint Batiste who has been a member of council for the last 10 years has been
01:06advocating each and every year for the council to take the step he brought a motion to council
01:11last year July and the council accepted it and we made the announcement last year and this year we're
01:18taking the bold step the city council seized the occasion of emancipation to continue its mission
01:25to remove all vestiges of colonialism which other streets are under consideration for renaming at this
01:31time well I I wouldn't want to tell tales out of school a little too early but this is part
01:36of an
01:36effort by the council to dismantle colonial legacies as you would recall last year we made the announcement
01:43to remove the statue of Christopher Columbus and we were able to do that last year August we made the
01:49announcement about renaming Oxford Street last year we were able to do it today African Emancipation Day
01:54there are other activities that we are considering and as well we made the announcement this morning
02:00that the council has taken a decision to make a parcel of land available to the Emancipation Support
02:06Committee for the establishment of a cultural and heritage center as part of our efforts to ensure
02:12that the decolonization movement has a home in the city of Potsdam we have not yet identified the
