Heian Jingu was founded in 1895, so its history is relatively short. The shrine was built to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of Kyoto’s designation as the capital, and it enshrines the spirits of Emperor Kanmu (737–806) and Emperor Komei (1831–1867), the first and last emperors to rule from Kyoto as the capital. “Heian” is the former name of Kyoto.
